5 out of 5 stars Japanese Telecom: wonderful surprise(s).......2000-09-30

If you had found a perfect melody. Wouldn't you want to hear it over and over again and again to take inmost deep possess of it? Isn't this usually done with a great riff. Well why then does "Asian Amazons" after half a minute end to make way for the aggressive psychomotoric stimulans "Character Maps"? What does the artist want to express with "Game Player", the most seducingly dull computer utterance ever heard? Why is the "Rising Sun" accompanied by harsh FM noises. Don't "Kubi" and "Japanese Animation" form the greatest contrast. ...

There seems no end to the questions the irritations of this album arouse. Who knows the previous works of this artist (under various aliases) may notice great progress and advance taken in this new output. For all others who don't know I have to recommend this as one of the greatest electronic music albums of all times - don't be scared by the relative inaccessabilty which even after many listens remains in the form of a certain capriciousness. Yes this record lives. (The remixes are a different situation) ...

Interestingly, Japanese people I played the record to could not find anything Japanese to it. Whatever way the inspiration took place, the references remain cliché. But hence the surrounding design (songtitles etc; also regarding the artist's ambiguous play with German references, under an other wellknown alias), there is an intention behind this attitude which isn't interested in explicitness: what can be found in this work is not (as usual in todays's music) attempts at universally applicable statements (here towards modern eastern culture) mostly watered down through the limits of individual(s), but something much more valuable (to me it's invaluable): an artist's very personal impressions, thoughts and feelings packed into the universally understandeable language of very music.

(Isn't this much more than you'd usually expect from today's (especially electronic) music?)

4 out of 5 stars Tasty.......2004-11-30

In this recording of all jazz standards, Kurt Rosenwinkle provides a number of fresh, tasty solos which make listening to this CD a pleasure. Unfortunately, the piano player isn't quite up to speed on this date, playing a little behind the beat and struggling a bit on his solos. Most people probably won't even notice, however, as the guitarist more than makes up for this slight deficiency with his distinctive sound and deft playing. KR excels especially on the last track, "Conception," which is worth the price of the disk all on its own.
All in all, a date which is sure to please straight-ahead jazz lovers and, perhaps, may influence cross-over audiences to delve further into the rich, century-old tradition of jazz music.

4 out of 5 stars the early step.......2001-09-09

"The Next Step" was my first KR album. KR does stand out from the rests as he chooses his notes to speak, rather than just going over some chord changes. In this (mostly) standard songs, he and the band managed to bring the music up the average jam session by their ability and mastery on their respective instruments. It still has the jam session feeling, enough balance of relax-tension to make it a good album.

5 out of 5 stars If everyone was crazy,then . . . well they wouldn't be crazy.......2000-05-07

I believe that it is every jazz artist's obligation to release a disc in the vein of traditional jazz to display that his/her talent doesn't lie merely within the boundaries of a style that they themselves created. The traditional jazz album is a way of putting all on an equal plane to be measured and Kurt Rosenwinkle measures up to my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING and CUTTING EDGE!.......2000-01-02

This is with out a doubt, one of my favorite albums. Kurt's playing is fresh and inventive. I was impressed with his treatment of standards and his unique improvisational approach.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......1999-06-06

I saw K.R. live a few years ago with Ben Street and it sounded great....very fun jazz...like Marc Johnson or Bill Frisell. This album was not at all what I expected.

It might just be a matter of personal taste....this was way way too "straight ahead" "wynton marsalis-like". He's a great musician... ....I just didn't like this album.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "I Hope" everyone checks out this album!.......2004-09-28

Just as the title suggest, "I Hope" is filled with songs that uplift both the mind and spirit. It gets better every time I play it. Dan Tyler has really captured the heart and soul
of America. After listening to the album, you'll agree with track #3 that "Even the Bad Times Are Good!"

5 out of 5 stars Words and music that truly come together.......2004-09-18

This CD is poetry set to music. You can literally sense the warm Pacific breeze as you listen to Costa Rica and feel a profound sense of inspiration with the title track, I Hope. I wouldn't take a road trip without this CD loaded into my player.

    5 out of 5 stars Tyler's "I Hope" Gives Hope.......2004-09-17

I have actually received and listened to Dan Tyler's album in it's entirety and I have to say it is definitely worth listening to. Dan Tyler weaves a web of hope with positive and uplifting lyrics and a story telling style reminiscent of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and the like.

"Costa Rica" sends one back to a time when the world wasn't full of stories about war and bombings to a place where life is simpler and people are nicer and the times they aren't a changing. I Am The River winds through a tale of a boy who comes toward "awakening" to realize that life is a gift and our environment is something to be protected. I Hope, the title track, is a great song of a man's reflection on truth, love, and faith as hopefully being the qualities that one will be judged by when we come to the end of our life. When Will I is a treatise on finding peace, acceptance and freedom from fear in our lives. The Light in Your Eyes, I recognized as being sung by LeAnn Rimes, several years ago. It's nice to hear the songwriter put his heart into the song and release his own version. Love Remains simply recognizes when all things come and go, what is left is the Love we give and receive... and on and on and on...

One can just get lost on a weekend afternoon listening to Dan Tyler's musical stories, such that at the end you'll probably just have to start over again. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars I honestly thought this was a parody album.......2004-09-01

You remember that guy you knew in college? He soemtimes hung out with the hippie kids because they were a good source of pot, but stopped doing this because he kept laughing at them every time he got high. Remember when he started singing parodies of their stupid folk songs one night in the cafeteria and they were so funny that you shot root beer out of your nose?

A lot of this album sounds like those hysterical parodies of godawful protest-folk songs that your friend used to make you snarf carbonated beverages.

But it would seem that Dan Tyler isn't joking. And that is really sad. But still mockable.

There's a song about Costa Rica not having an army.
    HOLY MOLY THAT IS PROFOUND.

There's a song about how politicians lie.
DUDE I DID NOT KNOW THAT THANK YOU MR. TYLER MY EYES ARE NOW OPEN.

There's a song he sings from the point of view of a river.
OH WOW MAN THAT REALLY OPENS MY EYES I AM SORRY I DUMPED USED MOTOR OIL IN YOU AND THEN PEED IN YOU SIR.

This review is based on repeatedly being assaulted with clips from this album in ads broadcast on Air America. The fact that the boneheads at Air America think that just because I lean left in my politics I want to listen to either crap activist folk-tunes or Janeane Garofalo's shrill sniveling makes me understand why conservatives mock liberals.

I just saw DJ Assault live in KY. He brings a great stage presence, and his set was great. I bought his CD (not found on Amazon, it's ghetto tech isle 2) and it was nothing like his set. The CD is filled with basic beats and simple hooks and rhymes. It is nice to see something diff. in electronic music, but it could be better.

Off the Chain for the Y2k is a very fine full set by DJ Assault (except the first three tracks, which are excellent stand-alone "bonus" tracks). I cannot recommend this album too highly to anyone looking for good, fast techno. I offer that recommendation with the following subtext - DJ Assault is RAW. Look at his song titles and listen to the samples. If you are still smiling when you are done, do not hesitate to get this album and put it on repeat. If you find the titles and samples to be the worst sort of misogynist obscenity, you are correct - go buy this album anyway and listen to it until you feel differently.

In addition to the core trio of Eileen, Aaron, and Daniel, Intuit's latest recording effort includes Andrew Davis on flute and harmonica, and Gina Rossi on congas. Universal Themes features a killer trance dance remix of the title track as the last song on the album, also produced by Chris Seifert.
