beautiful Irish music.......2007-07-06
Dolores Keane has a very rich, soothing voice. "Storm In my Heart" is beautiful, could listen to this song over and over. "Never Be the Sun" "Solid Ground" and "I Courted a Soldier" are very good as well. If you like relaxing, Irish music, listen to this CD. You will not be dissapointed!
Wonderfull.......2006-01-15
Dolores is special! I found out that she's from Galway! I've been there in 2004. A journey through Ireland was very wonderfull - Dolores as all Irish singers and music are special, moving and unforgettable. Her voice is very deep and the music's strong!
Solid Ground.......2001-12-07
I have most of Dolores Keane's music and I love all of it. The music from this album that I am particularly fond of is "Emigrant Eyes", "The Summer of My Dreams", "Solid Ground", "Nothing to Show" and "Finer Things".
"Solid Ground" is solid all the way through.......1998-09-26
I first heard Dolores Keane's outstanding song "Storm in My Heart" on a Celtic CD collection, so I decided to give "Solid Ground" a try. I am happy that I did: this album is wonderfully listenable, and Keane sings with a voice that is both moving and enchanting. She does a fine version of Steve Winwood's "The Finer Things." Like all the songs on the CD, it's sung with the warmth and heart that is the hallmark of excellent Celtic music.

Possibly Carlton's best Electric recording.......2002-12-01
I haven't heard everything that Carlton's done, but I do own most of it. For those (like me) who too often find most of this music sorely lacking and getting mired in tired R'and B' grooves that have no sense of dynamics and wear out their welcome long before the tune is over, then this is a fine exception. Matter of fact this album, along with 1986's "Alone//But Not Alone" (where Carlton sticks to acoustic guitar for the entire recording)I would rate as the only 2 "must have's" of his output so far.
Carlton may have been inspired by his famous brush with death just before this recording, who knows, but it certainly shows here in a beautiful, lyrical way. His playing still shows signs of the fusion style that he was originally known for, but the writing is more mature and many of the themes are quite beautiful and expressive. Oddly, though, the recording starts off with the weakest track "Josie" which sounds pretty much like everything else from this genre and isn't going to win anybody over except those already into this type of "all groove and no substance" type of piece. On the other side, I think the best Carlton peace EVER is on here, "Sea Space", and no "Best Of" compilation is complete without this tune (naturally they missed putting "Sea Space" on either "Collection" volumes 1 or 2!). Usually when you see a cover version of a well known tune (in this case "Layla") it's usually a sign of the leader grasping for material (and radio play)due to lack of inspiration, but, again, thankfully, that is not the case here, it actually works. Sure there are a couple of those R'andB' grooves that could easily make one put this in the same catagory as the thousands of other recordings of this type (including the by-the-book saxophone solo in "All in Good Time" which the player could probably have done in his sleep), but these are thankfully saved by the incredible recorded sound, and the keyboards (the wonderful Alan Pasqua and Terry Trotter) which really give most of the recording a sense of depth and beauty, often functioning kind of as a backround orchestral pallette (as is most evident on "Sea Space").
All in all this could have been better with maybe replacing the tired sounding saxophone solos with a real Jazz sax player (anybody from Charlie Mariano to Tom Scott would work better), but all in all, I would pick this up along with 1986's "Alone/But Not Alone" and you will have the best of Carlton in both the electric and acoustic worlds.
Listening to this makes you happy to be alive.......1999-12-14
An electric album this time, with gorgeous, soaring melodies (On Solid Ground), fun, infectuous funk (Bubble Shuffle) and a great rendition of "Layla". Every song on the album is great. Play it on a sunny Sunday afternoon, a Saturday evening, or go outside and let the wind blow through your hair. This is a convertible album - throw the top down and blast away!
A different LC this time out..........1999-10-02
An album recorded shortly after the dreadful shooting outside his 335 studio, catching Larry in a reflective mood. I saw him in concert when this album first hit the streets and it was a wonderful experience. We are lucky to have a musician like him still in our midst. Goosebump stuff....go buy it.

outta nowhere.........2005-11-20
...i find this album dropped in my lap. on a whim i went to find some good german/sveedish prog becasue i'm in love with Can and Dungen (a very good recent prog band from dish sveeden). I really didnt expect to find this. As a reference point, imagine the kinks, black sabbath and the velvet underground mixed together and make it huge, soaring and epic. add some stupid cover art and near-total obscurity and you you've got an idea of what Solid ground feels like. Immediately accessible tracks such as "that's you" and "handful of grass" jump out at you and ease you into the epics lurking within. This is a bit pricey (hey its an import) but check these guys out any way you can. it'll be a great little secret for you to impart on your bonehead steve miller/foreigner- worshipping freinds out there.

More 80's groove.......2006-02-13
I recently was given this album by a friend. I say album, because it is on a record. I must say that this album sounds great. I wish they would release it on CD. Albums like this paved the way for smooth jazz. The instruments sound great and the composition of the songs is impecable. I give this 5 stars. Truly a masterpeace in terms of the jazz format begining to come out in the 1980s.
One of his Best.......2005-12-21
As far as singing Ronnie gives us a real treat with his versatility. His sax is always mellow and a blessing to the ears. But the two tracks, 2 and 3 includesThere's a way, and Stay Awake, both are beautifully written and performed. It is ashame that Heavy on Easy and either There's a way or Stay awake are not on his Greatest hits CD. Along with Friends and Lovers, and Every Generation, these are the songs that set Ronnie apart from other artists Jazz or otherwise.
Solid Ground Indeed.......2005-08-01
Once upon a time in the early 80's there was no such thing as smooth jazz. And when lighter hearted fusion was made it tended to have a far more diverse range of colors.Ronnie Laws comes from that older school of lite funk-jazz musicians who enjoyed some hefty R&B flavor in their music."Solid Ground" is definately more of a funky R&B album then anything jazzy but it has those nice 80's keyboards and on the title track and "Your Stuff" Mr.Laws is a damn good singer as well,no George Benson but certainly no Stanley Clarke on the mic lol.And for an album of this type, this vintage IT SOUNDS GOOD!No question about it.It is very well produced and poppy in many parts but if you know anything about my musical tastes it fits right into that framework. If you like the early 80's work of Jeff Lorber,Paul Hardcastle and George Duke you will likely find music to your liking here.
Truly a Masterpiece.......2004-08-17
I remember this album from when my mother used to clean the house on the weekends, and ever since it has became an essential part of my life. This album is the most well balanced by Ronnie Laws, other than the out of print "Every Generation". This album so be the textbook example of what saxophone jazz is to sound like. Amongst the albums highlights are "Your Stuff" (which features his brother Hubert on the flute), "Heavy On Easy", and "Good Feelings" (which features his sisters Debra and Eloise as backing vocals). Overall, you will not be disappointed
YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS.......2003-03-06
I don't do many reviews; this might be my first or second, but listen up -- buy this CD. This is probably the best work from Ronnie Laws to date and the entire CD focuses around the latter period of Jazz (This was originally released in vinyl in the late '70's) where funk, R&B/soul and jazz came together in one piece of work. In my opinion, I would not equate this with smooth jazz -- this CD's texture and groove is well beyond that. 'Stay Awake' is one of the songs on the CD that makes you want to open your favorite bottle, curl up in the chaise with your woman (or man, however that applies) or yourself and just vibe. Not many dull moments to be found on this CD. If you know anyone who needs an introduction to modern jazz, this is the one to get

Amazing CD!.......2007-07-07
This is a masterpiece! I can't believe it hasn't gotten more notice. One of my favorite releases this year. Howard is in top form, and the musical styles offset his vocals brilliantly. It's also great to hear some originals by Tate as well. The album is a broad reflection of his life story and I found that aspect very moving.

I can't take this CD out of my CD player, honestly i've made a copy for my car and a copy for my room. It is possibly one of the best pop-punk cd's i've ever heard. If you're into NFG, Midtown, The Starting Line or any other punk/pop bands, get into knockout. Their from my hometown and I've supported them since the last CD they had out "Driven To Distraction". After i heard that Cd i thought that their next CD could not match up... somehow, its better. Download a few tracks from MP3.com, and then buy the CD its awesome and it will not let you down.
