Book Description
"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite spaceand digging into the heart's deepest wellto touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtansinging the many names of God and Goddessan essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
"A Joyful Noise".......2007-05-16
When I heard an interview on NPR with this artist,Jai Uttal, and music from his CD I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is "a joyful noise" that lifts the spirit and energizes. His very personal explanation of Kirtan on Track 2 gives one an understanding of the spiritual basis of the music and even if it is not a path that you might follow you can't help but be swept up in the chanting. I play it in the car on days when I feel stressed and it removes all that chatter in my head and helps me arrive at my destination uplifted and in the present. His interpretation of the ancient chants using non traditional instruments and renditions is appealing and engaging. P.S.It is a 2 disc set so you can have one at home and one in the car!
Not As Ecstatic As I Like To Be.......2007-04-22
Although a double CD set, both disks pose a problem to this reviewer's taste. Each contains a rather lengthy exposition by the artist on the nature of Bhakti (Devotional) Yoga sandwiched in the program. Jai Uttal has a very pleasant speaking voice & the material was helpful, even inspiring--but do you really want to hear it all over again everytime you play either discs? I know I don't. The musical material is engaging, but not particularly special. It is authentic mantra, but without the technical brilliance of many such CDs (see links below). I don't regret buying it--again, BUT it won't become a treasured favorite. I don't think it would turn-on people who weren't mantra fanatics like me or a real fan of the artist--or a devotee of Kirtan.
PS. The cover artwork is great!

Devotional music at its sweetest.......2007-03-15
This 2-CD set is one of the best introductions to contemporary kirtan I've come across (and I own many kirtan CDs). Aside from the wonderful spoken section, where Jai Uttal chats informally about what kirtan is, the selection of songs is truly heartwarming. I love both CDs, but find I listen over and over again particularly to the second one for its variety of moods and styles. Jai's voice really cuts deep and brings out the intensity and authenticity of his own devotion to the path of music and the heart.
In addition, the musicianship of everyone featured on this set is superb and adds so much to the listening experience. It is hard not to sing along and feel the blessings flow, even if you are not a singer...and that is exactly the point.
Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant by jai Uttal.......2007-03-09
Wonderful kirtan, by a great artist.
How can I express my joy?.......2007-03-06
I was a big fan of Krishna Das and I still am. A couple of weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I heard Jai Uttal's 'Radha Rani ki Jai, Maha Rani ki Jai' - Track # 4 on Disc 2. Like all good music does to my soul, I was so enchanted that I played the same track again and again till I lost count. I wasted no time in getting both the discs and my favorites are as follows:
Disc 1: Track # 3 'Radha Govinda'
Disc 2: Track # 1 'Durga Pahimam', Track # 3 'Jaya Radha', Track # 4 'Radha Rani'
Originally coming from India and being a big proponent of 'Bhakthi Yoga' (Path of devotion and Divine love for God), I can say from the depths of my heart that Jai Uttal sings with such soulful melody and love, it takes my breath away every single time I listen to the tracks mentioned above. It surprises me so much that while I cannot listen to certain types of music even once leave alone repeating my listening experience, the kind of music that Jai Uttal, Krishna Das and others produce, I can listen for a lifetime and experience that joy again and again.

This 1960s classic is a perfect introduction not only to Ravi Shankar's brilliant work on the sitar, but also to classical Indian music in general. Shankar offers brief, informative explanations of Indian ragas, scales, rhythms, song structures, and time signatures to set the stage for each spiritual piece he, Chatur Lal (tabla), and N.C. Mullick (tamboura) perform. Though Western listeners may not be able intellectually to pinpoint the subtle purposes of the various ragas' rhythms and movements, unconsciously listeners will feel them vividly. For instance, the plodding tension created by the 2/3/2/3 rhythm in "Máru-Bihág" well reflects the raga's poetic metaphor of separated, longing lovers. The loose, playful improvisation on "Sindhi-Bhairavi" mirrors the passionate romance of lovers. Overall, classical Indian music is diverse and complex, but The Sounds of India simplifies it beautifully for those interested in exploring it and its greatest ambassador. --Karen Karleski
Customer Reviews:
The Sounds of India.......2007-04-09
I have enjoyed Ravi Shankar since the 70's, when he was "in." In my opinion, he still is. He is a master of the sitar and his explanations of the music was the only thing that I did not care for. I would much preferred that that brief time had been spent in playing more beautiful music. But, I would recommend it to anyone who likes the sitar as I have never heard anyone who has a command of it like Ravi.
Mera Bharat...actually 4.73 stars.......2007-03-24
I owe a lot to this album. I was just seventeen years old in 1993, in southwest Kansas when I bought it. Believe me, southwest Kansas, though I love the land, is devoid of culture outside of farmer/rancher/Mexicano. It was the first foreign music I heard, though I heard the sitar a few times in Beatles music. I bought it on a whim. It was a real daring thing for a Mexican/American in middle America. The minute I heard the first tones, I was hooked, and the rest is history. Shortly after that, I bought Vidwan: Music of South India -- Songs of the Carnatic Tradition. Since then, I have gotten countless Hindustani and Carnatic CD's, as well as music from Nepal. I wrote my senior term paper about Hindustani Music, started learning Hindi, started eating Indian food, began playing the tabla, and as a dream come true, I went to India with my wife in 2005 for two months. I guess you could say I fell in love with India, and it all started with this album. Shows you what music can do.
Onto the review - I love the main intro as well as the intros to each of the ragas. The music is very good, and although the developments of the ragas are short, they adequately express the beauty contained within the ragas. There are, of course, better albums out there, but this is very good intro to the world of Hindustani Music. Buy this and you will be pleased. For a kick, buy it with Vidwan: Music of South India -- Songs of the Carnatic Tradition, so as to get a real feel of both the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. Both of them were released in 1968, both are very classy, and both are available on this site.
Try it out, it'll take you far like it has me...
Diesappointing.......2007-02-06
Too much instrruction on what a raga ia and the different types. I really don't care about that. I just wanterd music.
Much Talking on CD.......2006-08-22
This guy really knows his stuff. It is indeed an introduction to the music with much talking on the CD. I was looking for something more mellow for prayer time. This music is very fast but very good. -Beth, 43, Louisiana
too much talking and not enough music.......2006-07-02
I did not expect a primer on Indian music. I expectd, instead examples of songs in different styles. This CD does do that to a limited extent, but Ravi Shankar spends too much time instructing the audience. The music that is presented seems rough and un rehearsed

Rajasthan, in northwestern India, has a unique mix of cultures that has continually enriched not only its own music, but that of much of Asia and Europe over the centuries. Gypsies, Muslims, and Hindus have all contributed to a potent blend of sounds and influences that have grown into a ceremonial music of rare sensuality. Musafir's members reflect this fusion of religions and cultures and by working together have generated a new energy that is all of the above and none. If you know the various sources, you can identify the complex ragas, the ecstatic qawalli voices, the incessant swirl of the Sufi, and the physicality of Gypsy songs, but they are merged into a new sound in the hands of these musicians, singers, and dancers. The nine tracks include mesmerizing love songs, frantic dance tunes, powerful ensemble and imploring solo vocals, accompanied by harmonium, dholak, sarangi, and a host of other instruments that represent the region's diversity. Musafir are uniquely equipped to translate these many cultures into an important cooperative of sound. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2004-11-28
This is one of the best world music cds I've ever heard. The recording is sharp, the vocals and musicianship is amazing. The sound can't really be described as Indian or Pakistani and manages to cross a very contested border geographically and musically. Highly recommended.
A skillful, sensuous blend of styles.......2002-09-20
Even more stunning than their previous album ("Gypsies Of Rajastan"), this disc delves deeper into more overt "world fusion" territory, but not in the icky way usually associated with that phrase. This is a gorgeous, glorious, earthy and expansively rich, Asian-based exploration of culture, sonic texture and musical spirituality. It's really quite lovely, one of the best albums of its kind. Highly recommended.
Just great music.......2001-04-04
I am not going to reach for any superlatives for this music; they would just come up short. This is just great music, passionate heartfelt. It is of the qawwali/folk tradition of India. But for a folk tradition it matches, nay surpasses the best of any high tradition of India, Europe or wherever. Just get this CD.
Just great music.......2001-04-04
This is a marvellous marvellous CD; the music is so passionate, so heartfelt. I urge you to purchase this CD and let yourself to just hear this stuff. This is music of the qawwali/folk tradition of the India. At this time this the best CD in my collection and my most treasured.
A modern folk masterpiece ... not musty ethnomusicology!.......2000-06-28
I enjoyed Musafir's appearance in Tony Gatlif's brillant 1994 film, "Latcho Drom;" I was blown away by their excellent first album, "Gypsies of Rajasthan;" and catching a stop on their 1999 U.S. tour clinched it: These guys are fantastic!
So it's great to see them back with a new album; and, yes, it's a good one. Musafir's music is an unorthodox mix of Muslim and Hindu musical traditions from the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan, India's vast northwestern state. The result is fresh, exciting and invigorating -- rather than yet another ethnomusical "field recording" of some insular performing caste of the region, this is a messy, organic, totally vibrant 21st century creation that's totally authentic, yet completely new. Musaafir is a breath of fresh air bursting from the bonds of India's oppressive and dangerous communalism. They're a lesson in the possibilities of cooperation rather than mutual hatred and distrust ... and a damn good party band to boot.
"Dhola Maru" (the name of a folk tale that is Rajasthan's answer to "Romeo and Juliet") is a nice follow-up to the band's first CD, "Gypsies of Rajasthan" ... it is immediate (recorded at a home studio in Belgium at all hours of the day and night), passionate (these people are truly in love with what they're doing, and it's apparent in every track), and engaging. As a previous reviewer wrote, it's also demanding -- this is not relaxing background music: It's wild, raucous, loud, and sometimes trascendently estatic.
I give the album four stars rather than five only because I think it tries to do too much in too little space. Musafir's lineup has expanded since the last album (it now includes a classical female vocalist, a transvestite dancer and other oddities that add to the group's already spectacular stage show). But it's too much to showcase on one album, I think.
Having so enjoyed the band's sound on "Gypsies of Rajasthan," I was especially disappointed to see the role of dancer/vocalist Sayeera Sapera significantly reduced due to the excess of new members. Her charming vocals graced much of the first CD, but appear on just a couple of tracks on "Dhola Maru." Sapera is a prodigiously gifted performer -- a breathtaking dancer, a deeply emotive singer; the real star of Musafir in my opinion (then again, I've been hopelessly in love with her since seeing their live show, so my opinion may be biased) -- so I would call her more "back seat" role on this album its only real liability.

intense, dreamy intellectualism.......2004-08-22
Coates is fond of using Baroque analogies to cast her work in technical terms, and in interviews openly confesses her love for Vivaldi and Bach. While there's little doubt of her meticulous attention to formal structures, make no mistake--Coates would be burned as a witch had she produced works like these in the 18th century. Not to be flip, but the discerning eye will note in most portraits of Julian Bream a subtle protest: fingers forming the "devil's 9th" chord, the playing of which was punishable by death during the Inquisition and afterward. This somewhat dissonant chord is clearly visible on the cover of his arrangements of Bach's partitas.
Coates incorporates a vast vocabulary of dissonances into her rarified soundworld--one at odds with much of modernist orthodoxy (which the moderns have long since morphed into) for its sheer emotional heft and technical complexity. She sounds nothing like Vivaldi; for that matter, she sounds nothing like any composer. If one is pressed for comparisons, her music bears passing resemblance to Feldman, and then only in the vaguest terms. The simplistic view would be to call her quartets and symphonies scores for approaching flight paths--what airports sound like on the outside from fixed positions, a soupcon of colliding Doppler fades and crescendos. More directly, though, the listener finds a smoldering core of mournful, ambivalent glissandi that cascade over one in a torrent.
Like most 20th-century iconoclasts, she favors strings over horns, woodwinds and percussion, and the utilization of large banks of violins, violas and cellos in her orchestral work gives it unprecedented scale. This characteristic follows with her chamber music as well, and it must be noted that any ensemble playing Coates must do so with a sense of this multiplicity. This offering is clearly among the best.

Songs of the Soul.......2002-01-21
Shri Anandi Ma, voice of youth and passion, devotion and wisdom. This music conjures exotic images. A colorful procession, flags blowing in the wind. Silhouettes high up along a deep blue skyline, each barefoot step deliberately placed along the holy path. Tala bells and dholak drums keep time. Rhythms which reverberate through the heart, songs of the soul in the ancient language of the divine.
Very Relaxing CD!.......1999-06-13
Buy this cd now! The soothing sounds of this CD will relax your entire body and releave the stress after a long day... even though I don't understand what she is saying.. it sounds "beautiful"!
Goes straight to the heart.......1999-02-10
The beauty of this recording lies in its simplicity and grace. Few recordings communicate such a tender and compassionate space. One's heart expands and more of life enters. The recording quality is great, it just gets out of way and lets the music come forth.
Heavenly Music From a Divine Source!.......1998-10-14
The voice of Shri Anandi Ma can transform and transport the listener... and this excellent recording exhibits that voice perfectly. She has recorded some of these songs before, and beautifully, but the producers at Sounds True apparently have great respect and understanding of what She does with music, and Divine Bliss is one of the finest recordings of ANY kind of music I've ever heard.
Shri Anandi Ma is the spiritual heir of Shri Dhyanyogi, and a master of Kundalini Maha Yoga.

Customer Reviews:
Rez Abbasi records the disc of his life.......2005-06-12
This is one of those serendipitous sessions where everything just seems to go exactly right: right musicians, right sonic palette, right songs, right ethos. Rez Abbasi, who has labored in the world jazz trenches for a decade or so, finally nails it with this release.
Here's a record where all elements come together in a magical sort of way. I'm especially taken by the organ playing of Gary Versace. Often the tendency of an organ player in a setting like this is to try to dominate the proceedings with killer licks and a kind of burning vibe that relegates the rest of the players to the background. Not so here. Versace fully understand his role as one of support and augmentation. Take, for instance, his playing on "Motherland," my favorite cut. He takes a brilliantly conceived solo, sonically subtle, totally within the laid-back world-jazz groove, and just nails it, all the while opening some serious space for the definitive solo of leader Abbasi.
Add Dave Leibman on soprano saxophone casually throwing off huge world-jazz statements, Danny Weiss polyrhythmically deploying his drum kit, and Kiran Ahluwalia dropping major bombs tanpura- and vocal-wise, and you have one of those magical sets that sneaks up on listeners slyly but surely.
Everyone even casually interested in happening world jazz will want to check out this monster session.
