Bristol's Massive Attack released a classic with their first album, Blue Lines, but only those who were paying careful attention noticed; soon, they were overshadowed by the likes of Tricky and Portishead, who were colleagues. But not so after the release of Protection, which sported a massive hit and was just as critically acclaimed as their first album. (The hit was the title track, for which Everything but the Girl's Tracy Thorn lent her divine pipes--a move that made the act's name, and also presaged EBTG's move to the dance floor.) Eschewing the showmanship of their scene mates, Massive prefer subtler soundscapes and using a diverse range of vocalists (including Horace Andy, Nicolette, and Tricky) who give them a number of flavors and moods with which to work. Protection is an understated album with a rich palette; it reveals more of itself on repeated listens, growing better--and deeper--each time. --Randy Silver

3 out of 5 stars princess tracey!.......2007-05-11

as usual, i order a cd like 'protection' for a song or two. then i get a great surprise.

in this case, it's the title track, with vocals by tracey thorn. thorn, along with lisa gerrard, dusty springfield, doris day, billie holiday, aretha franklin and a few others, has a uniquely gorgeous voice and styling that is immediately identifiable for so many things--a social scene, a certain era, a mood.

unlike the others, she has still to get her due and fame as a singer. here's hoping that people will use her and get her heard as much as the law will allow.

4 out of 5 stars I'm surprised that this album is so underated........2006-05-22

A lot of people prefer blue lines over protection and I just don't understand that. I found protection to be great. Possibly one of the best CDs that Massive attack has ever released other than Mezzanine. Eurochild is mindblowingly amazing. Karmacoma, Better things, Heat Miser, weather storm and spying glass are also exceptional. The only reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is cause of the last track. A cover of the Doors, Light my fire that, to me, seems very pointless.

5 out of 5 stars timeless album!!.......2006-04-18

Eleven years have pass since Massive Attack came out with this album, and when i listen to it, still sounding as fresh and new as that then it?s an amazing work , with the colaboration of the also amaizing Craig Armstrong, Tracy Thorn and Tricky .

I have always thought that melancholy it?s the ?nice?part of being sad, well this is the feeling in this CD . With sublime work on the piano made by Armstrong and the angel voice of Tracy Thorn (Everything But The Girl) this three guys made a classic album that is going to last forever , full of inovative sounds, vocals and deep feeling. While others reviewers think of it as a dark album (which really is , i?m not going to desagree) i think of it more as a beawtiful and melancholic album but no matter how we feel it, this is a most have!!!!

No matter what kind of music you like this is one of those albums that have something for everybody unless you like Paulina Rubio

If this album would not have included ?Lite My Fire? this could have been call PERFECTION instead of PROTECTION

4 out of 5 stars Massive Attack does not go the protective route on Sophomore CD.......2006-04-15

After hearing about Massive Attack from a friend I decided to check out some of their songs. The production on this album is completely solid. If this album was nothing but an instrumental piece it would recieve 5 stars from me, however, the lyrics and vocals of several of the songs (more directly Karmacoma & Three)brought the albums rating down one star.

Album highlights include: "Protection," "Spying Glass," "Weather Storm," and "Sly"
Album embarissment: "Light my Fire (Live)" -- this is the only track I skip when listening to the record.

If you like Massive Attack I would recommend listening to Telepopmusik. As soon as I put in this CD I thought of them. Amazing french Trip-hop band known for the song "Breathe"

Massive Attack: Protection - 8/10

5 out of 5 stars vintage trip hop.......2006-01-24

i like how the people who wrote negative reviews, did so in the year 2005. this album was released in '94. back in those days this album was excellent, with tracy singing in the right key and all! more than one can say for portishead. yeah, of course newer chill albums are going to sound better and fresher. if you spend all day listening to bt, then yeah, kraftwerk is going to sound a bit boring. does that mean that kraftwerk's albums sucked? NO! hell NO!

As you are about to know, Monsieur Pompougnac is the father of Hôtel Costes family. This is his second solo album, and for me, it's way better than the first one. There are no surprises: great vocals, finger tapping melodies and an extreme good taste all around. If you are already a Costes fan, go on and buy this record: there is nothing new, but who needs something new when you can still be hypnotized with an ever-same-good-music. If you are brand new to this (welcome back to Earth) and give it a try, may you join the club

4 out of 5 stars A Hip Little Compilation.......2007-04-17

Very listenable, even danceable, and certainly high calibre. The PPPP is a great revisit of the 60's genre, replete with swing and jazz elements couched in modern rhythm and acoustic quality.

5 out of 5 stars One Neat Album.......2006-08-11

This is one neat album. Almost all of the tracks are great.

5 out of 5 stars MEE-OWW! PURRFECTLY PINK PANTHER-Y..........2006-06-13

... hands down the best compilation I've heard in quite some time - an intelligent selection of contemporary tunes that fit nicely with the penthouse theme... highlights include the jet-set sound of Koop's "Summer Sun", Fantastic Plastic Machine's retro-60's "Bachelor Pad" and the outstanding "Shot In The Dark/Peter Gunn" mix... a definite desert-island disc.

4 out of 5 stars I wish there was a remake/remix of "It Had Better Be Tonight".......2005-10-27

Henry Mancini was a master musician. His music will always be remembered and anytime you watch a film that he scored you'll hear what a great musician he was. You can actually hear his trademark sound and get to recognize his style. Pink Panther's Penthouse Party came out to coincide with the release of the DVD box set of the Pink Panther Movies. The CD includes the original version of the Pink Panther Theme as well as remixes of it by Fischerspooner which basically adds the signature Fischerspooner sound from (#1) and mixes a modern dance beat to the original. Also the Malibu Remix which adds a big beat sound to the original version of the track. And then there's also the Pink Panther Theme Revisited by St. Germain which slows down the track and adds a funky, jazzy and groovy beat to the original. There's also a remake of the Shot In The Dark Theme mixed with The Peter Gunn Theme called (The Gunn Mix) by Chris Mancini and Lennart. This is a fun and groovy remake which basically mixes the two Henry Mancini classics together as one piece. A great idea! The album also contains some original tracks by artists that sound or are inspired by the Henry Mancini sound. Some great tracks on here are included like Tres Tres Chic by Mocean Worker which fits perfectly here. This track has the french vocal sampling to the loungy dance beat track. Then there's Intraspettro by Les Hommes which sounds like an update Bossa Nova lounge track. Bossa Per Due is also another fun track on here dating back to 2000 but still sounding retro fresh! I remember this track was used in a Nissan Commercial back then. But a great track and work perfectly in the Pink Panther soundtrack. Other stand out cuts on here include Voulez Vous by Arling and Cameron, Sacre Francais by Dimitri From Paris, Bachelor Pad by Fantastic Plastic Machine, The Girl From Ipanema by Fantastic Plastic Machine and Smokebomb by Ursula 1000. The only track i had a problem with in the collection was San Antonio by Kinky. I like the track but I didn't think it fit here. Oh well overall a really fun CD.

5 out of 5 stars So Very, Very Cool--A Finely Crafted Tribute.......2005-02-24

Of all of the lounge, smooth, cool-jazz, chill and other trendy compilations of the last few years, this is one of the best, coherent in organization and sequence, consistent in theme, and with a unified aural feel. It all fits together just about perfectly, with that unstated Panther attitude and feeling.

Remember, the Pink Panther (original) was an all-Euro production, with European actors, locations, and a decidedly pre-Mod-60s, riche-chic Euro feel. After all, the original locations were Paris, Cortina, and Monte Carlo. This album faithfully captures that reserved, understated and laidback Euro cool.

The liner notes are disappointingly scant, a single albeit accurate paragraph about the Panther, with some whack homage to some artist named Shag. Apparently Shag is "proud to have created the newest chapter in the ongoing evolution of (the Panther)," but it's achingly unclear what this copy is talking about and how it relates to this CD. The liner notes could have been much better, with at least a nod to the brilliance of Mancini.

Sadly missing on this CD is a take on "It Had Better Be Tonight." I'm disappointed that there were no artists who wanted to take on this mod-rocking bit of ski-sweater fireside dance mania.

The CD opens just the right way, with the original Mancini theme, but the jazzy solo and bridge are cut from the track; Track 1 just ends cold and the Fischerspooner theme Mix kicks in. This is an awful segue, and a disrespectful butchering of Mancini's original theme. This Fischerspooner mix, however, is a perfect counter to the original.

The Gabin Remix Edit of Peggy Lee asking the musical question "Fever" is very well done. The pace is just right, not a pounding club bpm, but with enough drive to get up and dance to it if you want, or just to sit back in your sling chair and nod your head to the rhythm. The horns are sparse and soft, with a lot of smooth echo and tremolo. Good stuff.

Titan's "Corazon" follows, and continues the up-tempo trend of the CD. This is a get-on-the-floor dance track. It's a smooth shift here, geographically and ethnically, away from the original Euro Panther vibe to the Latin, and it works. It's not intrusive or jolting, and fits very well after "Fever." Good addition, and a good selection for this release.

"Smokebomb" follows, and is a full-on electronica club assault. It's not too heavy or hard in punctuation--no "Spybreak" here--and it follows well the bass feel and sounds of "Corazon." Good flute and well-defined bongo punctuations in the center, and a great thwanging guitar breakdown to take us back to the Panther theme, maybe even as far back as "After The Fox," a sadly overlooked Mancini soundtrack masterpiece. This track echoes the Latin feel of the previous track and the subtle shift in the CD's direction. Another good choice here, and good sequencing.

Then follows Pizzicato Five's "Girl From Ipanema." Sorry, but this tune is out of place here, too far apart musically, geographically, ethnically, even in metaphysical linking of the ultra-cool cat with hot-n-steamy Brazil.

Then comes Fatboy Slim's relative hit "Weapon of Choice." The muted intro goes on a bit too long before the tune kicks in, but its bass-heavy sound and depth fit well in the CD.

"Summer Sun" follows and fits as well, bringing the album back down a bit in tone and pace, slowing things. This is a light and airy tune, very cool and smooth, and you can hear the sunshine, good stuff. You can hear this tune on "Jazz Lounge" a definite Euro-feel release, which I recommend.

"Bachelor Pad" follows, and it's a fantastic melding of the old and new. This would've worked in any of the mod films of the late 60s, with great fuzzed-out rhythm and lead guitars, and a simple beat and melody to follow. Great dance tune, but again, not too heavy, not pounding or too fast.

Then there's the "Revisited" Panther theme. A better title would've been "Pantha Dub." I swear, my eyes were watering and I was getting hard munchies just bobbing my head with my eyes half-closed to this reggae-fied, horn-heavy yet still very cool take on the original.

I really enjoy the "A Shot in the Dark/Peter Gunn" mix. Very nice phrasing throughout, with most of the original arrangements and sound replicated here. The two themes move in and out of each other very nicely, playing off their sounds and images quite well. One quibble: the track ends way too soon. A great jam like this one should be allowed to run free and have some fun.

"Bossa Per Due" follows, and is a nice, quiet, even haunting chill tune. Good organ punctuation, with smooth female vocals, and nice counterpoint to the drive and humming guitars of the preceding mix.

"Intraspettro" comes next, and is a fantastic addition to this CD. Another piece with a single singing female vocal, it fits perfectly. Great Euro feel and sound, the sound of movement, of adventure, of clear weather and hazy horizons over the Mediterranean. You can find this track also on "Jazz Lounge."

"Tres Tres Chic" is interesting, but the over-enunciated French lyrics quickly become grating. I noticed this also on "Voulez-Vous?" and especially "Sacre Francais," the French ultimately distracting from what are smooth, simple, cool, and enjoyable tunes.

The Panther theme Malibu re-mix concluding the CD is very, very cool, a great closer. This is the sound of James Bond meeting the Panther. It rocks, but again, sadly, the jam just doesn't go on long enough.

In conclusion, this CD is a winner, a fantastic compilation and fitting tribute to the original understated, implicit 60s Panther cool, brought right into the new millennium and updated splendidly. The tracks fit (with a minor exception), compliment the attitude and vibe of the original, and contribute to an overall superb release.

Washington D.C.'s Eighteenth Street Lounge functions not only as the town hot spot, it's also the label name and recording studio for Thievery Corporation and their cadre of like-minded "outernationalists." Fusing pieces of Latin lounge, trip-hop, and acid jazz, the Den of Thieves compilation features the label's smooth, loose downtempo, as airy and cool as white linen on a hot day. With a diverse lineup, Thieves wanders all over the globe, from Nicola Conte's Rio-in-spring remix of Ursula 1000's "Samba 1000" to the baroque trance-jazz of Blue States. Elsewhere, the Karminsky Experience delves into sitars and ambient breakbeats for "Exploration," while Federico Aubele lets the dub flow for "El Amor De Este Pueblo." But no matter where Thieves meanders, it keeps the mood on the edge of tranquility enough to keep your head nodding yet not enough to break up the conversation. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Relaxing CD.......2004-05-23

ESL pulls off another excellent compilation that showes off their artists work. This cd is full of great lounge/groovy tunes. It starts off with a great track from the Argentinean guitarist Federico Aubele, some great guitar work. A great listen all the way through; it ends with a great piano focused track from Arkestra One. Do your ears a favor and check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars just in time for summer, a new ESL comp.......2003-06-12

the eighteenth street lounge are one of the original american organizations to carry the torch for downtempo and nu-jazz. spearheaded by the ever-popular thievery corporation, the label end of the business (there is, yes, an 18th street lounge -- in washington, dc), ESL has been taking it's cues from the european and italian music scenes and discreetly putting out quality releases of stylish, modern electronic music with heavy jazz, dub and latin stylings for about 5 or 6 years now. while their roster of artists is small, the quality of the music coming from ESL is almost always consistently high.

the latest in their series of ongoing label compilations, 'den of thieves' gives us the latest offerings from the label's current stack of hitters.

things kick off grandly with newcomer frederico aubele, who's 'postales' is an organic blend of latin guitar and sensual vocals anchored by a hip hop beat and set in tone by some subtle accordian that immediately brings to mind gotan project. aubele shows up again towards the end with 'el amor de este pueblo', a dubbed-out take on world music that shows the new label signing certainly has some talent.

thievery corporation themselves show up with an unreleased track, 'language symbolique', which perfectly showcases their always amazing production values (by label knob-twiddler desmond williams, if i'm not mistaken, who shows up himself with the track 'brooklyn blues' from his debut record, 'delights of the garden'). it's a track that really highlights their distinct spliffed-out, haute-couture sound and makes you wonder why it never made it on to 'richest man in babylon' ...

another highlight is the kaminsky experience and their wicked 'exploration', a 5-minute bass-and-sitar dancefloor excursion, as well as their dreamy 'departures -- all lush vibes and soft strings.

also popping up is the secret weapon of the ESL flock, thunderball, who show up with two tracks -- one with liftoff called 'welcome back cooper', a funk-sitar workout, and also 'panther', a new track as near as i can tell and another stunner from these guys. if you don't have their two long-players, 'ambassadors of sound' and 'scorpio rising', i highly recommend them ... they have a great boombastic, bass-heavy sound that draws euqally from quality drum&bass and funky seventies soundtrack scores -- top-shelf.

there's a few misses here, but overall it's a nice selection and a worth companion to the other ESL collections. people always say to put these records on at dinner parties, but personally i find them to be perfect morning music -- try a saturday between 10 and 12 and see what it does for your day.

one question: when are we gonna get a second installment of 'easy tempo'? easily their best compilation so far, even tho it is all music from the 60's and 70's ...

4 out of 5 stars Cool Thievery Tunes.......2003-06-10

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed - but that is mainly becuase I was hoping ESL's next compilation would be like their Jet Society. However their focus on the lounge scene has seen them and the music sort of evolve.

Having said that, this is a good cd - great dark lounge. ESL is going for another cool easy like soundtrack feel in this one and I think they did a pretty good job of doing it. You can put this in, set the lights low, sip a coffee and be at ease. This is good music and features some very talented artists, and IMO Thievery seems to be going back into the right direction. Although I do still question how they are so very much into the India sounds.

Stand-outs on this CD to me is, of course, Samba 1000. This is a classic Nicola Conte remix. The track starts a build sort of reminiscent of the Oscar Peterson rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" before turning into a breezy sort of bossa. Other standouts are The Karminsky Experience's Exploration - good sort of up-beat track that touches on all sorts of musical styles. Fans of Thievery's DJ Kicks should recognize it as the great cut before "Coming From the Top". I also like the coolness of Desmond Williams Brookly Blues and Arkestra One's Into the Light is a terrific yet strange sort of song to me.

Songs that didn't quite fit the mold - Blue States has better from his new album, and Hommage by Les Hommes is a good tune, but there are other good tracks from their feature release that could've gotten a nod.

All in all, good cd. I'd recommend it. Likewise, I think if you like this you'd dig their DJ Kicks cd - and vice versa. It's slower than the DJ Kicks, but it reminds me of the ambience of that release. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A GAZILLION STARS *******************************************************************************************.......2007-06-20

I RECENTLY PURCHASED AROUND 1000 WORLD MUSIC CDS AND HAVE THEM ALL IN MY COMPUTER AND I PLAY THEM ON RANDOM -- EVERY TIME I HEAR A REALLY COOL SONG THAT I SIMPLY MUST STOP WHAT I'M WORKING ON TO INVESTIGATE WHAT IT IS, 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 IT TURNS OUT TO BE ONE OF THE SONGS ON ONE OF THE 4 TANTRA LOUNGE CDS I HAVE. I FELT COMPELLED TO WRITE A REVIEW BECAUSE I TOOK A CHANCE IN BUYING ALL THE WORLD CDS I HAVE TO EXPANSE MY LISTENING HORIZONS AND REALLY WANT TO PROMOTE HOW MUCH I LIKE THIS LABEL.

    4 out of 5 stars Upbeat Zen.......2007-01-09

If you like upbeat Zen type music, this album and the sequels are pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Simply incredible! There are no words to describe it!.......2006-06-17

I was totally mesmerized at what came out of my headphones when I popped in this CD. Granted, it was the first of this series that I've bought and it costed me almost an entire 20 dollar bill but it was absolutlely worth the price.

    5 out of 5 stars Tantriffic!.......2005-09-22

This is a very nice compliation of electronic music in south asian themes. It's all real music and the editor managed to avoid tedious repetitive music. All cuts are densely layered pieces that you can listen to over and over. It's real music, too, not some computerized elevator music. If you like dancable lounge and chillout with a mysterious south asian and middle-eastern themes, then this is your album.

5 out of 5 stars Om My Goodness!.......2006-01-30

Don't know what our little "elounger" below is talking about! To each his own, but I have collected Om Lounge Cds since day one, and this one is seriously amazing...very chilled-out, jazzy, and *down* -- possibly the most sophisticated CD in their library...similar in some ways to the earlier sets, eg. very urbane, very Euro in attitude n' mood.

I highly recommend this disc to all REAL afficinados of this musical genre... inexperienced swimmers beware, this one's too deep for you!!

    4 out of 5 stars Om 8 is On!.......2004-03-26

This is a kicking CD. It has a little bit of everything. It offers you a taste of some exotic rhythms and smooth beats. If the first track by Zeb doesn't get you, your dead brother, dead!

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-02-25

I disagree with the other review. This is a great CD. If you like good downtempo music with nice beats then you will like this CD. This is one the best in the Om Lounge series. I also like Om Lounge 3 and 5. A nice compilation with beats, vocals and one song with hip-hop. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars worse with age?.......2004-02-24

each release seems to be getting worse and worse. i can't say anything good about this album. Maybe they should spend a little time on quality, not quantity of new releases.. don't waste your money.

        Amazon.com

Falling loosely under the rubric of the '90s lounge/exotica craze--specifically the revival of interest in bossa nova, samba, and Brazilian-inflected jazz-funk styles--this CD culls a consistently interesting set of tracks from a widespread network of musicians and record labels. Although some of the artists actually hail from Brazil, others are spreading the good word from France, Italy, and even Norway. Portugal's Nortesul Records starts the collection with a delicately beautiful song from singer Teresa, and the perfect balance of solid groove and chanteuse vocals hits a peak with the Tom y Joyce track "Vai Minha Tristeza", one of several tracks from performers associated with France's Yellow Productions. Italy's Nicola Conte's "Bossa per Due" combines organ, guitar, and wordless singing with a little sitar and synthesizer, swooping into a breezy four minutes. Also from Italy, representing the Irma Records stable, the Cordara Orchestra presents the CD's title track, a gently melancholy instrumental that has early '70s sit-com written all over it--you can just see Jack Klugman or Mary Tyler Moore having a pensive walk in the park after some minor and not irreversible emotional defeat. Overall, the mix of rhythmic complexity, emotional cool, and a slightly kitschy sensibility will satisfy aficionados and may pleasantly surprise newcomers. --Bob Bannister

5 out of 5 stars My Fourth Copy To Date.......2006-09-30

I just purchased my fourth copy due to a thief who obviously has fine taste in music and deserves bad karma indefinetely. This disc has been my savior over the past seven years while Driving home in Los Angeles regardless of traffic or time. It has also been a top play selection for the evenings spent with female guests. And a Sunday morning sense of peace seven days a week. This is a fact; If I do not have access to ESL's Jet Society at any given day or night of the week, I become at a loss for motivation and sense of being. Quite honest, pretty much naked. If you live in a major metropolitan city, play this disc at vol. 7-8 with an above agerage sound system and roll up the windows. Make sure all sound levels are set accordingly. This compilation should overpower your endorphins with waves of euphoric ectesy and ring your spine. Seven years after my first copy, it still moves me. Enjoy as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Swanky, smooth, and samba-riffic!.......2004-03-25

This cd has it all, a perfect soundtrack to poolside cocktails, a cool-down drive, or after dinner fun with a select few. A somewhat skewed and slightly blunted approach to Carnivale that will leave you wanting more, and ESL (the label this is on) has it for you. Dont' miss out!

3 out of 5 stars Probably the lowest rate.......2003-06-16

I am not agree with the most people that makes review of this CD. Infact my real rate it's between the 2 and 3, probably the lowest!I am sorry but i cannnot understand why in this work there are 3 songs like the last 2 (Balanco and Cordara Orchestra) and like the third one (Hi Fi trumpet). It's a pity because the rest it's quite a good job. In any case the project (a jet society around the world) was probably too ambicius. The resault it's more a travel in the night clubs where you can find old rich men with young nice girls. This is the atmosphera that i feel on this Cd. In any case there are something good ( for exemple the first song Lisboa a note) and with good mix (in particular between 5 to 9 tracks). At the end i suggest not to buy it.....but if you buy more than 100 cd in a year...well you can also buy it!

        4 out of 5 stars sweetness.......2003-05-19

You know those super-cool bossa nova do-do-la-la vocals you here over car commercials as the honda or peugot glides down a frosty curving highway? Well, the songs in their entirety are on this collection of brazilian, portugese and italian music, each breezier and more soulful than the next.

4 out of 5 stars Captain, fly me to Rio!!.......2002-12-24

Oh yeah! This is just a wonderful cd to get you in the mood for Carnivale! The Brazilian influences are very vivid and the tracks are laced with beautiful vocals and wonderful percussions. Some tracks to highlight:

        onde anda o meu amor
        lunera
        vai minha tristeza
        lla femme fin de siecle
        lisboa a noite
        bossa per due

these are some truly wonderful tracks that give this cd a 4 star rating IMO. throw this in, get on your plane, and take a journey.
