Very good.......2006-06-10
This band is worth seeking out if you like your music based in pop, but hesitate to buy a pop album. Plus Minus seem to be interested in making accessible music, but try to vary their approach with each song. This results in a very mixed album, but a very good mixed album.
Plus minus mixes straight forward rock songs with elecronic pop and folk based pop songs. My favorite tracks are "No One Sees You Like I Do" - an incredibly well done song from a stalker's perspective, and "Here We Are again" - a straightforward pop song about a longterm relationship that is in limbo. "Surprise" and "She's got your eyes" are very good electronic pop songs. "Trapped Under Ice Floes" and "Cutting Out" are very good uptempo rock songs. Even the radio friendly generic-sounding 'megalomaniac' has grown on me and is a decent song.
The only complaint is that perhaps the sequencing could have been better. Some of the songs are subdued and get lost on the album. This complaint is a bit worse on the first album (although that one is also very good). Listen to that one first if you prefer your music dreamy and more Pet Sounds-like.
A very good indie rock album (in which a lot of the songs are noticably different than one another) - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-01
"You Are Here" is a pretty good indie rock album. I don't think it's for everyone, though, as the singer has a kind of like-him-or-not aspect to him. It has some obvious highlights, though I don't think I could call any of them "great" ("Ventriloquist", "Trapped Under Ice Floes" and "Megalomaniac" stand out the most. Oddly enough they all sound like they could be by different bands - or at least from different albums). In the first one, "Ventriloquist", there's a kind of distracting drum section that doesn't really work with the rest of the song. In fact, several songs have something about them that's pretty catchy, but on top of that is another section which kind of distracts you from the hook. I guess it's a little interesting, but it CAN be annoying (to me anyway). None of the songs are GREAT I think, but they are pretty much very good or decent which helps make it a satisfying purchase. It's also a relatively easy album to listen to from start-to-finish which helps the experience. Recommended (indie rock fans would like it more than general rock fans). If you buy it you won't be disappointed.
Highlights include:
everything except "Summer Dress 1 (All Her Winter Clothes)"
So You Know.......2005-06-06
Okay, I think you kids more or less have it covered otherwise, but it's worth noting that +/- is the evolution of the superb pop-noise band Versus. Check it out...
must-have.......2004-09-08
I saw Plus Minus at a Death Cab For Cutie concert, and was more than pleased with their performance . Their sound was something completely new.. at times it reminded me of Death Cab.. but then I'd have to snap out of it and realize it was completely different . A few songs, such as ventriloquist, infuse guitar with a trobbing beat and confusing drum passages to create an almost 'math' sound that make you fall in love with them . I never buy cds of the opening bands at shows, but I was more than happy to purchase this gem . I also never write reviews, but here I am, ready to proclaim the goodness of this relatively unknown great band .
Complex pop never sounded so goooooooooood.......2004-07-30
I'm probably going to tick some people off for calling an Indie Rock band 'pop,' but in the end I think all music is pop, so get over it. Anyway, I was introduced to these guys this April at James Madison University's Macrock festival. They opened with Megalomaniac, and I was hooked for the rest of the show. In Bennie and the Jets there's a line that says, "You're gonna hear electric music, solid walls of sound." That's how I describe these guys. Usually when a band plays really loud for the sake of playing really loud I tune it out and decide that they suck, but when these guys play it loud you can still hear some dynamics and some vocals, so that says something about their talent. All of the songs on this album are really good. 'Cutting Out' holds a superb contrast between a quiet, mellow verse, and a completely rocking, distortedly awesome chorus. 'Trapped Under Ice Flows' (here shortened from their Holding Patterns EP) remains a solid track, a well constructed song that makes you want to drive 60 mph on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 'Here We Are Again' reminds me of mid-90's pop but with an Indie twist, a nice addition. If anything keeps this album from five stars it's that I'd like a few more fast paced songs. The slower stuff is still excellent, but I'd like it changed up a bit. Other than that, this album is an excellent buy. I reccommend it to anyone who just wants to mellow out.

When '90s indie rockers attempt to update their music-making methods and sounds, the results can be tentative and awkward. But Self-Titled Long-Playing Debut Album demonstrates that that's not the case with Versus guitarist James Baluyut. Loading up his computer with all sorts of delicious sounds, Baluyut has crafted an impressive solo album, one where gorgeous melodies are as important as tantalizing textures. And the disc's beats--sometimes in unusual time signatures--are compelling, too. (Fellow Versus member Patrick Ramos contributed additional drum tracks.) The CD's highlight might be "The Queen of Detroit," where Baluyut sings sly, self-deprecating lyrics over a thicket of rhythms and strings that could have been arranged by My Bloody Valentine. There's something about this album's wispy vocals, sense of whimsy, and lovely arrangements that recall Van Dyke Parks, and it's clear that both Baluyut and the old master like to play with the pop they love. --Fred Cisterna
Customer Reviews:
Really good experimental pop.......2006-06-08
This a defintely worth a listen. For those looking for a Versus substitution may be disappointed. This album is definitely pop based, but has a decent amount of variety and does not have any obvious "singles." The songs vary widely in approach, but the album has a laid back, dreamy-melody feel as a whole...at least in comparison to Versus or Plus/Minus's second album.
There's not a bad song on here, but I guess the two songs to check out first are Queens of Detroit and Yo Yo Yo. The middle tracks 5-9 are very strong and are my favorites. If new to this band, check out the next album "You are here." It is not necessarily a better album, but it is catchier with more energy. This is done for better and worse. I am curious to see what this band does next.
Wow..........2005-09-10
The above really sums up how I feel about this album. The debut from +/- is lap pop at its finest. I urge everyone who reads this to buy this immediately, then tell all your friends so that they buy it. It's that good.
Absolute Favorite Album.......2003-12-28
I was first introduced to this album through the radio, the summer of 02. A local college radio station must have been on vacation, and they left the album playing continuously for about 3 weeks. I stumbled upon it, and the entire time, whenever I was in a car or at home near a radio, I would tune in. It was so hauntingly addictive; the mellow tone was very welcome, and it's something you'll enjoy if you're into melodic music. But the album's entire composition is genius. There are parts of harsh, grinding guitar that come at perfect times in the length of the cd. The beats were so odd; it was the first time I had really been introduced to 5/4, and I've been hooked since. But there's something more than just math rock meets laptop. There's this underbelly of pure musical beauty that not many people can create.
There's one song, track 10, that I used to pace myself in races (running). I hadn't been able to hear the music at all since the end of the summer, because I didn't know what it was. But from then till december, I just couldn't forget the songs. The running song stayed in my head constantly, and it became a part of me. It wasn't until that december that I finally found out what the mystery album was. I purchased the album, and found it to be everything I remembered. This album is definitely a must-have.
A Pleasant and Light CD.......2002-05-22
I have always liked early Versus music and I appreciate the initial sound of this cd. Recent Versus music hasn't done much for me but this is a nice refreshing cd from one of the former members of Versus. It isn't instantly catchy, as you might expect based on the "Secret Swingers" other more recent Versus cds. It is light, as a result of both James's light singing voice and the electronic glitch noises. There are no heavy organ or overbearing keyboard sounds, it is all flutters and squiggle-type electronic sounds. Some of the foundations of the songs are acoustic while 2 songs really have a heavy distorted electric guitar sound but it comes and goes throughout the song so, it makes those songs fairly interesting. The most instantly catchy song for me so far is song 12 (I can't read the small print on the cd very well so I will simply call it song 12). I would recommend this cd to someone looking for something a little off the conventional pop structure. It's growing on me with every listen.

High School Girly Rock.......2005-02-04
These ladies (and one guy) from Albuquerque were rocking hard before they even got out of high school. This album is a testament to the natural ability of a band that at the time was just a bunch of kids. If you're into girl rock (i.e. Elastica, Cub, All Girl Summer Fun Band) this is a good band to pick up. This album is refreshing in all its geeky high school charm. The lyrics are cute without being kitschy and the melodies are catchy and really enjoyable. I actually picked up this record because I liked the cover and I didn't see anything else in the record store worth buying. I have since become a full-on Rondelles fan. I celebrate the bands entire catalogue. So if you're looking for some nice fun girl rock to listen to, the Rondelles are for you. All their albums are great but this one is my personal favorite.
What a pleasant mistake!.......2001-06-20
I bought this record thinking I had been lucky enough to aquire a rare pressing of Elton John's long OOP (Out-Of-Print) album "The Fox", which my wife and I recieved for a wedding present in 1981. Boy was I ever surprised! I'll bet these girls are so young they weren't even around to hear such classics as "Just like Belgium" and "Heels of the wind". At any rate, after having found the real EJ classic here at amazon I thought I'd give this one another spin and - guess what - I liked it. A solid beat the whole way through! Maybe one day they will release something on par with Elton's "Rock of the Westies". We can only hope...
why aren't the rondelles more popular?.......2000-09-09
they're catchier than elastica, smarter than the donnas, have more talent in their fingernails than any of the teen stars (i.e. britney crapola and christina puke), this album is perfectly produced, they rock like all hell live, and they're all so pin-up cute - what gives? buy this album right now to start the rondelles revolution! they deserve it!
Worth the cash, but don't expect something groundbreaking.......2000-07-07
With the exception of a particularly irritating song (Don't thetwist) this album quite simply...rocks. Infectious pop melodies, smooth sweet vocals, along with riffs that'll be stuck in yr head for weeks. Has a lot of what the Donnas missed: vocals on this are better, the rock anthems aren't as corny, and it's at a good speed. By far, the two top tracks are 'Rediscover Fire' and 'Pay Attention to Me'. It doesn't take a while to get into it, it happens immediately. VERY dancable...you'll be clapping along on the first listen. It might be a revolution-starter that'll be on your top ten (although it's entirely possible) but it's a fun CD packed with originality and sweetness.
They grew up so fast.......2000-03-12
The Rondelles' first album, "Fiction Romance, Fast Machines," was great. It was precocious and charming, a fine debut. Somehow, though, "The Fox" blows that debut out of the water.
Everything has improved: production, performance and, above all, songwriting. This is a pop masterpiece with no filler. The perfection of the arrangements is stunning by anyone's standards -- and these kids are barely in their 20s.
The Rondelles may still be The Cutest Band on Earth, but good luck finding any band who can also rock this hard, and this well. Recommended for everyone. Period.

one of the best singles comps ever.......2006-02-20
"dead leaves" could easily be an album and not a singles comp...i wore this one out folks. the near tone deaf deadpan semi-snarky vocaling of richard balaut (sp?) and fontaine toupes (sp?) is truly something to behold. they were also quite the live show...4 tin foil stars.
The Best From The Best.......1999-11-04
It is a good thing that Amazon has finally managed to make available this collection of songs from Versus -- a crucial addition for any fan. Although culled from B-sides, singles and compilation discs, "Dead Leaves" actually emits the feel of a wholly executed album. From the blistering "Astronaut" which kicks off this collection to the mournful "Crazy", these songs are classic Versus with every single one a winner. Featured here are the usual stellar mix of vocals from Richard and Fontaine which allow songs like "Bright Light", "Sunburned" and "Flax" to approach the sublime. The tightness with which the band plays lends real power to the rockers on the disc and an ethereal beauty to the more melodic offerings. While shades of Sonic Youth surface from time to time, the originality of the Versus "sound" identifies them as far and away one of the best bands currently playing and crafting new music today. An invigorating boost to even the most jaded of music fans, I can't recommend this disc enough.

Great 60's all girl high school romantic semi-psychedelic garage-pop band.......2007-03-11
Imaginative, sensitively written and performed, with just enough teen angst.
The first half (tracks 1-11) are the originally released tracks with a few session musicians mixed in, the second half are the previously unreleased studio demos of many of the same songs with just the girls on instruments, which I actually prefer, although the studio mixes are also very well done. Excellent vocals, and electric guitar, bass, organ, and drums played by the band members themselves. Exceptionally good songwriting.
Nostalgic yet refreshing and still relevant.......2005-11-05
One of the joys of eclectic record collecting is to visit a "Mom & Pop" retailer, spot an interesting looking vinyl or CD, buy it, then take it home...and shelve it for future reference - only to discover months later that it became an instant "keeper" - yes, this 1969 album (with 11 additional studio cuts and demos) became my 2005 "Summer album".
Every second of sound brings back sight and sound memories of my first year at college and college related events and regional concerts where an "all-girl group" might be the opening act and in spots they outdo the main attraction - you know, like "so and so was great, but who was that group?...."
The "Livin' Love" album demos are, to me, more enjoyable, in their quiet simplicity - though "I've Been Workin' On You" sounds as if the ladies were listening to the James Brown l.p. "I Can't Stand Myself When You Touch Me" and referenced "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby" - indeed the liners say that they did a tribute to JB in their live shows. This sound can only be described as Blue-Eyed Soul. I don't know if it's Pame Stephens or Jean Williams on the lead vocal, but it's a powerful workout whoever's at the lead mike. I also enjoyed the loopy intro. which seems to anticipate Stevie Wonder's much later "You Haven't Done Nothin'". Another ahead-of-it's-time track is number 16, "Now I Care", the chorus of which invites comparison with Chicago's "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" The demonstration "Are You Lonesome Like Me?" is a whispered statement, actually more effective in its' *under*-production, if you will; as is "Hold Me". Other presumptive influences are the Beatles on "Love, Love, Love" and Lesley Gore on "Forgetting".
I doubt that these talented ladies from Nashville will make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - who knows if they were able to continue if the hits would have happened. There's plenty of sound on their first and only album to suggest that the charts would not have eluded them.
These "Local Girls" REALLY make good in this fun compilation.......2004-08-14
As a "collector" in what could be called second generation - as in re-releases of vinyls on to CD, I'm always pleased to see things "new" to me that someone (specifically, Jonathan Marx) made the effort to do legwork on and put together. This CD has been one hard to stop listening to/enjoying as I've done for quite a while now. Not just for the originality of the songs on it, but how well they're performed by the group overall. In this collection, you get to enjoy not only mesmerizing "mellow moods" reminiscent of later artists Carlos Santana and "The Style Council" with tracks like "Now I Need You", "Are You Lonesome Like Me?", "Now I Care" and "Hold Me". There are more "gimmicky" and faster beat tunes - "Hide & Seek" ,"It's Magic", "Time Slips By" - like more polished works of other all-girl band "The Luv'd Ones", IMO. The more whimsical songs in the collection - "Love Love Love" and "Forgetting" - round out the selections and connect you to the 1960's era by giving you a taste of what styles were popular without actually doing covers of other pop hits lots of other starting bands did. Although I would have to say "Forgetting" reminds me an awful lot of Nancy Sinatra's "Sugar Town" or other chirpy "feel good" tunes the Cowsills might have done! It's also nice to hear the demos too. Stripped down of all the production quality these songs hold their own and are well composed. Lastly, although the former group members may or may not want to cringe at the vintage photos throughout the booklet, it's a sweet addition to see that the talented girls belting out so much energy appeared to be just like everyday neighborhood girls you'd be able to walk up to and chat with any time!
Great 60's psychedelic pop!!!.......2001-11-25
I stumbled across this group by accident. I was watching a Debbie Harry movie "Six ways to Sunday" and over the closing credits was an incredible song that I assumed must have been some great late 60s girl group hit that I had never heard. Reading the credits I saw the song was "Love love love" by the Feminine Complex. Searching the internet, I came to find that they were an unsuccessful group who's album, fortunately, was reissued on cd. The music is incredible and very impressive considering that Mindy Dalton, as a 17 year old, could write better music with more intelligent lyrics than a lot of today's artists. The production is first rate with some great bluesy psychedelic rock tracks (which a friend of mine compares to the San Francisco band "Cold Blood" also from about the same era.) The ballads are first rate as well and display the quality of Mindy's voice beautifully. Jean William's one writing composition on the album "Forgetting" is an excellant piece of 60's pop. We can only hope the continued exposure of this music gives the girls the credit they deserve after all these years. The cd is filled out with demo tracks which display a much leaner garage band sound with guitar arrangements, some of which, strangely, remind me of the Smiths. There is a companion cd to this (which is out of print) which collects the rest of the groups known recordings, mainly live takes and early cover versions. If you like this one, the other disc is worth locating.
Incredible!!.......2000-12-01
Outstanding nostaligic sounds from the 60s. The lead singer has an excellent voice, but the back up singers contribute just as much if not more! Creative lyrics and incredibly underpriced for such music!! Unbelievable the singers couldn't make it further at the time!

Killer stuff, this........2006-11-23
Hey Sugar, the debut cd from Bossanova, prooves that the folks over at TeenBeat have an ear for the good stuff. The band, comprised of members of the New Pornographers and Black Mountain, pours forth cheerful pop tunes with surprisingly violent (at times) lyrics. "Calvary" for example kicks off with "It's time to kill/ They're waiting on top of the hill". It never strains though, and just try to listen to this and not nod your head. Hopefully a taste of what's to come.

Customer Reviews:
A mostly terrible band but a good album.......2002-06-21
I always hated Eggs. They were best friends with one of my favorite bands of all time, Pitchblende.. but I always hated them. I had heard the album "Bruiser" and a few other miscellaneous tracks and really thought they were one of the worst bands I'd ever heard. Then I heard the songs "Evanston, IL" and "Why am I so Tired All the Time"... both terrific songs, both on "Exploder". So, I bought "Exploder".
As you might expect, it's hit or miss.... but even the 'bad' songs on this album are pretty good. They rock out in a jangly pop way with a similar ineptness to play their instruments as Beat Happening or something similar (though the music here is much less cute pop and much more 'indie rock'.. it was 1995, after all).
It's a fun CD and I'm glad I have it. If you see "Bruiser" in a used bin somewhere then leave it the hell alone.
