There's no sophomore slump for Miranda Lambert, who follows her chart-topping debut, Kerosene, with a knockout punch. Both the title cut and the album-opening "Gunpowder & Lead" ("what little girls are made of") show that Lambert hasn't lost her edge or her appetite for revenge. Yet the quieter "Desperation," the more tuneful and tender "Love Letters," the wistful "More Like Her," and the primally intense "Down" show her emotional range and maturity. While her songwriting remains a strength, Lambert also displays superb taste in other people's material, with "Dry Town" (by Gillian Welch), "Getting Ready" (a new song from Patty Griffin), and "Easy from Now On" (with the lyric that provided the title to Emmylou Harris's classic Quarter Moon in a Ten-Cent Town) reinforcing the musical quality. There isn't a throwaway cut here. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Fine country album.......2007-07-23
Miranda Lambert's main claim to fame came from her surprise 2005 hit country single, "Kerosene". Sure, she was on Nashville Star, but she was third, not the winner and as all of these reality music artist shows have shown despite being on television to have staying power, you STILL have to prove yourself. This statement is most crystal clear on a show like Nashville star as most of it's winners have failed to have staying power and have failed to go truly noticed in the industry of country itself. Sure, first season winner Buddy Jewell had moderate success, but that success didn't add up to a gold album and Erika Jo, the youngest winner at that point stayed on the Billboard Albums Chart a couple of weeks before falling off. Miranda debuted stronger than Erika Jo (#18 as opposed to #27) for her first album, but it wasn't until "Kerosene" that Miranda secured a hit gold album. As to whether CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (which debuted at #6 with 53,000 copies) can give Miranda superstar status, or probably more attainable a second gold album minimally can only be told by time, but where quality is concerned, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND is one of country's best albums of 2007 anyway you cut it. People can praise Carrie Underwood as much as they want to, but Miranda Lambert is just as much if not more in some respects the real thing as Ms. Underwood, no matter if the sales of these two respective, respectable artists beg to differ.
The album has no misses, which seems to be a trend I've noticed with country music. Rarely does country music have filler material in comparison to rock, pop, or urban music; it tends to have an added consistency that the other genres have never been able to secure. "Gunpowder & Lead" gets the album started off right with 'country-centric' production work and a great vocal by Lambert. "Dry Town" features an even more polished vocal by Ms. Lambert and the spare production during the verses allows for Lambert's beautiful vocals to shine. My only quibble with this track is that the refrain is a bit overproduced. One could argue that the great ending of this particular track makes up for any flaws or idiosyncrasies and I believe that assertion would be nearly accurate. Finally, the most commended track of the first three and wonderful choice for a single, "Famous In A Small Town" shows Lambert vocally at her best, equally where her diction, timbre, and tone are concerned. There's exceptional instrumental work here and the production overall has less 'twang' to it, which is perfect for this track. Three for three and going strong Ms. Lambert.
"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is a strong track, but it's thunder is stolen from the greater proceeding track "Love Letters" in which everything within the setting is nearly perfect. Lambert's vocals are pure, the orchestration is immaculate, and the lyrics so heartfelt and touching. Now that's what music is supposed to be! "Desperation" is the weakest track as of yet, though it is above-par by all means. "More Like Her" picks up the slack being in the top echelon of the best tracks of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND. Traces of organ and an inescapable country-soul feel build up this track to be one of the best. Even more important, the songwriting is top-rate by all means.
"Down" is a standout because of the 'grit' that Lambert achieves here. The songwriting is once again brilliant and only enhanced by Lambert's powerhouse vocals, particularly during the refrain. "Guilty In Here", "Getting Ready", and final track "Easy From Now" are all strong and make CRAZY EX- the successful affair that it is. Particularly in "Easy From Now" the pedal-steel lace timbre and the laid-back tempo and stunning vocals make it a fine way to end a very, VERY fine country album. Overall, I think that if Miranda Lambert can truly break through the numerous other country artists and continue to seperate herself the way that she already has, she should have a lengthy and fruitful recording career. 4 stars and high recommendation from me.
Awesome CD!.......2007-07-20
I think Miranda hit the jackpot with this CD!! It is really good. Even the slower songs on it are wonderful. There is an even mix of sweet innocent country girl and the girl who wants revenge!
GREAT ALBUM.......2007-07-02
I was not a Miranda Lambert fan prior to this album. There is something about the songs on this album that make it Awesome. I think it is all of the songs that relate to everyday life and different circumstances people find themselves in. I especially like the first song on the album Gunpowder and Lead! You will like it too!
CRAZY Like A Fox!!.......2007-06-29
O.K., I'll be honest....upon my first few listens of Miranda Lambert's sophomore effort, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, I was....dare I say it?!?...disappointed. Oh, sure, it was still obvious that this woman was meant to be a star, but something was just missing, and I wasn't sure what. Was it the sense of innocence, joy and "Hey, Mom, I'm making a record!!" that permeated her excellent 2005 debut KEROSENE? I wasn't sure. However, after repeated spins, I started seeing the disc in a new light. True, the charming naivete of the first album was still pretty much nowhere to be found, but another stunning quality had reared it's artistic head to take it's place. I know I'm going out on a limb here when I say this, but, as she continues to mature, Lambert could very well be the Emmylou Harris of her generation. Like that grande dame of Country, Lambert already has, and is brilliantly honing, the innate ability to hop from genre to genre, style to style, without it ever seeming forced, clumsy or uncomfortable. Things kick off with the sassy "Gunpowder & Lead." From it's roaring guitars to it's sly lead vocal, this is the kind of cut that sets Lambert apart from the rest of the pack. Add strong lyrics ("Slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll/Don't that sound like a real man/I'm gonna show him what a little girl's made of/Gunpowder & Lead") and you start things off with - no pun intended! - a bang! From there we segue into the honky-tonk swing of David Rawlings' and Gillian Welch's "Dry Town." Amid a buoyant arrangement and effervescent lead vocal, Lambert practically kicks up her heels and dances thru the number! The high point? The almost giddy way she delivers the lines "I figured I'd need about a six of Miller/And one of them things so I wouldn't spill her!" Up next is "Famous In A Small Town", the first of four songs once again co-written with fellow Nashville Star alum Travis Howard (why hasn't a label signed this guy?!?). Along with it's easy groove and relaxed lead vocal, "Famous...." stands out for another reason; it seems as if every young country artist today HAS TO include a song about how wonderful it is growing up in a small town. Thankfully, Lambert puts a different spin on it, and the results come across as fresh and clever instead of trite and cliched. The disc's title track is one of the album's few missteps....the arrangement is just too busy and, both lyrically and vocally, Lambert comes across as somewhat of a poseur, like she's trying too hard (though I do love the line "'Cause baby to a hammer everything looks like a nail"). Far superior is the delicate weeper "Love Letters." There's a classic country sway to this Lambert original that's equal parts hopeful and heartbroken. Nothing ornate, the cut is simple, yet elegant. From it's opening line of "Throw a dog a bone, I'll take it if I have to", there's a quiet....well, desperation!....to "Desperation." Backed by a subdued arrangement and a plaintive lead vocal, it's lines such as "What's the use of standing right there on the edge if there ain't no where to fall", "Complicated words slipping off of your tongue and ain't one of them the truth" and "Well it's too damn bad you didn't have a chance to make me your best friend" that prove just what a strong writer Lambert truly is. Lyrically speaking, "Desperation" is CRAZY's strongest cut. A real winner! Right behind it, though, is the tender "More Like Her." Sort of a sequel to KEROSENE's "Greyhound Bound For Nowhere", Lambert's heart is on her sleeve - it can't be easy being "the other woman"....it must be a TOTAL drag to actually respect and/or admire your competition as well! Gorgeous....simply gorgeous! There's some nice finger-pickin' going on throughout "Down", but, overall, the track comes across as somewhat faked and forced. It's all attitude and image, with very little content. We all KNOW Lambert is a bad-a**....continually TELLING us just lessens the effect! On the flipside, there's a sense of fun and a high energy level to "Guilty In Here" that feels earthy and natural. The instrumentation crackles with a tight, propulsive groove, while Lambert's spirited lead vocal wraps around clever lyrics ("But that boy's like a sore in your mouth that you just have to bite"). Smart and smooth, "Guilty In Here" is a good time, plain and simple! Another of the album's high points is Lambert's cover of Patty Griffin's "Getting Ready." Edgy and intense, this alt-country number has the same kind of lively vibe found on Emmylou Harris' take on Griffin's "One Big Love." Amidst slightly skewered guitars and a hypnotic chorus, Lambert alternates between spitting the words out and purring them (just listen to the lines "I know all the magic's gone/Wish I had a magic wand/I would put a spell on you/You would see it as I do"). To quote another line....."Oh baby baby!!!" Get this on the radio....NOW!! Things wrap up with Lambert's sweet, soulful and sexy take on Carlene Carter's and Susanna Clark's lovely "Easy From Now On." Simple, yet satisfying, it closes the album on a subdued, classy note. And that's a good way to describe Miranda Lambert herself....a class act who is living up to the "Star" potential....both "Nashville" and otherwise!....promised when she first hit the scene four years ago. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND proves once again that, A) you don't always have to win to be a/the winner, and B) Miss Lambert is here to stay (As with all my reviews, I'm giving the disc an extra half a star for including the lyrics).

This compilation may not sport many well-known artists or quickly recognizable songs (with the exception of Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy," Chad Fisher's straightforward cover of "Oye Como Va," and Eskimos of Love's take on Split Enz's "I Got You"), but it contains enough interesting nuggets to make it worth looking into. Opening track "No Sleep 2nite" is a prime example. You may not have heard of Molly McQueen (unless you're a Britophile familiar with her former band, the short-lived Faders) but her song is a super-catchy, Motown-influenced stomper. (It's reprised at the end in a different mix.) Likewise, the Magic Numbers" "Love Is a Game" unfurls with a lazy grace and Teitur (a soft-spoken troubadour born in the remote Faroe Islands) offers the romantic ballad "One & Only." This CD doesn't have much in a stylistic or thematic sense, but it does have a few good, underexposed tunes. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Another great soundtrack........2006-08-14
Each songs are really good but I don't understand why it's said that no sleep 2nite is sung by Molly MCqueen and not the Faders (is the band seperated?!).Anyway even if I already knew the song it was a nice way to start the compilation with (but the remix was a little unnecessary).Rachel Robinson's rescue me song is defenatly one of my favorites along with love is a game, one and only, lover come up,love love love and I got you.It was also fun to have two hits on the CD (a recent and an oldy),the joker and she drives me crazy. So if you are into romantic comedy soundtrack style, this one's made for you.Let's hope the movie is as good as it is.
Rescue Me!.......2006-08-01
Upbeat and heartwarming, each song has a purpose on this soundtrack. There are fun and upbeat songs, and there are songs that are sad. This soundtrack is pretty simular to the Legally Blonde original soundtrack. There are also cool romance songs, which mixes this soundtrack perfectly; happy songs, sad songs, and romance songs, so this soundtrack creates a great variety to the listener. I like each song on this soundtrack, them all being worth the listen to. But, some songs on the soundtrack are from other soundtracks; "No Sleep 2nite" from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants original soundtrack, and "One and Only" from Aquamrine original soundtrack, giving you a clear idea of how them soundtracks are by listening to them. This soundtrack is missing some songs though, disappointing...

2. Rescue Me _ Rachel Robinson 5/5 (Favorite)
3. The Joker _ Fatboy Slim featuring Bootsy Collins 5/5

Interesting..........2006-03-19
The string tribute is, of course, not meant to substitute for the originals, but as a No Doubt fan I found the "classical" versions fun and a stimulating alternative. I can put No Doubt albums on repeat and rock out, but it's always great to hear remixes, covers, and different versions of a favorite artist.
I suggest you visit an independent music store or someplace you can better sample the album, rather than rely on the clips. If not, I would recommend the tribute to pretty solid No Doubt fans and to those interested in some refreshing classical music.
hum..........2005-06-08
some of the songs are alright, don't speak and simple kind of life aRE incredible. hella good and hey baby were a bad choice i think cos they are a bit repetitive when done on a string instument. im a little confused about vague moment..is that a no doubt song?
Good, Depending On Your Taste.......2004-11-17
I know that some people were very disappointed with this CD; I wasn't, but maybe that's just because I am a tried-and-true No Doubt fan- I find it thrilling to hear different renditions of my favorite songs. Yes, some songs hang on the precipice of being tacky, especially the faster ones, like "Hella Good", and, in some ways, "Hey Baby". However, I think some work quite well. Obviously, all the original songs are better, but sometimes I get in a dramatic, classical-music mood, and this CD is awesome. "Ex-Girlfriend" sounds deliciously devious and dark with the deep string instruments, and "Don't Speak", like its original, is so heart-rendingly beautiful it'll pull at your heartstrings.
Overall, take care. I think the CD is well-made, with a good instrumentalists and fine arrangements, but I can understand how it would put some people off. But don't knock it till you give it a listen. And best of all- it's instant kareoke!
Ha ha! Surely it's a joke! What? It isn't?!.......2004-09-18
When I listened to these clips, I cracked up. This is so bad it's funny, kind of like reality TV. If you want a laugh, try this CD. If you want music, I suggest you buy a REAL No Doubt album. No offense if you like chamber music; but these people who did this pathetically bad album have ruined it forever.
Innovative, trendy, sexy and fantastic!.......2004-07-07
I can add a lot more words to the list; motivating, romantic, provacative, eluring, brilliant.... This is GREAT! I love the idea this company has of putting out string quartet versions of your favorite artists. But this CD is marvelous. I got it last week and it is my favorite CD in my collection. A fine tribute indeed. Congratulations to this group for such a fabulous tribute.

Hey I bought an import!.......2000-08-28
Now if you know me when I like a band I just buy the CD. I never get any imports, or anything that dosen't fit my budget but when I saw this had two songs I've never heard before, I jumped to it. The Single Ex-girlfriend (which I already loved) is definatly a real girl-powered song and Full Circle and Big Distraction are great songs. Once again No Dobut performs to the best of there ability and shows us how awsome they can be. If you're a fan buy this Import!
Never thought I'de say that one.

Grooved out. Is the best way to describe No Doubt's Ex-Girlfriend #2 - Import. This cd consists of three songs - Ex-girlfriend ( of course ) and Circle. These three songs make this cd a great purchase. Big Distraction's sound and vibe is reminiscent of Beacon Street. While Full Circle is more along the lines of No Doubt's newer material and boasts an awesome electronic/dancehall intro ( I was very surprised that this song won't be on Return of Saturn.) As far as the difference between imports 1 & 2 go. Ex-Girlfriend #1 features the song and video for ex. plus one exclusive track entitled Leftovers. Whereas #2 has the aforementioned two songs. So, if this release is any indication (and it is to me) Return of Saturn is definitely going to be well worth the wait.
