3 out of 5 stars Background music.......2007-05-25

Here's the short review:

Stampede is less like a stampede and more like like a warm electronic oatmeal bath. The music is fine for background at the edgy cafe, but I kept waiting for Skerik or somebody to start ripping.

If you like Amoeba, you may like Stampede.

If you, as I do, prefer Host and Guest, skip it. There is no Mullet Cut, Critter's Theme, Brozo the Clown, or Communist Frankenstein Government Headset Earphone Radio Monster material on Stampede.

5 out of 5 stars Seattle-lite.......2006-07-28

This is by far the most listenable album from Critters, but also probably their best.
The band takes on a huge spectrum of sounds making the album an eclectic electronic-acid-rock-funk-jazz whirlwind. Some songs are soft, even emotional, while others have that strong Critters sax+percussion+base. Then there's the last track - all it's missing is George Harrison with a sitar.

5 out of 5 stars Bridging multiple worlds . . ........2005-04-19

. . . improv, electronica, world, funk, lounge to name a few. And doing a dang good job of it.

I'm pretty much blown away by this disc. Mylab, Tucker Martine/Eyvind Kang (who, not surprisingly, mixes string arrangements on three cuts), Miles Gurtu, Nathan Michel, and Garage a Trois--not to mention Fantomas (esp. Delirium Cordia, without the darkness)--come to mind as possible analogs, but these guys have pretty much staked out their own unique territory. One that gets my juices flowing. Big time.

For one thing, there's a great balance between live sounds and post-production effects. Very cool. One almost gets the feeling that this stuff could be played in concert and come across just about as effectively as on this studio disc, despite the amount of processing and fooling around, which, although it definitely enhances things, doesn't overwhelm.

A lot of that's due to the level of true improv, song writing ability, group conversation, and instrumental mastery these guys have risen to since their debut a decade or so ago. From their humble beginnings as just another jazz thrash band, these fellows have become true innovators. Moreover, they've developed a huge cultural reach embracing everything from surf to bossa thrash without blinking an eye.

A disc of immense pleasure and possibility. One of my favorites so far this year.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, seductive and sophisticated........2007-07-11

Two Loons for Tea's self-titled album is a splendid mix of genres. An avid electronic music fan myself, I like anything that takes normally incompatible sounds or beats and makes them work, but it's not just about blending sounds; rock fans will like the punchy accents and crescendos, jazz fans will adore the shifting blend of instruments that come in and out of the fore and background and everyone will love the intelligent lyrics delivered by an innovative and versatile vocalist. The tracks have a similar feel to each other, but it never gets boring because each song is a different angle on something that's great to begin with. The true brilliance is finding rhythm and melody in a constantly shifting soundscape. You may hear a catchy hook at the beginning of a song, but you never hear it exactly the same way again. It evolves as you listen, grows as you watch like a time-lapse video. This album is genius and really shows what a team of musicians who are unafraid to experiment with what's technically capable, yet soundly based on what is pleasing to the ear and resonates with human emotion are capable of. I haven't stopped hearing Two Loons for Tea in my head since I first heard it a week ago and it redefines my musical tastes in a profound way.

5 out of 5 stars A tremendously appealing album.......2007-07-09

Incredibly diverse songs that form an intriguingly consistent whole. The music and Sarah Scott's voice register as opulent and stark and difficult and easy all at the same time. This is a tremendously appealing album. The first time I listened to the song "Neon Nothing" I was transfixed. It's the same way I felt when I listened to some of the songs on Nirvana Unplugged. Trip-Hop and Nirvana aren't supposed to have much in common, but with "Two Loons" all comparisons seem to be fair game.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent, actually I would give it 4.5 stars.......2006-03-24

The music, the lyrics... they are interesting, the music is fresh, its imaginative. I just wonder how different could life be if only instead of the worthless bubblegum pop we would get airplay of groups like this. I strongly recomend this album, brickwall, boy and specially strangers, listen to this last one and you'll undesrtand what I am talking about. You won't regret it; it is not pop, or alternative or adult contemp it is a fusion of that and more. Great album.

5 out of 5 stars "Loons" fly.......2005-01-30

Two Loons For Tea are one of those subtle bands, whose self-titled album became an underground hit based purely on talent. It's an intoxicating mix of trip-hop, catchy pop, jazz and smooth guitar. The main flaw is that it's way too short -- only nine songs, but what exceptional pop songs they are.

It opens with the gorgeous "Brickwall," an expansive trip-hop song with some sharp percussion and incomparable layering. But the faster pace melts away into a sweet, slightly murky pop song, which is made even more lovely by Sarah Scott murmurs, "They always interfere with love/she's out on the town/still wants a boy, a boy..."

For the rest of their debut, Two Loons For Tea stretch their wings with atmospheric pop songs tinged with jazzy brass, ending with a pair of darker melodies. "Strangers" is a shimmering, dense song, while the finale "Parachute" is halting, melodic, soft and a little nervous-sounding. It's an exquisite end to an otherwise confident ending.

"Two Loons For Tea" had pretty much no hype when it was first released, but it slipped into music-lovers' collections anyway. Their sound is a sort of collision between Portishead and Emiliana Torrini, with a dash of Mazzy Star thrown in -- and while jazz, trip-hop and pop don't usually mesh so well, here they blend perfectly.

The band itself is the brainchild of Scott and Jonathan Kochmer, and their work is perfectly in sync. Scott provides strong vocals that can be throaty, sweet or fragile. Instrumentally, Kochmer steals the show by playing three guitars -- electric, synth, and some exquisite acoustic playing in "Neon Nothing," where it's just Scott's voice and some guitar. It sounds like they're playing in a coffeehouse.

Backing them are a number of other musicians, who contribute percussion, hammond and piano, even more guitar, and something called "effects" -- I think it means little chimes and additional electronic blips. Jessica Lurie and Skerik also contribute saxophones to three songs, adding a jazzy flavor to straightforward trip-hop tunes.

Two Loons for Tea made only a little splash with their self-titled debut, but it's an album that overflows with beauty and musical depth. A must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24

This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

5 out of 5 stars space tank.......2005-11-08

this album is really different....there is a lot going on here. The songs all have a pulse. I don't know, maybe I like the way it crept up on me. Like another person said somewhere here, for what it is, its exceptional.

3 out of 5 stars Good for an occasional spin.......2001-01-07

If you are new to Critters Buggin, I would go with Guest or Host. Those disks fully rock! Amoeba is more like what you put in when you want to hear what heroin sounds like (or something). I spin this disk only every now and then when in ultra mellow slightly darkened mood. But for what it is, its great.

1 out of 5 stars Painful let down........2000-08-28

I ran out and bought this album the day it came out, listened to it a couple of times (or tried at least), and I totally forget what I did with it. I could care less because the album was a huge let down for me.

I have always been fine with the small amount of random noise on other Critters Buggin albums cause they are surrounded by so much awesome stuff and you just cant get music so cool without a little bird walking. It's also kind of amusing in small doses. I usually just chalked it up to the ad-hock nature of the band, which is a big part of their appeal to me. I've seen them live a few times, and I know to expect a little bit of cling with the clang. But this album is like the opposite of all their others, its almost all meaningless sonic ranting and moaning.

I'm not into trance or ambient or whatever, so my opinion might be skewed, some people might like this album. It's just that it totally lacks the beat and intensity of their other stuff, which is what I loved so much. The absence of Skerik's sax is also deeply missed. I realize I'm not saying much of substance about what the music is like, but I think its cause I cant! I seriously hope the style of "music" on this album was just a phase. If you are at all interested in checking this band out, and you should if they sound interesting to you, do yourself and the band a favor and get at least one of their other albums.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Dissapointed - But Still Pretty Good.......2000-06-20

I was a bit let down by this Critters Buggin album. It's good ambient music (background music), but not a great listen. There are very few tracks that stick out. I liked tracks like "Imperial Turkey Blister" and "Emporer Chi Chi", but there isn't much else here. I'm an absolutely HUGE fan of Skerik, but there are next to no sax solos anywhere. I know this may have not much to do with the musicallity of the record, but the first three Critters albums started off with a great song that always had great beats and well-used samples. This one is pretty slow and relaxed through-out. That could be a result of Tuatara's influence on Skerik, and if so the styles of the two bands don't mix well. It's a good album, but I wouldn't recomend it for a first listen of Critters Buggin's music. Go for Host or Guest first, then check this one out. They're a great band.

Raucous neo-bop instrumental frenzy from a band that could introduce some fresh ideas and sounds to a new generation. The name to tout is Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, who puts his imprimatur on these hyperactive, sax-driven jams in his role as co-producer. "Shag," "Naked Truth" (featuring singer Shawn Smith from the Seattle band Brad), and "Double Pot Roast Backpack" are standouts. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More than 5 stars.......2003-04-23

Critters Buggin are one of the best, and relatively unknown, sounds to come out of the early 90s Seattle Grunge scene. This is their first of four albums and it is hard to say which one is the best as all of them hold their own (although Amoeba can be a bit difficult given its completely ambient styling). As other reviewers have written, they combine as many styles of music as one can imagine and turn them into a new sound.
This band also deserves respect in that they never went commercial with their music. They had hundreds of offers for their music to be in commercials and movies and they turned down every single one, preferring to stay true to the music they created. If you like them check out Nash Kato, Ponga, and Shawn Smith. Also, you can find the saxaphone player, Skerik, on the Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade cds.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome from start to finish.......2002-08-25

This is Critters first full length album they released. I was a senior in high school listening to punk rock and grunge in 1994. I wish I had been listening to these guys. Cool album. Screw all that other "emo" they sling at you on the radio and MTV---these guys are the real deal and they were way way ahead of thier time. A great album all around.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Intriguing Clash of Styles.......2000-02-24

Sort of a car wreck of styles, with hard bop, hippie jamming, rock and tape looping all getting into a major accident. But like many accidents, it's hard to look away. Very challenging stuff, and quite interesting, although I find that I definitely need to be "in a mood" to listen to it - not recommended for cocktail parties or relaxing at home. My favorite track is "5/4 ftd" (which sounds like a slightly large floral arrangement) but if you like the samples, you'll probably like the entire disc.

4 out of 5 stars Great record, but please credit sources.......1999-11-18

Wonderful, jam-filled funfest of a record. One complaint is the blatant cop of Prince's (Michael B's) "Arrogance" groove on the first track and David Sylvian's (Steve Jansen's) "Taking the Veil" on the fifth. Credit your sources, guys.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of their time.......1999-02-23

It's a thrill to hear someone fusing electronica with improvisation created in real time! When techno-clubbers get tired of watching two guys on stage twiddle knobs on machines as a live concert, and when jazz fans start looking for something new, they're all going to land here. And the textures, the textures-- the feel is someting that can only be created by those who care deeply about both kinds of music.

5 out of 5 stars Pacific Northwest weirdness rules.......2005-06-12

    One of my all-time favorites

Industrial noise garage thrash Pacific Northwest out funk jazz--that's what we've got here. The inimitable Skerik (of the Taint Septet and lots of other projects) together with Matt Chamberlain (drum set, Taos drums, table, idiot guitar [?], lap slide, loops, screaming, percussion) and Brad Houser (basses, bass clarinet, screaming) link up to purvey weirdo/accessible sounds of the first water.

This music strikes me as much more dynamic, vital, and interesting than, say, Secret Chiefs Three. For one thing, there's such a genuinely freakish sci-fi, horror movie soundtrack vibe (e.g., "Mount Blasta," "Crowley Dissertation," "Bill Gates") as to make these guys almost a class unto themselves. Plus, Matt Chamberlain has a brilliant world-funk approach to his drum kit and percussion voicings. Additionally, they've managed to snag this completely outrageous garage jazz/punk vibe, analogous to the best pulp science fiction, or perhaps William Gibson at his most expressive. Mona Lisa Overdrive, indeed.

Fans will be thrilled to learn that all their discs will soon be back in print, as they've gotten the rights back and will be reissuing them in the summer of 2004. Plus, their latest, Stampede, will be available Sept. of 2004 from Ropeadope.

    I'm a fan. Big time.

This cd is a must for any collection, whether your kickin' back with you lady or just closing your eyes and letting the music take you. I have a real thing for jazz and this is one of the few house cd's that can take jazz and blend it without making you cringe at the electronic horns. These are real tracks here. Nothing but the best. DJ Sneak really took his time with this one.

    5 out of 5 stars AHOUSEHEAD.......2002-05-11

I HAVE HAD THIS ALBUM 4 A FEW YEARS , BUT IT IS SOOO DAMN GOOD I HAD 2 WRITE A REVIEW . DJ SNEAK'S MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS NOT 2 SEND YOU TO THE DANCE FLOOR WITH YOUR HEART RACING , BUT 2 SEND YOU INTO A DEEP HYPNOTIC GROOVE 4 YOUR MIND AS WELLAS YOUR SOUL . IF U R A TRUE HOUSE HEAD LIKE MYSELF THEN THIS GROOVE WILL GROOVE YOUR SOUL AND FEED YO' MIND!

    5 out of 5 stars classic.......2000-09-26

In a word, this CD is CLASSIC! DJ Sneak creates a very smooth blend with this CD that you will keep going back to when the sensationalism of newer CDs where off. Be warned though, this is not a hardcore dance CD & it probably won't make you feel like bustin it up, but it is does create a nice, smooth, & comfortable groove that will not make you sorry for buying it.

    4 out of 5 stars UNDERGROUND.......1999-06-19

I went out to browse a few cd's and guess what I came across......? When I first put this albumin I knew right from the start that it would groove me all nite long. The beats aren't repeating at all. Its very underground. Alot of the tracks on this disk reminded me when I went to my first party a while back. Its a sure 4 star album you must check out.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago house at it's best..........1998-10-05

Dj Sneak has made some of the all time greatest house tracks that ever came out of Chicago. He is also an awesome DJ who can keep the party alive from Chicago to London. When I first bought this CD, I tried to get all the tracks on vinyl to spin myself. Then, I soon found out that they were all out of print. Every track on this CD is either ultra rare and sweet or just plain old sweet. It's a must buy.
