5 out of 5 stars Gets you pumped!.......2006-01-12

Regardless of the fact that the title song does not garner an artist with the stature of a Paul McCartney, Carley Simon or Nancy Sinatra, it's effect is one of the most upbeat title songs in James Bond history! It really compliments the movie opening segment to a climax that gets you totally pumped up to watch more. Trying to follow up Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die is a tough act for anyone, but this definitely delivers!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF JOHN BARRYs MOST OVERLOOKED 007 SCORES.......2005-01-24

Back in 1974 many fans wanted John Barry back after his one film hiatus from the Bond series. Barry returned with a score to THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, Roger Moore's second outing as 007. Track-1: "Main Title: The Man With the Golden Gun" is very good. Lulu has an incredibly strong voice and the song has a certain rock element that was in contradiction to Binder's titles, yet it is very upbeat and sets the tone of the entire film. On this CD it sounds great and has improved with time. A beautiful girl on an isolated beach towels down Scaramanga as he emerges from the water in a surrealistically exotic locale. This sets up Track-2: "Scaramanga's Fun House" where Scaramanga lures gangster Rodney Hood into the funhouse in a duel to the death. This is a great track brimming with Barry's unique sound where the music first reflects the opulence of Scaramanga's domicile and then as they enter the fun house Barry creates a spiraling `stalking theme' mixed with source music from a Western saloon and Chicago Roaring 20s era gangland back alley. This `stalking theme' is central to the Scaramanga character and his deadly profession as the listener immediately associates the music with the character. Track-8: "Hip's Trip" is an excellent example where Barry is able to write suspense music using a repeating dynamic melody that builds in intensity. This is a technique he developed and has mastered ever since the safe-cracking scene in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. This technique is probably the most identifiable stylistic trademark in John Barry's music. Track-3: "Chew Me in Grisly Land" is rich in oriental flavor and includes an effective slow paced rendition of "The James Bond Theme." John Barry does here for Roger Moore what he did for Sean Connery and George Lazenby giving them each their own unique musical rendition of "The James Bond Theme." Track-9: "Kung Fu Fight" features a good oriental motif and ends with a very catchy instrumental version of "The Man with the Golden Gun." One of the best cuts on the CD is Track-6: "Goodnight Goodnight" which is a very slow and haunting nocturnal version of "The Man with the Golden Gun." Track-7: "Let's Go Get `Em" is a tour de force of John Barry's new orchestration of "The James Bond Theme" identifiable with his Roger Moore scores. This track has a lot of punch behind it as it melds the very catchy instrumental version of "The Man with the Golden Gun" with a rousing rendition of "The James Bond Theme." Track-10: "In Search of Scaramanga's Island" is a great background composition to Bond's impressive solo flight through the uprooted rock formations near Phuket, Thailand to Scaramanga's island. Track-11: "Return to Scaramanga's Fun House" mixes Nick Nack's theme, the `stalking theme' and elements of "The James Bond Theme" as Bond is now lured into Scaramanga's game of death. This is an excellent climatic piece of scoring. Track-12: "End Title: The Man With the Golden Gun - Reprise" is in the tradition of the YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE album. The last track begins with a beautifully orchestrated version of the main title, which leads into Lulu's strong vocal rendition. I like this CD. It contained quite a bit of music from the film for once, running close to 45 minutes. When EMI reissued THUNDERBALL, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER and LIVE AND LET DIE with extra tracks it was rumored that they had also uncovered the original THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN score as well. Unfortunately, EMI was over their budget for this project and those extra tracks never made it onto the reissue of this soundtrack. Perhaps the length of music already on the album influenced this decision. Of coarse this is just speculation. On the positive side this soundtrack did not spare in its use of "The James Bond Theme" which most fans can't get enough of. My favorite cuts are Track-6: "Goodnight Goodnight" and Track-8: "Hip's Trip." "Goodnight Goodnight" stands its ground alongside Barry's best Bond compositions. "Hip's Trip" even though lightly orchestrated as already mentioned represented a new technique of repeating a dynamic melody that builds in intensity. This is a very interesting and satisfying James Bond album.

5 out of 5 stars Remains a Good John Barry Bond Score to this day.......2004-02-05

This is an interesting album for several reasons. John Barry's music in general seemed to be going through a state of transition around 1974 and this album is a good example of that. Also, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN was the first James Bond score that Barry composed for Roger Moore as Bond. Moore at this point was trying to define his own interpretation of the character. Moore actually tried to reverse his performance from LIVE AND LET DIE, this time delivering his version of James Bond as a more stoic 007 within a script full of comedic trappings. Added to this director Guy Hamilton wanted an even lighter score than he had previously pressed John Barry into delivering in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Considering all these factors, what we get is probably the most unique score from the James Bond series. Some people were pleased, some were not and some were indifferent. I happen to enjoy this CD quite a bit. It sounds great, having the same technical qualities the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER album has, and it really contains quite a bit of the background score which you can never get enough of from any James Bond album. I really enjoy the main title that Barry composed for THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN. Lulu's vocal renditions are strong but the really power of this composition is demonstrated in the many instrumental variations that Barry composes using this theme. "Goodnight Goodnight" and "In Search of Scaramanga's Island" are very beautiful sounding tracks. Also, if you like the James Bond theme, Barry composed whole new variations utilizing the power of the orchestra giving the theme a whole new dimension and sound. You can hear these on "Chew Me in Grisly Land" and "Let's Go Get 'Em." All in all I think this is a great sounding album. It is well presented and balanced and is a good representation of the music heard in the film. It was a shame they could not find more music as they did for THUNDERBALL, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, OHMSS and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. I still like this one just the same.

2 out of 5 stars John Barry's worst entry in the Bond series..........2004-01-19

Maybe it's just me, but I think 'The Man With The Golden Gun' was truly a sign that Barry was getting tired of arranging Bond film scores, especially after coming out with the magnificent 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and 'Diamonds Are Forever' as his latest contributions prior to this 1974 entry. Perhaps the storyline had much to do with it, but the music here is uninspiring, the theme song not one of my favorites and as others have pointed out, lacking in any extra tracks.

If there is one remastered CD to potentially avoid it is this one, but Barry would make another wonderful effort 5 years later with 'Moonraker'

4 out of 5 stars Haunting score by the magnificent John Barry!.......2003-04-07

The Man With The Golden Gun is not one of the better films in the series. One however, cannot say the same about the music. While it is not considered to be the best work of John Barry, it is still good. The new CD has been remastered, but due to money restrains, no new bonus tracks have been added. The inner booklet has also been spiced up to include a few nice photos. The Man With The Golden Gun was performed by Lulu. It was one of the very few title tracks that didn't chart at all in the US or Britain. True that her voice was a little off and the lyrics are odd, but it is still a fine song. John Barry brought a far east flavor to the music that works very well in the film and on the CD. Scaramanga's Funhouse has the tension slow brass in it as does Return To Scaramanga's Funhouse, which is slightly longer and haunting. These tracks also include the honky-tonk interludes in them. Hip's Trip is a wonderful track that has a dark moody fell to it and works ver well. The Jazz Instrumental The Man With The Golden Gun is a Dixieland honky-tonk blast of crazy music and sounds in a fun rendition of the title song. This track is not featured in the film. My personal favorite and many others on the CD is In Search Of Scaramanga's Island. It is filled with a mysterious fell to it and a far eastern flavor. Very haunting and full of riveting tension. The CD ends with the end-title version of the title song in a much slower tempo. All in all, The Man With The Golden Gun is a good James Bond soundtrack filled with 12 wondeful tracks. A must for all Bond fans!

Berlin's Jazzanova are world-champion programmers, turning extreme technical skills into astonishing electro funk Muzak. Why it takes six grown men to make this music is a mystery, but in classic German style, the results are sleek, efficient, and intelligent. With tripped-up funk beats as their base, Jazzanova adorn detailed, shifting arrangements on In Between with various vocalists (Ursula Rucker, Capitol A) to intimate styles as diverse as Sergio Mendes's Brazilian sophistication, nu-electro, breakbeat hip-hop, and retro jazz fusion. Jazzanova's attempt at smooth soul music falls flat, but by and large, their fertile songs and staggering studio skills make In Between a landmark of the nu-jazz genre (along with recent albums by Koop and Cinematic Orchestra). Highlights include the Daft Punk-meets-Earth, Wind & Fire collision of "Mwela, Mwela"; the simmering street funk of "Another New Day"; and the oozing synthesizer color-forms of "Soon." Sampling and spinning nu-jazz dreams for dancers and listeners alike, Jazzanova educate while they entertain. --Ken Micallef

    3 1/2 stars

Impressive release from the usually remixing dj collective ranges from their peak uptempo instrumentals, to more middleground soul experimentation, to party rappers. While some of the compositions do lack distinct direction, even with one or two embarrassing miscalculations, this is a triumph of architecture of an accessible nature-the groups secret weapon being there ability to take any song and warp it into some pretty noticeable ear candy. Outstanding production, if a little too attentive for it's chilled pace, at the album's best there is a spectacular fusion of electronic elements that emulate so much further all of the fun and sociable aspects dance music has provided. It is sad these detailed and melodic twitchscapes do not reside more in our (american) club culture, because the laborious programming could dictate some serious workouts for any avowed semi-attentive dancehead.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Reich tripped out on Funk.......2005-06-26

I love this stuff--a LOT of very interesting and unusual ways of approaching the genre. Definitely jazz, definitely trip-hop, definitely engaging. Some of the tracks are a little too R&B for my taste (vocals only so-so, too), but if you like Tosca, Thievery Corporation, dZihan & Kamien, Koop, etc., you'll be into this.

    4 out of 5 stars Jazza-Luva.......2004-11-11

I really like this cd, although I will agree with some of the reviews about the Ursula Rucker psuedo-rap that really didn't need to be included. It starts out with quiet sampling and turns into an explosive of lush and exotic riffs. One of the outstanding pieces of jazz on here is #5 Hanazono, followed by Mwela,Mwela (Here I Am) featuring one of the strongest vocalists around Valerie Etienne. I love the 'off key' vocal stylings of #12 Dance the Dance, and unlike another reviewer, I really got into 'Takes You Back'. I believe it was made not to be 'perfect', just a little off kilter. Well, that's it for me. I love this cd and I have made it a gift to several friends. If you love Jazzanova, this is a buy!

5 out of 5 stars quite an achievement.......2004-10-28

I don't know what some of you people are smoking, but this stuff is great. I am familiar with some of the nu jazz stuff out there (Koop, Cinematic Orchestra, Ninja Tune in general...) as well as a little jungle/d&b and various forms of IDM and turntablism/sample collage. I am also an avid jazz listener/performer, so I can tell when someone is ripping off jazz and doesn't know what they're doing (which some djs do a lot). I got this Jazzanova CD a couple years ago and it remains one of the bright spots in my collection. Why is that? Well, i will tell you why.

You can mostly tell why by listening to the first song. It opens up quietly, with some samples spliced together to suggest some very original chords and something of a melody. The fragmented, stuttering, but still funk rooted drums come in. (Throughout the album, the drums can get very thick and complicated and cool but never go the way of d&b by doing things that sound completely artificial or mechanical.) The main theme of the song trades off with varying companion sections before it pauses, modulates, and goes into 9/8, making way for a literate vibes solo. The composition ends up being something a modern jazz musician would have been proud to have written, with a solo that is by no means simplistic.

Througout the album, the collective uses modern chords and slightly angular but still beautiful melodies to create a standard trip hop/nu jazz mood, utilizing a wide variety of vocalists and even including spoken word artist Ursula Rucker (along with a mediocre rapper). The sonic backdrops are never static or standard; the most standard song is No Use, but it is too beautiful to dislike. There are a few worthy instrumental guests as well, who usually get the most complex of the compositions. There are some interludes too, but they are not too bad.

The only missteps would be the bassline on Soon (which got remixed several times on the remix cd), and the almost unhip sheen of Takes You Back, but overall the cd is extremely tasteful, including the sensibilites of sample collagers like the Avalanches or Madlib, the harmonic knowledge of modern jazz musicians, the beat knowledge of any modern electronic act, and the vocal talents of any quality R&B act of the past decade. You owe it to all 8 of these guys to at least check it out.

I must first thank Amazon for its insightful recommendations. Sometimes it is a little creepy. That is how I got turned on to Jazzanova and the mind blowing tracks on this great cd. I have been following the "nu" path of jazz and have to admit this cd has opened my horizons to what jazz can really be. Each track has been thought through and nothing is left out. It is hard to put into words what you hear. So, with comparisons maybe I can clue you in. Are you into the likes of Nuspirit, early Groove Collective, or Cinematic Orchestra? If not, what about Micatone, Fauna, or Beanfield? Hum, well don't let these comparisons help make a decision for you. Just go ahead and buy it, give it several plays, and then make the decision for yourself. Money well spent.

Just the ultra rare Aphex Twin track #19 (aka "Stone in Focus") is worth the price of admission on this Astralwerks compilation. The only other place this is available on the limited 10,000 brown vinyl pressing of Selected Ambient Works II. It is missing from the SAW II CD release.

Okay, I pull this out of the CD case only to hear the 10th track, called, "No. 19" by Aphex Twin. It's a slow, simple sad ambient track, with a beautiful warm analog synthesizer sound that keeps repeating in a wonderfully soft way. Must be heard to be appreciated.

I'm one of those Aphex Twin fans from when he FIRST STARTED (I almost have ALL of his releases, even the vinyl only stuff he did under pseudonyms...) and even though I applaud where he's taken his sound (check out Come to Daddy EP and the Drukqs album) I find myself skipping past most of the harder stuff to appreciate his soft, ambient stuff.

BONUS FACT: This track, "No. 19" was before only accessible on the Aphex Twin album titled: Selected Ambient Works 2. But the CD doesn't have this track it's only on the VINYL IMPORT release (Warp records) - that's why it doesn't have a name because all of the releases on SAW2 were not named, they instead have pictures that he named them with, on the inside sleeve of the cd (like Mr. Eno used to do...)

So the only other release with this is THIS CD, "Excursions in Ambience 3". Get it & feel lucky you found this brilliant beutiful track!

This CD is not supposed to be techno, or anything of the like. Remember when you were younger, and you used to assosiate sounds and songs with experiences/situations? Or do you still? This is the CD for that. Also, there are some songs, that you can listen to over and over again, and not get bored of. Its a great CD, and one that I reccomend. I hope you like it!

      Album Description

The genre-defining Death in Vegas was born out of the London club scene and formed as a studio project by Richard Fearless in 1996. Pumping out audio adrenaline that mixes Hip Hop, samples and heavy music, the result after two years was the group's first album, Dead Elvis. Their single "Dirt" became a MTV hit later that year.

Death in Vegas teams up with Fabric Records to bring you Fabric Live 23, condensed to best represent the band's sets at Fabric nightclub's legendary Friday night parties.

Fabric Live 23 contains four exclusive edits of Death in Vegas tracks blended with the most cutting-edge techno around to include tracks by Solvent, Alex Smoke, Mathew Jonson, and Cybotron.

      5 out of 5 stars A perfect mix!.......2006-12-08

I think this is a perfect mix. The song selection is great and tight! I have to admit that I was hesitant to purchase this at first because i really don't care for these dj compilations. I find them dull and pointless. But I've been a fan of Death In vegas' original music for years now and decided to give it a chance especially since i got my copy at the tower records going out of business sale!
All i can really say is that if you're into interesting electronic music then this is for you!

      5 out of 5 stars A brilliant mix set.......2006-01-24

Having not bought many mix CDs, I heard this in Tower and immediately bought it. It's such an interesting blend between techno, house industrial and old skool electro. It blends so well that it is almost the perfect mix album. I say almost because the mixing of tracks is not as fluid as can be heard on say Laurent Garnier's superb Excess Luggage. A few of the tracks just seem to introduce themselves unannounced from out of nowhere and while that in itself is no bad thing, particularly when the songs are good, it does tend to be a little jarring. But this should be essential to not just Death in Vegas fans but electro fans as well. But then they could be one and all really.

The label that first brought DJ Krush to U.S. attention, New York's Shadow Records intends to "push the envelope of the indie sound past the place where hip-hop, abstrakt, ambient, alternative, and electronica collide." This 14-track compilation meets that criterion with groovable enigmas: DJ Cam's scary-pretty Hindu-hop cut "Lost Kingdom," Diferenz's jazz-hop swirl on "Poppin' Ya Head," Da Germ's piano-and-turntable collage "Physical Chemistry," and Sharpshooters' fey Euro-rap on "Spirits Unseen." The American arm of Britain's progressive Ninja Tune label, Shadow lacks a single artist as visionary as Ninja's Amon Tobin or DJ Vadim, but its organic trip-hop aesthetic--part slacker, part beatnik, part B-Boy--comes through with all the clarity of a Miles Davis horn blast on this cool collection. --James Rotondi

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good but there are better.......2001-07-30

I liked this CD for what it was worth. I don't think I would really consider it ambient, but it is a decent chillout cd - albeit a little more poppy than the norm. Armand Van Helden is here, as are St Etienne, Nightmares on Wax, Fatboy Slim and a couple of others.

The second issue in this series is actually a bit darker and more in the Euphoric mode. But if you're looking for good chillout with traditional bands, I'd say stick to "The Chillout Mix", or "The Chillout Album"s. Those are the middle of the table. This one is more light and more upbeat. And for the hardcore chillout/ambient fans, I would say go towards the Euphoria/BMG series, like Breakdown for starters and then Deep & Chilled.

5 out of 5 stars title says it all.......2000-12-16

I have a huge selection of club related music and this CD stands out as a very smooth, very stylish collection of tracks that make you want to enjoy life. Its one of the best CDs you can play for great backgound music while doing just about anything.

Its not heart pounding beats but contains very melodic selections from some of the hottest names. Come on - St. Etienne, Cafe Del Mar, Primal Scream, and the Orb - this CD kicks.

          1 out of 5 stars Absolutely worthless.......2000-12-08

I bought this CD because of 'Nightmares-on-Wax' and I must say that the two numbers they produce are about the best this cd has to offer. The rest is pure JUNK. Despite of other reviews on this product that makes you think that this is greatest 'Chill Out' you come across (that's the reason I bought it in the first place, it will not happen again) don't buy this until you have a good idea what's on it. It's very commercial and non inspiring.

          5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2000-06-22

If you buy only one CD this year, let this be it. The perfect answer to the problem of what to get the person who has everything. Good for background music for conversation, parties, dinner, Sunday afternoon, Saturday night, after a hard day, to wake up to, while on the phone, while cooking, doing errands, dancing, working in a restaurant or store, drinking, getting ready to go out, and, WHATEVER! A great mix! 32 songs to help you shake the cobwebs out and just do what life is all about! Who couldn't like this? Soak in the tub! Pour yourself something cold! Is it the weekend yet?

5 out of 5 stars wandering around lost.......1999-12-22

Rythmic, relaxing chillout grooves. Not bang-bang but teriffic sound, that stands out in its quality and creation. After techno, house a.s.f. this the next kind of music that you can hear anytime and just enjoy it whatever you do.
