It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La Gorce

Multiplatinum selling, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed Seal unveils his first greatest hits collection with Seal Best 1991-2004. But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). 5 out of 5 stars I love this music!.......2007-07-20

I'm usually buy only R&B, but I decided to try a different type of an artist. I love listening to Seal! His style is cool, unique and very sexy. Definately a Seal fan!

5 out of 5 stars I love love love this guy! .......2007-03-16

This album is one I can play over and over and not get tired of. His music is fun, inspirational, romantic and just beautiful. Highly recommended for those who just want to relax and comtemplate things with a nice sound in background, or turned up loud, it makes you smile and want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Seal it with a Kiss.......2007-03-11

Nobody does it better. All of Seal's greatest hits in ONE CD. Does it get any better than that?

4 out of 5 stars "Greatest Hits" album could have been "greater".......2007-03-08

I would consider myself among the top 31 (arbitrary number, of course) Seal fans in the known world, and this greatest hits album is dynamic because it's Seal, but could have been better with a few missing songs. "Newborn Friend" is a lesser known hit to those who may not be as well-versed in Seal, and it definitely should have been included. It's one of his finest works and a far cry from "Kiss from a Rose" or "Crazy", his two most well-known hits. Also, a track or two extra from "Human Beings" would have been nice. I'm not sure why Seal seems hell bent on ignoring this album, which I still prefer over Seal IV, for some reason. He doesn't even seem to perform off of it much in concert. I could have done without "Lips Like Sugar", too. It just seems like filler. For what it's worth, though, the acoustic album that comes with the special edition of the greatest hits disc is stellar and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now how about Seal V?

5 out of 5 stars essential seal.......2007-02-06

if you like Seal, this is a great compilation to add to your collection. always relaxing yet refreshing, I listen to this CD along with music by Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel for a nice afternoon of relaxation with my MMOs or RPGs like Sims2.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2007-06-08

This 2-disc CD from Seal is wonderful. I love having the choice between orchestrated and acoustic selections. I didn't know too much about Seal until I heard his Kiss From a Rose song. I was hooked. I bought the CD and suprise, I recognized every song on it! I just never knew who performed them until I bought the CD. If you're a Seal fan, you need this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good inspirational listening.......2007-03-08

If you like Seal's music, this is a definite "must have." I purchased it, because I didn't want all of his individual albums, yet wanted to be able to listen to his greatest hits and follow along. It's one of those CDs you pop in the car when you've had a stressful day, and after listening to a few songs, you are reenergized, revitalized, and uplifted.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Collection.......2006-02-23

This is a great collection of his greatest hits. I have found that I enjoy listening to this album all the time. I hope you enjoy it like I do.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2005-09-10

Best of albums are almost always a way for a record company to earn some quick bucks because the cost of producing them is practically nothing. In this case Warner Brothers adds a 2nd disk with new material, but for the price of a 2nd albumn. If you're a Seal fan you already have most of disk 1 so you'e paying a steep premium for everything else. That said, the 2nd disk is what is most disappointing. Yes, it's new versions of some great Seal songs and if you're a Seal fan you'll want them, but after comparing it to the truly accoustic Seal: The Accoustic Session, these versions seem barely "accoustic" at all. As has been the problem with some of Seal's later work, overproduction buries his talent in blanket of technically well-done, but marginally meaningful sound. What made Seal popular and famous is the passion and emotion of his voice. That should be front and center in an "accoustic" album. For whatever reasons Trevor Horn keeps complicating what should be simple and powerful.
At least get the version with the DVD audio. As I said, this release is technically well done and that's the best way to appreciate it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-08-21

If you're into Seal, I'd recommend this collection to ya'. It's well rounded and an easy listen.

5 out of 5 stars Remarquable audio quality in 5.1.......2007-05-07

I have recently upgraded my hifi system with high end (expensive) audio components (speakers, amp, pre-amp, ...) and I am looking for the best recording available is DTS or Digital 5.1.
This Seal CD is remarkable in quality. One of the best sounding 5.1 recordings along with the latest Eagles.

5 out of 5 stars There's nothing like Seal.......2007-01-15

This is a great collection to hight all the high points of his career. I still recommend some of the albums, because each collection is a work unto itself. However, if you are looking to get the core essentials, this compilation will work perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD-Audio !!.......2007-01-02

I bought this package to try out the DVD-Audio version in our Acura ELS Surround Sound System and it was AMAZING. I was skeptical of the car dealer hype, but the sound quality was unbelievable compared to the CD version. The DVD-Audio version is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent voice!.......2006-11-10

This guy can sing. I enjoyed all the songs of his that have been on the radio but the ones that weren't were kind of boring. The DVD that came with this package isn't worth the extra bucks plus they didn't include the "Kiss From a Rose" video.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it !!.......2005-08-25

This is an incredible CD. I have never heard "Walk on by" in a better mix. Seal is at his best. It is cool how these songs can be rediscovered and gets to be so enjoyable. If you like Seal, you will certainly appreciate this CD. I have particularly liked "Touch" and "Colour". The acoustic versions are awesome

4 out of 5 stars Best kept.......2004-12-10

Lamb is an outstanding trip-hop band. Come on, admit it -- their music is beautiful, polished and textured, and it's a sign of the world's unfairness that people like Celine Dion outsell them. But I digress. "Best of Lamb 1996-2004: Best Kept Secrets" is a surprisingly good look back on the history of... well, one of electronica's best kept secrets.

A lot of "Best Of" albums stagger under the weight of personal preference -- meaning that the fans keep asking "Where is...? What happened to...? How could they not include...?" I didn't feel that way when listening to these sixteen chronological songs. While most Lamb songs are beautiful, these songs do a good job of showing their evolution from rough trip-hop to smooth, almost jazzy electronica.

The self-titled debut was a mix of the epic and rock-y -- "Cotton Wool" and "God Bless" are superb percussion-pop song with some trip-hop edge. "Best of Lamb" starts off dark, but gets... not exactly light, but more upbeat and less sprawling. One exceptional example is "Bonfire," a passionate, sweeping song that perfectly showcases Louise Rhodes' beautiful vocals.

Their style changed even more later on, moving further from their debut and into the realm of purer trip-hop -- less orchestral, less rock-y. "Gabriel" is a pretty song, and "Angelica" a gentle trip-hop-piano melody. They took that sound even further, and it's reflected in the finale of this album -- the trippy "Stronger" and the airy "Wonder."

It's definitely a good place to investigate if you're a Lamb virgin. If you have all four albums, however, it won't yield much that's new to you. But it's also a pleasant capsule look at their evolution as a band -- they started off sprawling and dark, and have (so far) become much jazzier and airier. Some of the song choices are a little obvious -- "Gabriel," for example, which apparently is a hit among romantics.

Lamb will probably never break into the No. 1 slot -- although stranger things have happened -- but their songs remain rich and beautiful, no matter which album you listen to. And as an introduction, either to the band or to albums you don't have, this is a pretty good one.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secrets indeed..........2004-06-19

I listened to Lamb for the first time a long time ago (1998-9), for the first and only time I saw their "B-Side" video on MTV. Back then it was one of the coolest things for me, the video and the song. Unfortunately this type of music isn't very popular in Mexico when groups like Portishead, Massive attack and Tricky are practically unnoticed. Since I'm a big fan of their music, I actually own all of the other CDs, but I couldn't resist on buying this one to get the DVD with their videos... Money well-spent

5 out of 5 stars Best trip hop jazz fuision folk groups around!!.......2004-06-16

I discovered lamb about four years ago, what a suprise a strange fuision of jazz, folk, eletronic and triphop.Great vocals with tons of emotion If you like Billie Holiday, erikha badu, portishead, triky and etc,you will find lamb to be a journey of soul that in it's self is orginal. One of the best groups this decade,Very Under Rated!!!

1 out of 5 stars Save your dough, buy something, anything else..........2004-06-15

This group has been overrated by many, and I've been conned. The only great song is Gabriel and the video Sweet is cute, and the rest ranges from mediocre to hit-the-skip-button. This is after 8 listens trying to like them. Do try Mandalay's Solace instead.

3 out of 5 stars Chill, as usual..........2005-09-14

This installment (or should I say 'reinstallment'?) in the "Cafe" series, is, unfortunately, somewhat of a disappointment (but only because I've come to expect great things from the line of "Cafe del Mar").

This selection of tracks is supposed to highlight the various alblums that preceded it, taking the best from each. Unfortunately, the end result sounds somewhat staggered and even random.

One of the best things about a "Cafe" alblum is its seamlessness from one track to the next. If you want to sit down and really feel the vibe of the DJ, it's best to give more than a single track's worth of your attention, and the continuity of the normal (as opposed to "Best of") alblum, facilitates this experience. This is why I think the lounge/electronica CD is definitely most presentable and effective if listened to in its entirety , and not parceled-out via individual songs to "Best of" alblums.

Of course, almost all of these tracks are found on the previous "Cafe" series ablums, and some of them are real gems ("Uischi's Groove" is awesome, and listenable as a single). But if you really want an introduction to "Cafe," and especially a deeper appreciation for it, I would recommend one of the regular series alblums (5 and 6 are my favorites).

2 out of 5 stars Far Cry from Perfection of Earlier Albums.......2004-12-08

This new "best of" is more like "made for the masses." In recent years, Cafe del Mar has lost the mediterranean veranda with a touch of Spanish sophistication and funky break beat feel. It's more like wanna be 40 year old dinner music, or cheesy "get you in bed" tunes that would make a classy bird run for dear life. One of the tracks takes you back to braveheart and bagpipes, come on! There are a couple of good tracks, but I'd grab one of their earlier albums instead.
