Even better than the first.......2007-05-08
As a long-time admirer of John Wetton's work (Uriah Heep, Asia, etc.), I was happy to see the Asia-like follow-on of Icon. While the original album had many high points (God Walks With Us, In the End), it was uneven in spots. Not so with Rubicon, which is consistently excellent throughout. The album is bookended with "The Die is Cast" and "Rubicon" (check your history books if you don't get the reference), with moments of sheer genius between. Can't wait for the next installment...I hope the upcoming Asia reunion won't spell the end of Icon.

definitely not Fields.......2007-03-21
I have to disagree with the first poster here who gave this album 4 stars. Being a die-hard FOTN fan, I bought this when it first came out in the early 1990s. I was completely disappointed- the singer who replaced Carl was awful and he sounded like he didn't belong with the band. From what I can recall (I no longer own this CD) the singer's voice reminded me of some bad 80s hair band vocalist. Perhaps this is why Rubicon never made a second album and the rest of the band went on to other projects. For all those out there who love the old style Fields, don't bother with this because you will only be disappointed.
Straight rock.......2007-03-05
I'm a Fields of a nephilim fan but did not really like their two last (Fallen-Mourning sun). I much prefer this one with the original four nephilim band members. For sure it's less gothic and more straight rock but that is what is good about it.
My favorite song on this one. I hesitate pretty much between Watch without pain and Unspoken. The first one is more etheral on guitar, has a bouncing bass, the second has a looping bass and they both have extended words singing.
Crazed is a pretty good and makes me think about Blue man group on the guitar and percussions. I love the languorous mood Brave heart has and the the more metal Rivers.
I love it!

a great band falling into redundency.......2007-02-17
5 years in the making. so why does it feel like it was all done in less than a year?
Gunther Theys and his fellow musicians have a knack for epic melodies sandwiched between solid riffs amidst thunderous drumming, a steel-clad foundation for Theys' classy and researched lyrics. this formula has worked times and time again with all the previous albums, converting me into a fan. Rubicon, however will always sound to me as the hasty work of an artist who got reminded by his record label of the impending release deadline. the first three songs rely heavily on altered versions of previous ancient rites songs, especially the lame (the Grimoire of Exalted Deeds would have said "faggoty") intro. while 'signature riffs' still pepper the rest of the album, they are not as glaring as in the first 3 tracks and thus, remain tolerated. in those 5 years, the band could have easily come up with enough riff material and consequently give us a completely 'new' album!
excepting the songs "thermopylae" , "invictus", "ypres" and "cheruscan", all melodies seem to meander aimlessly until the whole song transforms into a background wall of noise, losing the listener in the process. good sugary melodies that quickly turn sour because they are not supporting anything, they're just 'there'. "track got a little boring here; we need a melody!"- that kind of melody! the mentioned exceptions are of course, superb in their melodic fluidity and memorable passages especially thermopylae! that song with "ypres" are some of the best songs ancient rites made: trademark choruses, clear lamenting vocals in the chorus, deadly balance of riff/melody, and rythmics that go along make them ideal for the stage. then again, 4 songs are hardly worth the wait. this album could have been shrunk into a 20-25 minute EP with nothing but fresh music and it would have deserved a full rating. melodies and riffing that were (and still are!) awesome on earlier albums (especially Dim Carcosa), should not be re-exploited and repackaged as a 'new' album.
Great thrash-tinged power metal.......2007-02-01
This is the first album I've bought from Ancient Rites and it was well worth the money. Power metal is not a very innovative genre, but the thrash and even death-infused power metal crafted by Ancient Rites is fresh and enjoyable. Though much of the album features orchestration, it avoids the sometimes tacky metal-meets-Broadway trappings of so much of the genre. The playing on here is quite solid, as is the songwriting. The songs are certainly not avant-garde in terms of structure, but they are catchy. As a historian and consummate geek, I also appreciate the historical subject matter of the lyrics. The gruff but not growled vocals aren't half bad, either.

Customer Reviews:
One of the most original death metal albums of all time!.......2007-06-20
That this is one of the best death metal albums of all time is not an understatement. Benediction not only didn't sound like anyone else, with this album they were able to break out with the skills they had been honing in on and come out with a stellar release. Almost everything has improved on this release, most notably the production is top notch and punchy with more focus on the mid and low range.
The guitar riffs are really catchy and melodic yet incredibly heavy. The whisky cough vocals of Dave Ingram are even further improved from the previous "Grand Leveller". They are even lower sounding with the benefit of the listener still being able to understand the words. The bass seems to have been lost again in the production. The drumming is top notch and is quite intricate in parts most notably on "Unfound Mortality". Most of all the song writing is top notch and always encompasses heaviness, melody, and precision. Songs like "Nightfear" showcase everything (great riffs, section changes, varying tempos) that is awesome about Benediction. The songs all range from 3:30 to a few ranging five or six minutes.
Two songs have been re-recorded from the first album (Subconscious Terror) and fit into the last track "Artefacted/Spit Forth". "Wrong side of the grave" is a cover from the first Accused album ("Return of Martha Splatterhead"). The cover is pretty good and completely faithful to the original. Listen to the awesome backing vocals on that track. Plus, what other Death Metal band would cover an Accused song?
Highly recommended for people who liked the first wave of Death Metal with bands that were able to do melody and yet still be heavy.
Great album, but the re-release is not as good as the original.......2006-01-25
Trascend the Rubicon is an excellent death metal album. Unfortunately, the re-issue does not contain any lyrics and comes in a digi-pack. I HATE DIGI-PACKS !!!! The music is in the style of Bolt Thrower and Massacre, but with more twists. If you are new to Benediction, I would say this is the album to pick up, but try to find the original version.
The best DM album ever made.......2001-03-31
Quite simply put, this was the best Death Metal album ever constructed. It contains a most perfect and unique balance of power, speed, gut-wrenching vocals, heaviness, intensity, and shredding riffs. Any one of the younger fans wondering who Benediction really is, you really need to purchase this album. Transcend The Rubicon not only defines Benediction, it defines everything that death metal was supposed to be. Even after being out for 7 1/2 years, and I was just listening to it the other day, it NEVER gets old.
YEEEESSS!.......2000-07-04
This is it! One of the most brutal Records that ever had the honour to make my brain collapse! From the opening of "Unfound Mortality" to the final Riffs of "Artefaced/Spit forth" ( a medley of two songs from their Subconcious Terror Debut CD) Benediction makes you feel like you are pushed to the ground and beaten with an iron fist! Death Metal isn't the right expression for what Benediction do on this Record, BRUTALITY WITHOUT MERCY COMBINED WITH SOME OF THE HEAVIEST RIFFS THAT WERE EVER PLAYED would be suitible. "Painted Skull", "Violation Domain", "Nightfear", tracks that kill at first sight. A must-have for any Death Metal Fan. One of the eleven highlights on this CD is "Wrong Side of the Grave", written by THE ACCÜSED where Benediction get Assistance from Jan Chris of Gorefest and Karl from Bolt Thrower!

Sheer kinetic energy..........2006-05-03
Oozing instant "get up & dance" beats "Rubicon" is an exuberant, totally infectious slice of "good time" 80's house/synth catapulted into 2004 by Alan Braxe & Fred Falke. It's retro, it's French and it's so ridiculously addictive that it should carry a health warning. One of the best dance tracks of the past few years? Some claim... but as you ponder the question watch out for stray bodies bouncing off the walls. Best not to play too loud in company.

First the songs: Ageless, Rest a While, Doubt All, Insatiable, Cut Down, On Your Side, This Drenching Night, Bury My Gold, Empty Hands, Eat With Me.
if you like fields of the nephilim, you probably will like Rubicon, taking into account this is the band of yates, wright, pettit and wright with vocalist andrew delany.
the only reason to rate this with 4 stars is because "what starts, ends" (their previous cd) is perfect and unmatchable, and have what i consider the best indie, rock gothic song ever: "Watch Without Pain"
you could find this two works in beggars banquet web.
