Product Description
Rare Moods is the result of long time collaboration between Manu Boubli, head of Comet Records, and Liam Farrel, aka Doctor L, ubiquitous musician and producer.

Melting influences as different as Talking Heads, Sun Ra, Moodyman, George Clinton, Fela Kuti, DJ Shadow, and Pink Floyd, Rare Moods's music is the missing link between spiritual jazz from the 70’s, abstract hip-hop and Detroit techno sounds.

4 out of 5 stars I get a kick out of you........2006-01-19

This was Esquivel's "sequel" to Other Worlds, Other Sounds. After his breakup with RCA Records, he recorded this album for Reprise Records. It opens with the bombastic "The Breeze and I", which is one of the best things he ever recorded. The rest of the album features typical Esquivel. Eccentric arrangements, "zoo zoo zoo" singing chorus, weird instrumentation. You know, all that cool stuff. This is an essential album for Esquivel fans.

5 out of 5 stars I think this is his best.......2004-05-27

If you are thinking about trying Esquivel, this is the one to get. It is a CD that really grows on you, regardless of your music taste or background. A classic

5 out of 5 stars The lone Reprise Esquivel is a WINNER.......2002-01-18

Frank Sinatra really dug Esquivel (no, I am not kidding). So when Juan and RCA were at loggerheads regarding his controversial and subsequently unreleased SEE IT IN SOUND, he jumped ship and recorded an LP for Frank's Reprise label. The recording technique, using 35mm film instead of magnetic tape, yielded a terrific soundstage and unparalleled dynamic range for the time. The full orchestra is on board for this outing and they play really well. Don't buy this one thinking buzzimba and wild stereo effects. This is straight ahead arranging but with the pow pows and usual Esquivellian orchestral flairs. The sound alone is a real marvel (Mercury records employed this recording method very successfully in their classical music department and Command Records literally made a living with 35mm film recording). You gotta get this one.

5 out of 5 stars melt.......2001-10-05

Like the TV era it evokes, this album projects perfection in life and living. Nothing can harm you when Esquivel is your background music, and the more martinis and pipe smoking the better. Unlike some of his more frenetic efforts, this Esquivel album is absolutely majestic and soothing. It will counter all but the worst of moods.

5 out of 5 stars Esquivel Genuis.......2001-10-04

After four years of recording for RCA, Esquivel's popularity was still high, and yet, his contract was not renewed. So, he signed on to the Sinatra owned label, Reprise. This album has many cuts that have been used on commercials, news specials and television shows. His arrangement of "I Get A Kick Out Of You" is so original, that you'll be playing it over and over again and attempt to analyze his method of orchestration. The only other piano version that can top Esquivel in this song is Nat King Cole. Cole's version is available on the album "The Piano Style of Nat King Cole." Another great album, worthy of owning. Although the playing time on this album is short, every tune is a model of unique arranging and stunning orchestral arranging. If you are new to Esquivel, this is a great album in which to get started This one is intended as a sequel to his RCA release, Other Worlds, Other Sounds, but the fact that is not as eccentric as some of his other releases, make this an easy album to new comers to the great Esquivel. A great album.

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FANTASTIC CD !!.......2007-06-28

I'll keep this short: I'm not new to chant or choral music but there are SO MANY options out here that it's hard to know which ones are worth buying. I've got a few titles in my budding collection but I have to say that this particular recording is FANTASTIC. It is at once awe inspiring, meditative, and peaceful. Simply wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars Sacred and a treasure!.......2007-06-11

Wow! This is as good as the first Sacred Treasures if not better. These holy and divine works are truly "the speech of angels".

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2006-12-28

I've really become taken with Russian choral music as of late. I've tried to get my hands on every recording I can, and amongst them all this is one of the very best. The phrasing, tonality and selection is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars More Divine Beauty and Peace!.......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as of "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the text to a Russian "Cherubic Hymn" prescribes) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES III"...

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09

Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

        5 out of 5 stars Seasons.......2004-10-11

If tourmates Windy & Carl specialize in densely beautiful atmospheric soundscapes, then Landing is its lighter, shimmering counterpart. Where Windy & Carl use a myriad of effects pedals to coax the perfect drone out of a couple of guitars, Landing achieves a similar result with a drizzle of plucked strings over a bed of floating ambience.

The difference, though, is that, after a smattering of full lengths and EPs of prime ambient music, Landing has finally woken up from its blissful slumber and created eight of the loveliest ambient pieces that take measures toward becoming actual songs. Sure, much of the record is free-floating, but at least part of every song has some structure by which to identify it.

The theme of the album is, of course, seasons, and Landing seems to be more concerned with the colder seasons of fall and winter. Beginning with the gorgeously dreamy "Fall Song," the band captures the plaintive nature of these two seasons--a coolness that somehow feels very warm. "First Snow" is another standout, with its lilting beginning melody that transforms into something free and uplifting, and "Clarke Street" waltzes with the grace of falling leaves.

Seasons is an accomplished album because of its melding of atmosphere and song structure--two elements at odds with each other in American indie rock of the 1990s. But artistic merit aside, this is music to be truly enjoyed. Listen to "Encircled (Through Fallen Leaves)" and see if it doesn't turn the tree you've seen in the backyard for ages into an exceptional thing of beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Like Low? Love Landing........2003-06-18

well, if you like Low you'll love Landing. Combining acoustic and electric guitars with a hint of drums (with brushes of course) creates the unique sound heard on Seasons. Songs seem to melt into eachother and sometimes themselves (encircled (through fallen leaves)) (track 2). Autumn is the main feel of this entire 8 song album, it's perfect for fall driving or contemplating. By no means an upbeat record and by all means a must have.
