The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Simply beautiful.......2007-01-11
Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!
CD has missing track.......2006-12-03
John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.
I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.
Disappointed.......2006-11-10
I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.
Worth Buying!.......2006-11-06
Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.
Great Album.......2006-11-04
For me, one of the best music of last decade. Romantic, full of sense. Please give a listen at least

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03
This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Veruca Salt were a band torn between catchy pop hooks and arena rock dreams. Producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crüe) tried to help them realize the "big" sound with mixed success. Now, he's helping former Veruca Salt singer-guitarist Nina Gordon turn away from "big rock" and toward the lush power pop championed by musicians like Aimee Mann. The title track, "Now I Can Die," and "2003" feature stacked harmonies and a carefree gait that recall the melodic renaissance of early-'80s new wave, with the additional bite of modern-day production values. Hammond B-3s, pedal steels, Mellotrons, and Chamberlins add somber texture to "Horses in the City" and "Hold On to Me" without sacrificing the straight-ahead rock feel. Producer Rock adds a bit too much gloss here and there, but in any case Gordon's a power-pop diva in waiting. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Come for the Veruca Salt, stay for the Aimee Mann.......2007-06-08
I was a fan of Veruca Salt, so I just had to get Nina Gordon's first solo album. It has a lot of the pop sensibility of her old band, but her songwriting and singing seem to have grown quite a bit. I realized, however, that so much of what I like about the album comes from a very strong Aimee Mann influence (particularly the early 90s I'M WITH STUPID). If I remember correctly, there's even some personnel or a producer in common. The stand-out tracks are "Fade to Black" and "New Year's Eve."
nothing much different here, move along.......2007-03-04
First off, as qualifiers, I am a big fan of Veruca Salt. I am also interested in lots of different female vocalists ranging from 'kill all rock stars' grungy to highly produced Avril. There is a point in listening to the highly produced stuff when you ask yourself a couple of questions: "what is unique about this song/album/style" and for me especially is there any "catch song"--one that stands out on the first listen, that you want to listen to over and over, and holds your interest into the rest of the album. Avril had "complicated", Juliana Hatfield had "my sister", Veruca Salt had "seether". Sometimes these songs are the released singles, sometimes they are not. I listened to this album twice looking for the song. It is not here. Like a previous reviewer, I guess I liked "badway" the best, and the album did seem to pick up a bit near the end---but not enough to move it over to my ipod. MY general opinion of this is "produced to the point where there is nothing unique left". I paid a penny for this album, so I don't feel put out. And- I also purchased Nina's second album... which at least from my 30 sec listens, I will probably find more to my liking.
Really good!.......2006-10-24
Catchy/melodic songs. Great lyrics. Great singing - Nina's pitch is perfect, as well as her vibrato, no matter what the dynamic is. She can rock out or do a 180 and tap into her sweet, feminine side. Stacy Jones on drums, no need to say any more. Oh, and I love Veruca Salt too!
"I could leave but what for?".......2006-05-14
Nina Gordon's Tonight and the Rest of my Life is former Veruca Salt's first solo record and it is great! Standout tracks include: Hate Your Way, Now I can Die, Hold on to Me, Badway, Number One Camera, New Year's Eve, and the title-track. Gordon's voice and songwriting is incredible, but how come she hasn't released a new album in the last six years? Please Nina, we want a new album from you! This album is produced by Bob Rock, he also produced Veruca Salt's second album, Eight arms to hold you. Defintely get this gorgeous and profound album, Nina is a goddess!
Sing-along heaven.......2006-04-27
Gordon sounds like she's channelling Karen Carpenter on several of the songs on this album, including the title song, which sounds like a long-lost Carpenters song. To make the references more explicit, Gordon chooses to cover a Carpenters song, "The End Of The World", for her album closer. Ironically, she sounds less like Karen on this number than on others, and this song is probably the weakest spot on the album. There are only a couple of numbers ("Badway", "Number One Camera") that will remind people of her old band, Veruca Salt. Mostly, this is a collection of tunes so catchy, and sung so sweetly, that you may ignore the trite lyrics to sing along.

Album Description
The soothing voice and music on this CD create a restful oasis in which to relax and fall asleep. The Sleep Easy CD is especially helpful when you are wound up from the stresses of living. It helps calm the overly busy mind, soothe the emotions, and relax the body. The CD contains both the Sleep Easy guided meditation with music in the background, as well as a track of music alone which can be used at any time for its relaxing effect. The insert that comes with the CD includes "Principles to Sleep By" which provide a backdrop to help with sleep.
Mary and Richard Maddux were inspired to create this CD by reports that many people were using their Ease of Being CD to relax at bedtime. This new CD was designed to be especially conducive to falling asleep and resting deeply.
Customer Reviews:
Delivered what it promised.......2007-06-02
My husband & I were both undergoing a lot of stress that made it very difficult to fall asleep. We didn't want to take medications. I was skeptical of a CD being able to put us to sleep but I was desperate so I ordered this one. From the sample I heard on Amazon, Mary's voice sounded very soothing and the music was soft and soothing as well - not the case with some of the other CDs I sampled. The first night we tried it, we both fell asleep before the music ended. I don't even know if I was paying attention to what Mary actually said because it was her voice, not the words that was so relaxing. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is having difficulty falling asleep, or even if you're just stressed out and need to relax. I think I will probably try some of their other CDs.
Unique and Helpful for Sleep.......2007-01-02
This CD is a different approach to sleep, but one that I found very effective. This goes beyond just a relaxing meditation to a deeper process that allows you to change your unconscious patterns that get in the way of sleep. At first, I didn't notice much, but after listening a few more times, my sleep was deeper and more refreshing. Good alternative if other approaches are not working.
I Fall Asleep Faster, Sleep Quality Improved.......2006-11-18
I am encouraged by how quickly I drifted off to sleep, faster than I usually can. The music is wonderful and soothing, and the voice is gentle and reassuring. I also notice a definite change in the quality of my sleep. It seems deeper and less easily disturbed. On days after using the CD the night before I feel more relaxed and refreshed.
Donated it to the library........2006-11-10
We didn't like it.
The seller was great, got it to us ASAP.
Very enjoyable, very effective.......2006-06-19
I have used this CD now for about three months. It is not only very pleasant to listen to, it is also very intelligent. Mary suggests that you not 'try' to sleep, but just relax and pay attention to your body and thoughts. As you do this, you slowly relax more and more until you effortlessly slip into sleep.
Now, when I lay down to sleep, I automatically start to scan my body, readjust my position until I feel comfortable, and observe my thoughts. As I do this, I often fall asleep without the CD.
Highly recommended.

Brilliant work.......2006-09-06
A must listen for any David Bromberg fan. Masterful guitar work, classic Bromberg.
Vintage Bromberg.......2000-10-08
I saw David Bromberg in concert many times in the 70's at Devon PA. He had a great mix of blues and rock that I enjoyed immensely. This CD is wonderful and I've been playing it over and over since I bought it. It's truly vintage Bromberg and I feel like I'm sitting there in the concert in the round at Devon again when it plays. "Sharon" is my favorite. Terrific CD. You won't be disappointed.
You haven't got Blues collection until you got a Bromberg........1999-10-19
Like many Bromberg fans of the 70's I have been waiting for these albums to come out on CD. David Bromberg, who has played backup on a coupla dozen albums is one of the genuises of the string instrumnet. His clear picking of Guitar, bass, banjo or ukelele is up there with any master player and his work often surpasses those same masters in unexpected ways. These have to heard to be appreciated. His albums are a great mixture of blues, rock, and bluegrass with a voice that can switch from sad to angry to funny as fast as he can switch chords. But David is at his best live. Where he can even make you tap and stomp and dance to the bluesiest of ballads. "Sharon" and "Keys to the Highway" are just a coupla examples. This is an album to work to or enjoy in a long trip when you need to belt out a tune with some heart. Enjoy this album I swear you won't be disappointed.
Don't let this deal go down with out you.......1999-10-06
I had been waiting for the all acoustic "My own house" to come out on CD for years. What a bonus to get David's live album attached to it. This takes me back to the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver in the late 70's. This man can play-Everything he touches- with such passion and mastery it is a shame that he no longer tours. Highlights include "Don't let your Deal go down", and "Yankee's Revenge" for some great picking, the touching instrumental "Sheebeg and Sheemore", along with "Spanish Johnny" perhaps the best song on the album, and a great Live rendition of "As years go passing by". Thanks David for putting on one of the best shows I had the privilege to be a part of over the past thirty years. This CD is a great way to remember those days.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10
Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.
Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.
Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.
This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.
"one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26
Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors
Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.
The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Bernadette Peters's Sondheim Etc. Etc. is, naturally, an addendum of additional material that was not included in Sondheim Etc., the initial recording of her December 9, 1997, Carnegie Hall concert to benefit the Gay Men's Health Crisis. We always figured there was more, especially considering that the original CD mirrored a lot of her 90-minute DVD, Bernadette Peters Live in Concert, which was recorded a year later at London's Royal Festival Hall. And sure enough, a number of songs from London appear on Sondheim Etc. Etc., including her pig Latin rendition of "We're in the Money" (a device originated by Ginger Rogers), songs from her solo albums (the oldie "If You Were the Only Boy" and Peter Allen's "I Never Thought I'd Break" from Bernadette and the country standard "Faithless Love" from I'll Be Your Baby Tonight), and two beautiful and moving songs that would make anyone's list of Bernadette's greatest hits, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Unexpected Song" (from Song and Dance) and Stephen Sondheim's "Children Will Listen" (from Into the Woods). And because Sondheim is the prevailing theme of the evening, she also sings the gorgeous "With So Little to Be Sure Of" (also from the London DVD) and "Later." The 52-minute program does include a lot of chatter, which will charm some listeners and bore others. But there's also a lovely encore of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," after which Peters wishes her audience a good night. Even if the song selection isn't quite as strong as on the original CD, it's great to have more of the concert available. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
What a voice!.......2007-03-15
We were fortunate enough to see Bernadette in concert in Medford, Oregon, and loved her performance. We couldn't wait to order both of her Carnegie Hall CDs. We were not disappointed. Wow, what a voice that lady has been blessed with!
Perfection.......2007-01-16
Most of the songs included on this CD are superior to Peters' original 1997 CD of highlights from this benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. Given that that CD was superb, this one only enhances Ms. Peters reputation as a technically skilled and deeply interpretive singing actress. And her inner warmth toward her audience radiates throughout. Having seen her at the encore of the Broadway revival of "Gypsy", raising funds for Actor's Equity Fights Aids in the most genteel, warm and ingratiating style one can imagine, it's obvious this performer has respect for and appreciates her audience. Now. let's get to the music.
Peters is in exceptional voice throughout and some of these lesser known songs display her uniquely personal yet humorous style of interpreting a song's meaning, always a special treat with this lady. Using Ginger Roger's pig-latin rendition of "We're in the Money" is a canny way to begin this CD, and it immediately warms listener to performer, but the best is yet to come. Her rendition of "Unexpected Song" from her Tony-winning role in "Song and Dance" surpasses the one on the original cast recording and is immediately followed buy an exquisitely reorchestrated version of "Faithless Love" from her mid-90s disc, a beautiful example of her growth as a mature vocalist. Stunning.
And the surprises keep coming. Peter Allen's "I Never Thought I'd Break" from her late 70s solo debut is an unexpectedly moving and beautifully interpreted song that proves Allen was more than glitz and glamour. She also sings Stephen Sondheim's little known "(They Ask Me Why) I Believe in You" in such a stirring manner you think you've always known this atypical Sondheim song. Of special note, she renders the rarely sung "Later" from Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" in a manner that exposes both her vocal expertise (listen to that sustained high note!) and her instinctive humor. A real treat.
Finally, she closes the concert with an audience participation rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" because this concert originally occurred in December, 1996. It's so warmly delivered (by everyone) that even though I bought this CD in July, it immediately put me in the Christmas spirit.
The bottom line about this CD is that Bernadette Peters has never been presented on a recording in all of her facets as effectively as this disc does. One of the great ones.
CD to watch.......2006-07-22
Think Bernadette Peters must be preferably watched while she is singing.Yet, this cd is worth buying. Search for DVD edition better.
It's good, but it could have been much better.......2005-09-04
If you love Bernadette Peters, you'll love this CD. However, her original Carnegie Hall album is much better than this one. I will never understand why they didn't release the entire concert as a double CD in 1997 (especially since a full-length DVD of the performance has been available for years). Instead they picked the best highlights from the show for the first CD, and then eight years later they decided to throw the rest of the selections onto another CD. The result is that both CDs lack continuity and the first CD is much better than this one. That being said, however, this IS Bernadette Peters we're talking about, and there is no such thing as a "weak" Bernadette Peters performance. The songs on "Live at Carnegie Hall (The Rest of It)" are all classic Bernadette, and they're all fabulous: "Unexpected Song" and "Children Will Listen" are two of my favorites, along with the lovely encore of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." The album would be even better, however, if it had been released eight years ago along with the rest of the songs that Bernadette performed during that memorable concert at Carnegie Hall.
Almost BETTER than the first one!.......2005-09-01
I really love Bernadette Peters singing Sondheim. She is also one of the very few singers I'd listen to for voice alone when the material isn't that interresting in itself.
Here we have a few more Sondheim tunes - "Later" is worth the price of the album itself. "I Believe In You" have been recorded other places, but not as beautiful as here. "With So Little To Be Sure Of" is a gorgeous song, here combined with the more dull "Children Will Listen".
Of all Peters' renditions I've heard of "Unexpected Song", I think this is the best. It is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest songs.
The rest of the album consists of less interresting material, but is still awfully nice to listen to. As with the first Sondheim, Etc, I'd recommend getting to know the songs in their original context, then immediately buy this gem!

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

I bought this CD after watching the music video of the same name. Their performance of "dream a dream" is exquisite. The fact that they wrote the lyrics just adds icing to an already magnificent cake!

A must-have for Christmas music lovers.......2006-12-07
this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.
Gorgeous! .......2005-12-07
Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

Wicked, wicked, wicked..........2007-02-13
Ozzy's first record with guitarist Zakk Wylde is, without a doubt, a marked improvement over the unashamedly "hair metal" sounding, utterly disappointing "The Ultimate Sin", released only three years prior to this. Indeed, after scaring the hell out of everybody by jumping into the (according to the definition of a dear friend of mine...)"filthy glam metal" bandwagon (and not only musically, but visually too...oh boy, those clothes, that hair...the horror, the horror...), Ozzy decided to go back to its trademark skull-bashing, bone crunching brand of rock, and he found in Zakk a great foil to achieve this. Completing his recording lineup at the time were drummer Randy Castillo (finally given free reign to pound on his drums like there's no tomorrow, and even to contribute to the songwriting), longtime collaborator Bob Daisley on bass and John Sinclair on keyboards. Contrary to popular belief, bassist Geezer Butler was not involved in the process, but rather joined the band for the subsequent tour. Gone is the horrible, slick, smooth production of Ron Nevison. Legendary producer Roy Thomas Baker (known for his work with Queen) was originally tapped for the project, but after only a short time in the studio, he just couldn't see eye to eye with Ozzy on the direction of the album, and ultimately Keith Olsen stepped in.
His first task was to "fix" the sound of the material already recorded, which to Ozzy lacked punch (especially on the drums), and then record some new, even punchier material. And he succeeded in both, creating an album that was closer to the wall of guitars approach of his first 2 solo albums. Some of the strongest cuts, placed in the first "half" of the album, were selected as singles: guitar heavy tracks "Breaking all the Rules" and "Crazy Babies" make little sense lyrically but are a great deal of fun; "Devil's Daughter" is another great tune that is fast and heavy and dumb, but great for headbanging and chockfull with great guitar; probably the weakest track is opener "Miracle Man", a direct attack to Jimmy Swaggart and other T.V evangelists who had often targeted Ozzy, making him the very definition of "evil" and using him as an scape goat, so it was only fitting that given such a brilliant opportunity, Ozz wouldn't pass up the chance to have a swing on him; but the resulting song, while quite explicit and effective lyrically, is fairly generic from the musical point of view.
The same can be said about some of the material of the latter half of the album: "Bloodbath in Paradise" and "Tattooed Dancer" are fast and hard hitting, sure, but a little too topical and typical. That's not to say that they're bad, but they aren't the best tunes in here; "Demon Alcohol" is better simply because it deals with a topic that Ozzy knows all too well, and therefore rings true to the listener. "Fire in the Sky" slows down the pace somewhat, and while it's not one of my favorite tracks, I must admit that is has an interesting structure and it is an interesting, if somewhat odd, departure from the tried and true. Finally, "Hero" was a "hidden" bonus track that appeared on the 95 remaster, and it is quite a nice addition to the set and a great closing tune. This new 2002 remaster, however, graces us with 2 more cuts: "Liar" and a live version of "Miracle Man"; the latter has little interest, especially for those who have either the "Just Say Ozzy" and/or "Live and Loud" live sets, since the versions of that song included in those 2 releases are far better and have better sound, too. "Liar" is a real disappointment: the liner notes claim that it comes from the same recording sessions, but the sound is altogether different from the rest of the CD, which can be explained by one of two possibilities: it is either a demo, or one of the tracks from the "Roy Thomas Baker" sessions that wasn't remixed. It sounds tiny and lackluster in comparison with the rest of the material. And what the hell is the deal with that vocal melody, anyway? It keeps changing and changing and ultimately it never gets anywhere!! Its inclusion here is a mistake as it adds nothing to the original release, and it is justified purely as a marketing ploy to entice Ozzy fans into buying the album yet again.
Not the most essential Ozzy release, but in the end a satisfying one that put the Madman back on track and more importantly, I believe, set the groundwork for the next record, "No More Tears", a true rock masterpiece. Think of it as a blueprint of sorts: all the elements that would make NMT a classic are here, although not fully realized. Some of its songs may not have aged as well, but if you enjoy(ed) "No More Tears" hard hitting, take no prisoners sound, you'll probably like this one as well.
Ending the 80's on a high note.......2005-12-01
I love "No Rest For the Wicked" and believe it's one of Ozzy's most underrated albums (along with "Bark At the Moon").
Zack Wylde proved he was more than a worthy successor to Jake E. Lee, jamming with the master himself and laying down some deep tracks and outstanding guitar work.
My favorite cut here is "Miracle Man." A thinly veiled busting of disgraced TV preacher Jimmy Swaggart's stones, one line has never failed to make me snicker every time I hear it: "Now Jimmy he got busted with his pants down, repent ye wretched sinners, self righteous clown" (Swaggart was among the crop of TV preachers who pounced on Ozzy throughout the 80's, calling him everything but his mother's child). Ahh, revenge can be so sweet.
One tune that I was disappointed with was "Bloodbath In Paradise," which glorified Charles Manson. Then again, there was a trend in the 80's in glorifying murderers.
Ozzy always has a penchant for writing songs that everyday people can relate to, such as with "Demon Alcohol."
One fact that must be noted: The original album only contained 8 songs - from "Miracle Man" to "Demon Alcohol." "Hero" was a bonus track on the tape (it wasn't on the album or the then-new technology of cds).
In all, "No Rest..." is definitely worth the effort. Ozzy ended the decade on a high note and he only continued the momentum in the 90's.
Ozzy's final album of the eighties is another fine addition to his catalogue.......2005-11-12
No Rest For The Wicked (1988.) Ozzy Osbourne's fifth solo studio album.
INTRODUCTION:
The late eighties were a time for Ozzy Osbourne to reinvent himself once again. Jake E. Lee, the guitar player he had on his previous two solo albums, had finally left to form his own group, Badlands. Needing a replacement, Ozzy recruited bar band guitarist Zakk Wylde. In this same era, Ozzy released the Randy Rhoads Tribute live album. By using those old recordings, the Ozzman was able to rekindle his popularity in the minds of some of the fans who had forgotten him. Doing that release was a fitting beginning to a new era. With original Ozzy solo band bassist Bob Daisley back in the band, Ozzy released No Rest For The Wicked in 1988. Read on for my review.
OVERVIEW:
Ozzy Osbourne released No Rest For The Wicked in 1988. As usual, Ozzy and his band produced the album. The band on this album featured Bob Daisley on bass, Randy Castillo on drums, and newcomer Zakk Wylde on guitar. Album tracklist features Miracle Man, Devil's Daughter (Holy War), Crazy Babies, Breakin' All The Rules, Bloodbath In Paradise, Fire In The Sky, Tattooed Dancer, and Demon Alcohol.
REVIEW:
I'm sure a lot of people were beginning to have doubts about the stability of Ozzy's solo career by the time the late eighties rolled around. He was never able to keep a stable band formation, and his sound shifted frequently. Despite this, in the eighties, he was always able to keep an excellent, hard rock sound all his own. And Zakk Wylde's debut with Ozzy demonstrates this age-old point beautifully. This is Ozzy's final and least popular album of the eighties, mostly due to the fact that there were very few popular songs featured here. Still, Ozzy managed to create an album that while uniquely Ozzy, managed to sound substantially different and diverse from his prior works. Let's take a look at the tracklist of this gem of an album.
-SIDE A-
-Miracle Man: The opening track on this album is probably the most popular thing represented here. Being the first song on the album, and being that this was the first album feautring Zakk Wylde on lead guitar, this song was many people's introduction to Wylde. And it makes for quite the introduction, both to him, and to the album. He rocks hard on this song. Combine that with the classic musical stylings you know and love Ozzy for, and you've got one hell of a song on your hands.
-Devil's Daughter (Holy War): Here we go from one hard rocker right over to another hard rocker. Although it is a hard rocker, like the first song on the album, this one does sound substantially different. Zakk Wylde's riffs are awesome, and Ozzy's lyrics are excellent as usual. Definitely another underrated Ozzy cut.
-Crazy Babies: This is one of the few songs on the album that gained some minor popularity, and once you listen to it, it isn't hard to see why. It's a hard and heavy rocker, but it has a touch of a glam metal sound it. The end result is a song that is very fun to listen you - more likely than not, you'll get a big kick out of this one if you're an Ozzy fan.
-Breakin' All The Rules: Take the classic Ozzy lyric stylings that you know and love him before and combine them with some of Zakk Wylde's hardest and heaviest guitar playing of all, and this song is the result. Once again, the end result of Ozzy's band's efforts is a solid rocker that any Ozzy fan is likely to enjoy.
-SIDE B-
-Bloodbath In Paradise: One of my all-time favorite Ozzy songs, and one of the songs on here that should have gotten a lot more credit. Some people say it's about the Vietnam war, some people say it's about the Charles Manson murders. Regardless of what it's about, this song flat-out rules. Once again we've got Zakk Wylde at his hardest and heaviest, as well as some very creative lyrics on Ozzy's part. The hard rocking guitar on this song is arguably Zakk Wylde's finest perfomance. If there's one song on this album I could waste the entire review going on and on about, it's this one. But don't worry, I don't plan on doing that. Well, I'm gonna stop praising this song before I start to ramble.
-Fire In The Sky: The good majority of the songs on this album are straight-up hard rockers, so this song makes for a refreshing change to the formula. It's slower than the other songs on the album, and while it does feature some hard-rocking Zakk Wylde riffs, the song is considerably more melodic than the other ones featured on the album. The end result is something that is both heavy and melodic at the same time - not a thing many artists can do well! Very nice song.
-Tattooed Dancer: After that refreshing dip into a semi-melodic sound, we get right back to the hard and heavy. One thing you've probably noticed about this album is that I praise Zakk Wylde constantly. Once again, for this track, I am obligated to do so again. It's straight-up hard rock with a sound that is uniquely eighties and uniquely Ozzy. Good stuff.
-Demon Alcohol: The closing track on the album is another damn fine one. The instrumental stylings are reminiscent of Motorhead, and to be entirely honest, there were times on this song when I was expecting Lemmy to come out singing it! Needless to say, that never happened, but still, I can totally picture Motorhead performing this one. Hard and heavy, this is definitely one of the most underrated solo songs that Ozzy ever recorded.
OVERALL:
Overall, I think Ozzy Osbourne's final release of the eighties is definitely the most underrated studio album he ever put out. If you're a die-hard fan of Ozzy and you want to get all of his albums, don't overlook this one and its predecessor, The Ultimate Sin. Both of these albums are wrongfully-neglected gems that every big-time Ozzy fans needs to add to their collections. Don't start with either of these albums if you're new to Ozzy, but if you're already a tried and true fan, by all means hunt them down.
EDITION NOTES:
Most of Ozzy's solo catalogue got reissued in 2002. While the first three solo studio albums were wrongfully tampered with, the other reissues are excellent. The reissues of the other studio albums feature excellently-remastered sound, improved liner notes, restored original album cover art, and even some hard-to-find bonus tracks! Needless to say, if you plan on getting the Ozzy solo studio albums from No Rest For The Wicked onward, make sure you get the remastered ones!
Another great "hair metal" album from Ozzy.......2005-10-26
After 1986's hair metal album The Ultimate Sin album Guitarist Jake E. Lee quit and Bassist Phil Soussan quit the band and were replaced by Zakk Wylde and Bob Daisley...how was the album?
1.Miracle Man- 10/10 A great catchy fast opener with an awesome riff and a blazing solo. Some interesting lyrics about Jimmy Swaggert. A good rocker overall.
2.Devil's Daughter (Holy War)- 10/10 4 great riffs in this song! Some creepy lyrics and vocals at the start of the song. The only problem with this song is the hair metal chorus which doesn't quite fit but the great solo by Zakk Wylde makes up for that. Zakk's tapping in this song is just excellent.
3.Crazy Babies- 8/10 A great trademark Zakk Wylde riff with some great pinch harmonics. The lyrics here are really what brings this song down. A good party type song from Ozzy here as Ozzy continues the hair metal sound. Another excellent solo from Zakk Wylde too!
4.Breakin' All the Rules- 10/10 HANDS DOWN THE BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM! It has everything a MONSTER riff, Excellent Vocals, Another Monster Riff, Excellent Drummer, A great guitar fill in, Awesome Lyrics, A catchy chorus, And An AMAZING Solo From Zakk who shreds away and bends the guitar around like no one else. This is no doubt the heaviest "hair metal" riff ever! The ending part of the song is great too with a demonic sounding voice coming it.
5.Bloodbath in Paradise- Creepy intro with the backwards words! And 2 more MONSTER riffs from Zakk. Brilliant lyrics about the Mansen family murders! Ozzy's vocals are great once again too. Ozzy stays away from the hair metal thing completley with this fast track. Another great blazing solo from Zakk who shreds away like no one else once again.
6.Fire in the Sky- 10/10 A great melodic riff for this softer melodic track from Ozzy. A great riff during the bridge which leads into another brilliant solo from Zakk Wylde!
7.Tattooed Dancer- 9/10 Another monster riff from Zakk which leads into a fast paced rocker with amazing drummeing.
8.Demon Alcohol- 10/10 Some more monster riffs here! One of the best songs on the album with some great lyrics. The lyrics are kind of like a follow up to Suicide Solution in a way. This much faster and much more catchy and has another monster solo. One verse is "Don't Speak Of Suicide Solutions"
9.Hero- 9/10 A very commercial song...not much really goes on in this one but it's still a good song with interesting lyrics.
Overall this is a very good album. A bit heavier than The Ultimate Sin but this album didn't sell quite aswell. if you like Ozzy than get this album because this is vintage Ozzy.
Ozzy Osbourne- Vocals
Zakk Wylde- Guitar
Randy Castillo- Drums
Bob Daisley- Bass
