British electronics wunderkind Richard James (alias Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window, etc.) claims he heard the compositions on Selected Ambient Works, Volume II in lucid dreams. Like abstract paintings composed of shades of a single color, James's resonant explorations of specific timbres linger close to a central idea on each cut, incorporating just enough variation to remain disturbing. While its predecessor, Selected Ambient Works '85-'92 drew on seven years' worth of material, the uniform quality of these untitled tracks, plus their judicious sequencing, suggests they were assembled over a shorter period. Clocking in at over 150 minutes, the double-disc set (if this is "selected," how many hours of outtakes remain?) provides an exemplary introduction to the quieter facets of James's expansive, idiosyncratic aesthetic. --Kurt B. Reighley

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-02-15

This quiet, deeply introspective album is full of stunning sounds and textures, alternately beautiful and creepy. That music produced electronically can be this rich with emotion is an incredible achievement. I have listened to this album hundreds of times and it never fails to soothe my soul. It would be at the top of my list of desert island discs.

I'm puzzled by those who label it experimental. It's different from other electronica, granted, but many artists were making this type of music long before this album came along. I can't consider this a challenging record since it is so easy to listen to. You just put it on and float in it.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite ambient CD.......2006-12-31

I've heard the name "Aphex Twin" for quite sometime now and was finally introduced to the ambient side of this artist through the internet animation "Salad Fingers." -- I decided to check out this album as I've been wanting to get into ambient music a bit more and I was completely surprised on what I was hearing through my headphones. Every track is something different. Another blank canvas that, by the end of the song, has a landscape painted so vivdly you could reach out and touch it. I definately recommend this album for anyone who is a fan of ambient music or would like to see what this genre is all about because this album is classic.

If you're still antsy about purchasing this album, here are some stand out tracks:
disc one: Cliffs, Rhubarb, Radiator
Disc two: Blue Calx, 2 Twig, Hexagon, Lichen

5 out of 5 stars Unique and mesmerising.......2006-12-17

Aphex Twin's second compilation of ambient works is, in my opinion, vastly superior to the first release. Straying away from the more rhythmic focus of 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92', volume 2 is an aurally sparse and contemplative journey. The story of Richard D. James' inspiration (a series of vivid dreams, according to him) may be a myth, but all the same, this ambient masterpiece seems to tear you from your surroundings and throw you into a dream-like soundscape. It is a rare sort of album that, I have found, demands the listener's attention, and rewards it by taking complete control of their senses.

'Selected Ambient Works Volume 2' is an unsettling album, combining synthesisers and samplers to form dark, barren soundscapes. Needless to say, it bears no semblance to the structure of popular music, and is characterised by long, repetitive tracks that unfold over a long period of time. They really have to be listened to in their entirety to be truly appreciated. That being said, the tracks, clocking in at 6-7 minutes each across 2 CDs) never try your patience. On the contrary, the masterful compositions reward patience, with their subtle changes and textural variations. In fact, for most of the album, I found myself wishing that the songs would not end. 'Radiator', 'Steel Plate' and 'Tassels', to name a few, stole my imagination and never let go and, for me, the fading out of the tracks signified an all-too-soon departure from an altered reality.

These may sound like exaggerations, but 'Selected Ambient Works Volume 2' has a rare and profound effect upon me, and is one of the few albums I own that bears no likeness to anything else. To label it 'electronica' is too broad, and utterly meaningless. 'Ambient', however, doesn't seem to do justice to its effect. The only way I can describe it is as an experience, for it seems to transcend the effect that music I like would ordinarily have on me. A drug, perhaps?

Of course, like every album I absolutely adore, it is just shy of perfection. There are some tracks that seem out of place with the general aesthetic of the album, and even jarring. The album therefore lacks the feeling of continuity that one may find with, say, Tim Hecker. However, I do not believe that this was Richard D. James' intention, and I could not imagine the album without the seemingly out-of-place tracks. Furthermore, it is astounding to think that this album is simply full of compositions that take control of the listener's imagination, and transport them to a vividly surreal and barren place. This is a must buy album for anyone who likes electronic music, and is willing to invest a bit of time into it.

5 out of 5 stars Unparalleled atmospheric ambient........2006-04-10

More mature, organic and complex than '85-'92 and less abstract than some later Aphex. The repetition and strangeness of the tracks require dedication from the listener, but the reward is atmospheres rarely experienced in ambient music or otherwise. I've heard that sleep deprivation and isoloation were ingredients in early Aphex Twin, both seem to come through in this excellent release. If only electronic artists would start releasing back catalogue in 24/96 dvd-a (or similar). This release certainly deserves it. If you like electronic ambient music, you probably already have this in your collection... if not, you should.

3 out of 5 stars Aphex Twin Fans will be delighted..........2006-03-01

I thought volume 1 of Aphex Twin's selected ambient works was a superb album, so I bought Volume II, thinking I would find more great stuff. I found the Volume 2 CD is "far out" compared to Volume 1, in that it is more like one long series of weird sound effects. How do you put that into words? This stuff is more akin to Tangerine Dream than their first album, which is more "dancy" and more epitomises the sound of ambient house sound of the 90s.

Huge dance floor slammers built the label's reputation and the parties solidified the rest. Now it's time for the US to join the fun. This is the first Ed Banger CD comp and it features all new, unreleased tracks, spotlighting Justice, Sebastian, Uffie, DJ Mehdi, and more. 5 out of 5 stars A must have for Cafe del Mar fans.......2003-03-23

Dreams volume 2 is a truly wonderful album, compiled by a true DJ of the del Mar sound. Even better than vol. 1, this compilation combines the perfect blend of tasteful ambience, jazz, and vocals to totally numb the listener. The albums starts with the full-of-motion ambient piano track "Forty Two", then jumps into more upbeat jazzy vocal sounds, finally slowing down to end with Ypey's "Mellow", an absolutely beautiful ambient tune with a quiet backdrop of rolling waves. My favorite song on the compilation is definitely "Mellow", a song so beautifully composed, you can close your eyes and actually feel yourself on the beach of the Cafe del Mar.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome vocal trance collection.......2006-02-11

This addition to the Ultra Trance series focuses more on the vocal trance area with female singers. The songs were great, especially "God Is A Girl" by Groove Coverage. If you have never heard that song, buy this CD. That song was actually why I bought the 2 Disc set. The 2nd disc, the DVD, had pretty cool videos. My favorites were the "Diving", "Loneliness", and "God is a Girl" videos. Overall, I think that this is one of the strongest of the Ultra Trance releases.

3 out of 5 stars Where is Disc 2?.......2005-12-01

Okay, I'm not really a kid, but I didn't feel like typing in my e-mail address and everything. Anyways, this is a good CD, but I'm not sure about the 2nd Disc because when I opened the CD case there was only Disc 1. There wasn't even a spot for 2 Discs... Does anyone know if you are supposed to send something to get it or what? If it's supposed to be together how is the case set up? When you open the case can you see both CD's or do you have to flip it open and the 2nd Disc is behind the 1st Disc? I'm just a little disappointed it that, but besides that this CD has a few really good songs.

I think I'm just going to have to e-mail the company or something about that, but if anyone can answer any of my questions please post it here. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Trance Album!.......2005-05-28

In keeping with the quality of all the CDs in this series, Ultra Trance 2 brings great trance beats and is a wonderful buy for all fans. The CD sure gives you more bang for your buck- each of the sixteen songs is fairly long. I reccommend this for any fans of trance or techno.

    5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best CD i have.......2004-10-24

    yeah the songs were great
the choice of vocalists was outstanding
the best songs on the CD are:
Never - The Roc Project (the version on the DVD isnt as good)
God is a Girl - Groove Coverage
Beachball - Nalin and Kane (i think Johnny Vicious misplaced this song on the CD, it has a good beat and is more quiet i think it should have been the last song on the CD)
Into the Sun - Weekend Players
I'm in Heaven - Jason Nevins

the nice thing about this CD is that there are really no terrible songs so you just keep the CD playing at a party and you will never feel the urge to go and switch to the next track

    for the DVD
i LOVED the Diving and God is a Girl music videos and the rest were good too, only one i didnt like was Yet Another Day it was not light enough to be considered vocal trance which is what im after

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD!.......2004-01-11

I bought this, and I was kinda disappointed with the CD, but the DVD made up for it. If they did this again with their upcoming Ultra Trance CDs, I'd buy them. KEEP THE DVDs COMING!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bring back the drums!.......2006-12-27

It's nice to hear a good "drum" mix since the trend in eletronica has been toward the more tech/minimal house these days. Disc 1 (Chus & Ceballos) starts off with a good intro to the set with a track titled Dibiza. The mix continues followed by an impressive track #4 (Flash). More drums here and there, here and there...then a surprising vocal thrown in for good measure titled "My World". Worth noting is the great build-ups throughout the CD. This further establishes this mix at the top of my rotation. I can never get enough of some great techy, dramatic build-ups (see "Keep It Going" for an illustration) Great track selection on disc #1.
The Sharam Jey disc is what I was truly after. Sharam Jey has been making a strong name for himself by producing and mixing some of the most played club tracks recently. He is known for low laying bass with some nasty beats. Some of this set however, is shadowed by some minimal type beats with a slower beat per minute. Standout tracks include "Living It Up," "Do For Love," and "Neo Dancer."

Surprisingly for me, the Chus & Ceballos disc turns out to be the better of the two. However, I would highly recommend the purchase both both well rounded discs.

Not awesome, but still pretty good. My favorites on here are Nightmare and Airwave. The other songs I liked were Sunchyme, Better off Alone, Toca's Miracle, I'm not in love, and Komodo. The rest I could not really get into. And also, I still don't understand, why does everyone like Castles in the Sky so much? There are better songs out there!

2 out of 5 stars There's soo much better than this out there.......2004-02-23

I have to compare this one to others out there, and vol.2 is flat. It's not terrible, but a yawner.

I just bought vol. 4, it's it's head and shoulders better than this one. Skip this and buy that! :)

5 out of 5 stars Very good Cd.......2003-10-18

Ok, this Cd had my favorite trance song in all of history, which is Kiss(when the sun don't shine) by the Venga boys. This song is Very unplifting and 9 minutes long too. There were also a lot of other good songs too, like Let u Go. I highly recommend this Cd if you like uplifting trance, with some hard trance too.

    4 out of 5 stars Not bad........2003-10-16

First I really didn't like this CD, but after listening to it twice, I changed my mind. It's good. Not super, not OK, just good. If you want to buy a trance CD, and you already own all the best ones, this is the one for you to buy, but otherwise there are better CDs out there.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Album, A Judge For Any Other.......2006-03-15

This album is one that will reshape all your views, attitudes and opinions about trance. I've had this album for over 4 years now and there is no other trance compilation that matches up to it. The attractive list of memorable trance anthems and uplifting euphoric vibes and vocals (F.E. Beyond Time, Iguana, Castles in the Sky, & Silence) will break you away from the majority of the dominant, repetative, club and break beats found on many other CDs. This CD is a jewel for any collection and is a MUST HAVE. Trance Mix USA Volume 2 is nothing like the other volumes, a diamond in the rough. If you enjoy Vocal Trance and emotionally motivating beats, this CD is for you....

5 out of 5 stars A great mix of popular songs.......2004-03-04

I recently bought this in 2004 after it has been released for so long, since I am a fan of the Blank and Jones. I must admit their mixes are much better than others that I have listened to. I am not disappointed! As other reviewers mentioned, song numbers 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 19, 21 are a kick! Check out TranceMix USA 4. Lastly, Blank and Jones's new release "Blank and Jones The mix Volume 2" is also worth checking out! Somehow the US release album has only one CD... :(

5 out of 5 stars Trance Fans Rejoice! This Album is premium!.......2004-01-07

This CD rocks. Every trance fan should have it. Anybody that knows anything about techno, let alone trance genre, should snap to attention when Blank and Jones is mentioned. Their polished, deep, immaculate sound thunders with the beginning track "Beyond Time", and it never ends from there. It is the best cd i have purchased since my first (and probably best) album: Dj Micro Tech mix 2000. (i have to heavily promote that album, if you like this one you'll like that cd, too). The cd booms and has beats thrown in everywhere to keep you planted and smiling the entire time, enjoying every last note. Mostly everyone will be wowed by the awesome performance this CD has to offer. from the hit club favorite "castles in the sky" to the very classy decelereaton towards the end, , this cd is a true masterpiece.

    4 out of 5 stars wicked cd.......2003-12-21

this cd has great songs, is the type of cd that i would love to put in my car, with full volumen before going to a massive exciting party, the first song is one of those songs that drug your senses without doing any harm to your body.

4 out of 5 stars Great Trance Mix!.......2003-09-29

Before i discovered this CD I did not know who Blank&Jones were, but I have to admit they really have talent for mixing up on the mixing board. I first saw this CD at Virgin Records a month after it came out (2001), I listened to each song a little bit and liked it a lot. But I don't know why but I hesitated to buy it and I put it back on the shelve. It wasn't until last year that I saw it again and decided to buy it, and believe me it was a smart choice, I listened to the rest of the CD and it became one of my top favorite CDs that I own. Believe it or not, I unfortunately lost the CD, and was really pissed of, but this time i didnt even bother to hesitate like the first time, i just walked into the record store and bought me another copy which I still have today.
If you want to listen to something that will help you relax on those Saturday afternoons before going clubbing than this is your CD. There are also tracks that will get you ready for the dance floor and pump you up for the whole night.

I have purchased a lot of the yogafit cd's and this slow flow series is the best! The beats are smooth and very tribal all at the same time. I use them in almost every class and play them a lot at home for my own personal practice.
