Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Trance.......2006-02-24

Again another great addition from the man who mastered The Miami Trance World....

4 out of 5 stars ATB shines, Acosta falls short.......2005-10-31

CD 1: 5 stars
CD 2: 3 stars
ATB did a flawless job of selecting and putting these tracks together. The shear energy and thumping beats of ATB's set is enough to keep you up till the wee hours of the morning. The tracks build great momentum from one song to the next and it is a solid mix. I have to say though, towards the end, I sensed a loss of steam compared to the ramped up beginning.
George Acosta's CD felt like sand paper to me. It was way too rough and out of control. The beats are too intense and after a while it gets annoying. Not one of his best mixes.
Still ATB's mix is worth the reason to get this set. If you like George Acosta's mix, that's cool too :-)

5 out of 5 stars 140 minutes of transcendental trance..........2005-05-14

let these two discs take you away!...having never heard ATB before,i bought this primarily for Acosta...ATB blew my socks off and Acosta finished the job! i have no idea what anyone could find wrong with this gorgeous compilation...it truly is a journey out of this world. i have lots of trance, van dyk, oakey, lawrence et al...this is up there with the best of 'em. crank it up and let yourself go....

4 out of 5 stars ATB Side Down,Acosta Side Up!.......2005-05-10

Let me say that Ministry of Sound should have NEVER let the king of cheese,ATB be included in a trance compilation! He couldnt be a real dj if he tried.Acosta did a great job with his track selection though. If it were me,I'd have put Armin Van Buuren or Paul Van Dyk on the 1st cd,they rock!Him and George together would have easily made a 5 star cd in my book.Get this but burn the 1st disc, because it's worth nothing but a good coaster or frisbee.

5 out of 5 stars great mix.......2004-08-03

This cd didnt dissapoint me one bit. ATB as uaual did a phenominal job of mixing the songs and he had a great lineup of songs as well. George Acosta played good tracks too, the cd he mixes on this ablum is much better than his "History of Trance." If you are a trance fan then this cd will definitley fit nicley in your collection.

I must say that I love this album. If I don't say it then the glee that has built up in me from listening to it will cause my heart to explode. Buy this. I know its pricey but if you love electronica its a must have. Its deffinitely worth the risk of cardiac explosion.

It's a session, man. The Make-Up flood Dub Narcotic studio with their tightened-up sound. They tell it like it will be, knockin' hard and breathing heavy. Joined sporadically by members of the Dub Narcotic Sound System, they are doing a soul rockin' that has no territorial boundaries. Turn on to the idea of Sound Verite and understand that the struggle of culture vs. Make-Up is the struggle vs. Destiny, the struggle to stop history itself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't Count it Out Yet!.......2005-09-25

When I saw the White Stripes at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, the show was scorching. It may have been my first real rock concert, but what a way to start the journey! The duo seamlessly went from song to song--in the first half hour, I was convinced that they were trying to fit in every song from their repertoire. And then, after blasting through songs from literally every album (and even some non-album tracks), a familiar beat rang through--"Seven Nation Army." I'd completely forgotten about the song until that moment.

For those who complain that "Seven Nation Army" is trite and (or perhaps "because") it's overplayed, don't blame the Stripes--they are as familiar (and frustrated) with that fact as we are. For the other reviewer who said this should be a triple-A-side single, you're absolutely correct, and the White Stripes will NEVER treat "Seven Nation Army" as more or less of a song than any of their other material. Even though it's the pop-fodder that led them to the mainstream, they always treat every song like the make-or-breaker of the concert.

The single is fantastic, of course. "Black Jack Davey" opens with some of Jack's most soulful guitar work, and "Good to Me" is a thoughtful tribute to Brendan Benson (with whom Jack is releasing an album in not too long--The Raconteurs) and just a blisteringly good song. But to get the full effect of the White Stripes, you MUST listen to all their material, and you MUST at some point in your life, see a live show.

5 out of 5 stars what can i say?.......2005-04-22

This is without question the song that made the white stripes a household name. Seven Nation Army, off of their newest album "Elephant", is the 1st song on the album. It just draws in. The only thing better than getting this single would be just getting the album its off.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Nation Army.......2003-08-17

Perhaps 4 and a half stars would be more appropriate, but Seven Nation Army is easily the single of the year. The title song is growing weary with me, but still has great impact on the listener is terms of raw power. The progression is the same throughout the song, so it can be redundant if you overplay it, so use sparingly and you'll have a new favorite. This single could have feasibly been a double-A side ala The Beatles due to the strengths of Good To Me. Similar to songs like Black Math and Broken Bricks, Good To me is very simple with lyrics penned by an old bandmate. It works perfectly with Seven Nation Army. Alas, the best is saved for last, and I must say this single could have been a TRIPLE A-SIDE because of Black Jack Davey. A very Physical-Graffitish song with a hooky riff and an incredible fill, Davey goes into the pile with Death Letter, Jolene, etc. as classic covers. Overall, Seven Nation Army is as close as The Stripes will likely get to single perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Another killer single from the Stripes.......2003-06-09

One of the many great things about the White Stripes is that they have constanly put out great singles to supplement their albums. This one is no exception. Unlike the previous single for "Dead Leaves..", this one has two new songs not just reworking of previous material. "Good for Me" is a Brendan Benson cover and a fun poppy two minute blast. "Black Jack Davey" is the gem on this one. A Zeppish reworking of the British tradional ballad, Jack's guitarwork is scorching, and Meg drops one of her heavier beats on this baby. Of course this is all topped off by the album track "7 Nation Army" which is quickly becoming one of their classics.

5 out of 5 stars SEEK OUT AND FIND THE LIGHT.......2005-10-08

This album is obviously not as good as "I want some", their 1999 release. It should be obtained at all costs by you. And while you're doing that you may get this album and begin to appreciate cool music.

4 out of 5 stars LET'S SPAWN.......2005-05-08

Was recommended this by a friend, and what a wonderful, joyful bundle of fun it is! Never a dull moment, great musicianship and ends off with two killer songs - C'Mon Let's Spawn just begs to be played at full volume and Hey Joe has to surely be, alongside Cake's I Will Survive, the coolest cover version in the world..........ever! David Candy's solo stuff is worth checking out too.

5 out of 5 stars Not soul music, but something else entirely.......2002-04-19

First off, I've read a couple of reviews of this record that have bashed it for not being true soul music. That's true, it's not. It's a combination of the old Nation of Ulysses sound and soul music, and the result is neither punk nor soul. It's the sound of the Make Up, and if you know them you know what I mean. This is my favorite record by Ian and co., and apparently it's their last. Which is a damn shame, since they kept getting better and better.

It's also a damn shame that these guys are grouped into that whole '90s indie movement and listed alongside the other usual suspects the college kids dig: Blonde Redhead, Belle and Sebastian, etc. They're really a killer rock group, with none of the emtional distance or pseudo-everything image the label 'indie' entails. No ringer t-shirts or ironic cover songs here (that version of 'Hey Joe' is played ncie and straight like it should be). Grab this and In Mass Mind and go from there.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2001-12-11

this Cd is pretty good. Not as good as their other Cd's, but very soulful and fun, and intelligent. If you like this album, i suggest you check out maybe Jon Spencer, The Strokes, or The Statue Factor.

5 out of 5 stars The best Make Up album next to "I Want Some".......2001-11-24

This is their last album. It's well produced and the songs are excellent. "I am pentagon" is sooooo cool it aint even possible to describe it. A friend of mine hated all the other Make Up albums, but he actually owns this one. It is more musicianly music? Maybe more psychedelic than any of the others (my friend is a big 13th Floor Elevators fan)too.

I dont know how these guys will hold up historically. They seem very retro in many ways. Not just how the dress and write songs, but even the way they record and produce their records. It's more a true retro replication than a Lenny Kravitz stylized retro chic thang. The gospel element certainly make them all the more bizarre.

5 out of 5 stars First cd = Super Fantastic. Second cd = eh, ok.......2001-08-14

Ministry of Sound's Dance Nation is really a great buy. There are some problems with Disk2 by GT, but Pee Wee's Disc1 all but makes up for 2's shortcomings.

In the booklet that comes with this compilation it says that Pee Wee is Australia's #1 DJ and it shows. Disk1 is a thumping energetic dance mix that is about as hardcore club as you are going to get. You can tell this just by looking at the track listing...about half of the songs are club mixes, and great ones at that. Most of these songs I hadn't heard before, and I wish I had. Great, great tracks that keep the beat moving and every new song seems to out do the last. You'll be moving far into the night with this one. The only problem that I see with this disk is the inclusion of Yves Deruyter's "Back to Earth". It stops right in the middle of the track and just makes bloops for a little while. I have nothing against these kinds of tracks, but this one just breaks up the flow of the disk, since it hits you hard before the track, and then after the track picks up right where it left off. The track doesn't ruin the CD any, but I wish Pee Wee had left it off.

Disc2 mixed by GT is a mixed bag. It starts out disco/house sounding with not so great tracks, and even worse mixing. Between the first three tracks was some of the most obvious fade in/fade out's I've ever heard. You couldn't miss the transitions no matter how hard you tried. After these first few tracks, however, things start to get better, and by Planet Funk's "Chase the Sun" things are grooving, the mixing is a lot better, and we are totally into house territory. The rest of the disk doesn't sound all that fresh or inspired, but it's good enough to put on in the background nonetheless.

Even though Disk2 is less than fantastic I gave this album 5 stars anyway, because Disk1 is just that good. I recommend anyone who interested in this album better buy it. The Aussies have something good going on Down Under!
