For the second of 1997's dueling Buddhist epics (the other being Seven Days in Tibet, scored by John Williams), director Martin Scorsese made a wise--if commercially challenging--choice in tapping noted minimalist composer Philip Glass to score Kundun. Glass (who's previously scored the avant garde documentary Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, Mishima, and the strange Candyman horror series), is the perfect choice here; his own Buddhist beliefs play a key role in meshing image and music. Glass's familiar compositional techniques are wedded on Kundun to a sensitive use of ethnic instruments and the voices of the Gyuto Monks, adding an aura of spiritual power missing from most Hollywood fare. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous blending of music, film and subject.......2005-02-27
First, let me explain that I absolutely love the film Kundun.
I beleive it is a true work of art/ labor of love that didn't receive the recognition it so much deserves.
Let me skip to the big point-- the last 10 minutes of this film is a near perfect blend of music that is spot- on for the subject matter, which is enlightenment.
My guess is that a *very conscious* person had a lot to do with the creation, blending & timing of the music, script and film, especially for the last ten minutes-- OR that it was a total coincidence that it came out to be so near perfect. (either is very much in keeping with the movie's theme, which is NOT the Dalai Lama at all, but enlightenment)
Not for everyone, and I'm afraid I may have built it up in your mind too highly, so that you'll feel let down by the actual expereince of the music itself, I can say that *everytime* I listen to the last ten minutes especially (titled Escape to India), I cry for joy at *experiencing* a few minutes of the most sublime enlightenment, tears, sorrow & simple joy and wonder at being alive in this dance of life myself.
Thank you, Phillip Glass, Martin Scorcese and all those involved in this brilliant study of how a culture's focus on a single individual being assumed to be enlightened-- and his training to actually act the part, resulted in a person of great compassion, richness and insight.
In other words, their culture made him enlightened by treating him as enlightened.
What if we were all assumed to be enlightened and treated as such-- what difference would that make to you, at this very moment, dear reader, as you absorb these words? If that sentence has any impact on you at all, then you'll likely be *deeply moved* by both the movie and soundtrack.
Hypnotic.......2001-12-01
I may be in the minority of the reviewers here, in that I have never seen the movie "Kundun". I picked up this cd because it looked interesting (I know...u can't judge a book, or cd in this case, by it's cover), but I am a great experimentor and I love 'discovering' different forms and types of music. And this looked intriguing and different. I thought it might be hard to get into, but not at all. From the opening track I was spellbound. I find the whole album to be very dark and mysterious...captivating, hypnotic and spellbinding. It is unlike any soundtrack that I own, and I love it. I've been playing it straight for the last 3 days, and the more I hear it the more I find to like. It's a wonderful cd to relax and meditate too. It is very soothing. Now I just have to see the movie too. :)
Middling.......2000-05-23
You may like Glass, you may like his previous film music, but you may not like this. Just sharing the category I'm in!
Glass has done a lot of great work, and also a good deal of mediocre work, and this score is definitely in the latter. While it works well with the movie, listening to it on it's own is a disappointment. The difference between this and the great "Koyanisqaatsi" is important. The music for that movie was written with a core focus that permeates each piece, and althought the individuals sections are much longer than in "Kundun," interest never wanes. On this soundtrack, however, the trademark repetition never really catches hold, since there always seems to be a crucial musical element missing, as if there was nothing but accompaniment. While the tracks are briefer, they say very little, and there's no build up of musical drama. Of course, it's a soundtrack, and a good accompaniment to the other element of the movie, but as a stand alone recording it doesn't work.
this Glass guy is really getting to me.......2000-04-21
I used to HATE Philip Glass. I thought, how can such a no-talent hack get work-- all he does is make the same music and recycle it! Then I saw Koyanasqatsi and Powaqqatsi. Powaqqatsi really impressed me, particularly because of the music. I saw the CD sitting in a record store one day, and bought it (the clerk even forgot to charge me for it!)
Not less than a week ago I wrote a five-star review of the excellent Powaqqatsi soundtrack, relaying how great I thought the music was while knock, knocking Philip Glass for his repetition. After that I began browsing through the other Glass listings, listening to the samples. Later, I saw the Kundun DVD at my video store, and decided to watch it again. The next day, I searched out the soundtrack. I have to take back the statement I made about never having to hear another Glass score. Granted, all of his music seems to be variations of a similar theme, but he can take that in many directions. Kundun has an entirely different feel than Powaqqatsi. It is meditative, while Powaqqatsi is like a celebration of life. I own two Glass albums now, and now it seems likely that I'll own three (the Glass/Shankar collaboration looks appealing). I wouldn't have been able to fathom that a year ago.
Like Tibet:moving,haunting,enlightening..........1999-12-16
A film score like this comes around very rarely-Philip Glass''Kundun'is so powerful and inspired that one may wonder whether the music generated the brilliant movie or the other way around. However, I believe that this soundtrack is quite satisfying on its own;one does not really have to see the film in order to be moved by such a marvelous piece of work.

Album Description
Mandala is a journey that invites one on an adventure of the spirit and imagination. With the intensity of `Kokoro' to the elegantly gentle `Planet', Kitaro's manages to intertwine many diverse elements in a tightly interwoven scheme that will delight the senses and move one to an appreciation of the extraordinary.

Epic.......2005-08-07
This music is very beautiful and it sometimes has an epic feel to it, but I am not a big Kitaro fan. If you want great music with an Asian style feel to it, check out Himekami Moonwater/Snow Goddess and Mai Eri Sugai.
One of Kitaro's finest moments! An instrumental classic........2003-12-29
Released in 1994, "Mandala" is one of the finest overall release from Japanese synthesist/composer/multi-instrumentalist Kitaro - and this is quite a compliment for an artist with such an impressive catalog! To give a bit of historical perspective; this album appeared a few years after the acclaimed release of Kitaro's majestic, orchestral concept work "Kojiki", a sentimental favorite of "new age music" fans, and certainly a hard act to follow! With "Mandala", Kitaro seemed to find inspiration by blending some new, exciting, and exotic sounds into his music (sitar, Native American flute, Oriental horns, etc.) while still holding on to those familiar synthesizer sounds that make him so distinctive as an artist. There is also more of an emphasis on electric guitars here, and Kitaro (who played most of the instuments himself) shows himself to be quite a gifted axe man. The album, as a whole, flows well from track to track, and there is a bit more musical diversity than is usally found on Kitaro's albums. The opening title track ("Mandala") begins with with a spacy, Pink Floyd-ish guitar/synth intro, then builds into a booming classical melody. There is also a bit of a Floyd-ian vibe on "Chant From the Heart", perhaps the closest that Kitaro has come to an out and out prog-rock tune (and stangely enough, for a song with "Chant" in its title, the actual vocal chanting is so submilinal that you may miss it enless you listen with a good set of headphones.) "Dance of Sarasvati" begins with a joyful vibe, then evolves into a more mysical groove with some strong middle eastern influences...then unepectedly evolves back to it's original theme! "Planet" is a short, gentle piece with classical overtones. "Crystal Tears" and "Scope" are both in the tradition of Kitaro's more atmpospheric compositions (the former featuring a great Tangerine Dream-inspired sequencer backdrop.) One of Kitaro's more unusual compositions, "Winds of Youth", begins in seeming chaos, then slowly evolves into into an tightly-structred piece fueled by some nice acoustic sounds (interestingly, the live version found on "An Enchanted Evening" bears little resemblance to the original recording found here.) But for me it is the album closer "Kokoro" that steals the show here. This is truly one of the most haunting melodies that Kitaro has ever crafted, and the intricate arrangement here (blending layers of wailing guitars, mellow synths, and orchestral percussion) simply swells with emotion! All in all, if you love Kitaro, new age music, or even some "world music" flavors, you can't go too far wrong with this one.
One of my favorite ........2003-01-23
One of my favorite Kitaro CDs . I discover Kitaro music in late 80's , just when I started writing . And when I write , I have to have some music on background , what helps me to stay constantly in particula mood . Kitaro's music is perfect for that . I call every his song my own name ( ocean dream , flight thrue the clouds , higher and higher ... ). Long time ago I couldn't fell asleep without his music .
On this CD , " Scope " is my favorite .

Although I think Kitaro relies on his electric guitar a little too much ~~~ it is still a very good album. The Dance of Saravati is indeed very good. But Planet and Winds of Youth are just breathtakingly superb! Planet is soft and melodic (Kitaro's composing at its best) whereas Winds of Youth is just solid and invigorating.

Meditation can be enjoyable!.......2002-01-10
One of my favorite meditations created by the post-modern Indian mystic Osho. Designed to help practitioners move thru a cathartic process to discover their natural center. The basic theme is to follow various circular motions (much like your mind) in 15 minute musical intervals, using your body, finally going inside. This as well as other of Osho's meditations are discussed in "Meditation, The First and Last Freedom" a very worthwhile book, available here on amazon.com. Peace, ....

For years I have seen this ballet and heard the totally wonderful music that George Balanchine created Bugaku on it. It is a wonderful thing to have this recording, and match the memories together of music and dance.
Specially remenbering the memories of Alegra Kent and Eddie Villella, dancing the lead roles witch were created on them.

I compared Merlet's performance with that of Kathryn Stott, especially
the last Nocturne, #13. Merlet's has more tragedy and bite, call it pathos. Stott's( as well as JP Collard's) are likewise amazing. Other pieces here ripple amaziingly. Theme and Variations is great.
This is an oft played CD, it has lasted well, very enjoyable.

Product Description
Guitarist, singer, songwriter, and gifted storyteller, Giovanni Mandala, has just released his solo CD, Hydra. In this breathtakingly original collection of songs, forging new ground somewhere between Rob Thomas and the Goo Goo Dolls, we re led through a hero s journey that embraces both the highs and lows of life. We navigate a myriad of emotional transitions through the soul of a muse who invites each of us to confront our own demons while we re called to courage as we triumph through the ages. The songs and their poignant messages are filled with life, love, and lust. The new work, complete with 10 original rock songs that combine acoustic and electric guitar, is available at Amazon.com The CD begins with Change, a funky rock testament to the power of finding a second chance in life a theme that s close to Mandala s personal story. It s Over recounts love lost, when all the glittering gold turns coldly into lies. This theme continues with Switchblade, an up-tempo, hard-driving rock tune that chronicles the pain of deceit and the turning away from our emotional prisons. With Stay, a power rock ballad, we are touched by a mood that seeks to hold onto love, even though all hope is gone. Hydra is the CD s title track, in which Mandala tells the story of his life and his own coming of age through temptation and a relentless search for truth, even amidst the dark side. With Courage, the mood shifts. It opens with beautiful acoustic guitar, lamenting stories of loss in a poetic lyric that is met with a solid electric chorus section that reminds us of the inner resources of strength that can keep us moving forward, even against all odds. Hunger Comes is a swampy blues sound that calls our souls to find the nourishment we all crave. And this leads to Fantasy, which takes us on a hot and passionate journey through fire and grace, probing the depths of sexual fantasy and the nature of earthy delights. In Inside Out, where Bad Company meets the Moody Blues, Mandala brings us back to a darker mood, with heartfelt sadness when our best is not good enough. And this leads us to the final track, One Last Breath, a hard driving acoustic rock tune, that mixes a rap section with a counterpoint of street edginess that invites us to look deep within our soul, feeling alive in the essence of our being. Mandala has been a musician for several decades. He has performed in night club venues such as the Roxy, the Pallidium, and the Whiskey. In 2000 he co-wrote and co-produced a CD titled Change in the Weather under the band name, "Chattie Kathy. He has performed with the Von Ryan s Express, Balance, 3-2 Look, and the Trish Perry Band. His new solo CD, Hydra, is the culmination of three years of writing, inspired by the beauty of Northern California and a life s worth of complex, challenging, and ultimately transformational experiences. Giovanni will be performing at the Consciousness in Action Conference in Palm Springs in August, 2007. Bach at it's best!.......2002-01-21
There are so many recordings of The Goldberg Variations, that it is hard to choose. I picked up a copy of this on my vacation to Arizona. What a great find! The music is ethereal and warm. Zhu Xiao-Mei is extremely talented and brings Bach's spirit in this music to life. I do like Glenn Gould but this is a uniquely different version of The Variations. An excellent addition to any collection.
