In hindsight, it seems almost incredible: 27 years ago, a young musician named Jeff Wayne (who at the time primarily wrote music for commercials) fell in love with H.G. Wells' much-loved book The War of the Worlds, and decided to make a musical version of it. Star Wars had just put people's minds into outer space, musical theatre was hugely successful, and long, anthemic orchestral prog-rock was all the rage. Wayne was inspired by all these elements and decided to gather together his peers and make a musical-mixed-with-spoken-word album, with the script taken directly from the famous book. This was by no means a soundtrack to a movie; in fact, all of the visuals were to come straight from the listener's minds (hard to imagine in today's video-oriented world.) The two-LP set featured Sir Richard Burton as frontman, along with some of the leaders of the progressive rock world who joined in on the fun. Moody Blues' Justin Hayward, "Rock On" vocalist David Essex and Thin Lizzy lead Philip Lynott each did more than sing on the record, they took a part in the musical play, performing key roles alongside the aforementioned dramatist Burton.

Amazingly, the eccentric project was a massive success, selling over 13 million copies and staying on the U.K. charts for over 260 weeks straight. DJs and bands--including the Orbital and Todd Terry--still use WOTW samples to inspire their own works. Unquestionably, the genesis of electronica can (in part) be mapped back to the War of the Worlds' use of sound experimentation and synthesized grooves.

The re-released double CD got a revamping both on an auditory and visual front: on the sonic side, the collection is now a remastered disc, mixed both in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. On the cosmetic side, the collection is now a six-panel digipack, with 48 pages of lyrics, biographies, and a handful of paintings from the original artwork. The music comes as a pair of Super Audio CDs (SACDs), a technology that will play both in standard and SACD players, the latter receiving up to four more times the sonic information for superior sound quality. --Denise Sheppard

My father used to listen to this a lot when I was a kid. I final found this and it is as great as I remember...

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds.......2007-01-04

I am trying to replace my 80's cassettes with dvd's. This s a very inexpensive way of doing this. You guys got a ton more titles that=n the local music store chains. Keep up the good work. My older brother purchased this musical on a 2 record album. It sounded great on a record player, but it sounds even better in this format. Thanx again

4 out of 5 stars One of a kind!.......2006-12-31

Jeff Wayne's "The War of the Worlds" is truly a unique undertaking (a two-hour rock album based on an H.G. Wells novel? who would think of such a thing?)--and a remarkably successful one. Steering almost entirely clear of special effects, Wayne uses recurring musical elements to tell his story--the ominous chords of the main theme; the driving bass rhythm which we first hear at the start of "The Heat Ray"; the eerie Martian whistle which makes a final, unexpected appearance in the Epilogue--with great effectiveness. Sure, this is a 1976 recording, and the wokka-wokka disco sound of the era makes occasional appearances--but overall, this recording has aged remarkably well. Wayne clearly has mastery of all musical genres. My only complaint would be that the second disc isn't quite as inspired as the first--too much atmosphere and not enough action for my taste. Nonetheless, a 5-star album.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff never fades away.......2006-12-21

I bought the 2 LP set of this back when it first came out, after hearing a snippet of it on the radio. Simply put, it stands on its own against ANYTHING written, or recorded since, in any popular/rock music arena. I just found out how popular it has become, which is very cool. I was right 25 years ago........ ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Did I say RECORD PLAYER?.......2006-08-06

I have the original LP records (remember those?) of this production. I loved it then but had tired of having to drag out an antique record player to enjoy Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds.

Enter CD's! This is a great experience for those of us who own the original. The ease of CD's makes this production enjoyable again! I also recommend it for everyone else who has never heard it before.

'We Will Rock You' is a unique collaboration between the legends of rock & one of the UK's most successful writers, Ben Elton. Since opening, it's been London's No.1 show, packing them in on a nightly basis. Recorded live at the Dominion Theatre, this album perfectly captures the electric atmosphere of this spectacular theatrical event. This is the story of the Bohemian Rebellion of 2302, the year of the Rhapsody. The year that the ancient promise We Will Rock You was fulfilled. All the Queen classics are here including 'Radio Ga Ga', 'Killer Queen', 'We Are The Champions', 'We Will Rock You' & of course, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. A grand celebration of Queen's music that's guaranteed to make you feel like you've got a front row seat. 4 out of 5 stars Solid tunage!.......2007-05-10

Good CD, good tracks. Not the Toronto Cast that I saw; and it was missing a couple of the songs from the musical, but it captured quite well the essence of the musical, and the singers have strong voices. All in all I'd give it a 4/4.

4 out of 5 stars Queen fans will be entertained by this Ga-Ga World Musical!.......2007-01-16

When I first listened to this soundtrack, I was blown away by the sheer variety and vocal talent of the performers. By the time the last track was finished, I felt the urge to see the show live. Imagine blending Queen and Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four into a musical. A very interesting concept, to say the least.

Queen fans will be entertained by the futuristic story of the Bohemians' struggle to reclaim the unfeeling, unthinking, cyber-controlled world of planet mall, formerly known as earth, against the massive mega-corporation, Globalsoft and its leader, the Killer Queen. The only things that matter in this world are marketing and commercialism, all musical instruments are banned, and all music is computer generated. No need for free thought, because the consequence of expressing it is a punishable offence.

Although the critics seem to be disappointed with the performance, any fan knows that many critics in the past never seemed to "get" Queen to begin with. And this product is for the fans of Queen, like the ones that fill the Dominion Theatre for this show regularly.

The music is great, the cast of singers are spot-on, and the story will make you think twice about "the establishment" and the internet-culture lifestyle. It may also make you stop to remember the ones that rocked and are no longer with us.

3 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT SHOW, BUT NOT A TOO WORTHY CAST RECORDING.......2006-08-15

`We will rock you' follows the suit Abba successfully made in the past with their musical `Mamma Mia': putting excellent household-known songs on stage in the form of a musical. There is no need to ramble too much over the meaning, impact and place the English rock band `Queen' and their lead singer Freddie Mercury have in the history of modern music: millions of sold records, an everlasting fan base and hit songs ranging from `Bohemian Rhapsody' to `Those were the days of our lives' are enough to mention.

Two out of three original surviving members of the band, Brian May and Roger Taylor teamed up with a well know English writer and comedian Ben Elton and Robert DeNiro himself as a producer to transfer `Queen's' hits to the stage in form of a story. The result is an entertaining and vivid 3-hour show called `We will rock you'. After its premiere in London's Dominion theatre, it has been filling the seats of this huge place (one might even consider it as a concert hall) night after night and the show was successfully transferred to Spain, Las Vegas, Russia, Germany and Japan.

Ben Elton wrote an interesting futuristic story. The action takes place 300 years in the future. The completely globalized world is run by a cyberspace company called `Globalsoft' presided by The Killer Queen. All the musical instruments and music composing, apart from the one created by the computer programs are banned. A group of young rebels oppose such state and led by a young Galileo Figaro and his girl Scaramouche try to find the instruments and introduce to the world the sound of rock and roll that has been long gone from everyone's mind. This may sound as a trashy plot, but it works surprisingly well on the stage. The actions of the main characters are told through numerous `Queen' hit songs: `Killer Queen', `I want to break free', `Who wants to live forever', `A kind of magic', `Another one bites the dust', `Radio Ga Ga' and `Bohemian Rhapsody' to name just a few. Apart from that, Ben Elton wrote the additional dialogue to further explain the story and for this he has come up with some of his most funny lines. The theatre audience kept bursting into giggling during the performance I attended, whether it's about the mentioning Brittney Spears, Victoria Beckham or Lord of the rings.

This cast recording featuring the original cast members was recorded live during one of the performances at Dominion Theatre. And even though it includes all the main musical numbers and somewhat evokes the great atmosphere of this show, it does not satisfy completely. The main problem stems from the fact its singers do not have the top vocal power this kind of music simply must have. Tony Vincent, who plays Galileo here, is not a bad vocalist, but here he is too thin, and almost unnoticeable, very much unlike the current Galileo in London, the Swedish-born Peter Johansson. Vincent also makes a habit of singing with a deliberate and rather annoying echo in his voice. Sharon D Clarke's Killer Queen is only a slight improvement, yet miles away from Mazz Murray's freezing vocals in the current cast. Hannah Jane Fox makes a very good Scaramuche, one must admit. One of the unwritten rules of the musical theatre has been that inappropriate (or shall we say for this occasion, a rather average) casting can hurt and ruin the best of materials (if you want the best of examples, try the 1994 LA recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's `Sunset Boulevard' with Glenn Close singing the lead). This recording alas confirms that fact.

But if one can put aside all that, what you do get on this CD is a very good instrumental rendition of `Queen's' greatest hits delivered by a disappointing cast. It would be interesting to hear this material with different people singing the roles. The CD comes with the production photos, cast and creative time listings, but with no lyrics or a synopsis. `Queen' aficionados will note some minor lyrical changes made to fit the plot.

The show is a miracle to see and hear live on stage and the experience will stay with you for a long time. In the end, however, it deserves a much better recording if it wishes to match it.

1 out of 5 stars Just dire.......2006-07-04

I struggle to understand who would actually want to buy this CD. It's far too "musical" to appeal to rock fans and far too "rock" to appeal to the traditional fans of musical theatre. Queen devotees would deplore what's being done to their favourite tracks and nobody who doesn't already like their music is going to be won over buy this over-hyped waffle. Surely this is targetted at those who saw the musical, who are the one group of people that would never want to be reminded of it. I'd say it was Ben Elton's lowest moment but it appears he's trying to sink even lower lately so it's too early to make that call. This sort of stuff is just fodder for those "wasn't that decade crap" TV shows. Watch for its appearance in the "What were they thinking in 2005" video podcast released some time next decade.

And is anyone else suspicious that the early reviews for this release not only give it five stars but also read like an advertisement for the stage production? Especially the ones written by people who have never written an amazon review before but feel the need to tell us about how sexy the actors look and even tell you about their past credits. Hmmm. Do I smell covert advertising?

3 out of 5 stars It's passable, but the good JUST outweighs the bad........2006-05-05

It really is a shame that the album released here is so uneven. Apparently, trying to stuff as many Queen songs into a musical as possible wasn't a very good idea.

"Radio Ga Ga" is a the songs that's been unfortunately altered for the worse, which is a shame; I like the SOUND of this version, the vocals in particular, but I just can't get past the idiotic new lyrics that were added to "update it." It would have been nice if "update" entailed more than referring to the Internet as much as possible, but I digress. "Killer Queen" is in the same boat; it sounds good (although I'm not a big fan of the Queen's vocals), but the lyrics just wreck it.

Actually, scratch that - I don't like the Queen's vocals in general. "Play The Game" almost works, but the rest of the tracks that the Killer Queen character is featured on? Avoid like the plague.

I don't quite get the point of including "Ogre Battle" and "Flash" here; they really add nothing to the album, beyond making the track list a bit longer.

Some of the songs fare well, though. I like "I Want To Break Free" and "Somebody to Love," and if it wasn't for the fact that I can't justify giving the album four stars, I'd tack on an extra one for "Seven Seas of Rhye." That one song is how I justify owning the album, though that's more reflective of the album's quality than that of the song.

This album might have the only version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" I've heard to date that I'm not a fan of. It's not bad, but the Queen's overly hammy vocals (again) ruin the end of the song and there's no explanation why there are three different characters singing the song.

This isn't Queen, but you shouldn't be expecting that if you buy this album. Eveb so, save for some of the lyrical atrocities that were commited to give the show a semblance of a plot, I feel that the cast does a capable job with the material.

That said...this won't be replacing the Queen CDs in my collection anytime soon. Not by a long shot.

While for many, the War of the Worlds remastered double CD and 48 page booklet set will provide enough prog rock fun, true aficionados will be filled with intergalactic glee when they see how many goodies accompany the collector's edition--a whopping seven CDs that start with the two remastered discs, then disc 3, which contains the best club/DJ remixes sampled from the original recording (including N-Trance's club-y version of the hit "Forever Autumn" and a take on "Brave New World" from famed house producer/DJ Todd Terry. Discs 4 through 6 deserve awards for unprecedented attention to fandom: three full CDs of outtakes, ranging from the original 1975 radio commercial, to acoustic demos of songs, to an additional 37 minutes of previously unheard Richard Burton narrative. Many of the best add-ons, however, exist on disc 7, a 92-minute DVD documentary featuring "The Making of" as well as a full album deconstruction, narrated by Jeff Wayne himself. The whole shebang is packaged in a hardcover 76-page book which features a written history, HG Wells' bio, and a plethora of full-color artwork. --Denise Sheppard

My husband has been looking for this ALBUM for a very long time. When I found it on line at Amazon I immediately ordered two copies. One for my husband and one for my son.. They couldn't have been happier and are still raving about the set.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Masterpiece.......2006-02-24

Jeff Wayne's musical version of the War of the Worlds is an all time classic.
If you don't own it, you're missing out on part of music history the likes of which will never be repeated!

5 out of 5 stars Good Music Lasts Forever.......2006-02-20

Get immersed into the world of HG Wells' novel War of the Worlds with Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds. Originally released in 1978, Jeff's music has had many fans and has grown to become a classic. Now a whole new generation will be exposed to this galactic experience. And they will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly the music will pull them into the story a create a whole new world from HG Wells words.

At times the music seems a little dated [at one point it is very reminiscent of Logan's Run or the disco scenes from Buck Roger's in the 25th Century], but that feeling quickly disappears as one becomes so engulfed in the music and what it is telling us above and beyond the words of the narration.

Fans of the both the book and films will find this to be a remarkable addition to the entire War of the Worlds experience.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time.......2006-02-19

The original concept album itself is a stunner, and this box set is a wonderful toy for the serious fan. The alternate version of songs and outtakes, in addition to the beautiful coffee table book, make a second (or third or fourth...) purchase worth it. The musicianship, the composition, and the performances are all first rate. I have loved this album for 25 years, and this new version only makes me love it more.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music in an eloquent package...a million stars!!!.......2006-01-23

Over 25 years ago, I received the 12" double vinyl LP version of "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds" as a gift from my brother (a Moody Blues fan), and I can say that this is one of my personal treasures. I was immediately blown away by the illustrated cover and the booklet that offered more illustrations and the biographies of all involved. Two of my all-time favorite entertainers were showcased, Welsh actor Richard Burton and Irish rock legend Phil Lynott. The music was staggering in its brilliance, and even then the music lept out of the speakers. Over the years, I reinvested several times (cassette, the "dub" cds, the previous 2cd reissue), and made this masterpiece my gift-of-choice to favorite friends and relatives until cd copies became too hard to find.

The deal with "collector's editions" is that you should get improved production and increased clarity that is noticeable to even the untrained ear; attention to detail in the packaging should then be second only to the digitally remastered sound quality on the CD's. Here, then, is a lavish, carefully assembled
set for those who basically worship the ground Jeff Wayne and his musical collaborators walk on. The 12" hardbound cover is a large size picture book, not some lump of paper wedged into a digipack, with beautiful reproductions of the original illustrations, new illustrations, and updated bios of the artists (some, including Burton and Lynott, have passed away).

If you are unfamiliar with this extremely well-conceived collection of music, you should first understand that this has to be in any serious rock library. As far as renditions (movie, musical, or written) of this H. G. Wells science fiction classic are concerned, I believe this one best conveys the very primitive yet real sense of impending doom for a self-assured species, largely due to Burton's masculine but worried narrative tone. The music is awesome, jaw-dropping, and mind-bending. The description of the spaceship's opening ("2 feet of shining screw projected, when ,suddenly, the lid fell off....a huge rounded bulk, larger than a bear, rose up slowly, glistening like wet leather...the clumsy body heaved and pulsated") set to scorching guitar riffs (before "an invisible ray of heat leapt from man to man") is my own personal highlight.

For those who know the music, this treatment of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds is like the "director's cut" of a great film you've already seen. Every fan feature imaginable is here, sounds much better than ever, and includes every alternate take, outtakes, snippets of foreign language adaptations, and even some recording room conversations. The DVD hosted by Jeff Wayne himself is the Holy Grail, and could not have been done better.

This is pure Heaven for those of us who know the music, and worth every penny. I've got to thank my little brother again for turning me on to this so many years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, good music.......2007-01-18

I saw the movie recently. The cast and acting is much stronger than the script. The music is critical to bringing the movie off. The opening is Van Morrison blaring from a convertible in Queens. Sets the whole tone. Despite this cut's solid place in the cannon, it is hard to find. Took me an hour to search all the Van Morrison play lists on Amazon. When I finally found it, it of course is out of print with a used copy going for thirty clams (another movie reference). So I come here for five bucks and five other great numbers and a bunch of good ones. See the flick, get yourself a toothpick and hit the road. Fun.

4 out of 5 stars Can't Stop It But They Did Shrink It.......2005-08-31

There is a lot of "baggage" associated with this album: the movie for which this was a soundtrack and the backlash against disco which preceded it's release. Unfortunately Casablanca Records got cold feet about releasing the album as it was originally intended: a two-disc set with longer versions of most of the songs using different mixes which featured strings and horns arranged by the Village People's usual arranger Horace Ott. The released album features single edits and reduces or in some cases altogether eliminates Ott's contributions to the tracks. To hear these songs as originally intended you would have to collect the Ritchie Family's "Give Me A Break" album and several 12" singles which were released as promotional items to club DJs only. Despite my disappointment this is still a highly enjoyable album, David London's "The Sound Of The City" (probably the only track to make it to the album in it's original version) is a standout, the lyrics and Gershwinesque arrangement paint a loving picture of New York that could have been created in Tin Pan Alley days. "Milkshake" is silly, campy fun and "Liberation" is a disco anthem to freedom and liberation in a time when a pop group couldn't get more specific as to who needed liberating (have we made much progress since then? I think we haven't). "Y.M.C.A." is simply an overdub of Ray Simpson's vocals over the single edit of the original recording but the title track is a great song and one of the best things the group recorded since Ray replaced Victor Willis. If you're a Village People fan you should get this cd and if you're a serious fan like me this will at least tide you over until you've collected all those rare DJ 12" singles.

4 out of 5 stars Ritchie Family, and camp, make this worthwhile........2004-01-21

There's something a bit depressing about this album. "Can't Stop the Music" was intended to be anthemic, but falls flat. I think the producers were attempting to change their sound to adapt to 1980 sensibilities, as evidenced by "rockish" "Liberation," but this too simply does not feel like the Village People that made its earlier hits. However, there are two reasons I recommend this though only to disco devotees. First, there are some good songs. My favorite is the Ritchie Family's "Give Me a Break," which I think is their best. The Village People's "Milkshake" is great in a campy way. Second, one will enjoy the soundtrack more if they have seen the film in all its horrendous glory. No review can do it justice: Xanadu pales in comparison to its hamhanded production and "plot." It's so bad it's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-10

I love this album. So Many happy memories attached to it of happy times!!
Got to disagree what the above reviewer says about The Ritchie Family. They are a wonderful camp disco extravaganza of a group with powerful and soulfull vocals. Anyone with a sense of camp and a love of fully orchestrated disco anthems will love their work with Jaques Morali and Henri Belolo. We have fallen a long way since as full orchestrations are rarley found these days and the time spent recording pop today is high speed for quanity not quality!
(JK is one of the few artists still doing the real thing these days.)
If you love Disco you gotta get this!

3 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2001-03-27

I bought this album just for David London's "The Sound of the City," but I had fun with all the other songs too. They're bouncy, light, frothy, and very shallow. It's a cult thing, I suppose, but a must have for any disco baby or duck!

3 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the Surprise Comedy Hit of the Year!.......2000-08-10

The end of disco - and the career of the Village People - was in sight when the movie was released and sank quicker than the Titanic. Still, despite - or because of? - its faults, the music is oddly catchy. Awful in the way that only really bad disco could be, but catchy, nonetheless. Looking back, the Village People were NEVER an "album" kind of group and what I mean is this: sure, there were perhaps 2 or 3 pretty good songs per album, with the rest being merely filler or downright LOUSY. They were really stronger with single releases...until this soundtrack came out, that is. You see, there's not a track to be found that isn't strictly 'camp'; not one can be taken quite seriously! (Like the movie. Which would have you believe the members of VP are STRAIGHT [David Hodo ain't singin' "I Love You To Death" to a GUY in the film!] - yeah, I know: it was a different time, blah blah blah, to which I say, "If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck" so why try to hide the obvious, hmm?) And, just like the movie, it's hard to pick a 'worst' moment, but since I'm a HUGE fan of anything REALLY bad (say, "Showgirls" or "The Postman" or anything featuring Brigitte Nielsen), the worst, in this case, is the best, and the hands down winner in THAT category MUST be "The Milkshake". This is simply SO bad, one can nearly hear the bottom of that proverbial barrel being scraped. I dare ANYONE to listen to this song without a moment of jaw-dropping disbelief. (To add to the inherent cheesiness, The Rithcie Family is brought in for a track. WHY this group was so popular in the 70's, I shall never know. They're charmless. Totally and utterly charmless, with singing that can charitably be called robotic. But just TRY to find a disco compilation withOUT them! GO figure...) My only real negative, which is why this received just 3 stars out of 5, is that to TRULY enjoy these songs, you have to watch the movie; it is only THEN you can 'appreciate' the 'artistry' behind the 'glory' that is "Can't Stop The Music".

4 out of 5 stars A great show, see it if you can!.......2005-08-30

I just got back from London, and I must say that the highlight of my trip was seing "We Will Rock You" I must say that the recording, which is great, but it is not quite as good as the cast that I saw preform. In the tribute song to Freddie I must admit, that I was almost brought to tears! So if you want to rock out to Queen's hits, this is the recording to get!
