The melding of South African styles and Simon's trademark sensibility made for one of the most intriguing albums--not to mention commercial hits--of the '80s. At once lively, thoughtful, gorgeous, and tough, Graceland acknowledges splits both in South Africa's social fabric and in Simon's personal life (the title track is a clear descendant of the earlier "Hearts and Bones," a song about the singer-songwriter's brief marriage to Carrie Fisher). Humor is hardly absent from the mix, though; witness the addled "I Know What I Know" and the fable-like "You Can Call Me Al." --Rickey Wright

Shining like a national guitar!.......2007-07-21
Graceland is probably Paul Simon's last largely received work amid a truly prolific, terrific musical career. Although his most recent album "Surprise" is deservedly garnering much attention, "Graceland" will remain timeless forever. Its difficult to say difinitively which is Paul Simon's best solo album, afterall there are so many great ones. I am partial to "Hearts and Bones" and "You're the One" myself. Its like trying to pick the top five most magnificent crown jewels from the Tower of London! But this one must find it's way to a comfortable spot in anyone's top 5 of Simon.
Opening with "The Boy In the Bubble", I must confess not one of my favorite tracks, however a good song and universally well liked; it begins with a drumming of accordion unusual for Simon but well used throughout Graceland. This, morphed with a core beat that can't help but remind one of something strangely disco create a sound that, at the time, must have been cutting edge for Paul. Its unusual to me, but it works. Following is the title track, perhapse the best one in Simon's illustrious career, "Graceland". This is a fine song and if you haven't heard it in it's entirety, you should. These sample tracks are good, but you can only descern so much from them. "Graceland" deserves for everyone to hear it once, afterall when you mention Paul Simon to someone they will ultimitely say something like "Oh yeah, Graceland right?" His last, best song. "I Know What I Know" is humorous, entertaining Simon's more comical side as we all know he has one. Great fun, and slightly African sounding. "Gumboots" is perhapse even more fun, one of my favorites here. The lyrics, the reappearing, wheezing accordion in the background. It's just one of those fun songs. In the next track Simon puts on a slightly straighter face for "Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes". It openes slow and vocal, just Simon and the appearing Zulu singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo with which he collaborated in this album for the slight African feel. A really cool song, and if you're lucky enough to purchase this album version with extra tracks, the demo with dominant base guitar is better. Many people will say that "You Can Call Me Al" is a 'weird' song. Maybe so, but you have to agree that it's also good. Like so many of these songs it is once again fun. "Under African Skies" and "Homeless" are the two predominately African style songs, both calm and enjoyable. "Homeless" is particularly good where we get the best view of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. "Crazy Love vol. 2" is graceful with it's guitar chords, and lyrics are as good as usual. "That Was Your Mother" skims the surface of cajun zydago influences of Simon and his version is also quite good, the same with "All Around the World".
And that's it save for the bonus songs, which are all demos and all enjoyable. This album piloted the group of foreign sounding musical themes that ensued, followed by "The Rhythm of the Saints" (South American), and "Songs From The Capeman" (Puerto Rican). I recommend checking them both out if you like Graceland. With a great artist like Paul Simon, you aren't bound to come across too many rotten apples!
Enjoy.
Has there ever been a finer album?.......2007-07-17
Paul Simon peaked with this masterwork. He will never return to this form.
"Graceland" is without equal. "Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes" is an idiosyncratic tour-de-force. "You Can Call Me Al" -- well, you already know that one.
If I had to rate all the CDs in my collection, this would be in the top three or four. It's so far beyond Simon's prior works, and so much better than today's dreck, it's difficult to explain.
How do you make a good CD better?.......2007-07-12
Just let Paul Simon remaster it and add a few new redone tracks just for kicks! This is, perhaps, one of the top 100 greatest CDs of all time. Many times when artists(or "record companies") go back and "re-issue" good albums, they make them worse. Most times it's better to leave well enough alone. This is the exception. The remastering brings forward all the great and varied sounds of this album and the extra tracks are just a treat! Highly recommended!
Paul Simon and the world make beautiful music together............2007-06-08
GRACELAND was such a great concept, and it made an even better album! I am so glad that Paul Simon pursued the beautiful idea to meld his songwriting abilities, vocals and distinctive sound with the sounds of other great musicians like Lady Smith Black Mambaza (from South Africa) and Los Lobos (a Mexican-American band, melding Mexican flavor with soul/rock and roll). It sounds terrific.
All of the songs are beautiful for different reasons, but I will give you a few good reasons to skip around on your copy of the CD. "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" (featuring LadySmith Black Mambaza) is a cross between calypso, rock and South African high life, "You Can Call Me Al" is straight up, one of the most enjoyable bits of storytelling and Caribbean flavored tunes I have ever heard, "Homeless" has a killer introduction by Lady Smith, once again, and "All Around The World" warmly adds Los Lobos into the mix, for a great album closer. The only sad note is that the music is over way too soon.

I've read most of the reviews and while I'm delighted this album is almost universally rated at (or above) 5 stars, I'm disappointed to read "one of the best," "possibly one of the best," "best album of the '80s," etc. in the descriptions. C'mon folks. How can you hedge your accolades that way for this disc? Somewhere there must be an album that is "THE best" with no wiggle room. Can't you commit to that? I can. Graceland is THE BEST. Period. (Just so you know, Sgt. Pepper is #2)
I love the reviewer who tells you to listen to the record and if you don't like it get someone to slap you. That's it. That encapsulates how good this album is. Or the two or three who call it their "desert island" CD. That says it all. And I am absolutely of the same opinion as those who proclaim, "there are no bad cuts--listen to it from beginning to end." I said that about this album 20 years ago and after listening to it again last night (all the way through) can confirm the truth of that statement.
I just watched the PBS special of Paul Simon's Gershwin Award. Of his entire body of work that was being celebrated, guess which album was best represented? By an incredible margin. They performed almost every song. That tells you all you need to know.
Get this album. Steal it, if you have to. I only ask that you play it once. I'll never have to ask you again.
A masterpiece.......2007-04-28
So much has been put into this album -- so much thought, melodies, harmonies and rhythms, instrumentation, fusion of different cultures, creativity, lyrics, ideas, atmosphere, complex and rich overlay of sounds. I marvel at the fact that someone could create this album.
Twenty stars.......2007-01-17
Anyone who rates this album less than five stars should be slapped right in the face. I don't care what kind of music you listen to - rock, pop, polka, whatever - you will love this album. If you don't, have someone slap you in the face.
World Music Perfected.......2006-12-24
Paul Simon's "Graceland" was stored away for awhile in my big book of CD's, but I pulled it out recently and added it to the smaller book of favorites in my car. More than halfway thru a trip from Louisiana to Tennessee, we listened to it, and I rediscovered what a perfect record it is. From the attention-grabbing opening accordion chords of "Boy in the Bubble" to the enigmatic closer "The Myth of Fingerprints" Simon fuses American (pop, rock, country and zydeco) with the music of Africa (particularly South Africa) to create an unmatched listening experience. The title track makes you think about the nature of love; "I Know What I Know" and "Gumboots" merge South African music and rhythms with American lyrics; "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" again takes an African beat, but the story could take place anywhere; "Homeless" and "Under African Skies" move the whole scene to Africa. I don't know instruments well enough to list the seemingly countless assortment that Simon included. This review doesn't do justice to "Graceland", a great CD.
Favorite Album of All Time.......2006-07-06
Not only does the music captivate you but the truth behind every song helps add an extra spark. Many have said that this album is the greatest of all time, if such a thing could be determined then I would certainly cast my vote for this record.
I am not the biggest Paul Simon fan, but this albums ability to reflect unbelievable talent and importance puts the album among the greats. Simon acts as a catylst for an extrememly important message and some of the most interesting and talented music I've ever experienced.
If you haven't heard this album yet, then I suggest you get yourself a copy and go into it with an open mind. The album has the ability to grow on a person.

It's fitting that a movie about gun-wielding Elvis impersonators should boast an original soundtrack that's so criminally unoriginal. 3000 Miles to Graceland opens unpromisingly enough with the watered-down, depoliticized Rage Against the Machine-isms of (hed) Planet Earth's "Killing Time," before moving on to the post-Nine Inch Nails butt-rock of Filter's "It's Gonna Kill Me" and Nothingface's "Bleeder." As for electronica, the Crystal Method's 1997 "Vapor Trail" bests BT's more recent "Smartbomb," while Hardknox deserves credit for its blatant recycling of Fatboy Slim tricks on "Come in Hard." The result is an album so generic that reasonably inspired tracks like A3's "Mansion on the Hill," and Hednoize's "Loaded Gun" feel as out of place as Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the King himself. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
The Soundtrack is not as good as the movie........2007-01-24
I bought this item for my son. He and I both enjoy the movie. He is satisfied with sound track. I guess I expected more Elvis in the sound track selections.
Grab-bag with select highlights.......2003-05-11
If you saw the movie `3000 Miles To Graceland' then you know what kind of music to expect from its soundtrack. However, if you didn't see the movie, you'll be wondering what bands like [Hed]P.E. and Nothingface are doing on the same album with Elvis. And there's really no answer to that; other than that they were trying to boost the album's appeal. Most of the songs are featured on the band's full-length CDs and therefore only become enjoyable if you haven't heard them yet (i.e. Spineshank, [Hed]P.E., Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Crystal Method, etc.). The real gem on this soundtrack is the Elvis Presley classic "Such A Night", which you can now call a `classic' thanks to its appearance here. "Such A Night" really should've been the movie's theme, in place of the lackluster "Franklin's Requiem" (George Clinton). And since it's not featured on ELV1S 30 #1 Hits, this CD becomes a must-own for the diehard Elvis fan.
Of the 14 tracks, we could've done without about four: "Smartbomb" (BT), "Come In Hard" (Hardknox), "Loaded Gun" (Hednoize), and the aforementioned theme song. All those songs are nothing compared to The Crystal Method's "Vapor Trail", which is the only techno song you can call good. But since they were featured in the movie I guess you're forced to include them. Hah. The few great songs are "Killing Time" by [Hed]P.E., "In 2 Deep" by Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the epic "Such A Night". But as I said before, the fact that they are featured on the artist's earlier albums make them only great to the uninitiated. The one track that really jumped out at me is Bender's awesome "Angel Dust"; which fit in very nicely with `the van scene' (as I like to call it). That song might've actually spawned my liking of them. Sadly, on another down note, Uncle Kracker's "Who's Your Uncle?" is an edited version of the song; which is kind of odd considering that "Killing Time" isn't. And also, Uncle Kracker's smash hit "Follow Me" was featured in the movie and is NOT on the soundtrack. Go figure?...
The music on this soundtrack is either nu-metal, techno, blues, or classical; in the case of Elvis. There is great diversity from song to song and I think that allows for a better-than-average soundtrack. But still, there are a few aspects that keep it from being perfect. As I said, "Follow Me" wasn't included here when it was in the movie; and the same goes for the Elvis tracks "My Way" and "Trouble". It's hard to believe they didn't include Elvis songs when the movie was loosely based on The King himself. And, again, as I said, Uncle Kracker's track is edited; which in turn makes it unmemorable and annoying to listen to. Without those inaccuracies, this soundtrack would've been awesome. Even so, I highly recommend it if you saw and enjoyed the movie. And even if you haven't seen `3000 Miles To Graceland' yet, the soundtrack is still beneficial and worth frequent listens. So if you enjoy nu-metal, techno, blues and Elvis--and can handle them all at once--then certainly buy this album.
A soundtrack that is doing better than the movie?.......2003-01-01
I got this soundtrack as a Christmas present and this is one of the cds I wanted because of Such A Night by Elvis Presley was on the cd, and if the soundtrack didn't have the song on it, then I would not have wanted this cd. At looking at the 8 presious reviews, everbody that listened to this cd, liked it. But a whole lot of people didn't like the movie. The cd has two soundtracks, first is Vapor Trail and the 2nd is Franklin's Requiem. The soundtrack has various singers like (Hed) Planted Earth, Filter, Elvis Presley, Bender, Uncle Kracker, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Here is the tracks
1 Killing Time
2 It's Gonna Kill Me
3 Bleeder
4 Mansion on the Hill
5 Smartbomb
6 In 2 Deep
7 Who's Your Uncle
8 Come in Hard
9 New Disease
10 Angel Dust
11 Vapor Trail
12 Loaded Gun
13 Franklin's Requiem
14 Such a Night
I'm sure you pretty much know what the movie is about. If you don't know who the two guys are that are on the cover, they are Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner. But if you are a big Elvis Presley fan and want a soundtrack that has more Elvis Presley songs on it, I will reccomend to you Lilo & Stitch. This soundtrack is the soundtrack of one of the viloent movies that came out last year. This is one of the soundtracks to buy and please watch the movie if you have not seen it yet. It is kind of hard to believe that this soundtrack is doing better than the movie. And getting better reviews too.
Praiseland for Graceland.......2002-12-06
This soundtrack is one of the best yet. Extremely good mix of music that correlate nicely with the contents of the film. The song that really makes the soundtrack incredibly, however, has got to be the song "bleeder" by nothingface. This is a band that, in my opinion, should be getting a lot more recognition than they have in the past. It's nice to see them finally get at least some recognition.
One of my favorite albums!.......2002-03-06
This soundtrack is very much like the movie itself: loud, mindless, and alot of fun. My personal favorites: the head-banging intensity of "Killing Time," "It's Gonna Kill Me," and "New Disease," as well as the blatantly Fatboy Slim-ish techno tune "Come In Hard," one of the best recent songs of its kind. And the album ends in high style with "Such A Night" by The King himself, which will bring a smile to the face of anyone who has seen the movie's great end titles sequence. All in all, a real guilty pleasure of a CD.

Customer Reviews:
HE TOUCHED ME.......2006-10-02
I absolutely love this album. I'm not particularly fond of Elvis' music but there is something about the emotion and love he obviously puts into these songs that's tangible and touching. I highly recommend this album to his fans and those that aren't fans but may need a spirtual lift and a blessing.
The Gospel Music of Elvis.......2006-06-19
The deep faith that Elvis had spills over into all his music, but these songs can inspire and uplift one even in darkest moments. I use them in my meditation. The two discs are basically an anthology of all the gospel he sang over the years. Disc two has some of the most touching music and powerful therapy you will find anywhere. I play it for my mother who has Alzheimer's. It motivates and yet calms her.

Essential Elvis Gospel.......2005-05-13
This is truly a superior Elvis Gospel Anthology. Everything you could want is here on two discs. But what sets it apart is on Disc 2. Tracks 5-9 are recordings of Elvis around the piano with, probably, the Stamps, casually singing gospel as he was so fond of doing after shows late into the wee hours of the morning. It is breathtaking. For true Elvis fans, or fans of great Southern Gospel, this is a must have for your collection.

Masterpiece.......2007-07-22
This seamless blend of African pop and American folk styles is one of the most exquisite musical achievements of the 20th century. The melodies are divine, the vocals inspired, and each and every one of the compositions is a masterpiece. There is sadness and joy in the music, but above all it is a celebration of life.
The best loved songs include The Boy In The Bubble, Graceland, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes and Under African Skies, but the rest hold great charm too. The most rootsy African sounds surface on I Know What I Know with the robust and soulful vocal infusions of The Gaza Sisters.
Paul Simon has always successfully integrated exotic sounds in his music to create great beauty: Andean flutes on El Condor Pasa, Caribbean rhythms on Me And Julio Down By The School Yard and Mother & Child Reunion, and Latin/South American sounds on The Rhythm of the Saints, but Graceland is his towering achievement as a solo artist, a truly exceptional album with a power and beauty that transcends all musical boundaries.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Album, Great Sound Quality, Great Songwriting!.......2007-06-09
A lot of people have expressed surprise at this great Paul Simon album but I'm not sure why. One of the reasons given by Paul as to why he broke up one of the more successful vocal duos ever was his intention to pursue a different musical direction, one that involved his great love for rhythm, and we get large doses of that on this album which incorporates not only African rhythmic styles but also Cajun folk rhythms.
We get complex time signatures and constantly changing rhythms not only in the music but also in the acapella vocal stylings of "Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes" which is full of syncopated rhythms. Fans of Paul are very familiar with his love for rhythm from earlier great tracks like the Grammy winning "Late in the Evening" which would have fit in well in this album as well.
This version is also special as it comes in a mini-lp replica sleeve design packaging that very faithfully imitates the original lp design down to the lyrics on the inner sleeve which holds the cd and the sound quality has been remastered very, very well for a great sound. The bonus tracks are an excellent plus as well, the demo version of "Homeless" the standout of the 3. You also get all the lyrics included in both English and Japanese. This is probably the best version of this album that is currently out there and is a must for all fans of great rhythmic music.
Very highly recommended.
