Unrestrained growth--it's the story of the late 20th century. But Sonig, a label founded by Mouse on Mars members Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma, is much lovelier to behold than that clapboard condo that's blotting out the sun that used to shine through your window. The duo originally conceived of Sonig as an alternative to Mouse on Mars' big-business environment. They put out side projects and records by their friends on vinyl, which guaranteed a certain marginality but also conferred a degree of commercial freedom. But there's no denying demand, especially when the product is as alluring as the mostly electronic sound art collected on this CD. Yes, CD. Sonig have stepped out into the big, bad world, if only to conquer it. They serve up a bit of their past--F.X. Randomiz contributes "Metix V. 1.0b7," a percolating pot full of masticated beats and merry melodies, and "Syc.," a fantasia of fractured beats by Mouse on Mars. There are also one-off forays into collage country by C-Schulz & Hajsch as well as aggressive blip rearrangement by Scratch Pet Land. The album itself is a bit of a collage, an collection of unlike objects deployed so compellingly that hidden connections become apparent with each new spin. --Bill Meyer
