Fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch'hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer, Los Angeles sextet Dengue Fever blends the rhythms of sixties Cambodian pop--heavily influenced by American surf, rock, and early psychedelic garage bands--with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles. Unlike the world music bands of the late eighties, Dengue Fever is more concerned with a universal groove and breaking down musical barriers than with notions of authenticity. There are echoes of Bollywood soundtracks, Ethiopian soul, American R&B, Cambodian folk, Spaghetti Western weirdness, and girl-group angst in the mix, but the resulting concoction is the band's own.

On Escape from Dragon House, the sound is denser, thicker, and richer than on the group's 2003 self-titled debut. Escape from Dragon House is also darker, both musically and lyrically, with a fully realized style that melts all of the band's influences into one realized voice that is pure Dengue Fever.

I bought the original version of this CD after stumbling across Dengue Fever on the National Geographic world music website under Cambodia (even though the band is in Southern California -- where else!). What a find! From the moment I popped it into my CD player, I was hooked. I can't exactly claim to be a world music aficionado, but I do like to try different kinds of music from just about everywhere, and every once in a while I get lucky and find a real gem like this one.

I can't understand a word of Khmer, but that was no impediment to my falling in love with Chhom Nimol. Her voice is powerful, clear, and mesmerizing. The music feels kind of like a time warp. It makes me feel good. In trying to describe it, words like mod, cool, groovy, and funky come to mind. There's one track in particular, "One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula," that makes me feel like I'm dissolving or something; I don't know how else to describe it. How do they do that??? At first my wife thought I was going a little crazy listening to that -- but I think I've got her liking it now too. There are a whole lot of other great tracks here too. Give it a try -- you won't regret it! By the way, I also have their self-titled debut album and it has the same addictive effect on me.

Just the other day I bought this recently released enhanced version of this CD, partly because I was afraid of wearing the first one out. The bonus track is kind of fun, and the video is fantastic! The whole band looks really cool. It's psychadelic! -- I hope I can use that word here without giving the wrong connotation. And in case I haven't said it already, Chhom Nimol is beautiful.

I've long been a fan of Real World Records, led there by an interest in Peter Gabriel. This compilation reaffirms that interest with every listen.

"A Week or Two in the Real World" is a veritable cream of the crop. Every track is something new and unique.

If you're new to the ambigiously named "world music" genre, this compilation is a great place to start. A smart way to get your feet wet in this extraordinarily broad and rich genre.

Highly recommended.

This paticular cd, in the club venue, is definitely high energy, completely devoid of any paticular groups jamming which frequently discourages large audiences from various venues. I suspect it suffered from marketing underexposure. Altho UBL's club anthems and Club Europe are considered to be the most popular of the club music venues this cd can definitely hold its own place amongst those giants.

This is one of those rare CD's that can just be left in your CD player. Out of the many Acid Jazz/Chill Out albums I have, this is clearly the best. My favorite track is #3; a beautifully crafted track that is, for lack of a better word, perfect. Don't miss out on this one!

Bossa Mundo - I think this is the first real US release of this franchise. Based on Yellow label, the first one that came out was "Bossa Tres... Jazz when Japan meets Europe" was the bigger release, which featured different renditions of a couple tracks and two discs of cuts. This one is a single disc of some of the best cuts and some alternative takes.

I dug this one. I honestly picked it up about a month or so before Bossa Tres... Jazz. What pushed me to get it was Tom & Joyce's "Vai Minha Tristeza". I'd heard the track earlier on ESL's "Jet Society" and dug it. The one featured here is a remix - done by Francois K & Eric Krupper but it has a really cool house like vibe to it. Nice beat, smooth rythm. But the beginning of this cd is also awesome - you can't go wrong with Calm's jazzy and beaty cut "People From the Sun and the Earth" and Little Big Bee's "Searchin", remixed by Atjazz has become somewhat of a nu-jazz/nu-bossa classic. You can even check it out on Brazilectro II. Such a mature sound, nice guitar, great electronic accents. Down the line you have Compost masters Kyoto Jazz Massive and jazzanova with some neat tunes - the ratatat of Kyoto's sound and the pinpoint production of Jazzanova's greate. And of course, Salome De Bahia. She remade a Stevie Wonder cut here and her voice, so powerful! While the song isn't my favorite, her voice is something special.

The verdict? I definitely recommend this. The timing of this one is a bit old now - it came out in 1999. And you want to be careful of overlap. Bossa Tres... Jazz was IMO the better release. Neat interludes, more songs and two discs and also released in 1999. But this is solid and will probably run you cheaper than that one. Also, there is a Bossa Mundo remix album that does cuts off of this and Bossa Tres... Jazz. And finally, there was another release: "Bossa Tres... Jazz - Step into the Gallery" that was released in the US as "Bossa Mundo II". It's quite good, similar sound with new artists. If you dig these - check out Glucklich III. If you dig Bossa Mundo II - definitely check out Glucklich V. And of course, take a look at ESL's Jet Society if this sound is for you, along with Faze Action's "Pure Braziliance" and Brazilectro II.

If God took time off from her busy schedule to make a compilation of modern Brazilian music, I think it would sound something like this. This CD flows so perfectly that it must have been divinely inspired! A perfect mix between uptempo and chill tracks, vocal and instrumental. Just when a song starts to settle into something predictable, some amazing sounds (usually percussion) are introduced to lift the song to the next level. ...

A friend of mine lent this album to me today, and I was so impressed by it that I wanted to share with everyone how incredible this CD is. This CD isn't mixed, there's a disclaimer on the back that all the tracks have been "edited" except for one, and the longest track is only six minutes long, but this CD still plays gorgeously. You can tell that each track is special just from the first few seconds. There's a wide range of percussion-based tracks on this CD, some a little more on the minimalistic side, and some that border on full-blown disco. Some songs calm you, some songs can't help but make you get out of your chair and dance. The FK & Eric Kupper mix of Tom & Joyce's classic "Vai Minha Tristeza" is an absolutely *perfect* song. The vocals are clean and inviting, and the disco funk acid jazz overtones just push it over the top. Equally as energetic and groovy is the MAW mix of Yasushi Ide's "Plein Soleil". This song is infectious in ways you can't even understand until you hear its carefully crafted music and sweet vocals blend into a sound that's as close to bliss as you can get. Kyoto Jazz Massive's "Nacer Do Sol" makes me long to chill on the beach watching a perfect sunset. All of the other tracks on the album are excellent, too, and my only complaint is that I wish a lot of these songs were longer... they come to an end just when you feel like you could get lost in them forever. For anyone big on percussion, world house, or just looking for something different from the flood of boring mix CDs on the market, I think you'll find a hidden gem here that strikes the right chord with you.

Yeah, Lenny Dee may have mixed morals but he did know how to mix some blastin hardcore back in the day. Ive been in the scene for some years now and it brings me fond memories of smashing bottles over my head and such. Some dank hard acid in the first couple trax, but Bloody Fist lashes down the beat as well as D.O.A. and Delta 9. The 2nd CD has two terrorizing trax by Liza Eliaz and Manu Malin. Good Stuff.

    D Train's You're The One For Me has received some updated remixes over it's 24 year (as of his writing) life. It seems to have escaped me that this song got some '93 remixes. I am aware of the '94 remixes by CCN which stayed faithful to the song's original styling while adding some new drums and percussion.

    I like all of the remixes this song has received thus far, none of which I have heard have rendered this song unrecognizable. Here, the Dimitri and the Bassic Remxies add a few different elements but the original instruments are still on board. NOTE: Track one is NOT the original mix by Francios Kevorkian. It is actually the Paul Hardcastle remix which came out in about 1986. Hardcastle was the first to remix this song after it's hey-day.

    Ending out the disc is the radio edit of the Francois Kevorkian original mix from 1981.
