About the Artist
It is a simple objective really; create music to reflect the emotion of a specific time and space.
Karmacoda was launched as a collective effort between two musicians in search of a new way to achieve their artistic and musical vision. It all began over drinks in a San Francisco tiki bar when Heather Pierce and Brett "B." Crockett realized their mutual electronica/trip-hop obsession.
B. immediately asked Heather to check out the electronic music project he was working on. Heather was enthralled with what she heard and in B's home studio recorded her first vocal ideas. The result was the hauntingly beautiful track "Frail", featured on their first album "Reco mended". Karmacoda was officially underway.
The summer 2001 release of "Reco mended" garnered an overwhelming, positive response and a surprised Karmacoda began receiving inquiries as to when the new group would perform live. Because Karmacoda began primarily as a studio project, the challenges and limitations of playing the material live were not a primary concern during writing and recording. Heather and B. soon started work on creating a live show. B. called upon friend and San Francisco bassist Brian Templeton. Brian, already a fan of the music, eagerly joined them in rehearsals. To maintain maximum sonic flexibility and remain true to their new sound, what the band ideally needed was a DJ possessing a strong musical sensibility and who was comfortable spinning alongside other live musicians. It seemed almost karmic as B. soon met DJ Rafael Acevedo, also looking to become involved in a group like Karmacoda.
After the first rehearsal with B., Heather, Brian and Rafael, it was obvious to all that the core unit of the band had been found. Mixing Rafael's skilled turntablism, Brian's hypnotic bass lines, B. doubling on guitar/keyboard with the interlocking, soaring vocals of both Heather and B., the vibe was immediately palpable. Karmacoda's live shows quickly became popular throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, grabbing the attention of local promoters and clubs and a burgeoning fan base. By integrating live VJ AJ, who creates real-time custom video projection, the band's musical vision is not only heard but literally seen.
Karmacoda's second disc "Evidence", which expanded on the evolution of the groups, was released to glowing reviews in August of 2003 and continued the growth of the bands attention and fan base.
Karmacodas new album "Altered Evidence: Late Night Remixes", released May 3rd 2004, is a collection of remixed tracks inspired by songs from Karmacoda's their second release, "Evidence", and features local, and internationally acclaimed DJs and Remixers DJ Polywog & Frogger, Tyler Stone, DJ Amber & Russ Arteaga, DJ Rafael Acevedo and Den Jones. The compilation was conceived by Karmacoda and the DJs as an exciting way to feature established and emerging musical talent in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Expressing very human issues and emotions through very processed sound is what Karmacoda does best. The perfect aural escape from our ultra-commercialized planet.
Product Description
You know a band is doing something right when chart-topping international DJs like Polywog and Tyler Stone remix their songs. It's even more impressive when word spreads regarding a new remix compilation, exciting other established and up-and-coming DJs around the world to get involved with the project.
Karmacoda's newest release, "Altered Evidence: Late Night Remixes" is an undeniably groove-centric collection of remixed tracks inspired by songs on their second album, "Evidence". More than just a retelling of what the band has done in the past, "Altered Evidence" is refreshingly different: a hot, danceable departure from their lush trip-hop roots, with most of the tracks initially unrecognizable from their original forms.
What does remain are the intense, unmistakable vocals of Karmacoda singers Heather Pierce and B., which on tracks like DJ Polywog's "If You and I (Where You Sleep)" and Chimerical Child's remix of "All that Depth", stand out with amazing new shine and emotion. Karmacoda's own DJ Rafael also kicks up the vibe, showing off his ingenuity on the beat heavy, "Masta Plan Remix". "Altered Evidence" fluctuates through engaging dance sub-genres like a slick, freedom-filled night out in the city, rising and falling in just the right places.
