Before Broadway was Disneyfied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their even more popular work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. Almost every tune in Mermaid has its (slightly inferior) counterpart in Beauty, for example. But there's no topping the Oscar-winning calypso show-stopper, "Under the Sea"--in which a Caribbean crab convinces you that "Darlin' it's better/Down where it's wetter." Other songs, just as delightful, are even more impressive in the context of the movie. The rapturous "Kiss the Girl" accompanies a scene in which, despite the whispered urgings of creatures all around, the romantic hero does not act on the title's advice! That's the kind of abstract dramatic (OK, comedic) conceit you'd expect from Harold Pinter rather than Disney. And the gruesomely hilarious "Les Poissons" gives us a fisheye view of a kitchen where the seafood chef is a sort of French Ed Gein--a sadistic murderer who brutally tortures and chops up his victims, then eats them! Who says Disney never did black comedy? "...I stuff you with bread/It won't hurt, 'cause you're dead/And you're certainly lucky you are...." Lyricist Ashman may not have been Cole Porter, but he was the next best thing. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Loved it then. Loved it now........2007-04-10

Little Mermaid was the first video I ever owned myself. Loved it from the first day I saw it. I don't hold the same view as I did as a child but it's still a wonderful story. And the music is just plain fun. The best part of this special edition is Ashley Tisdale's rendition of Kiss The Girl. Let me start by saying I have issues about Disney's need to turn every actor into a singer and every singer into an actor and the promote them to the ends of the earth. And it's not so much Ashley Tisdale - though she's very talented - that makes me love this version of the song. Whoever revised the arrangement is who I'd like to really thank. I love every thing about how this version was put together. Upbeat. Fun. Totally "sqeeable". But then I'm a hopeless romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Under da Sea.......2007-03-05

We actually own the CD that was originally released when the movie was first released. It is one of our favorites. I'm not sure what several others are talking about when they say this one has the origninal score. The CD's have the same exact music, with the exception of the 2nd CD. As for the songs on the 2nd CD, we have heard several on Radio Disney. They are okay once you get passed the whole remake issue. I actually enjoy the Jonas Brothers version of Poor Unfortunate Souls.

5 out of 5 stars little mermaid soundtrack.......2007-02-21

i bought this for my 5 year old --who loves ariel and all the princesses---it is great for her she loves to sing and dance to all the songs and she knows the songs inside and out--i recomend this product if your child loves the movie she will love this soundtrack

5 out of 5 stars a brilliant rebirth in film and song.......2006-11-24

by 1989, disney animation was pretty much dead, the department itself was pretty close to getting axed. basically all hopes were riding on the little mermaid. cinematically it is of course a gem and it managed to bring about the renowned disney rennisaince that lasted untill around the mid to late 1990's. musically, this soundtrack jumpstarted the dead musical genre as well. alan menken and howard ashman teamed up for the first time on a disney picture wiht amazing results.

alan menken's first of four academy award winning scores is a musical gem. the intense flourishes on the main titles and in the happy ending finale are truly beautiful but the fun lighter tone that the majority of the score takes on is great to hear. the score really lightens up the piece and gives it an airiness (ironically enough) and allows the whole piece to really take on a fun fresh sound that is crucial for the film to work

SCORE 5 out of 5

as far as the songs go, this may just be the most consistanly good soundtrack all the songs are fun and fresh but advance the story well. no other album really contains as many sure fire hits as this one. menken and ashman made great songs here that utilize the necessary carribean influences that are truly wonderful.

FATHOMS BELOW - this is a fun opener that provides a great sense of nautical mythology and fun. it sets the film up well for the following songs that are obveously meant to juxtapose it. originally, the song was longer, but jeffery katzanberg required that ashman shorten the lyrics, the original extended version can be found on the special edition 2006 dvd.
5 out of 5

DAUGHTERS OF TRITON - this short little snipet introduces all of ariel's sisters. its pretty bland and dry and thankfully its quick. if it were longer it would definately bring the entire soundtrack down, but luckilly its short and over with quickly
3 out of 5

PART OF YOUR WORLD - this is ariel's only real song and it is truly beautiful. her song of longing is emotional and jodi benson's vocals take to a whole other level. many have covered this song, but none have topped benson's heartfealt version that combines longing and real sorrow. A+
5 out of 5

PART OF YOUR WORLD (REPRISE) - here is that trademark mermaid-on-rock scene from the movie and the fact that benson gets to belt out the ending bars makes this a real treat even though its so short, but this definately ranks right up there with the full version, and possibly tops it.
5 out of 5

UNDER THE SEA - this fun song was the oscar winner for best original song and it combines great carribean rhythms and sounds wiht fun fresh and witty lyrics to epitomize the fun and freshness that the little mermaid brought to the screen. the infecteous song is one that jsut stays in your head and wont leave too, but its all ok since this is such a great song.
5 out of 5

POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS - this is ursula's big number and pat caroll is amazing at it. this song is wickidly entertaining and great. the darkly comic tone and cabaret feel make this a great vilian song and a great song in general. the incredable rollar coaster of intensities make this an impressive number that never loses the audience's interest impressively enough.
5 out of 5

LES POISSONS - this song has gotten a lot of credit for its comedic strengths, but really this is the weakest song on the whole soundtrack. it's just too comical and goes too far over the top. it fits well in the film, but feels mildly disjointed on the soundtrack itself.
4 out of 5

KISS THE GIRL - this is the second oscar nominated song and it is possibly the best of all. the combination of soft vocals provided by samuel e wright and the great soft tropical rhythms make this song an unexpected winner. on paper, these combinations are strange for a defining love song, but it all comes together with great ease.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5

this entire piece brings an impressive combination of airiness and emotion to make a musical soundtrack that is truly spectacular. menken and ashman showed for the first time their true greatness when working together. this piece isn't their greatest, but it was a great starting point that revitilized what a movie musical and disney film could truly be. this timeless classic is a wonder to hear and never gets old or tired.

5 out of 5 stars JUST like the movie!.......2006-10-25

Listening to this in it's entirety is almost as great as watching the movie. My daughter gets happy when she hears the first couple of notes and runs to the TV thinking the movie is on. I was really planning on buying the original CD that was released in 1988 because there were not many reviews for this new release but I'm so glad I changed my mind. This CD sounds great and is truely a score of the movie. Every song is there. If you end up not liking the second CD, doesn't matter because the 1st cd is worth your money already, I didn't mind the 2nd cd but that's not why I purchased the set anyway. made no difference to me, we just keep the first one on repeat and love every minute of it.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

A ghost, a band, a troubadour. Easily the strangest co-op project ever, and easily one of the finest and most evocative albums of the year. British socialist and folkie Billy Bragg was given unprecedented access to Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics. Teaming up with alt-country band Wilco and quoting from more than 50 years of country, folk, and rock music, Billy and company bring Guthrie's politics, poetry, and morality to the end of the century and prove he's as necessary now as ever. --Tod Nelson

Amazon.com essential recording

When you first heard that Billy Bragg and Wilco were teaming up to set some Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, you knew it'd be an interesting project. But did anyone realistically think Mermaid Avenue would also wind up being one of 1998's finest albums? That's exactly what it is, a distinction it pulls off by simultaneously honoring Guthrie and blasting away any folksy expectations we might have of his music. Walking Guthrie's World War II-era lyrics into the 20th century's second, rock & roll half, Bragg and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy take turns on lead vocals, and the entire group collaborates on a sound that draws on folk- and country-rock, from Bob Dylan and the Band to Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo. The results are nearly flawless, ranging from yearning laments and playful children's rockers to horny ballads and brave protest songs that are not merely political but also profoundly moral. Like all of Guthrie's work, Mermaid Avenue is music to live better by. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Maybe my favourite record.......2007-06-01

I think everything has been said already in the previous reviews so there's not much - or rather nothing - I can add.

All I wanted to say is that this is a very special record for me. I listen to a lot of music and own several hundred CDs but this one is really outstanding. I think that this record is really emotional but in a pleasent kind of way. A lot of songs on the album bring tears to my eyes everytime I hear them. The whole project was a great idea and one can feel that the participators put all their heart and love into it.

In short: Mermaid Avenue is one of the records that makes live worth living for me.

I'm a fan of Wilco but I love this one better than any of their studio-albums.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Nora! Great Idea.......2007-05-19

We should all thank Nora Gutherie for selecting Billy Bragg and Wilco to put this album together. What a fantastic combination. There are several wonderful songs on this cd. My favorite is "Hesitating Beauty". I was lucky enough to see Wilco perform this on Prairie Home Comapanion last week. It caused me to revisit this album and I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Walt Whitman previously unrecorded.......2007-04-24

Billy Bragg and Wilco (what a combo!) team up on previously unrecorded Walt Whitman writings and the result is increcible. This is still one of my favorite albums, and, although my husband and I play a wide variety of music, this is an album that everyone likes. For me, it's perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars An incredibly productive colloboration...........2007-04-08

This is one of my all time favorite albums. It is a great colloboration between Wilco, who is one of the greatest bands to come out of the 1990's. I think Jeff Tweedy may be the greatest songwriter working today. For all the talk of the 90's being the grunge, "ironic" decade, there were a few real artists working under the radar, and Wilco/Tweedy was one of them. Billy Bragg is very good here as well. The songs are absolutely wonderful, with the first 5 songs absolutely perfect. Walt Whitman's Niece is a rousing opening number, and California Stars is ethereral and delicate, one of the most beautiful songs ever. Christ for President is really good, along with the raucous I Guess I Planted. Sadly, there will more than likely no more Mermaid Avenue albums, as Bragg and Tweedy weren't seeing eye to eye on a lot of things. Bragg is a political activist, and really wanted to concentrate strictly on Guthrie's political writings. Tweedy wanted to do more of the personal lyrics, and wanted to stay away from the political stuff. Regardless, this album is a masterpiece, and I'm glad that Nora Guthrie instigated this project, and gave it to two passionate, immensely talented people to interpret her late father's lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars There are some real jewels here.......2007-03-01

"California Stars" is as beautiful a song as I have ever heard, all the credit in the world to Wilco for really bringing those lyrics to life. I think Woody Guthrie would have been more than thrilled with the rendition. Moreover, Bragg does a nice job with "Way Over Yander.." I think these are the two clearly outstanding songs on the album. My problem with this album is that some of the other songs are a tad weak, especially the ones that tend to be Bragg numbers. I think Wilco does carry their weight for the most part, but if you are expecting "Summerteeth" or "Yankee Hotel.." you will be very letdown.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Mermaid Avenue, Vol. II finds Billy Bragg & Wilco setting Woody Guthrie's words to their own music a second time. The result is more sonically diverse than the first installment, but just as rewarding. With guests Natalie Merchant and bluesman Corey Harris lending their voices to this new-century hootenanny, this 15-song disc manages to capture the collective spirit of both IWW and the WTO times. Woody would've been proud of the initial collection; he'd be prouder still of this one. --Steven Stolder

Amazon.com

Who knew that after the undeniable, sometimes shimmering, sometimes rustic magic of Mermaid Avenue that there was enough quality material for a second volume? By setting their own music to Woody Guthrie's lyrics, Billy Bragg and Wilco once again offer a 50-minute testament to Guthrie's long, dynamic shadow. This sophomore meeting is as balanced between the up-tempo and the down-tempo as was the first Mermaid. Jeff Tweedy's rasp gives all the Wilco-driven tunes a certain grit, and the songs Bragg takes on have a luminescent, frank earnestness that intensifies the delivery of Guthrie's lyrical social critiques. "Hot Rod Hotel," with Bragg on the mic, melds the two approaches best, and "Secret of the Sea" is the CD's poppiest centerpiece--aptly aimed at radio airplay like the first Mermaid's "California Stars." Natalie Merchant's playful "I Was Born" is brief but sweet, just as bluesman Corey Harris's "Against the Law" is an uplift, with his passionate vocal wail mirroring the political gist of Guthrie's words. The moody closers "Black Wind Blowing" and "Someday, Some Morning, Sometime" end Volume 2 with a pair of sweetly sad gems, one a Bragg-sung folk blues that mourns the loss of cotton crops in the American dustbowl era, the other a Tweedy-sung paean to lost love. At the dawn of a new millennium, with labor and the distribution of wealth as pressing historical issues that disrupt every International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization soiree, the time is right for Woody. --Andrew Bartlett

Im writing this because i beleive one song REMEBER THE MOUNTAIN BED is one,if not the most meaningful, sublime, peices of poetry, prose, songwiting i have ever heard..this song has sat with me since i first heard it..actually i only have to think of it and im moved...the depth of understanding of the human condition, love, lose, the earth, the elements, love, humanity, the insights into the purpose of lifeand mandkind, etc etc is so utterly compeling and mind numbing.the greatest love song ever written .i get obssessed about this song, i find myself disolving into another place, void of all thats around me.....how did woody guthrie find himself of such composure, empathy and understanding to reach inside of himself and outside of himself to write one of the most perfect peices of art...and then there is WILCO and JEFF TWEEDY...honoring these words so beautifully..jeff tweedys vocals and the bands sympathetic arrangment make this one of music,c highest benchmarks..as great as anything..by anyone..at anytime..ever recorded
oh the other WILCO stuff here is also fantastic..i havent really sat thru the billy bragg..but i will....buy this for REMEMBER THE MOUNTAIN BED alone..wow id love to know what you think

3 out of 5 stars Continues winning homage but feels less memorable .......2007-05-01

Admirable collaboration paying tribute to folk hero Guthrie is a serviceable update to an epic legacy, a hard enough feat in itself that garnered much praise. But after this second volume appeared a few years later, perhaps the conceptual accomplishments gave way to seeing some unimpressive songwriting for what it was. The production and attitude is all there to pull it off, especially well for fans of folk rock (mixed of course with the country sounds of Wilco), but to say this would be necessary to anyone who has the first volume and is not absolutely in love with it would be untrue. Having said that, the band continued to present a polished relevance to Guthrie's legacy in the authentic synergy Bragg and Wilco have. Some gems underneath the generic sounding majority may beckon the devoted to purchase this and spin a great mix from the two volumes.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most treasured albums.......2006-06-15

I got this as a present from a friend. I still don't quite like Wilco, but I learned to like Bragg after this. His sarcasm & reticence combines nicely with Guthrie's lyrics. Great songs to shout along to in the car, especially Joe DiMaggio. Black Wind Blowing is sad but well suited to being played very loud.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but disappointing...3 1/2 stars.......2005-10-11

My younger brother made a good point, I thought, when he told me this album should never have been made. Instead, he said, Woody Guthrie's daughter should have found two other artists--another singer, and another band, even--and had THEM do volume two. Hayden and The Flaming Lips. Soltero and Yo La Tengo. Daniel Johnston and Neutral Milk Hotel. Morrissey and The Postal Service. It could have still used Woody Guthrie's lyrics, but it would have been something fresh...not this...and that format could have gone on indefinitely for any number of albums.
This, however, is a rehash of volume one.
Thankfully, Wilco went back into the studio to record some new songs--this album's best songs--but all we have from Billy Bragg are the outtakes from the first album, and Natalie Merchant's song on this volume...well...to put it nicely...sucks.
"Airline To Heaven" by Wilco is an outstanding song, using Bible verses in its lyrics and an exciting build. "Secrets Of The Sea" is a good one as well, as is "Someday, Some Morning, Sometime," but overall this album should never have happened. Volume one was good, and they should have left it alone.
I saw Billy Bragg on tour for this album--the show was awful, and most of the songs he played were bad covers of the songs Wilco had written--and he hinted there might be a volume three.
Please God, no. Spare us, please. Spare us all. Let these artists put their talents to use in some way better. Let Billy Bragg return to "Workers Playtime," and keep him away from Wilco. They're doing fine without him.

3 out of 5 stars What did you expect, it's a sequel!.......2005-07-08

Of course it's not as good as the first. They took the best material they had and used it on Volume 1. Well, mostly. Somehow they left behind "Remember the Mountain Bed," a wistful song with a fairy-tale quality; "Joe Dimaggio's Done It Again," a rollicking period piece; and "Feed Of Man," which I'm still a little puzzled by, but in a good way. I just noticed that the three songs I've mentioned are all sung by Jeff Tweedy. That may be a coincidence, but he does seem to take the reins of this project over from Billy Bragg. Bragg fans needn't worry, though; it's all about the lyrics, and the legacy of the greatest folksinger ever.

Sinéad Lohan discounts any Irish or folk influences in her music, but they remain a propulsive force behind the contemporary pop sheen of her U.S. debut album, No Mermaid. Her tunes have the immediate simplicity of folk anthems, but her quixotic lyrics delve deeply and sometimes dramatically into the '90s psyche. Weaned on Top of the Pops, Sting, and Paul Weller rather than jigs and reels, Lohan never sacrifices originality and character within her creatively populist approach. She is well served by a creative production (from Daniel Lanois associate Malcom Burn), weaving a swirling, textured backdrop of funky folk and electronica that perfectly compliments her wryly personal observations on life and love. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years~.......2007-05-30

Sinead Lohan's Freshman effort "no mermaid" stilll holds up even after all of these years. I randomly pluck this treasure from my CD collection and let it play straight through with no regrets. My favorite tracks are 1, 2, 3 and 12 but each track can stand on it's own and each one is a treasure. With a voice that soothes and a plucky upbeat attitude this CD should be in everyone's collection. It's truly a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Over 5 years and still my favorite CD!.......2006-06-14

Ok already, where is her next album! I would have worn out several tapes by now if it wasn't for CDs - and now my iPod. I first heard her sing "Believe it if you like" on the Gael Force DVD and I had to look her up. For those who love her music, the Gael Force DVD is definitely worth it - her eyes are just as soul catching as her voice and this version is just her and her guitar and no other electronic backup...it's just pure joy! You can also go to her website and download the large version of "Whatever It Takes" which is now my favorite video on my iPod (and yes, you can use the iTunes software to convert the movie file to an iPod format). If you haven't listed to Sinead, I suggest you try the video on her website and than after you are hooked, come back here and buy her CD!

Succinctly, this CD is to the music industry what The Shawshank Redemption is to the film industry - the sleeper of the century.

I was only recently able to re-purchase this album because my other one was lost. As soon as I heard it again I remembered why I was so desperate to get it back. Love her sound. Love the music. Quality of cd is outstanding. Definitely a five star album!

5 out of 5 stars Holds up beautifully over time..........2005-02-13

As often happens with with new music, I played this daily for after I first bought it 4, maybe 5 years ago. Gradaually other music and artists received more and more of my attention; "No Mermaid" dropped out of the 'regular' listening rotation and then even off my 'occasional' list. It sat in my collection unlistened to for what now seems an embarrassingly long time. Then, a few weeks ago, I heard someone mention Lohen's name. When I returned home I put the disc in and pressed "play." Simultaneously I had the joy of rediscovering this 5-star gem and regret that I had let it fade into musical oblivion. Somehow the bitter-sweet feeling suited what I was hearing. I now play "No Mermaid" at least daily.

As others have observed, this is an album (can I still say 'album' these days?) that is brimming with A-list tracks. There's not even one weak, "filler" track. Her voice is sublime. Some other reviewers have compared it to Sarah McLachlan's, but I don't hear her in Lohen's voice (although I do hear her in the writing). I would compare Lohen more to Eleanor McEvoy with smaller measures of Beth Orton and Annie Haslam mixed in. The production on "No Mermaid" is superb: tight and so organic you won't notice it unless you *want* to. The pacing is wonderful, speeding up and slowing down so naturally, as if this were simply the way it was *meant* to be.

Buy "No Mermaid" today. Take it home. Play it. You, too, will fall in love with it (and with Sinead Lohen).

Amazon.com essential recording

Hats off for Mr. Alan Menken for the breathtaking score for this motion picture.

Winner of 2 academy awards, this cartoon movie has excelled and reached heights a lot of other movies wanted to reach..

This soundtrack is kinda short but the music in it is just AWESOME!
(and by the way, I added the music to my iPod with no problem)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Part of the Sea!.......2006-07-27

When I was a very little girl, my parents told me the story about a little mermaid that written by Anderson. This was one of the most wonderful stories that I couldn't forget. Several years later, I watched the movie "The Little Mermaid" of Disney. I was deeply attracted by it. And what attracted me most was the music in it. Then my parents bought this soundtrack CD for me as my 14th birthday gift.
I suppose many girls' favorite song in this soundtrack is "Part of Your World". I love this song very much. It still feels so classic even though almost 20 years went by. In this song, Ariel showed that she was so eager to go up to the land. Though the tune is tender and slow, we can feel Ariel's heart and her dreams were so strong, feel how much she believed that her dreams would come true someday. Beautiful and glorious instrumental music, lovely lyric with sweet and dreamy lady vocal, all these made this song so classic and will always be classic. The reprise version of "Part of Your World" is so great as the original version. The tableaux of this reprise version are most unforgettable to me in this movie. "I don't know when, I don't know how, but I know something's starting right now." I'm deeply attracted by this song when every time I listen to it. After I listened to this song, I began to pay more attention to songs that created by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken or performed by Jodi Benson. The song "Under the Sea" is really famous to every Disney fan, though it's not my favorite in the movie. This song is a typical song for the sea in my opinion. It's full-filled with Caribbean feelings, spirited tune, comical lyric and Sebastian's wonderful vocal. At first, I thought Sebastian's voice was strange, and I always skipped "Under the Sea" when every time I listened to this soundtrack. But now, I love his voice very much, then I bought the album "Sebastian from The Little Mermaid" and often listen to it. "Les Poissons" is really a strange but very comical song. When I first listened to it in the movie with my cousin, we couldn't help laughing very loudly. "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is a wonderful song too, it reflected Ursula's ambition. "Kiss the Girl" is a lovely song too, Sebastian's performance and the chorus are great!
Besides all these songs, there is something that made the movie so great, the scores. All these scores are very beautiful, the musical instruments in the scores have been placed perfectly. The scores made the movie very dramatic. I love the track "Main Title" very much, the principal melody in this track is that of "Part of Your World". It's really beautiful, feels just like Ariel's magical stories. The track which I can't help listening to over and over again is "Happy Ending". I always be attracted by the chorus at the end of this track. "Now we can walk, now we can run, now we can stay all day in the sun..." Some other scores are glorious too, and some of them feels just like symphony.
I think that this soundtrack is one of the best of Disney. All the songs were performed by wonderful leading vocals and lovely chorus, all the scores are very beautiful. Well, some of my friends consider that Disney movies and music are only for little kids. I don't agree with this absolutely. Because I think Disney music have not only kids' innocence but also adult thoughts, music in "The Little Mermaid" is a good example. This wonderful soundtrack can be accepted by kids easily, and can be loved by many adults. So, if you're a Disney fan or a person who love music very much, this glorious soundtrack shouldn't be missed by you!

This entertained my kids 8, 4 and 4 for our 6 hour drive to Disneyland. Fun songs!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-04-18

I originally purchased this album after listening to the mp3 of Scurvy. I am now a fan. Every song on this album is fabulous. Although I can't say which song I like the best (I like four or five "the best"), I can say that if you are interested in a fun jaunt into silliness -- this is the CD for you! Although I originally thought that this was a recording only for young children, I'm finding that I too laugh along whenever I hear a really robust HAR-Har-Har!!! I just purchased Captain Bogg and Salty's second CD - "Pegleg Tango", and although it is good in it's own right, "Bedtime Stories for Pirates" seems more classically piratical.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Trade Winds to Ye All!.......2005-03-24

I just finished writing a review for their CD "Pegleg Tango" and realized that this CD needs its fair share as well!

Again, AWESOME! This CD is great fun with its ingenious dialog scripting and sound effects, as well as fantastic vocal harmonizing. The songs are catchy and fun and even as a parent, I find myself singing along! My children (boys 3 & 5) LOVE the song "Scurvy" and laugh each time they hear Salty say "Bunny rabbits!". My personal favorite is "Billy Bones", a wonderfully clever and very creative sea tale and song.

Check out their website at www.eatalime.com.

Great fun - Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids, Great for adults!.......2005-03-02

This is one fun CD and a great band. I have to admit that I bought this CD for myself after catching the band play live. After my son was born, I started playing it for him and was not surprised to see that he loves it too. Now that he is over a year old, he is dancing to it and it won't be long before the singing starts. The album is well crafted and takes you on a journey with stories and music. As you listen, it's not hard to imagine yourself on the deck of a pirate ship with the wind in your hair and surrounded by your loyal crewmates. Most children's CDs drive me mad, especially after repeated playing. This one gets better and better every time I hear it and that is a good thing since it gets played every single day. Har!

5 out of 5 stars ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!.......2005-02-22

This duo is among my favorite acts out there in entertainment today. Both Captain Bogg and Salty are great on there own as they've both headlined stadium tours, but put them together and you have magic. I have a tough time getting my toddler to lay down for a nap, but have you ever tried getting pirates to sleep? I'll tell you it ain't easy. Pirates are kind of hard to control because they are constantly looking for booty. They wear weird clothes and say ARRRRRGGGHHHH and Matees all of the time. Frankly, they are a bit annoying. T-Rex(J Abs) and I went out clubbing with a bunch of pirates we know and it just didn't work out. Chicks don't dig the pegleg and the fact that pirates don't bathe nearly enough. Blueballbeard kept going up ladies and telling them to walk his plank. He would follow that up by farting and saying ARRRRRRRGGHHHHH. It really ruined our chances. That and the fact J Abs has tiny T-Rex arms AND talks like a pirate pretty much meant I wasn't getting any. So take my advice and don't go clubbing with pirates or friends with tiny dinosaur arms that also talk like pirates.

1 out of 5 stars Not much of a Disney Princess CD!.......2006-05-04

Well, Disney has done this again... How can this thing earn money?
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31

I'm going to say it right now --- this CD is good. It's very good. If you're looking for true "Disney princess" tracks and you don't consider Cinderella II, Aladdin and the King of Thieves or Mulan/Lion King to count, then stop now. But it seems like most people are basing their opinions on the sorts of songs they expected from the CD, rather than what's actually on it.

The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.

Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.

Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.

"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.

"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.

"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.

"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.

"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.

Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"

"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.

"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.

"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.

Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.

So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.

1 out of 5 stars Another Repackaging Of Princess Favorites.......2004-04-21

When is Disney ever going to realize that recycling Disney Princess songs aren't such a good idea? As a Disney Princess fan since I was really little I have always enjoyed Disney princess songs. But i am so so so so sick and tired about on just about every Disney album dedicated solely to the Disney Princesses Disney always always ALWAYS has a habit of recycling old princess songs instead of adding new princess songs. I mean people already own half the songs on Princess Favorites and can buy them on the film soundtracks or the Disney princess collection cd. Why I think this cd was released is that Disney was trying to promote the movie Cinderella II Dreams Come True as the songs from that movie are on this cd. But heck one of the songs Put it Together is also on the SUPERSTAR HITS cd. So while this cd may be a redone version of Princess Collection Volume #2 please Please Please PLEASE do not buy,
Thank you very much for your time

2 out of 5 stars Whose Princess Favorites???.......2003-10-15

I would classify only 3 of the songs on this CD as Princess Favorites - Belle, Kiss The Girl and Once Upon A Dream. The rest are either not Princess songs or not favorites.

My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.

We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?

I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2002-04-30

A friend gave this CD to my little girl for her 5th birthday...she was thrilled to get it. The thrill ended as soon as it was played. She wanted to know where the Princesses were.
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28

These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20

For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.

Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.

Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04

Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.

Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

4 out of 5 stars sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30

I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.

    5 out of 5 stars this is a treasure.......2003-05-11

Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.
