Product Description

Traditional Chinese instruments meet Hip-Hop & Jazz. An experiment in cross-cultural soundscapes, The Shanghai Restoration Project draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands, an early combination of East and West that's become an international legend. The Project revives this exotic blend by introducing Eastern instruments and rhythms to the Western sounds of hip-hop, jazz, and pop. The Shanghai Restoration Project debuted as MSN Music's "New Artist of the Week" in early 2006 and became the #1 selling electronic album on the site during the month of January. Since then, it has appeared in iTunes' Top 20 Electronic Albums in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Europe, and Japan. To date, tracks from the project have been featured in various advertisements, television shows, and promotions. In November 2006, the project was featured as the "Single of the Week" in iTunes Japan. In early 2007, the introductory track was selected as the theme song for a worldwide advertisement campaign for Kenzo Parfums.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2007-07-03

This album has such a sophisticated sound and it's very creative. I haven't heard a fusion of music like this before. Truly East meets West. I love all the tracks. If you have the chance, make sure you listen to the Reinterpretations album. They've re-recorded a bunch of tracks from the CD.

5 out of 5 stars A simple and exotic blend.......2007-06-08

I heard a sample track of this CD from a friend of mines and love the blend of traditional music, jazz, hip hop and easy listening to this CD. I am glad to have gotten this CD and am waiting for another sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Fusion music at its best!.......2007-05-15

Extending across the genres of jazz, pop, dance, and hip-hop, The Shanghai Restoration Project is a unique offering that blends Chinese traditional instruments with English vocals and Western styling. Bold artistic statements like this are a sign of the future, and really reflect Dave Liang's visionary style and Chinese American background. Avenue Joffre and the various incarnations of Miss Shanghai are my picks for the best "hits" out of the lot, but all of the tracks are particularly well done. A definite buy for anyone who enjoys innovative music!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD.......2007-04-16

This CD is truly fantastic. Their music is fresh, funky yet chilled. There isn't one track I don't like. They are the best, most original new band I've heard in ages.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and Original.......2007-04-12

This album is amazing. Perfect for lounges and relaxing time.
My favorites are: Miss Shanghai, Babylon of the Orient, Lu Xun, Avenue Joffre, Pudong New District and The Bund... Pretty much all the tracks. :)

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Old School house with a little twist.......2005-07-13

This double mix is of old school house tunes. A few of thew are 15 years old now. So yes, to some this CD may sound cheesey or dated. But if taken for what it is, a collection of house songs flawlesly mixed back in 94, then you may truely enjoy it. It has a different energy than todays house music. And let's face it, Collins and Loria are masters at what they do. If you want house music, then give this a try.

2 out of 5 stars House, not Hip Hop.......2000-04-12

This is definitely not hip hop, but tribal house with lots offunky vocals... too funky and cheesy for my taste.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!!!!!!!.......2005-10-12

Reggae was originally marketed as one shot singles to a listening public that craved the latest and favest sounds coming out of the dancehalls and chicken shack studios of Trenchtown. This is a collection of the best from the mid '70's. If you love roots rock reggae and dub masterpieces, before all the cliches were in place, this is where you come. For my money, it gets no finer than this.

    5 out of 5 stars It's a shame that it's gone out of print..........2004-05-28

This album is chock-full of excellent early trip/hop tracks most influenced by jazz and r&b. This (and the Volume 1 edition) introduced me to trip-hop and eventually electronic music in the early 90's, and to this day I still listen to it when I want some mellow but not at all boring or newagey music to chill by. Kruder & Dorfmeister, Massive Attack, Portishead and Hooverphonic fans will probably find this record to their liking.

5 out of 5 stars Most Dope for the Dollar.......1998-09-13

This recording brings drum & bass jungle to a current level of hip-hop awareness with its ability to fuse after-club drive-home twilight fuzzies with down-to-silicon beats even a newbe would appreciate. No played-out Pentium 1 rehash! A serious five-*!

5 out of 5 stars DJ CULTURE IS XTC CULTURE!.......2002-11-22

THIS is without a doubt my favourite Techno CD OUT THERE!! The Single "DJ CULTURE" Was the First Techno Song That Got Me Hooked On to Techno, ever since two years ago, since then I Have been a raving mad lunatic over Blank And Jones buying every cd of theirs I can get! I have had endless workouts with this cd so much that I had to replace my first copy with a second beacuse of wear and tear! Simply Put, If your into Euro Cultured techno, this CD aims to please and you WILL be looking to expand your B&J cd collection!! PLeazzzzure All The Wayy! OK!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but to repetitive.......2001-09-14

"DJ Culture" is a great CD the first time you listen to it, by the second listen you find yourself a little tired of it, and by the third time around you'll be skipping to only the tracks you like. This is not a CD you can listen all the way through, take it from me, I've heard much better efforts from Blank & Jones. "Nightfly" "La Luna" & "Cream" are great progressive trance tracks, but the rest sound too much alike. Sorry guys, I have to say I really hated giving this album 3 stars but like I said in my review for Kardinal Offishall, maybe next time...

        5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AMAZING.......2001-06-02

This cd iz just simply amazing. This iz one of those rare cd's where u kan listen to every track and not get bored. Blank and Jones uses a great variety of beats and melodies which keeps u interested to each and every track. I am so happy i purchased this item and blank and jones iz my number one trance artist. You must get this cd if u dont u are missing out on da best !!

        5 out of 5 stars Blank & Jones Rules!.......2001-05-22

This is a great CD. If you really like good dance music, you must buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album For Trance/Dance Fans.......2001-04-17

Blank & Jones have taken Trance music to a whole new level with "DJ Culture". While it is a wonderfully crafted album, it can get old fast. I got this album because a friend of mine had heard the track "The Nightfly" in a club in Denver and had told me about it and recommended it to me. When I heard the track for the first time I could not help but to get up and start dancing and "The Nightfly" was such a great song it made me go out and start finding more music by Blank & Jones. Soon after I had heard the track "DJ Culture" and I felt that I would have to get the album. Overall the album is great but after repeated listings of it it tends to all sound the same and as I said before can get old quickly.

"A New Culture Is Born" is basically an intro and a weak one at that. It is basically just a bunch of talking and an ocassional drum beat. "The NightFly" is one of those tracks I have yet to get sick of after hearing it thousands of times. The energy of this track will have anyone dancing! "La Luna" is also a High Energy track, but there really isn't anything special about it. "DJ Culture" is another High Energy track that can get anyone moving and is my personal favorite of the album. "The Nightfly (Break Reprise)" is almost the same as the original version but has more of a Break Beat feel instead of a Trance feel. It's a very good mix of the song. The rest of the songs on the album are good but they all tend to sound the same which gets boring after a while. "Waste Your Youth" was good the first time I heard it but now tends to annoy me. All in all this is a good album, it has it's highlights, but, if you are interested in getting the album because of "The Nightfly" or "DJ Culture" then it's not worth the money.

It has moments of incredible beauty, like Sound of Ice, others that are more rock and roll like High Ride and Breaking my Mind and some dancing tunes, (Open The Door, Turn Me On). I Wanna Break Up is in the same vein as Tribulations of LCD Soundsystem which hooked me after the first time I heard it. Sounds like these guys have some potential.

I bought this album 'cause a friend recommended it, someone had lent it to him and man, was I surprised! Whip Culture is some of the best stuff I have heard in a while. Pleasure Generation has lots of new ideas and also brings back some forgotten influences, like Gary Numan and Ultravox. The beginning is total electroclash with a touch of pop. And the lyrics of Turn Me On (two chicks heating themselves up) are pretty intense. Robot Love totally reminded me of 50s sci fi. Its got lots of house, techo rock and Sound of Ice which was super Bowie-esque. If you like Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Deep Dish or Primal Scream, you should definitely own this.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one........2003-09-10

I'm glad Rough Trade are putting these compilaions out. There is a steady stream of Rough Trade Shops discs, this one is made up of songs Rough Trade thinks are the best releases from 2002. It's a mixed bag, as you might have predicted. Still, the good thing about this and other Rough Trade Shops compilations is that they seem to deliberately pick obscure tracks you are never likely to hear on your own.

Case in point is the remarkable song "Midas" by Rubicks. Rubicks is a bit of an unknown UK band who only put this song out on their own label on 7" only. Virtually nothing is known of this band but please try to imagine a merging of New Order (circa 1986)/Human League/Bj?rk and then you will have an idea why this song needs to be played over and over agian.

Other gems include: Tracy & The Plastics; The Breeders; Lord Kitchener; Akufen; Electric Six; Prefuse 73 etc.

I will say, though, that this compilation is inferior to the Rough Trade Shops "Post Punk Vol 01" released a year later. This set is missing the fantastic and informative liner notes and the neato packaging of the "Post Punk Vol 01" set. However, a similar criteria was used for the selection of songs that has led me on a quest to collect all the Rough Trade Shops compilations.
