Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

There aren't many trip hop albums I have bought over the years that has managed to sound fresh every time I throw in the cd into my stereo or listen to it on my iPod. Massive Attack's 1998 classic "Mezzanine" is one of those few trip hop albums that still sounds as fresh today as I first heard it almost ten years ago. The music is a sublime mix of hypnotic electronic beats, seductive male and female vocals, and a diverse mix of samples from bands like The Cure.

What I love about "Mezzanine" so much is that the music is dark and sinister. All the death/black metal bands in the world cannot create music as richly dense and heavy as "Mezzanine" is. There is a terrifying quality to the music that the entire album would be a perfect film score for a psychological thriller. The first two songs "Angel" and "Risingon" sounds like they would be perfect scores for my nightmares. I can never get tired of listening to "Teardrop" which features Elizabeth Fraser on vocals. The production is neither too slick or too gritty. "Mezzanine" is one of the few albums I can actually call flawless. Every song is a Massive Attack classic.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not Trip-Hop, But it is...........2007-05-04

This was the first Massive Attack album i bought. it doesn't sound like it's been almost ten years since this came out, it just has this timeless feel to it. Massive Attack has, ironically, done everything they have set out to do on this album, and that is be exactly who they are by trying to escape who they have become. i know that that may sound kind of strange, but it makes sense. The label "trip-hop" is something they have always loathed, despite the fact that they were pioneers of it, and i find it ironic that this album is one of the (if not THE)preeminent examples of this style.

"Mezzanine" is like the "Sgt. Pepper's" of trip-hop, and of Massive Attack's career. i don't care how many more albums they release, this will always be the best one. however, i do disagree with some reviews that label this album as heavy metal. Massive's music always seems to come close to style, but shies away. there are shades of everything reggae, hip-hop, metal, ambient, but i can't say that there is enough to pinpoint it down in general. again this is something that i find unique to trip-hop, never quite getting at what it wants to be stylistically but coming very close.

continuing my comparison to "Sgt. Pepper's" the first obvious parallel is the structure of the album. the songs fit so perfectly together, that while some may not be great songs, it is how they fit in relation to the others that makes them work. the track "exchange" while seeming stupid to other reviewers i find to be a wonderful midpoint break between the four track barrage to open the record and the second half. unfortunately though, in similarity to the Beatles and all great bands, landmark albums lead to destruction. The Beatles were never the same after Sgt. Peppers breaking up barely three years later. Massive, while still barely clinging to 3D and Daddy G, have lost a bit of edge. The creative juices only flow so far and i think the gas has ran out a bit. but what an incredible record!!!

Massive Attack's Mezzanine ranks right up there with David Bowie's Low and the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat for most original album in the history of pop music. It is an album of craft; each beat, each note, and each lyric are carefully put into place for perfection. This album is not for everybody however; the dense, pristine production of Mezzanine conjures up a heavy air of claustrophobia. If slow and creepy is your cup of tea, then take a gulp, because this is as good as it gets. Mezzanine is a concept album. Since it is hard to figure out what the concept is, I will give it away. It is about autism. Mezzanine is not a happy record, but it is not depressing either. The tone that I get is one of fuzzy, distorted confusion, with the singers detailing the struggles of making sense of the world around them (the way autistic savants do) with impeccable songwriting. Lyrics such as "toy-like people/make me boy-like" will remain fresh and experimental for a very long time. Mezzanine is more hypnotic than entertaining, that is for sure. But in that, it succeeds impossibly well. Mezzanine, along with Blur's The Great Escape, is the best album of the 90's. Genius. A+

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Rarely in the darkwave genre do I find anybody that I consider to be interresting, however this time around, I'm satisfied. Collide is a collition of trip hop and goth that sounds like a terrible idea, but actually works out quite well. Collide will trip you out big time!

I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).

This album is so darkly ethereal and richly textured that I yearn for the poet's ability to paint a vivid word picture of its seductive sound. Sadly, I am not the world reknown poet any review of this album demands, but simply your average music lover, and after musing over it so long my brain cramps, the best I can come up with is something like. "Hey, what do you get when you cross a goth chick with a computer geek?" So you will just have to use your imagination.

Imagine the perfect song for a lovesick vampire. Imagine what moonlight peeking through gathering stormclouds sounds like. Imagine a Hammer horror movie with a Moby soundtrack. Imagine the distant music that haunts the dreams of some half-mad hero from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Imagine the perfect CD for your date with that fair-skinned lovely with the black lipstick and fingernail polish.
Imagine closing your eyes and feeling the sound sweep over you, setting you hair on end and your soul on fire.

Then stop imagining it and order this CD. Wait for a dark and stormy night and slip it in. Set your imagination free on midnite wings...

I highly recommend this Cd to anyone who loves to be swept away in imagination. I find all of Collide's music highly moving and inspiring, and Chasing the Ghost is one that truly grabs you and carries you away. I can't say enough about this cd really.. but it's definitely one of my all-time favorite cds. Dark and alluring.... perfection!

This album is definitely a haunting series of songs!! The bands ability to add that certain haunting nature to Karin's voice is, in my experience, rare!! Defintely a must have for your hard core gothic/industrial/electronica collection!!!

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.

many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.

There is nothing much left to say about Massive Attack's masterpiece of "trip-hop" that is Blue Lines.

Tricky's raps are classy and smart and the warm synth work is both inspiring and brilliant. The deep dub-like bass grooves on this album are legendary. "Unfinished Symphony" is a soulful pop masterpiece. This album is displayed prominently on my CD rack.

Ok, I will stop the praise..only if you buy this album now.

if there is ever an overlooked album this is definitely one of them. from the moment "Safe from Harm" starts we are encapsulated by this unique Bristol sound. what makes this Bristol sound so unique is the using of vintage sounds and putting them into such new settings. this album is definitely un-categorizable. we have soul/R&B, dub, hip-hop and even the hint of the Portishead like vintage soundtrack sound. this album is most certainly seed planting and both sides of the Atlantic have undoubtedly taken this to full advantage. never has an album had a "i know i've heard this somewhere" kind of attitude.

An Italian, and a couple of Afro-Caribeans, living in Bristol, where a whole new scene is emerging, with the likes of Tricky, Portishead and Roni Size producing new beats. You produce your first album and name your band Massive Attack, only for George Bush senior to invade Kuwait. Hence the band became known (for a short while) as Massive (and I did have a copy simply named Massive till it was stolen - if you have one you have a rarity).

Like their other albums they use a female guest vocalist - this time soul singer Shola Ahma,who later went solo (maybe they'd have kept her?) What you have is slickly produced music that captures the early 90's. Their later albums are more sophisticated, btu this is where it all began.

I bought this CD to play at work for background music and it's great for that. The only thing missing is the usually obligatory 20th Century Fox theme before the main Star Wars theme. Other than that, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus do a very fine job with Maestro Williams' music, indeed.

For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's "Breezin'," a lite-funk relic from 1976, or "Emily" from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. It reaches back to 1983 to remind us of an ahead-of-its-time display of Celtic mysticism from Clannad ("Theme from Harry's Game"), and it both opens and closes with superb selections from one of the genre's most admired artists, Loreena McKennitt--very appropriate since, one could argue, discussions on the future of New Age should both begin and end with McKennitt's name. Despite its few warts, Pure Moods II is a good listen overall. --Terry Wood

I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.

"Pure Moods was such an unexpected success that it launched a number of spinoffs and, eventually (and perhaps somewhat inevitably), Pure Moods II. What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.

Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.

"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.

Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.

Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.

The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.

This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.

If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.

I bought this based on the cover, I was at a flea market and loved the purple and intersting artwork. Now I have lost the cover but know where the cd is at all times, only 4 songs are songs I could live without (11-14) the rest are wonderful, amazing and truly a joy to listen to. I will be checking out the samples of the other pure moods, to see which one I will make my own, next. A great way to relax after a stress filled day, or start the day listening on the drive to work.

This is a very underrated album. Night at the Opera has some of their best produced moments, but this album has some of the most energetic, heavy, guitar-oriented rock ever created! From the very start, it sizzles with a real energy, shredding guitars, intense drums, this is rock and roll, baby! Brighton Rock and Stone Cold Crazy are early 70s speed metal, showing intensity and instrumental ability, and at the same time have accessible melodies, and dead-on harmonies that will make your hair stand up on end. The echoing guitar solo in Brighton Rock alone is worth getting this CD for. The beatlesque Killer Queen and In The Lap Of the Gods II are glam-ish with out becoming self-parodies, with unforgettable melodies. Throughout the album, but particularly on "Killer Queen", "Lap of the Gods I", and "Flick of the Wrist", the harmonies are brilliantly chosen and immaculately recorded. Freddy Mercury is at the top of his form here, his voice effortlessly nails every song, it's easy to see why he was considered one of the best rock lead singers of all time. Tenement Funster is a rather convincing offering from drummer Roger Taylor, who needless to say provides knock-out drumming throughout the album. Things falter a bit with Misfire, where John Deacon takes on role of guitarist, it is technically brilliant but misses the heaviness of Brian May's playing. 'She Makes Me' is a bit of a weaker moment as well, not a bad song, but just not as intense as the rest of the album. Leroy Brown is stylishly done but not the catchiest song, showing styles they would cover more effectively on their next album. All in all, this is one of the best albums that came out in the 1970s.

Sheer Heart Attack (1974.), Queen's third studio album

In the early 1970's, there were plenty of hard rock bands trying to make it big in the music world. Many of these bands were influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, who were both carving out a new direction in music. One such new band in the early 1970's was the London-based British band, Queen. Queen's first two albums showed immense potential. Both albums (`Queen I' and `Queen II') showed the band could rock, however that was only half of the story. Queen's second album in particular showed a much more progressive side of the band but also began to unveil the signature `operatic' style that Queen became famous in incorporating into their music. Following a well received reception from rock fans of `Queen II' as well as extended radio play and popularity from the song `Seven Seas of Rhye', the band were indeed gaining popularity and momentum. The next challenge which faced the band would be to build on their great start and produce something even more potent with their next album effort.

`Sheer Heart Attack' was an album that was plagued with a number of problems during its creation. The chief problem was that Queen were in fact a three piece for much of the recording process as guitarist Brian May fell ill during that time. Eventually he had to record his parts onto the music recorded by Mercury, Taylor and Deacon. However `Sheer Heart Attack' proved, just like the Who's `Who's Next' and Led Zeppelin's `Led Zeppelin II' before it, that a disrupted recording process need not prevent a classic album from being produced. `Sheer Heart Attack' is, for me Queen's finest album effort of their career. Many may disagree, often citing the groundbreaking `A Night At The Opera' as the band's greatest work. Indeed, I will not stand in the way of this opinion, as `A Night At The Opera' is in many ways Queen's creative pinnacle. However, there is something which always caught my eye with `Sheer Heart Attack'. There is an edge to the songwriting on this album which makes much of the work extremely memorable. It is also a display of Queen hard rocking in full swing, with their operatic and quirky take thrown in. Some songs are shorter pieces and others are much more fully developed works but the course of the album weaves a very colourful tapestry of sounds which never has a dull moment. The album marks the continuation of the band working as an effective songwriting unit, with all band members contributing at least one song (John Deacon's first songwriting effort is featured on this album). The album also spawned a couple of classic Queen hits in `Killer Queen' and `Now I'm Here' as well as the brilliant `In The Lap Of The Gods' and `In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited' which acted as concert finales for the band for much of the rest of the band's live career. In many respects this album is a melting pot of some sorts for the band as it marks the junction between the band's hard rocking beginnings, with the big Led Zeppelin-esque influences, with their much more grandiose operatic sounds and textures which were seen even more increasingly on subsequent albums. The result of this transitional period...a fascinating work which for me Queen would never quite again top.

`Brighton Rock' opens the album in an express fashion. This is an excellent hard rocker to open the album and is more than anything a great showcase for Brian May who fires out some excellent guitar work in the instrumental part of the song. `Killer Queen' is next; there is little that needs still be said about this one. It is a fantastic single and one of Queen's best - a career hallmark. Following this the album tempo changes for `Tenement Funster'. This is an excellent song written by Roger Taylor and is one of the best tracks on the album. Roger Taylor's songs, often of youth, rebellion and freedom are regularly the overlooked dimension to Queen's catalogue and this acoustic driven song is no exception. The song runs into `Flick Of The Wrist', which is an excellent hard rocker with a classic Queen chorus. One of the shorter songs on the album, `Lily Of The Valley', is led by a strong Mercury vocal coupled with weeping guitar work. Another excellent album single is next in `Now I'm Here', centered around a fantastic May guitar line; this builds into a masterfully crafted song. The first part of the fan favourite `In The Lap Of The Gods' is next. The song has all of the drama we expect from Queen in the opening before settling into a slow but unwavering groove.

My personal favourite track is next in `Stone Cold Crazy'. This, my friends, is thrash metal before its time. For a song from 1974, `Stone Cold Crazy' is unusually heavy and fast and proved to be a highly influential song. Indeed it was later covered by thrash metal pioneers Metallica on their `Garage Days...Revisited' release in 1987. `Stone Cold Crazy' cannons out of the speakers throughout its short 2 minute run time and is coupled with an atmospheric Mercury vocal and pacy drumming. `Dear Friends' again shifts the tempo with a slow lyrical yearn from Mercury. `Misfire' is an upbeat, enjoyable jingle - it is also John Deacon's first album composition. `Bring Back That Leroy Brown' is an amusing song - a typical humourous jaunt for Queen with some quirky mandolin work and operatic vocals. You could easily mistake this song for something from a musical. `She Makes Me' is a classic, slow ballad with more excellent Mercury vocals and has a refreshing retro feel to the music. `In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited' is the perfect finisher for the album. It has a waltz-like 3/4 meter which paves the way for an entrancing exit chorus that never tires over its many repetitions.

`Sheer Heart Attack' is one impressive album and demonstrates a legendary band on top of their game. Queen have put out their fair share of albums, all of which have their own unique stamp. `A Night At The Opera' and a `A Day At The Races' amongst others are deserved classics but for me this underrated masterpiece has the edge on both of them. I hope after reading this review that I can convince many of you to give this album a go. It is sadly often overlooked but I can guarantee that you will definitely not regret listening to this excellent work...its not to be missed!!

If your only familiar with the most popular Queen songs get some more of their recordings and experience their great talent. All their early recordings all say "No Synthesizers". It's amazing what they can do with vocals and Brian May on guitar.

I first heard this on a used LP years ago but I'll spare you the history lesson. This is a fantastic collection of tunes where heavy metal and cabaret collide with Beatle-type song structures and - somehow - it all holds together perfectly. The musicianship is amazing and, perhaps because none of the songs here were played to death on the radio, virtually all of this CD sounds as fresh as it did years ago. Even if you're sick of the few Queen songs that are still in heavy radio rotation, you will find much to cheer about here. The production is sleek, the riffs are furious, and the harmonies are stellar.

Highlights? "Brighton Rock" is an incredible guitar workout (including multiple overdubbed guitar harmonies) but has enough signature and tempo changes to have done most prog bands proud. "Stone Cold Crazy" is speed metal years before anyone could imagine such a thing, with heavy fleet fingered riffs that owe nothing to blues rock. And then there's the pop perfection of "Killer Queen," the alienated balladry of "Tenement Funster" and the operatic strangeness of "In the Lap of the Gods."

There's never been anything quite like the symphonic film music series that John Williams has forged for George Lucas's sprawling Star Wars saga. By the time the sixth chapter rolls around, Williams will have created a body of work that spans fully 30 years of his career, a virtual Ring Cycle of sci-fi/fantasy soundtrack music. While Attack of the Clones again achieves the high standards of its predecessors, it also succeeds by both forging some rewarding new musical themes at the same time it begins to bring the galactic fable full circle. The budding relationship between now-teenaged Anakin Skywalker and Amidala/Padme is informed by "Across the Stars--Love Theme from Attack of the Clones," a grand romantic motif that's infused with a subtle melancholy that hints at the tragedy that must ultimately befall the young lovers. The composer's mastery of idiom and color serve him especially well in the action cues, infusing "Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant" and "Jango's Escape" with bracing doses of 20th-century modernism and its inherent rhythmic fury performed, as always, by the London Symphony Orchestra. Williams also incorporates the "Force" and "Jedi" themes of the first SW trilogy sparingly, before "Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale" completes the musical/thematic tapestry by interweaving The Empire Strikes Back's menacing "Imperial March" with both the new "Love Theme" and the Phantom Menace's dramatic choral showcase "Duel of the Fates." This sweeping denouement should rightfully take its place among the saga's most compelling musical sequences. Purists may grouse at the obviously abridged music here, but given history a complete/ultimate edition of the score can't be far behind. Although this one ranks last, as in my opinion, among Star Wars scores it is still above and beyond the average movie score. Plus it has my absolute favorite piece of Star Wars music wirtten for any of the six films: "Across the Stars". It is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I still remember sitting in the theater for the first time and just being astonished by that piece. The only reason I rank this one last is because "Across the Stars" is pretty much the only original peice that really stands out. All the other noteworthy original compositions in it depend to heavily on "Across the Stars". Not that that's really that bad of a thing but I would have liked to have heard some more original music that stands out.

This soundtrack is a great mix of classical music of the Star Wars variety. The love theme, while a bit dour, is a beautiful score and very slow and methodical compared to the other good tracks on the album. Main Title and Ambush on Coruscant is also another more moderated track on the album. The strongest track is Love Pledge and the Arena which starts off with the melancholy love theme again, but then switches over to a determined, paced, action sequence sound, like what you hear during an invasion. It's very powerful. Two other powerful tracks that are much faster are Jango's Escape and Bounty Hunter's Pursuit. Jango's Escape is probably the best track on the album. Full of energy, it just runs with you. Next time you watch the film pay attention to when this track is played. Bounty Hunter's Pursuit starts off with a bright uptempo and finishes, after a quiet period, with a take on Droid Invastion from The Phantom Menace. The last noteworthy song is Return to Tatooine, which mixes different tempos and pulls the various moods of the film together nicely. If you loved The Phantom Menace soundtrack, you'll enjoy this one a great deal also.

Glad I bought this version. Unlike some of the others, it is an integrated suite of pieces. It plays just fine on my Windows PC. At times the music is strong and forceful, at times energetic like Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and at other times soft and ethereal. If you like lyrical music, you'll enjoy the touching love song theme (Across the Stars), which John Williams weaves into the score numerous times.

This is probably my second favorite of the prequels, mainly because of the Love Theme. It's so emotional, and sort of unlike Star Wars, which is why I love it so much. However, you also get your fill of action (listen to the "Chase Through Coruscant" and "Love Pledge and the Arena;" you'll know what I mean!) The End Credits probably is my favorite song on the disk, because it starts to incorporate Darth Vader's theme (listen very carefully at the very, very end... the cello makes you shiver!) with the Love Theme. A good foreshadowing of events, in my humble opinion. I'd highly recommend this.

This CD is great! It's everything you'd want it to be in a Star Wars CD. As an avid fan of Star Wars listening to the tracks gives me great mental pictures. Many of the songs have good rising and falling crescendos. My personal favorite is the Love Theme. I just can't get enough of it! It almost makes me want to cry or something. There is only one downfall. Knowing John Williams (the writer and conductor) he writes almost every piece of music for a scene and not really as a song. Sometimes the songs take strange dips and sounds but then this isn't a classical Bach or Beethoven score. Definitely check it out if you love Star Wars
