All I can Say is WOW.......2004-08-29
This is possibly the best Rockabilly band in years and years. The two albums they have are my two greatest buys. I know rockabilly, neo, traditional whatever, Ive listened for years..this is the real deal. If you are like me, enjoying a wide variety of rockabilly, this is the band you have been hoping to find, from high energy guitar riffs, growling vocals, this is the band. I guarentee this will be in your cd tray for weeks at a time. I cant say enough about Rockin Ryan and the Realgoners, except thank you! Keep rocking!
great late 50's style rock'n'roll and some rockabilly.......2004-08-25
This cd captures Rockin' Ryan's wild and energetic stage presence, even though these are studio recordings. Ryan sings like a rockabilly star from around 1957, but without copying any particular 50's rockabilly icon, and therefore sounding original. This cd is different from his 1st lp, which sounded like mid 50's rockabilly, this cd is late 50's and even early 60's rock'n'roll ,with a few rockabilly and western swingy sounding tracks thrown in for good measure. The highlight of this cd is without a doubt his original "Spiderlegged Baby", where the witty lryics state "I was trying to kiss her lips, I was inbetween her hips... I was trying to kiss her face, I was inbetween her waste." A great cd, and it shows that Ryan is maturing wit hwach new release, here's looking forward to his next cd.

Album Description
Back with a virtually new line-up, yet a musical nod to the past, Sun Caged return with Artemisia, their second album and four years after their self titled debut. Since the debut the band have seen almost wholesale changes in personnel with only guitarist and band founder Marcel Coenen remaining from the debut. Yet the typical Sun Caged sound is still present, if anything even richer with even more different sounds and styles than heard on the debut. The new band members and Coenen have delved deep to deliver an album that acts on creative impulses, without limiting themselves to the standard bag of tricks often heard in the progressive genre. Artemisia delivers an album full of unstoppable vocal melody, virtuoso guitar work, odd time signatures and complex chord sequences all topped off with an ultra powerful production. Lion Music. 2007.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Follow-Up To A Classic Debut.......2007-04-30
Sun Caged is a progressive metal band from the Netherlands, featuring the extraordinary guitar skills of Marcel Coenen. The band's self-titled debut was released on Lion Music in 2003 to much critical acclaim....many felt that it was the single best prog-metal album since Dream Theater's "Images And Words".
After struggling with many lineup changes, necessitating a lengthy space between releases, Sun Caged returns with a solid and polished follow-up to their first disc, which any fan of progressive metal and first-rate musicianship will love.
Full of intricate riffing, lengthy and epic compositions, amazing "dueling" solos and interplay between keyboards and guitar, and powerful vocals in the classic prog-metal style....there is a lot to like (and a lot to digest) in this latest Sun Caged release. I do think, however, that I enjoyed the previous vocalist's style a bit more, and that the production tends to be a bit flat, with the guitars a bit too low in the mix, alongside multi-tracked, oversaturated vocals. That having been said, this is an amazing album, which definately showcases Coenen's amazing skills as a progressive guitarist- my hat is off to him for persevering after setbacks to release such a great album.....
Same guitarist, different band - still great........2007-03-27
Sun Caged's debut album was so amazing that the band found an immediate cult following upon its release. Its strong mix of classic prog metal with sprinkles of fusion a la Liquid Tension Experiment and wild, crushing riffage in the style of Meshuggah and Cynic established them as a very promising band. However, due to various problems, all members except guitarist Marcel Coenen left the band, mostly forming their own projects. So it took quite a while for Coenen to recruit new members, as all previous musicians were simply top-notch and very hard to replace. The search took long, especially finding a good vocalist, but finally, after almost four years, the second Sun Caged album is out.
Artemisia features American vocalist Paul Adrian Villarreal at the helm, and he proves quite different from the previous vocalist Andre Vuurboom. Whereas Vuurboom sang in a more conventional prog metal style on the self-titled debut, he was able to convey all kinds of emotions from fear to rage to desperation easily in a sound not too unlike Ray Alder and James Labrie. Villarreal has a much different approach to singing; he harmonises a lot more with his vocals, always backing himself up during the choruses and even pre-choruses. Also, he uses plenty of wordless vocal harmonies, mostly after drawn-out, mind-bending instrumental passages. That said, he tends to stay in a safe melodic range through most of the album, rarely opting for aggressive, off-the-wall phrasing. That's not to say, however, he isn't capable of these styles, as the brief yet thundering semi-growled vocal part on the instrumental "Engelbert the Inchworm" is more brutal than anything Coenen has ever released. Villarreal's vocals carry a nice warmth to them, which really come through on the more laidback parts and will therefore connect easily with fans of melodic prog metal who also like a good dose of musical dexterity.
Musically, the elements that perfected their debut album are still present, though in a slightly more refined context. This album isn't quite as in-your-face as its predecessor, which I believe stems from the contribution of the new members. Coenen's playing showcases more restraint, but he still does cut loose and grace the pieces with his amazing sweeps and tapping harmonics. On the first song "Lyre's Harmony", a track which does a good job introducing the new guys, Coenen doesn't jump forward until the ending when the piece calls for a guitar solo. It begins with deft keyboards, sparse and well timed drum beats, and some effect-laden vocal bits before crunching rhythm guitars and keys drive the song to its inevitable climax, giving way to sweet solo performances from each member: the bass, the keys, the guitars, and then it's Coenen throwing in a sweet tapping lick whilst Villarreal's vocals are doubled - it's a great ending.
"A Fair Trade" stands out for its catchy main chorus, but this is far from a conventional melodic metal song. The riffage here has Coenen's massive riffing on the debut, backed by sturdy bass, and ethereal keyboards. Rene Kroon has done the impossible by replacing Joost van der Broek, as he is equally competent and does a great contribution to this record. I especially love his vintage keyboard exercises, much like the one on "A Fair Trade" and "Blood Lines" recalling the masters of the 70's. On the former, he is followed by the bass and guitars respectively, but it's again the lead solo at the end that complements the awesome vocal melody. The last couple of seconds of the piece are pure jazz: improvised guitar work is surrounded by a sweet keyboard patch.
The Meshuggah-styled riffery of "Unborn" is pure, unadulterated technical prog and will disprove anyone who thinks Sun Caged has softened up. While this album may not be as heavy as the debut, the heavier parts on this one totally slay. The tight drumming by Roel Van Helden (this guy is amazing!) and intricate bass lines plow through odd-time signatures only to be capped by Kroon's tasty synth dynamics. The soloing on this piece is beyond what the human mind can grasp on first listen, and Villarreal's wordless vocal melodies perfectly solidify this masterpiece. On the ballad "Afraid to Fly", albeit a bit long, and the melodic "Painted Eyes", the vocals are central, even though both tracks do contain nifty instrumentation. "Afraid to Fly" could actually also be on Coenen's previous solo album Colour Journey.
"Diaologue" constantly moves from heavy to slow, and the transition riff in between the sections is a lot like Pain of Salvation circa Entropia. Once again with lots of harmonised vocals, the keyboard solo is another highlight. Also worth mentioning is the sitar playing by Coenen's former Lemur Voice band mate Barend Tromp, lending the stomping track a somewhat eastern vibe, also thanks to the rhythmic percussion.
Like Aghora, another band whose sophomore album took years to see the light of day, Sun Caged are back, though slightly different than before. Fans of melodic prog such as Dali's Dilemma or Threshold during Extinct Instinct should grab this album immediately. The production is amazing, very warm and crisp, and the melodies are certainly going to appeal to many a listener. If you really like the heavier material on this album, you need to check out Freak Neil Inc., the band of former Sun Caged bassist Rob van der Loo, and for darker material there is always Andre Vuurboom's new band Sphere of Souls, both of which are also on Lion Music.

Fantastic music!.......2005-10-17
I highly recommend this CD to all who love folk/acoustic. Jake shows his many talents (not the least of which are great lyrics and colorful tunes)!
Best voice/musician I've seen in a long time.......2004-09-28
I first saw Jake at Club Passim's in Cambridge almost two years ago, and while he was playing with three other established New England singer/songwriters, he blew all their doors off. He combines intelligent lyrics with beautifully intricate melodies and a voice that rivals JT's to create some of my favorite music. The only album I like better than Caged Bird is his new self-titled album in which he further extends his impressive range of talents. Buy this album, you'll be glad you did!
Lovely!.......2004-06-16
Ok, I must confess, I have not heard Caged Bird in its entirety However, from what I have heard, I would recommend this album to anyone. His first album excels as well, and they both are fantastic. The group is wonderful, and what amazes the most about Jake himself is the way that he makes the fiddle sing. This is Good Music.
Jake Armerding is a breath of fresh air.......2003-06-06
It's about time artists like Jake earn some recognition for making REAL music. Too often today music is manufactured and too many artists sacrifice originality to make money. Fortunately for the world, this is where Jake comes in with his folk-y coolness. With his growing fame (and we're hoping that his name and music continue to spread like wildfire), fans have access to some good, solid music with real lyrics. This CD is awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone, it has a wide range of appeal. (add applause here)
Quite possibly next James Taylor.......2002-06-27
BUY THIS ALBUM. I have to agree with the reviewer from MN. Jake may quite possibly be the next James Taylor. However, I have no idea what the reviewer from MN was talking about in regards to the hidden track. Whoever was doing all that screaming (I believe it was some joker by the name of Dan O.) was not talented at all...he sounded loud and obnoxious. I'd hate to live next to that guy. I would probably fine him, if I did.

Although these days Byrd is mostly known for his vast output of sacred choral works, he contributed a considerable number of secular and instrumental pieces to the repertoire, and this disc includes a variety of works in all of these genres. In Byrd's England, musical accomplishment in the form of singing or playing an instrument was an accepted and highly regarded social skill. Naturally, composers filled the need for music to be performed in the homes of amateur musicians, and much of it took the form of songs and instrumental pieces for keyboard or groups of viols. Here, by means of the talents of I Fagiolini--a refreshingly spirited singing ensemble--Concordia consort of viols, and acclaimed harpsichordist Sophie Yateswe enjoy both Byrd's lighter side and a few of his more substantial religious works, arranged in an attractive and enlightening program. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Why aren't more ensembles doing this?.......2006-11-23
The theme of this CD focuses on the recusant nature of Byrd's Latin works - Catholicism being illegal at the time, his music would not have been performed by cathedral choirs as we often hear it today. So it certainly makes sense to perform them one on a part, and who knows, even with female voices on some of the parts. I Fagiolini is as good as any other early music group performing this repertoire, and the quality of the performance is excellent.
The thing that makes this CD stand out is the use of historical Anglo-Latin pronunciation (vih-jih-LAY-tee as opposed to vih-jih-LAH-tay.) It is like a breath of fresh air to hear this as opposed to the 19th-century ecclesiastical/Italianate Latin that most groups use. I don't understand why so many groups are resistant or even hostile to the notion of historical pronunciation. Far from being pedantic and irrelevant, historical pronunciation is well-documented, not that hard (once you lose the baggage of your college Latin diction classes) and it does have an affect on sound of the music. In this recording, I Fagiolini provides a great example of how this can be done well and why it should be done more.
If you're interested in learning more about historical pronunciation, check out the books Singing Early Music (ed. Timothy J. McGee), English Choral Practice 1400-1650 (ed. John Morehen), and if you're lucky to find a copy, Singing in Latin (Harold Copeman.)
A well-selected collection of Byrd compositions.......1999-02-09
I Fagiolini put together an honest rendition of Byrd choral works. With a many existing recordings of Byrd choral works done with multiple voices per part, it is easy to forget that a number of such works were written for performance at a house or manor, by a very few musicians and in secret at forbidden Catholic ceremonies. I had previously only heard my favorite sacred song, Quomodo cantabimus, performed by The Sixteen. It was a delight to hear I Fagiolini with far fewer voices per part -- in this way they bring out so many of the little details that evince Byrd's true mastery. Yates' harpsichord performances are likewise honest, not overly ornamented (as it is easy enough to do with Byrd) and overall well-played. An interesting twist is I Fagiolini's pronunciation of the Latin texts, utilizing a far more English and less Italianate accent. It is quite strange to ears that are used to the latter, but an accompanying explanation justifies the accent as a choice to perform the choral works as accurately as possible.

Atmospheric Ballets.......2005-06-03
The two ballets on this disc represent Jean Francaix at his most humorous. This is the third disc in the series of Jean Francaix's orchestral music and once again demonstrates his ability to express musical ideas with wit and precision.
The ballet Le roi nu (The Naked King) was based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Emperor's New Clothes and was premiered in 1936 at the Paris Opera Ballet with Serge Lifar doing the corrriagraphy and dancing the role of the king. The ballet has been considered as Lifar's greatest achievement. The music is well-suited to the subject, colorful and expressive. The music tells the story perfectly, down to the laughter when the king, believing himself to be dressed to perfection, is found to be naked by the members of the court.
The other ballet on this disc, Les demoiselles de la nuit (The Ladies of the Night), is termed a ballet for cats in two scenes and was premiered in 1948. The action concerns several cats that mimic human behavior. The chief male cat named Baron de Grotius intends to wed a beautiful white kitten named Agathe; but she is in love with a human violinist. The marriage to the Baron takes place, provided with a nicely written procession and ceremony music. However, through her love of the violinist, Agathe becomes human herself but keeps falling back into her feline ways - most notably when she kills a bird. Agathe also has problems preventing herself from joining the nocturnal cavorting of her cat companions; the cats are chased by the violinist who falls to his death. The ballet ends with Agathe curling up next to the body of the violinist to show her devotion. Agathe was danced at the premiere by a young Margot Fonteyn. The ballet is evocative of moon-lit nights - a nocturne opens (and also closes) the first scene. The dances are playful and romantic with a touch of feline stylization to the melodies that nicely describe the cat's world in music.
Jean Francaix was truly in his element when writing his ballets. The dances are colorful and beautifully orchestrated. This is a pleasant disc that anyone interested in French music will want to have.
