Paul van Dyk spent most of the '90s perfecting a strain of credible, melodic Eurotrance that connected with clubbers all over the globe. Having honed his style and established a trademark sound, the East German DJ brings it all together on this, an album the overzealous are calling the first great dance record of the century. It begins in fine fashion with the cool breakbeat shimmer of "Vegas," swiftly followed by "Pikes," a valve-pumping Ibizan knees-up that's a tribute to the island's fabled hotel. So far, so good--this is topnotch progressive house that's guaranteed to make them move. However, if you're expecting more of the same, beware, because from here on in it's out with the Glo-Sticks and on with the face paint as a succession of clichéd trance anthems rudely gatecrash the party. From the lunar-landings vibe of "Avenue" through to the sweet pop lilt of "Face to Face," hypnotic riffs, sanguine chords, and hollow metronome beats take center stage. Van Dyk's no ATB, but ultimately this is just as one-dimensional. --Paul Tierney

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")

Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-03-03

When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

Thank you, EMI.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

5 out of 5 stars An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

i didnt even buy this cd just heard snips of it at random and it sounded good this is an old cd and still cutting edge thats why paul is number 1 right now. some of the other masters i.e. sasha, armin van buuren, tiesto, started with proper music format and then just jumped to a whole new mature so called sound. i mean is it a mid life crisis i dont know but if you spin new music format in front of me you better be ready for my criticism because it aint gonna be good. if the beats are off, sound rotation off, sound structure off, bass off, treble off, pitch off, i or any so called professional musician will raise are hands and say hey what they hell is going on you guys played perfect now you play like shrek 2 all of these so called masters cds can be shelved with the shrek 2 music anthology its that bad. the most terrible sound ever created by it or what or who would have to be attributed to the shrek 2 sound track, i still have sound nightmares from that cheese whiz oozing from the crazy minoet or sonata blarred from those god dam creatures. those so called masters are beginning to sound like the shrek 2 musical dynasty and im not the only musician sitting back and laughing maybe im wrong and i need a hearing aid but if it sounds funky its gotta be funky but dam thats like a terrible sound but if the masses want to hear the new shrek sound format than so be it but i will cover my ears

5 out of 5 stars paul tierney, low-life critic.......2006-05-22

Ladies and Gents, read the Amazon review of this CD, by one Paul Tierney, and weep for the guy, he's just a talentless hack. First of all, Van Dyk unlike everybody else in this genre, is not just a mixer, he is also a composer (I know Van Buuren and Tiesto have written their own stuff, but it is, shall we say, less than impressive stuff). Van Dyk's material is first rate (check out "Spellbound" on his later Reflections CD for another superb example of his composing ability). Second of all, this is one of the most fabulous mixes, the tracks fit brilliantly together, and it is all his own creations. Third, so far as the "same old stuff" charge by Tierney goes, just check out the last track, technically it is "We Are Alive," one of van Dyk's best known ORIGINAL compositions. Van Dyk has basically "inverted" the song, bringing forward stuff kept in the background in the original, stripping it down to a stylized few musical pulses---basically he takes his star tune and creates a new track out of it. Hardly hackneyed. The title composition also makes for an outstanding, irresistible peak song in the mix. There is nothing else like this track "out there" or "back." Really, I would love to know what Mr. Tierney thinks is original.

In Mr. Tierney's defense, many of the tracks on this CD were floating about in the community before the album came out. But that doesn't make CD1 any less impressive; indeed, the reverse is so. Van Dyk does use some of the same sound effects here as in some of his other works, and it would be better if he hadn't, but that is small change compared to the achievement of this CD.

CD 1 is the big draw, described above. CD 2 starts with a little trio of great tracks, then veers into some moderate remixes of older van Dyk hits. There is less mixing, but solid music. The highlight on CD 2 is "Tell Me Why (Club Mix)".

This is a must-own CD for anyone interested in House/Trance. It was the first mix I ever listened to (the second was Armin van Buuren's "004", which like "Out There and Back," features a fabulous mix on CD1, and solid backup stuff [mostly mixes of late 90s classic trance tracks] on CD 2). Those two have set quite a bar for later listens to meet, really only Digweed's Fabric 20 has come up to that level, with perhaps van Buuren's State of Trance '05 CD1, and some of the Hotel Costes stuff, coming close (such as, in the Costes series, the excellent Saks CD).

Hey Mr. Tierney, why don't you switch over to "reviewing" country music or Pee Wee Herman's greatest hits, where you belong?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
    Very good value.

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02

    Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifts your soul, takes your mind into the heavens.......2006-01-06

I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections. The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Don't pass this one up

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

5 out of 5 stars god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

    4 out of 5 stars Excerpts.......1999-12-23

This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01

I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

      3 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2006-02-22

I'm giving this compilation 3 stars not because it isn't good...but because I feel that the String Quartet didn't take advantage of The Smiths catalogue. I was disappointed to see that some of my favorites were not covered. Maybe for volume 2?

Other than that...it was mostly beautiful. The cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was particularly good. In fact, they managed to make it even more
melancholy than the original! I didn't even know that was possible.

      3 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2004-06-20

This CD sounds like a good idea, but on hearing it I was disappointed. The string quartet doesnt seem enough for a lot of these songs, maybe with a few more instruments in there it could work. It also seems, like many other string quartet tribute CDs, that these people playing the songs are not fans of the band, they don't seem to get into the music, or understand what makes it great. This CD is only nescassary for hardcore smiths fans that already have their albums.

      4 out of 5 stars Great album........2004-04-04

This is a wonderful album if you truly are a "Smiths" fan. The strings do an excellent job of masking as Morrissey's voice. However, even if you aren't a fan of The Smiths, the melodies are enjoyable. Johnny Marr will go down as a gifted guitarist/writer (as all his Guitar magazine accolades). People who aren't fans or are "Morrissey-jaded" wouldn't like this or probably anything else not Morrissey. Oh yeah, that's right I said it!!!

      3 out of 5 stars a little odd.......2003-10-05

Uh, this is wierd. It is like Morrissey and the Smiths covering Metalica. It just doesn't fit. Even so, for the hardcore Smiths fan it is worth the buy. Back To The Old HOuse was enjoyable, but I would suggest that you listen to the versions of other artists. And who chose the playlist? Crappy at best.

3 out of 5 stars Worked for The Cure tribute not for The Smiths.......2003-09-08

The String Quartet's tribute to The Smiths doesn't quite work as well as the tribute to The Cure. Maybe it's because the music from The Cure is much more colorful and has more layer and works wonderfully well with string instruments. However, without Morrisey's voice the string music doesn't work well.

Though American, Barbara Bonney has spent most of her career in Europe and, up until recently, never saw the need to sing in English. But this collection is entirely in English, featuring the title piece written for her by Previn--sort of a tone poem for voice, nice but not great--plus Samuel Barber's more familiar Hermit Songs, Dominick Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs and Aaron Copland's Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. It's one of her best recordings and a big step in the gradual evolution of an artist who began as another pretty-voiced soprano and is becoming one of the most memorable recitalists of her generation. --David Patrick Stearns

      5 out of 5 stars A soprano must!.......2007-01-08

This collection of songs is very helpful for sopranos--all of you will need to know these pieces at some point!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album, with some minor quibbles.......2005-08-13

One of my first experiences as an accompanist was to play the Argento Elizabethan songs, and ever since I've had a special affinity for them. That alone was my reason for purchasing this particular disc, and the fact that the Barber Hermit Songs were here was a major bonus!

Bonney does a beautiful job with all the sets presented here, and Previn delivers a perfectly complimentary accompaniment to Bonney's soaring tone.

One thing I found interesting about Bonney was her frequent use of straight tone. I can't verify if she's chosen to do so for interpretive reasons, but there are occasions in all the sets (esp. the Barber and Argento) where I find that it sticks out. In general, her tone is always beautiful, and the lack of vibrancy doesn't affect the pitch or flow of the line. It's a very minor issue, but I feel compelled to mention it for those who may not be expecting this stylistic detail.

At any rate, the repertoire is amazing, and I think this disc is almost essential as the Rubinstein disc I reviewed elsewhere on Amazon. I'm not letting my issue with Bonney's vibrancy take away from the 5-star rating. :)

      4 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2002-03-04

I bought this cd a while ago. The reason I bought it is because Barbara Bonney is my favourite artist. I think she sings beautifully in this cd. But for the repetoire, I think it's a litte bit too contemparory for me and I am not really into that. Still, I think she did an excellent job in this recording! It's really worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars International, and yet local.......2001-02-20

Mrs. Bonney, born in America but with several years in Europe is able to give us the best of the two worlds.

The CD is a masterpiece of fantastic singing and with heart and the freedom that Mr. Previn adds to his piano playing.

I bought the CD based in the recommendation of the Gramophone magazine, and again they are right.

Previos review gives a good overall picture of the performance

5 out of 5 stars Bonney Changes Course.......1999-09-13

This recording marks a new high for Bonney. While her silvery tone and lyricism have always been more than suffcient to captivate her listeners, Bonney takes risks on this disc like never before. She has a maturity and depth to her sound that makes one realize that her older recordings were more shallow in retrospect. Not only is she willing to step out of the box so many sopranos fall into: of wanting to sound "pretty" all the time; she is aggressive and surprisingly edgy in her interpretations of the Barber set, shockingly frank in the Argento, and convincingly ominous in the closing Previn vocalise. With this disc, Bonney has truly established herself as a force in vocal music, and as the definitive American singer today.
