Amazon.com essential recording
An album even the technophobic couldn't ignore, The Fat of the Land made Prodigy one of the first U.K. rave acts to infiltrate pop culture. Hard-core hip-hop-derived breakbeats, layers of unabashed (but creative) sampling, and meaningless shouted lyrics struck a chord beyond the electronic-music community. The inclusion of "Firestarter" and "Breathe" (both previously released hit singles) certainly aided the disc's widespread success, but it was the ferocity (and controversy) of "Smack My Bitch Up" that caught the world's attention. Guest Shahin Bada's Indian vocalizations convey the sense that dance music has come a long way from "Pump Up the Volume"! "Diesel Power," featuring Kool Keith, and "Funky Shit" set a wicked groove; the cover of L7's "Fuel My Fire" recalls the energy of the Sex Pistols. In fact, the dark aggression of The Fat of the Land bears closer resemblance to both rap and punk than the hedonism of techno. Leader Liam Howett simply gives up 10 solid songs with bombastic production values, transforming dance music into the art of noise. --Lisa Ladouceur
Customer Reviews:
If the cover tells you anything, it does describe the album.......2007-07-08
This album, like the crab on the cover, is mean and huge, with a bunch of no-__________ attitude. (that is a really cool cover).
Granted, I took off some points because this isn't perfect, and it won't catch you right always, but it is good, and if you are in the mood, you will sit through it quite easy. Even though it's definitly not an easy listen and won't always grab you (it's a mood thing), when you hit it, it hits big.
Every song on here does it's job, some songs are better than others, (I don't care too much for Fuel My Fire as much as the others), but it is damn _________ creative. And this album always seems to go up to your _________ face and scream out loud the name of the music. IT's another great electronic album, and best of all, it dosen't sound like totally generic ______ like Crazy Frog. It's intense, intense for electronic at least, not as much as some, but electronic music should be that way sometimes. Less (or none at all) words means you have to be more creative with the music, (there's more voices on Fat Of The Land than some electronic music), and that's what real electronic music is ________ all about.
More on the music. I should give you that the music isn't not punk, but a mix. Yeah, mixes are ________headaches, why group so many _______ genres? But it works here, and the music is big beat, electronic dance rave type music, with some rap hip-hop music. No, you won't find any poppy songs, this isn't poppy electronic music. It's the opposite, so you probally won't be too interested the very first time you listen.
It ain't exactly radio friendly music, at least in the U.S. (U.K. is where this kind of stuff is more possible, such as Fatboy Slim).
I wish I could give it nine, because I am having a blast, but I don't think it's quite at the mark, so it dosen't deserve it. But take my word, The Fat Of The Land is awesome. I can't wait to dive into the underground of electronic, but yeah, I'm not really there yet, but for the underground of electronic, you gotta know the big names first.
8.5/10

Customer Reviews:
He only has 10 fingers! Really--only 10........2006-03-13
Tom Constanten composes and plays the ragtime of the gods, and this CD includes one of his best--the 'San Andreas Stomp', from his US bicentenial suite, 'The Syntax Collector'. If only he'd included the rest of it this CD would be auditory Nirvanna. Many other wonderful things too including some electronically prepared keyboard pieces, some classical piecies (including a lovely Bach), and some splendidly played Grateful Dead tunes (Tom's is one of my favorite recordings of 'Dark Star'). But the treasures are Tom's own compositions including 'Encodex Punctilious'. And is piano chops are close to unbelievable. Some of these pieces are technically unplayable for most earthling pianists.
You'll never know how much you need this CD 'till you get it.

88 Keys to Tomorrow
Gaff Music GAFF0511
Among these 21 cuts are ten Constanten originals, a Chopin, a Bach, a Haydn, a Curtis Mayfield, a Jerry Garcia and several explorations of traditional, classical forms. Some are recorded on real pianos and others on electronic keyboards. There is no instrument preference evident. This is a recorded love affair between a man and the keyboard as a basic musical instrument form.
They're good for stride and ragtime, so Constanten plays and plays with stride and ragtime on "San Andreas Stomp." Vince Guaraldi (Charlie Brown cartoon themes)certainly developed a style for keyboard, so Constanten flirts with the Guaraldi style on "Land of the Hassled and Free." Gospel fervor and confidence can certainly be expressed well with a strong left hand on the piano, so "People Get Ready." And so on through 21 examples of how to best use keyboards to create audio beauty. What is most amazing about this record is that, with all the respect for and knowledge of composers displayed throughout, Constanten is constantly himself. There is a warm wit about his playing, even on the most traditional numbers, that is wholly unique.
More than pleasant to the average ear, this CD and accompanying liner notes are a textbook for those interested in the more technical aspects of music and music recording. In describing one piece, Constanten asks, "When was the last time you encountered stretto and inversion at the same time?" Frankly, I don't have a clue, but for those who do, I presume it's a novel and grand experience. Recorded in several locations between '88 and '94, the album has surprising continuity . . . Bach and Garcia, Yamaha Clavinola and Bosendorfer get along better than one might think, and this, too, is made possible by the highly extroverted character of the artist.
I believe this one will be particularly good for long trips and rainy afternoon dozes.
