Product Description

WHISKY SUPPER, is our fifth CD, “ALMOST LIVE” the companion to BANGER FOR BREAKFAST. We have found that our live recordings seem to really capture who we are, musically and dynamically. On this recording, we had Tyler Spencer re-record the didgeridoo parts - hence ALMOST LIVE. We are an interactive band; we try to engage with our audiences so an instrument or two might get quieter or louder at some points. Don't worry, one or another of us is probably playing on someone's table or having a quick 'beverage' in the middle of a set. While you may hear the odd slip here or there, with this recording you'll feel the energy of our live show! Slainte

5 out of 5 stars Monterey Games.......2007-05-15

I first saw the Wicked Tinkers with my family at the August 2002 Monterey Games and greatly enjoyed the band. They are fabulous live. I have since bought everything that they have released. To this day my kids still ask for bagpipe music and dance about the house to it. This CD does a fair job of capturing the feel of their concert. It needs to be played LOUD (name of one of their other CDs) though to get a true feel. It is one of the best live CDs I have.

5 out of 5 stars eclectic celtic cavalcade.......2006-03-13

This CD is a great companion to the Banger For Breakfast CD, as both have very similar settings, i.e. live in front of fans in a tight atmosphere. For any fans of Irish or Scottish traditional music, this is a must have. But better yet, it's updated with what initially seems like odd pairings of instruments, like the bagpipes and the didgeridoo. Once you listen to how well those sounds plus snares, etc. meld into a wonderful set of tunes, however, you will look at Celtic music in an entirely different way. Plus, the band inserts humor and jokes, sometimes at their own expense, that gives their performances a funny and relaxed feeling. Each song is uniquely rendered but still has that familiarity that makes this genre of music so appealing. You simply can't go wrong with this one, from the nearly dirty poem to a new style Radar Love, and will quickly become a huge fan of the Tinkers. At nearly one hour in length, it will leave you wanting more. Thankfully, they have plenty more available!

Fiona Ritchie, the host of National Public Radio's popular Celtic music show The Thistle & Shamrock, says she chose tunes for Christmas Ceilidh that reminded her of the village holiday socials she attended as a child. She must have lived in a remarkably cosmopolitan part of Scotland because along with the assortment of dance tunes and songs played by musicians like Manus McGuire, Lunasa, and Altan, the selections include "Maneo da Ulla/Foliada de Parenda" by the Spanish group Milladoiro and "Ceilidh Funk," a synth-based dance tune by the Scottish accordion player Phil Cunningham. And for a CD that prominently features the word Christmas in its title, there is almost no holiday music here at all, except for "I Saw Three Ships," a guitar solo by English guitarist John Renbourn, and the Tannahill Weavers' version of "Auld Lang Syne." Ritchie does include a nice essay about a typical Christmas ceilidh and a Dundee cake recipe in the liner notes, but overall this is one of the very few holiday CDs you can play year round. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2005-01-15

There is something about playing a disc of Celtic Christmas music that brings the whole spirit of the season closer to home; and Fiona Ritchie has done a marvellous job putting together this disc. She has picked out her favourite Green Linnet selections in order to echo the spirit of her village's Christmas Ceilidh. Fiona is the host and producer of National Public Radio's The Thistle and Shamrock, which is one of the most popular and longest running music programs on public radio in the States.

You won't find anything here to disappoint you, but much to put you in the mood for trimming the tree, wrapping gifts, and of course for baking those yummy Christmas goodies for family and friends. In fact, included is a recipe for Mrs. Walkinshaw's Dundee Cake! I'll be trying this one out next week!

With 17 different tracks and artists I could be easily driven to distraction trying to figure out which three to share with you. The entire disc is that good! So I went with one which has some familiar history, and then one of the two traditional Christmas pieces which are recognizable world-wide. And I had to choose the one which stood out above all others for the final pick. So without further ado - here we go!

Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny give us a delightful track entitled At It Again. It is a humorous tale, believe me, and nobody could deliver it like this talented artist, once the renowned vocalist for Silly Wizard. And when you join this incredible voice with the Uillean pipes, well, you have the beginnings of something compelling and passion filled! This track will bring a smile to your heart and a laugh to your lips!

John Renbourn provides a seasonal staple with I Saw Three Ships. Johnís a very gifted guitarist, and shows his stuff with this piece, embellishing the chorus with extra notes and picking the melody out quite clearly. I could sit and listen to him play for hours, but all too soon the piece is over.

The Moving Cloud by Kips Bay is the piece which leapt out and stayed in my mind with each and every listen. It is taken from a live performance, and the disc Into the Light. This group is incredibly unique, well gifted, and very diverse in its background! Front man Pat Kilbride is amazing on the guitar, as is button accordionist John Whelan. Steve Missal once played in Ted Nugent's band, and was also Billy Idol's drummer. Richard Lindsey is a stellar world beat bassist, and Kenny Landrum is a keyboardist with flying fingers! I love reels, but this one is supercharged!

This is a spectacular taste of Celtic talent and will add much to your festive spirit! From Altan to Wolfstone, you'll find it here, as well as the included tale of a village Ceilidh. Treat yourself this Christmas; you'll be glad you did!

Don't expect traditional Christmas carols here, or (unfortunately) any narrations by The Thistle & Shamrock's Fiona Ritchie, but nonetheless, this is an enjoyable collection of boisterous party music and a few wistful winter recollections from artists on the Green Linnet label. Featured is an all-star cast at their best: Altan, Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny, the House Band, Liz Carroll, Capercaillie, John Renbourn, Touchstone, Milladoiro, Phil Cunningham, Patrick Street, Cherish the Ladies, Niamh Parsons and the Loose Connections, Wolfstone, Lunasa, Manus McGuire, the Tannahill Weavers, and Kips Bay. Radio host Fiona Ritchie's selections are always well-chosen, and the tracks on this album are no exception. And while we don't hear her voice, the liner notes do contain a lengthy narrative penned by Fiona, as well as a recipe for Mrs. Walkinshaw's Dundee Cake. Beannachtai na Feile!

2 out of 5 stars Not a Christmas album.......2001-01-23

I was looking forward to this album, but as with many Celtic Christmas albums I have purchased, this was a major diappointment. It didn't particularly have anything to do with Christmas. The album title and list of artists made me think that this would include traditional Christmas songs from the Irish and Scottish traditions. I would love to find such an album. This definitely was not it. On the other hand, unlike my other Christmas music, it is something I can play year-round as well as at Christmas time. I just would have liked to know that before I bought the album.

3 out of 5 stars No christmas in this ceilidh.......2000-12-12

I was sorely disappointed by this album, which is a fine collection of Celtic music, mostly instrumental, but I was expecting an album with the word "Christmas" in it to have some, I don't know, Christmas music? There ain't none. It has a misleading title.

4 out of 5 stars Good music for any time of year.......2000-12-07

I read a postive recommendation of this in the paper so my wife got it for me for St. Nick's Day. It's very nice though as the online review mentions, there is very little in the music itself that refers to Christmas. In any case, the music is lovely and for anyone who likes the Celtic style.

    Product Description

For those who enjoy a chill, world fusion vibe: Jay Atwood – didgeridoo player for Wicked Tinkers – offers this CD of original music. A spiritual mix of Middle Eastern, Persian, and tribal sounds with a sprinkling of electronica and contemporary grooves; Jay draws on the sacred sounds of many different cultures. If you like Deep Forest, Prem Joshua, or Afro-Celt Sound System, you will love this new CD.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yea for Jay!.......2006-08-28

This CD is beautiful! 'She Dances' is my favorite song on the whole disk, but the whole thing is really good. Can't wait to see him and the Wicked Tinkers next year at the Highland Games in Wa!

    Fab sound and amazing overall!

Thanks, Jay for bringing this out!

4 out of 5 stars Jay Atwood and the Wicked Tinkers.......2006-08-02

Now that he is part of the Wicked Tinkers, their sound has changed a little to reflect his style. I look forward to hearing more of his stylings. Jay Atwood is a great musician and a fun person to watch live.

5 out of 5 stars Watch this man!.......2006-07-07

I have been following Jay Atwood's music for some time and was delighted to see him issue Bonfire Dreaming. If you have ever spent hours around a huge bonfire, and tranced and moved and sought visions, this CD evokes those feelings and moods. Mixing rhythms and sounds from varied cultures, Jay paints impressionist paintings of mystic worlds. Highly recommended.

This CD, like the first in the series (Volume 1) provides expert performances of some of Sousa's famous, and not so famous, compositions. It is great fun to hear the suites and other "non-march" numbers. All of these, as well as the marches, are well performed and recorded, and at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended for those interested in classic concert band music!

    Album Description

This album features 16th-century English (Tudor) and 18th-century Scottish material - carols, court dances, songs, instrumentals, children's singing games, Scottish airs and pipe tunes. The latest Revel's CD was made especially for the holidays, with music taken from two separate Christmas Revels holiday stage productions, including popular songs, carols, and rarely recorded material.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Renaissance English and Scottish music.......2007-01-20

This recording is just what I would expect, particularly after looking at the list of material. I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was expecting, but I cannot reconcile the description of somber with the music on this disc. I love the Revels recordings, even with their flaws - the singing can be uneven at times - because it puts me in the mindset of being at a celebration in someone's home, with all present participating. There are sprightly tunes and songs of reflection appropriate to the ending of the year. There are kids' songs and traditional tunes not related to the holidays in and amongst the other material. You'd hear this kind of range at a ceilidh, where those present take turns doing their favorite party pieces.

1 out of 5 stars A most sombre selection, not for a joyous Christmas.......2007-01-15

This was one collection of low key, sombre, depressing music. Don't know at all where the word "Revels" comes in, there is nothing remotely like a Revel here. Great if you want to tone down your Holidays though. Wish I never bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Zemlinsky Lifts His Voice.......2001-01-06

Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942 - he dropped the "von" after Austria became a republic in 1919) composed in all genres from string quartet to opera. James Conlon, an American active in Europe, has taken up Zemlinsky's cause in the manner of a true champion and, with the cooperation of EMI, has issued an ambitious tournée of the not-quite-forgotten composer's music. At the heart of Zemlinsky's choral-orchestral oeuvre are the three Psalms included in the program of the present disc. Zemlinsky's religious background shows many strains: Of Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim extraction, he converted to Protestantism early in the century. The Psalms (Nos. 13 [1935], 23 [1910],and 83 [1901]) belong to both the Christian and the Jewish traditions and so link those two aspects of Zemlinsky's familial milieu; they represent the early, middle, and late periods of his activity. Listeners will note how, in the sequence (83, 23, 13), Zemlinsky's "voice" becomes more distinct. Psalm 83 still works within the Brahmsian ethos and compares with works like "Das Schicksal Lied" or the individual movements of "Ein Deutsches Requiem." "Do not keep silence in this manner, and do not be still, O God, do not hold your peace," the chorus laments to a lugubrious, minor-key melody in slow march-rhythm. An instrumental fugue of grand architecture suggests the wrath of God that the Israelites wish upon their enemies. Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd," requires less agitation in the setting. To highlight the pastoral imagery of the verses, Zemlinsky uses Rimsky-Korsakovian "magical instrumentation" - harp, celesta, glockenspiel, and percussion. The opening oboe-solo looks back to the "Scène aux champs" of the "Symphonie fantastique." The accesion to power of the Nazis forced Zemlinsky from Germany in 1933. Psalm 13, "How long will you forget me," gives expression to the composer's sense of insecurity in Vienna, from which he would have to flee in 1938. Like Psalm 83, this one is intensely polyphonic, with two extended fugues; a sustained chromaticism inveigles the music, giving it a deliberately strained quality. The orchestral colors show more harshly than before. The cantata "Frühlingbegräbnis" sets Paul Heyse's symbolist allegory about "The Death of Spring." Not as impressive as the three Psalms, it nevertheless affords twenty-four minutes of listenable, late-Romantic fare. Oddly, the same performance appears on another of Conlon's Zemlinsky CDs for EMI, along with the "Cymbeline" Suite and "Tanzpoem." Like Mahler, Zemlinsky proclaimed that his time would come. He joins in the wider resurrection of late-Romanticism and forms ranks with Schreker, Korngold, Pfitzner, and Schmidt in enjoying new-found and well-deserved notice on disc. Those interested in this CD should also explore the just-released companion-disc of Zemlinsky's song with orchestra.
