2 out of 5 stars Almost, but Not Quite.......2007-03-09

Since American Idol began, we've gotten to a point where it once again sounds original to do lo-fi, stripped-down recordings. So the Husbands sound more original than they probably even wanted to. The whole album was recorded in someone's apartment, probably in one take, using what sounds like scraps of a drum kit. For a band that's ripping off '60s garage rock and girl groups, that's actually a flattering way to go: the lack of polish sounds more true to the source and imparts more energy to the songs.

The problem is, there are 17 songs on this album. There probably hasn't been a good 17-song album in all of history (see also: Pussycat Trash, the Muffs), and the Husbands don't buck the trend. The tossed-off-in-five-minutes attitude that lends the best songs their charm also makes the worst songs more annoying. "Bar-B-Q" is a cover, so the Husbands can't be blamed for the songwriting, but they should have rethought the twerpy organ and chirpy vocals. Among the originals, "Sha La La Daniel" could definitely have used some more time in the rehearsal space. In fact, if they had just cut out seven songs, the Husbands would have a great party album. As it is, they've got kind of a mess.

4 out of 5 stars Raucous punkity grrrl-group garage rock fun!.......2006-11-05

The love child of Joan Jett and the Shangri-Las. Like the Donnas, but more raw. (In fact, there is a Shangri-Las cover - track 3 - as well as Wendy Rene - 4, Tarheel Slim and Little Ann - 8, and Roy Orbison - 16.) Lots of quality stuff here, covering a wide range of styles, but all sounding like garage rock. One of my favorite albums so far this year.

4 out of 5 stars It only takes 2 songs.......2006-08-15

Well, here's the thing...I've only heard 2 songs from this new album but definitely own the first one and I can already tell this album is no disapppointment. These chicks knew they were recording an album that day unlike pansy divisionists like Tool or AFI...if you're fans of these losers then you won't like the full out avante-garage onslaught as represented here by The Husbands. Do yourself a favor...quit whining, buy this album, and rock out with unabated tenacity

      Album Description

Leo Smit has an impressive pedigree as an American composer and musician. A virtuoso pianist, he has worked closely with such legends as Stravinsky, Balanchine, Copland and Stokowski. He has set more that 75 of Emily Dickinson's poems to music, grouping the works into cycles about related subject matter. The disc contains the world premiere recordings of three of those cycles- Childe Emilie- Memories and Fantasies of Childhood, The Celestrial Thrush- Songs of Music and Bird, and The White Diadem- Songs About Poets and Poetry. Smit's songs display great sensitivity to Dickinson's very personal world, and reflect the poet's emotional range by adopting an extremely colorful palette. The songs frequently veer from the simple and tonal to more rhythmically complex and chromatic settings, always alert to word and mood.

      Album Description

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.

Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.

Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Odd But Compelling.......2005-04-25

This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.

Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.

      5 out of 5 stars Seasons.......2004-10-11

If tourmates Windy & Carl specialize in densely beautiful atmospheric soundscapes, then Landing is its lighter, shimmering counterpart. Where Windy & Carl use a myriad of effects pedals to coax the perfect drone out of a couple of guitars, Landing achieves a similar result with a drizzle of plucked strings over a bed of floating ambience.

The difference, though, is that, after a smattering of full lengths and EPs of prime ambient music, Landing has finally woken up from its blissful slumber and created eight of the loveliest ambient pieces that take measures toward becoming actual songs. Sure, much of the record is free-floating, but at least part of every song has some structure by which to identify it.

The theme of the album is, of course, seasons, and Landing seems to be more concerned with the colder seasons of fall and winter. Beginning with the gorgeously dreamy "Fall Song," the band captures the plaintive nature of these two seasons--a coolness that somehow feels very warm. "First Snow" is another standout, with its lilting beginning melody that transforms into something free and uplifting, and "Clarke Street" waltzes with the grace of falling leaves.

Seasons is an accomplished album because of its melding of atmosphere and song structure--two elements at odds with each other in American indie rock of the 1990s. But artistic merit aside, this is music to be truly enjoyed. Listen to "Encircled (Through Fallen Leaves)" and see if it doesn't turn the tree you've seen in the backyard for ages into an exceptional thing of beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Like Low? Love Landing........2003-06-18

well, if you like Low you'll love Landing. Combining acoustic and electric guitars with a hint of drums (with brushes of course) creates the unique sound heard on Seasons. Songs seem to melt into eachother and sometimes themselves (encircled (through fallen leaves)) (track 2). Autumn is the main feel of this entire 8 song album, it's perfect for fall driving or contemplating. By no means an upbeat record and by all means a must have.

      5 out of 5 stars I Love It!.......2003-12-21

This is a great CD and I am so proud that you are from Memphis. I just saw you last night at the Vine in concert and love your voice. When I pop this CD into my car, It surprised me to hear such polish tracks, unlike what I hear around this town from other gospel artists. You have such a great CD and several hit records in my opinion. Your voice is simply remarkable. My Faith, the title song is just awesome and the track before this made me cry because it was touching. Keep up the great work! By the way, your producer is very talented and sooooo cute too, hook a sister up if he's not married! :)

      5 out of 5 stars I love this voice!.......2003-12-18

I really like this artist (Ivyia) voice, its very sweet and soulful but quite unique! I really love Master's Hands, Pray and Never Let Ya Breakup My Home! The best part, these songs are right after each other and that's a major plus for me! You will not regret purchasing this CD, its a really good compilation of music and I am glad that someone decided to make a CD where all the songs are good and worth the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-12-12

I like this project! It's a fresh sound and some very nice grooves as well as spirit moving songs. The song "My Faith" will definitely move you to tears.

            Album Description

"It's a beautiful recording." - Todd Hallawell, 1997 Winfield Fingerpicking Guitar Champion. Summer Storm is Tom Lamson's first album and was engineered and produced by Tom in his home studio. From start to finish it is solo fingerstyle guitar. It includes 6 original songs, several melodic classical pieces, the obligatory Beatles tune, and his arrangement of "Letter From Home," written by his favorite jazz guitarist Pat Metheny.
