To listen to Ray Wylie Hubbard's Snake Farm is to enter an eerie netherworld populated by dark and fascinating characters, some of whom are creepy enough to give you the shivers. The sandpaper-voiced Hubbard, a Texas songwriting legend, works a primal, greasy groove with these bluesy portraits, starting with Ramona, the dancing, tattooed reptile-house worker of the unforgettable title track. "Snake Farm" hypnotically mixes slithering images of sex, fear, revulsion, and humor, especially when Hubbard lets out a shimmering and menacing shudder of disgust. ("Snake farm / It just sounds nasty / Snake farm / Purty much is.") Guitar gunslinger Seth James sharpens the fine point on the stiletto that helps make these songs so lethal, but throughout, Hubbard strives for a tone of decadent elegance, whether evoking polecat love or the sideshow thievery of "Rabbit" ("There's two kinds of people in the world / The day people and the night people / It's the night people's job / To get the day people's money"). Produced by the masterful Gurf Morlix, who keeps things lean, foreboding, and roadhouse rough, the album sounds as if it were recorded in a room lit only by a naked 90-watt bulb--the perfect atmosphere in which to conjure songs of sin, deceit, and subterranean shenanigans. By record's end, redemption appears in a gonzo-ized telling of the Christ tale ("Resurrection"). But the Devil holds center stage until then, particularly on "The Way of the Fallen," inspired by Dante's Inferno, and on the Joseph Campbell mythology of "Wild Gods of Mexico," which involves a graphic canine sacrifice. Like Reservoir Dogs, the Quentin Tarantino classic Hubbard references in another humorous--if complex--example of women, sex, and revulsion, Snake Farm is not for the faint of heart. But fans of lowlife chic and exemplary Texas songwriting should lap this up quicker than cold longnecks and hot chicken-fried steak. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Dirty dancing...........2007-06-11

I like this cd, I like the way he sounds, dirty, nasty bad boy! Thats just his music and I like it. I have been listening to Ray Wylie since the 80's and he is still great! Keep em coming!

4 out of 5 stars very enjoyable.......2007-05-13

I really like the sound of this CD and as long as you like the same sound over and over you will like it too.

4 out of 5 stars Can't help but grin when I listen to this.......2007-04-14

We heard the title cut on Tucson's KXCI, and had to get the album. We picked it up from our P.O. box today and put it right in the CD player on our way to exercise, and listened to it as went went about our errands afterwards. It's modern blues, with that little edge to it, and just fun to listen to. If you're into analyzing songs, these can certainly be said to speak to the modern angst and all, like blues are supposed to. The lyrics (which are printed out) are simple, strange, and can, I think, be as Meaningful as you want 'em to be. Hubbard's voice has a sort of limited range, but it's a great voice, distinctive, full of personality and subtle expression, and easy on the ears at the same time it commands attention. It's gonna be years before we even -begin- to tire of this album, and we're already raving about it to our friends.

4 out of 5 stars superb and greasy on the ear........2007-03-12

this is what early zz top would have sounded like had they leaned toward alt-country rather than rock. mr hubbard plays superb electric guitar and is a fine songwriter to boot. down and dirty, gritty and greasy, blues and country and rock & roll. choosen as one of the 50 best albums of 2006 by no depression magazine, i recommend this to swamp-rockers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD of 2007.......2007-03-08

Ray Wylie Hubbard just gets better with age. This album blends his musical styles of the past 30 years into his best work yet. The music and lyrics are both very satisfying and I know I'll play this cd until it disintegrates.

4 out of 5 stars Joe D. Webb.......2007-07-21

Jason and the boys do not disappoint on this CD.They take a step back to the roots of the original outlaw movement. Now this is not a party Cd,but if you like great songwriting skills combined with Jason"s excellent vocals this is must buy.Keep Spreading The Dirt Boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2007-03-01

I have all the Jason Boland albums, and I am a huge fan. He is by far one of my favorites. However the Bourbon Legend, isnt his best work. It doesnt have the feel the rest of the albums have. I was very disappointed and sold it back after a week of owning it. However I would recommend any of the other albums, he is wonderful live!!

5 out of 5 stars Country Music On A Bender!!.......2007-01-10

Jason Boland and the Stragglers are straight bourbon compared to the watered down country coming out of Nashville. They are outlaws and the sound is raw but pure. Reminiscient of the great one, Waylon, these guys consider fiddles and steels to be essential country instruments. Buy this album but then buy all of their albums. You'll love them all.

5 out of 5 stars Real Country Still Lives !.......2007-01-03

If you are a Waylon Jennings fan, then this CD is a must! If you aren't familiar with Jason, you're in for a treat. Jason has a voice made to sing country and it comes through with true emotion in these songs, all of which he wrote. No big rockers here, just real country music with great tunes and lyrics. You won't have to skip through any "filler" songs, they are all good! Get This!

1 out of 5 stars Whoops Jason.......2006-12-19

This album is not worth your time. Every song has the same theme as far as the "music" goes. Bourbon Legend is a great song but this CD does not compare to Live at Billy Bob's Texas. I was very dissapointed after listening to this album once and immediately sold it back to Amazon. He should stay away from the studio and do what he does best. BE IN THE BAR!!!!!!!

About the Artist

Six years of touring and refining his music have left the Texas singer-songwriter at a critical juncture. Bowen's professional and personal life are busier than ever. But he's not about to take his foot off the pedal with long-awaited opportunity finally knocking. "I like my life hectic," Bowen said. "When nothing is going on, that's when I become lazy." Bowen is riding a wave of momentum. He co-wrote the first release on Pat Green's Lucky Ones , "Don't Break My Heart Again." In February, he finished a multi-state barnstorming tour with Randy Rogers that put him in front of record crowds. Bowen acknowledged that his next studio effort, targeted for a late summer release, carries long-term ramifications. He's ready to capitalize. "This has to be the record for me at this point in my career," Bowen said. "A lot of people have turned their heads and are standing back looking at me, which is a cool feeling. But at the same time, I can't mess around from this time on. It's a critical point for people that haven't heard me yet." With that in mind, Bowen has shuttled between Austin and Nashville since last summer to work on the yet untitled release. He has teamed up with J.R. Rodriguez, who produced The Blue Light Live , Bowen's last offering. It's been since 2002's Try Not To Listen that Bowen has been in the studio. After completing that album in two weeks, Bowen is enjoying the laid-back, detail-oriented pace at which he's making this album. "It's been really fun and really relaxing compared to what I've done in the past," Bowen said. "For the first time, my songs are sounding the way I want them to sound." Bowen arrived armed with 22 new songs, 18 of which he wrote or co-wrote, that will be pared down for the record. The album is scheduled to be released independently, but Bowen has been enthused by recent label interest. "If somebody wants to tag along and pick us up, then hell yeah," Bowen said. "That's the advantage a lot of us Texas artists have." Bowen's musical influences stretch from A to Z, from Aerosmith to Zepplin. His music has been described as roots rock, guy rock, alt-country, and Texas music. Bowen said he takes great pride in producing music that can't be pigeon-holed. "People can call it whatever they want," Bowen said. "That might hurt me because people want music that can reach a specified demographic. I don't write music for one demographic. I want to be an artist that can play blues, rock, country and honky-tonk live." Bowen's rise to prominence has been marked by dogged determination. He began playing music as a student at Texas Tech in 1998 where he and friend/band member, Matt Miller, started the band West 84. While his popularity has spread beyond the Texas Panhandle, Bowen has worked to maintain the personable approach that helped build his rabid fan base. "It's gotten more difficult to have that personal base with the people that are coming out to shows," Bowen said. "But I know the faces and those people that keep coming out, I think of them more like friends than fans. I may be crazy, but it's hard for me to believe that I have fans that honestly care enough to listen to my music. It shocks me every day." Manager and longtime friend Chad Kudelka said Bowen's loyalty and approachability has kept fans coming back to fill bigger and bigger venues. "He saw that side of other artists that he didn't appreciate and decided that he wasn't going to get that way," Kudelka, said. "He told me, `If I ever get out of line, slap some sense into me.'" It doesn't appear that will be necessary. Bowen has put in the work and the miles to reach this point. By the end of 2005, he should know just how far he can go.

I have always liked Wade Bowen but this CD is amazing. I can't stop listening to it. I would reccomend it to anyone who likes country music and especially someone who likes Texas Country.

5 out of 5 stars Go BUY this one!!!.......2007-03-07

Being a huge Ragweed fan, I couldn't resist buying this CD. Wade is an incredible singer. If you like good music with heart and soul, you will love this CD. It's got it all: some hard country rock, a little alt. country, some uptempo country and smooth ballads. The title cut is amazing!!! Too bad radio hasn't discovered Wade. He is better than most of the guys making some hit music these days.

5 out of 5 stars Check it out.......2006-07-04

If you like Radney Foster or Randy Rogers you will want to get this, contains some really fine songs. I was very impressed with his song writing.

5 out of 5 stars Wade Does It Again.......2006-03-13

Wade Bowen has certainly gone through lots of changes over the years (first starting out as West 84, then Wade Bowen & West 84, and finally now just Wade Bowen). Bowen is a talented song writer who show more of his softer side with more slower and ballad-like songs. Don't look to find any raw, edgy, or rocking country songs on this album as they just don't fit the mood, still nothing is lost with this album. A must have for all fans of Wade and Texas Music. I can't wait for his next album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2006-03-03

This is a great CD. Those of you not from Texas have probably never heard his music, but you'll definitely want to take a listen to this one. We're lucky enough here to see Wade and several other up and coming artists up close and personal about once a month. If you ever get a chance to see Wade live, you don't want to miss the opportunity. Wade is not about a superstar trying to write songs about being a regular guy. Wade is a regular guy. You'll also want to stick around after the show and meet Wade. You can't find a friendlier person on earth. His songs are down to earth and from the heart. We've bugged him for several years to get this CD out the door, and it was worth the wait. Describing the music is hard to do, you just have to listen. Here in Texas, we call it Texas music (mostly because the bands playing this type of music is from Texas). I only know how to describe it as great music.

As a performer, Bruce Robison isn't nearly as well known as his wife, Kelly Willis (who contributes plenty of duet and background vocals here); his brother, Charlie Robison; or his sister-in-law, Emily Robison of the Dixie Chicks. But top country artists all know him and eagerly await each of the songwriter's albums, because they invariably introduce hit-bound material (the Dixie Chicks, George Strait, and Tim McGraw have all scored big with his songs). The smash-just-waiting-to-happen here is the album's centerpiece, "All Over But the Cryin'," a romantic ballad about hanging on to a relationship that has lost its spark. The bittersweet "Don't Call It Love" also has plenty of commercial possibility, though Robison's strength as a songwriter is that he never sounds like he's writing to formula or with an ear toward radio. His well-crafted material just goes down as easily as the acoustic, folkish arrangements that dominate the album. His gentle melodies and vocal warmth belie the comparative darkness of "Days Gone By" and the regret of "Every Once in Awhile," while the hardcore roadhouse of "You Really Let Yourself Go," evoking the Buck Owens/Dwight Yoakam school, provides a chance of pace. The choice of covers makes this Robison's most varied release to date, as "Tennessee Jed" highlights the back-porch country side of the Grateful Dead, "More and More" (a duet with Wills) channels Webb Pierce, and "Bandera Waltz" toasts Robison's hometown in the Texas hill country. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Too bad he doesn't get more mainstream airtime........2006-08-11

Eleven Stories is a good collection of well written songs and well selected covers. Bruce Robison is a great songwriter and has not faultered on this album. Lots of good musicians helping out too(Keith Gattis, Kelly Willis, etc.)

They lyrics are emotional and touching and the music is great. His songs always find a way to hit home. Unlike some songwriters you always seem to know what Bruce is singing about, even if you don't know. Great music for Sunday drive or and afternoon hanging outside.

4 out of 5 stars Finely crafted songs from terrific Texas tunesmith.......2006-04-26

Robison's career as a songwriter (Dixie Chicks' "Travellin' Soldier," Tim McGraw's "Angry All the Time," etc.) has always overshadowed his own recorded work in commercial circles. This latest collection of eleven tunes (eight of which are originals), played and sung in his typically laid-back manner, isn't likely to reverse that equation. Robison's a pleasing singer, but he doesn't have the head-turning voice of his wife (Kelly Willis, who provides additional vocals here) or the magnetic star-quality of his brother (Charlie), and though his trio of bands (neatly annotated as to which appears on each track) provide strong support, the home-spun productions occasionally sound more like demos than finished mixes.

That said, Robison's fans buy his albums for the songs, and he's certainly delivered another strong set, including well-picked covers of The Grateful Dead ("Tennessee Jed," sporting a Jerry Garcia styled vocal), Webb Pierce ("More and More," as a duet with Willis that is a vocal highlight), and the hometown swing chestnut "Bandera Waltz." Robison's originals are beautifully crafted observations of life, including the dark first-person voice of homelessness, "Days Go By," and the weary end-of-romance "All Over But the Cryin'." The latter is a perfect example of Robison's craft, at home in this indie skin, but itching for a more polished chart-bound Nashville production.

Robison can crank up the Texas honky-tonk, as on the two-stepping "You Really Let Yourself Go," but his heart is clearly that of a folky, with "Every Once in A While" playing warm reminiscences against the cold realities of lost love, "I Never Fly" sung low and intimate, and "Kitchen Blues" turned inward and contemplative. All in all, a compelling set of songs, many of which match Robison's low-key performances, and several of which await more highly produced reinterpretations. [?2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars Yet another stellar album by this masterful singer/songwriter.......2006-04-09

Bruce Robison has a knack. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it exists. Whatever it is, it allows him to tap into raw emotion, brutal honesty--to grab your heart with a lyric and smooth vocals, wrench it out of your chest, give it a lecture on heartbreak, and then put it back safe and sound. A rather gruesome analogy, perhaps, but that's how I feel after I listen to a Bruce Robison album--whether it's one I'm listening to for the first time, such as ELEVEN STORIES, or one I've owned for years.

The songs on this album are, indeed, stories. Stories about love and loss, about moving through life and doing what you have to. His own originals continue the melancholy, this-is-the-way-it-is theme of his previous effort, COUNTRY SUNSHINE, and are just as good as the tunes on that marvelous album. There's the desperate "Days Go By" (don't you dare confuse this with the Keith Urban song; if you do, there is no reason why you should be reading this review, or even purchasing this album), the whimsical "You Really Let Yourself Go," the whistful "Every Once in A While." His choice of covers--"Tennessee Jed," "More and More," and "Bandera Waltz"--come off sounding just as good as his own tunes. The overall effect is yet another masterpiece by one of today's best singer/songwriters. Combining traditional and cutting edge folk with raw, unbridled country music, Robison continues to craft music that skirts the edges of Nashville mainstream, but proves itself just as good--even better, in most instances--than the music of his mainstream peers. If you're not already a fan of Robison's music, ELEVEN STORIES is a fine place to start. If you ARE a fan of his music...then why are you reading this? You already know you're getting a great album. Buy it already!!!

Album Description

Limited Edition two CD pressing of the 2007 debut album from this duo of DJs and producers, formerly one-half of the indie band Simian, featuring a bonus CD that includes six additional tracks including remixes and dub versions. James Ford and James Shaw started playing Electronic music together before Simian formed and began DJing clubs during in between Simian's touring commitments, eventually combining these two loves and creating their own project. They didn't want their songs to sound too techy and programmed, so they recorded them all on analogue machines, and kept the mistakes. They called up their old Simian mucker Simon Lord and asked him to sing the swirly, Psych-Folk vocal on 'I Believe', just to prove there were no hard feelings. They roped in Barry Dobbin from sadly-missed jerk-popsters Clor to add his unique vocal hooks to the cinematic space disco of 'Love'. They enlisted exuberant Go! Team frontwoman Ninja to splatter her sassy hip-house rhymes all over irresistible opener 'It's The Beat'. They decided to name the album Attack Decay Sustain Release because it sounded like a good motto to live by. 10 tracks. Wichita.Includes a bonus CD with six additional tracks.

4 out of 5 stars CAN'T STOP THE BEAT! but you can probably save..........2007-07-12

Well i really do love this album from SMD, it is overpriced for the trouble of buying the album. Though that's how it goes for most imported goods. But get past that and you have one of the most influencial beat albums of the year! I love this album very much, a nice cool dance beat sound with a heavy hit on some tracks. Though check out the vids for IT'S THE BEAT, and HUSTLER! THose are key tracks for most of the album, but a very good one at that. thIS IS curRently THE best album to come from the UK to date. PLus don't fret they have a US ep coming out, and maybe the album will port stateside soon so don't leave this just yet... YOU GET IT? YOU GOT IT? YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD GET THIS!!!

-quoted from song IT'S THE BEAT "except last word on YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD..."

3 out of 5 stars Waaaaaaay Overpriced!!! :(.......2007-06-26

Me being a huge fan of "Hustler" by SMD was totally excited to see they were putting out a full album. Needless to say, I was a little let down. My main gripe is the length of the CD. The main album clocks in at only 36:57, with the longest track at just 4:59, & the majority are only around 3 1/2 minutes long. What makes it worse is this supposed bonus disc is again just under 40 minutes. This one only has 6 tracks with remix's & a couple full versions. Why weren't these both just put on one disc? My other issue is on the 1st CD there are only 10 tracks to begin with 3 of those 10 are complete throw away filler tracks the worst offender of these would be the last track "Scott". Ya know, if you're gonna make an album close to 80 minutes & you need to throw something in to fill some empty space, fine, but when your CD is only 20 minutes long to begin with, can we do with out the filler stuff? I don't know, I like alot of the music on the album, it's just probably not gonna get alot of repeat play out of me because it's so short:(. I don't wanna keep hitting play every 30 minutes, or have to stop & put something else in. SMD would've been better off releasing a extended CD single with the 6 great tracks on the CD. I hate to say if I had to do it again, I would skip this release & just DL the good tracks, this was not money well spent:(. If you can find it cheap check it out, otherwise I would suggest passing on this release.

5 out of 5 stars Great Texas Country.......2007-06-18

I think it's funny this has no reviews. I don't even really like country but this cd is the exception. I guess this isn't mainstream Country but this is by far the best country cd I have ever heard. Bear, Bait, and Ammo says it all. Just listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars ALL OUT FUN!!!.......2007-07-12

Simian Mobile Disco have made a hit with album. listening to the tracks on this album is an enjoyable experience. Seeing this all live or hearing it in a dance club is even better.

This album is well done and has plenty of delightful dance tracks that many people can enjoy if they are fans of the sounds of Electroclash, Nu-Rave, Minimalist Techno,Synth Dominated, and even glitch heavy over driven wet bass heavy techno. This album has the potential to still be around for a decade (at least I hope to be right in that hope).
