5 out of 5 stars crystal beauty.......2007-07-22

Each time I listen this CD I am taken away by Anna Moffo's clear sweet voice. Her recording for La Boheme in this CD is one of the most beautiful versions ever recorded. Her voice is effortless and pure, with a translucent quality like a crystal lake.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Bellissima.......2003-07-25

Anna Moffo has the most beautiful voive ever heared, anywhere, ever. The arias on this CD showcase her drop-dead-gorgeous tone quality, stellar technique, and versitility. She sings everything one wants to hear, from the classic Puccini war-horses that are sure to get stuck in one's head (especcially since she sings them with perfect fluidity) to bel canto stuff on which she shocks you with coloratura ability (listen to "Una voce poce fa"). Moffo is the most underrated opera star of the golden age; voices and stage-presences like hers are nearly impossible to find today. Skip the spiffy new Renee Flemming disk - buy "La Bellissima" and go slack-jawed.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Moffo's voice is heaven sent!!!!!!.......1998-11-26

This recording is phenomonal! Anna makes the most challenging aria sound effortless. Her voice is nothing short of spectacular!

5 out of 5 stars More than a Curiousity.......2004-12-29

With this new release, Opera Rara continues its yeoman service of revamping the image of discarded Italian composers of the 19th century. Having given loving attention to Mercadante and Pacini, they now turn to Federico Ricci, recording this album of highlights from his 1838 hit, La Prigione d'Edimburgo.
Jeremy Commons relates in his essay in the accompanying booklet that the two sopranos who originally created the co-heroines Giovanna and Ida had voices remarkably similar in timbre and range. Opera Rara cast Elisabetta Scano and Nuccia Focile in the roles, and so have opted for historical accuracy. Scano, though she has a wonderful voice, is the weak link in terms of casting. Her voice is perfectly suited to a comic opera - it is agile, clear, and very pretty, with some ravishing high notes. Indeed, Scano was delightful in Opera Rara's recording of Donizetti's one-act farsa La Romanzesca, and both she and Focile score a hit in the Il Salotto series. However, La Prigione di Edimburgo is a primarily serious, melodramatic work; the two sopranos are rivals in love and over a baby, a situation that ought to be emotionally intense. Scano, as Dorothy Parker once quipped, runs the gamut of emotions from A to B, using virtually no expression and sounding exactly the same whether the libretto says she is having a passionate outburst or it's an ordinary utterance. Focile has all of Scano's strengths, but is better suited to her role as the mad gypsy girl, Giovanna. She is not afraid to express differing moods, and to use her chest voice. She single-handedly maintains the sense of drama in their big 3-part duet. The one number that from this opera that outlived the work itself is Tom's barcarolle "Sulla poppa del mio brich", a delightful buffo number that was still being performed by basses and baritones into the 20th century. Christopher Purves begins this showpiece reservedly, but gradually gains confidence and obtains the level of hamminess needed to make a hit out of the aria. However, the real find in this recording is tenor Nicola Rossi Giordano as Giorgio, whose beautiful voice we hear in the sextet and his big love duet with Focile. Giordano's voice is gorgeous, and a tad more heroic than the coloratura specialists normally required by Opera Rara. I found myself thinking more than once of Bergonzi, but the sound is all his own. Too bad Opera Rara left the tenor's aria out of the recording.
Ricci's music is largely conventional in form and melody, but it is beautiful and highly enjoyable nonetheless - and not without original touches. There are bits of local color, such as Focile's cavatina, which abruptly flip-flops from ordinary larghetto to a tarantella with more exotic harmonies to suggest her gipsy background. The obligatory concerted act-finale is gorgeous, seamlessly weaving together a conventional ensemble and a heartrending solo mad-scene for soprano. The finale, with its peculiar and tense dramatic situation (Giovanna lowers a baby in a cradle by rope from a burning building) is handled by Ricci with grace and admirable subtlety of scoring. Best of all are Giovanna's lovely duets with Ida and Giorgio.
The booklet is a marvel. In a fascinating and highly readable essay, Jeremy Commons familiarizes us with not just Federico, but his brother and frequent collaborator, Luigi and their highly musical family. Commons spins a gripping family epic that would itself not be out of place on an operatic stage. Having corresponded for years with the great-great-great niece of Federico Ricci, Commons relays juicy bits of scandal, moving tragedy, and tales of Federico's moral self-righteousness and selfless love towards his family members. Biographical detail is seamlessly interwoven with analysis of the music of the opera, its genesis, and its reception in subsequent performances. The essay is a brilliant introduction to a composer who would otherwise be little more than a name to most, and presents the Riccis and the artistic world they inhabited in the round. Staring back at us from the pages of the essay are the singers who created the roles in various 19th-century productions, in excellent reproductions of contemporary drawings. A complete list of the casts of all known productions compiled by Tom Kaufman follows Commons' essay, and the libretto of the entire opera is included, with the recorded passages highlighted in blue for easy reference. Vibrant color photos of the recordings sessions are a standard feature of Opera Rara releases, showing a lot of hard work - but also a sense of real enjoyment on the part of all the participants in the project. This is possibly the best booklet Opera Rara has yet produced (and that is saying something). This new recording is a fascinating, tantalising glimpse of a forgotten composer, and whets the appetite for more Ricci works - let's hope Opera Rara tackles Corrado d'Altamura, or Michelangelo e Rolla soon.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING: DISCOVER A RARELY PLAYED GEM.......2006-11-03

I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. I found this CD extremely enjoyable. These are really abridged versions of both operas: Auber's Fra Diavolo (in italian, originaly in French) and Donizetti's La Figlia del Reggimento (in Italina, though orignal also in French).
First of all, even though "La Figlia" was written originaly in French (Le Fille du Regiment), until 2 or 3 decades ago it was mostly known and played in the Italian version. The French version has been appearing more often since the 60s and 70s, a great example of the French opera comique, a form mastered by Donizetti.
Auber's Fra Diavolo was an amazing discovery for me. Auber was one of the most popular composers in 19th Century Paris. His operas are very lively and beautifully melodic He was a master of the opera comique format, and even of french grand opera (his 'La Muette de Portici' is considered the first well-defined example of the grand opera form). Fra Diavolo can be compared with Rossini's comic operas, only that in a french style. The arias and ensembles are richly melodic and quite interesting. The opera made me a fan of Auber, and made me find out more about his work. I was only familiar with "la Muete" (a serious opera). But he might have been better suited for the "opera comique" format. 'Manon Lescaut', 'Le Domino Noir', 'Le Cheval de Bronze' are just a few examples of his comic operas. They are gems that in recent decades have been rediscovered and good recordings of them do exist (available here on Amazon).
I would really recommend any fan of Rossini, Donizetti and other composers of opera buffa to buy this CD. Do get it, give it a chance. It will introduce you to a new and just as fascinating comic opera form. It is fascinating to notice the influence of Rossini and italian opera buffa in general, but then you can also tell that they are also very french at the same time. Just like me i am sure you will end up being a fan of french oprea comique, and maybe even also exploring other of the opera comic composers, such as Adams, Offenbach, Messager, Boieldieu, Gretty and many more.

1 out of 5 stars Four High C's?.......2006-03-07

If you want a very truncated version of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" sung in Italian (original is in French), with the famous tenor aria, which should contain 9 high C's, cut in half (thus only 4 high C's are sung) then by all means get this two CD set.....but why would you? I wouldn't even call this a highlights CD, as so many of the selections are truncated. Despite some nice singing and orchestral playing, this recording is to be avoided. Not the genuine article. Oh yeah, there also is Auber's "Fra Diavolo" on disc one if you care....I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful early opera.......2000-10-09

Il Zazzerino (with works spanning 1577 to 1609) is mostly from the early music era "La Nuove Musiche" or the New Music, by Italian composer and tenor, Jacopo Peri, who wrote the first operas, Dafne (1598) and Euridice (1600). The music is luscious and warm, and Andrew Lawrence-King's harp is a beautiful counterpart to Ellen Hargis, who unfurls a sensitive but powerful expressive voice for each piece. Fans of early opera will be pleased by the recording.

I discovered Il Zazzerino while looking for more work by Lawrence-King, after finding his work on the new recording of the first opera performed in the New World, by Spanish composer Torrejón y Velasco: La Púrpura de la rosa, which I also highly recommend. Another high quality early music opera.

As director Alan Curtis points out in the booklet notes for this recording, Monteverdi wrote too many secular duets to fit on one compact disc, and too few to fill up two. So, the title notwithstanding, the follow-up to Curtis's magnificent first volume of Monteverdi's "complete duets" includes several trios and a number of madrigals for five or more voices (including the masterful setting of Petrarch's "Or che'l ciel e la terra"). The comedy here is gentler and less broad than on the previous disc, but Il Complesso Barocco's theatrical flair, expressive intensity, and feeling for the poetry that Monteverdi set to music are even more apparent this time around. Curtis and his ensemble have nearly outdone the extraordinary Monteverdi madrigal recordings that Rinaldo Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano made during the 1990s. The two ensembles--drawn from the same pool of talented Italian early-music singers--might differ in countless fascinating details of interpretation, but you shouldn't miss either one. --Matthew Westphal
