5 out of 5 stars A Real Winner.......2007-06-02

The title says it all. Every song is a winner and this CD contains the best.

5 out of 5 stars Top quality Salsa in an unforgettable selection.......2007-05-25

As you can see, it would result unuseful any speech about the quality and historical significance of all these top songs and also about the artists (all of them stars around the world). Everyone is a must-have song in any collection of this kind of music. It is a lovely selection recorded with original sound and in a very danceable sequence. Very difficult to say what is better than other but the only song a little bit "out-of-focus" is "Lloraras" because of that it has been recorded live and the sound is not original (but excellently interpreted by Oscar de Leon, as well). Strongly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!.......2007-04-25

This is a release that has got to be heard...a smoker front to back. Every single track included is among the best salsa ever, every single track is on the mark. All of the songs were top hits on their own and are now included here in one cd. The line-up alone is testament to it's dancing power. The songs in this cd have both Puerto Rico's grooving criollo style of salsa and New York's funkier, jazzy style. From New York City: Ruben Blades, Cheo Feliciano, Hector Lavoe; Jose 'El Canario' Alberto; Tito Puente/Tony Vega; Richie Ray; Larry Harlow; Ismael Miranda. From Puerto Rico, Marvin Santiago; Willie Rosario; Frankie Ruiz; Andy Montanez; Orquesta La Solucion; Tommy Olivencia. Lastly, from Venezuela the great, Oscar D'Leon makes an appearance to round out the cast to get "your feet a poppin and da booty hoppin". You owe to yourself to check this one out. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A MUST-HAVE!.......2006-06-22

This is one of the best salsa cd's. It has the best artists and the best songs all in one album, which is hard to find now days. Compared to other salsa cd's I have bought this is the most complete by far.....

5 out of 5 stars Great chill music.......2006-03-27

I first heard this CD at the Museum of Fine Arts shop inside Boston's Logan Airport. It was like a breeze of fresh air as all the restaurants were playing the good ole American pop and rock n roll. The songs have rythms and lyrics from multiple Spanish-speaking countries and no two songs are alike. It's perfect for chilling at home or as background music for a party. I've had many friends asking me about this CD when I had them over for dinner. :) Absolutely fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Surprise package.......2006-03-21

I was in Hot Springs, Arkansas (of all places) when I heard this CD playing in the local crystal/novelty/tat shop on the main street. The only thing I would have ever wanted to buy in that place was the music, and luckily they had spare copies of this CD.

I love it - I've never had any hankering for Latin music, or any other part of Spanish language culture - but this CD just won't let me go. Everyone on this page is right - this is just a great CD!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking CD.......2005-09-27

Putumayo manages to do it again. Don't know how they manage to find some of the most creative young artists from around the world... all I can say is "Keep 'em coming!". This is my 20th Putumayo CD... and I am looking forward to the next 20!!!

4 out of 5 stars New Latino Territory.......2005-07-19

The folks at Putamayo continue to show that they have great skill in finding new music and unbeatable taste. This compilation eschews more raucous and festive party music for new music from the Spanish-speaking world that has been influenced by electronica and art rock. The mood is romatic but cool. Highlights include Raul Paz's "Mulata," which evokes an erotic obsession on the winding streets of a seaside town--a sort of Last Tango in Barcleona. The Spanish band Jarabe de Palo's "Lado Oscuro" is a passion-filled plea from man to woman to love freely with no strings attached. All in all, a great introduction to new artists, some like Paz and Jarabe de Palo who are best known in Europe, and superb ambient background for traveling or a mellow party. Good liner notes introduce the performers. Wish they could include complete lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Hey this is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-24

Okay I adore this cd...I put it on in my car and it takes me back to my Summers in Spain, as a child, growing up in London!! But with a wild twist..fanatastic music that will transport you and revive you but at the same time is calming..if that makes sense. Each track is a delight and I am just now buying more to give as gifts..yes it is that good!!!

Tarkan has enjoyed a Ricky Martin-style popularity in Turkey since the release of his second album, Aacayipsin, in 1994--it sold 2 million copies in Turkey and Europe and foreshadowed a string of outrageously successful albums. His 1997 release, Ölürüm Sana ("I Would Die for You"), sold 2 million copies in Turkey alone, 1.5 million being preorders. So it's no surprise that this 28-year-old star with hunky good looks opens his latest CD with the sound of a smoochy kiss on "Simarik" ("Spoilt"), one of Tarkan's most recognizable singles in Turkey. It's a killer tune, too, soaked with the heavy beats needed to keep bodies moving on the dance floor while the landsliding violins of rai build emotional tension. There are several magnetic dance tunes here, mostly collected from his earlier albums, with "Bu Gece" ("Break Free") and "Sikidim" ("Dirty Dancing") among the strongest and most popular. What's intriguing is that Tarkan is not just another pretty face; he was classically trained in Istanbul and penned most of the album's songs. Add the notion of challenging traditional Islamic values with such lyrics as "Don't dance so sexy / Oh, the way you move, you drive me crazy" or "Come on, let's make love / Close your eyes," and you've got the sort of national sensation that parents might hate but the kids will love. --Karen K. Hugg

3 out of 5 stars Tarkan.......2007-07-16

There are three songs that I like out of the whole CD. I don't understand Turkish, so the melody sounds a bit more like Indian. The CD was worth what I paid for: $6 plus $5 S&H.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous man, great voice, appealing music! .......2006-01-10

This is an album that is among a dozen or so "travelling CD's" we use on roadtrips throughout the Minnesota/Lake Superior region. It gradually washed over me and I began to associate it with these fun times and places. Over time, I began to appreciate more its musical merits.

The songs are alternately high energy and more somber/intense. The middle eastern vibe is definitely appealing, and with closer listening I have come to consider them less superficial than this genre usually is, given some very good instrumentation and interesting vocal turns by Tarkan. He really has a wondeful voice once you become accustomed to the overall feel of the music.

The ballads are quite lovely and achieve some depth. Tarkan's voice has a rough edge, but in a good way that really gets under your skin.

Highly recommended, if you want to try something new and different, and will give it a chance. And there is no denying Tarkan's sensastional sexy looks add to the experience. I also recommend his videos!

5 out of 5 stars perfect........2006-01-08

how to describe tarkan's music? one word comes to mind: juicy. (it describes him as well... mmm...) this is just the best pop you can get. sexy, exciting, exhilarating. and smart too, as others have commented - the guy knows how to write music and how to use his pipes. whenever i listen to this album, i get a great big smile on my face and attempt to sing along with every song, even though i don't know a word of turkish.

4 out of 5 stars Dance Music--Turkish Style!.......2006-01-03

I don't speak Turkish, but I think the music on this cd is simply hot. Initially, I bought it for its very Middle Eastern first track, Simarik, but quickly fell in love with the other tracks too. There is a great variety to the music on here, from traditional Middle Eastern pop to Western-style dance tracks. But Tarkan's lyrical delivery is outstanding regardless of the musical style, ranging from playful to urgent and passionate to sheer sensual.

Well worth every penny you spend on the purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Turkish George Michael! ( in a good way).......2005-09-21

I got this album for 'Simarik', and find I love the rest of the album Almost as well. It's a great party/driving cd, and was a real eye-opener for me in terms of popular turkish music. Very rock, and nice to include the lyrics as well.

4 out of 5 stars A modern, but interesting take on Brazilian classics.......2007-03-22

This album is completely different from the "chamber jazz" treatment that the Morelenbaums and Ryuichi Sakamoto gave Tom Jobim's work on Casa. I thought Paula's voice was almost angelically lovely on that album, and so took a chance on this one.

All the songs were were written or co-written by Vinicius de Moraes. The comparison to Bebel Gilberto's first big album is natural, but not wholly accurate. Paula's clean pure voice and natural inflections are still here, and you'll find the nylon stringed guitars that almost define the classic bossa nova sound. Add to this loops, beats, synths, and you have samba, bossa nova, with a healthy dash of William Orbit and late-period Everything But The Girl.

Almost everything here is above average. There aren't any real klunkers, though honestly I could do without some of the spoken word intrusions that sound like samples of the ghost of Tom Jobim reciting something I naturally cannot understand as a non-Portugese speaker. Insensatez is weirded up a little more than I would have done it, but I can't say it isn't fresh and original. And on its own terms, it works, even though it isn't my favorite way to hear this classic song.

I guess to sum up, I would say this album was a pleasant surprise, with the emphasis on pleasant. It is tuneful, mostly upbeat, innovative, it doesn't really drag anywhere, and you can tap your toe to it. Highly recommended, unless you're a purist.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding.......2006-11-21

I took a chance on purchasing this CD since I have started getting more into Brazilian and lounge music. Usually CD's will have three songs at most that are good and the rest of the CD is mediocre to bad. Every song on this CD is great. Because this CD was so good, I took a chance on buying "Casa" and "A Day in New York," both featuring Paula Morelenbaum on vocals. I am thoroughly satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Really Wonderful Album.......2006-02-10

"Berimbaum" was one of my favorite albums of the previous year. This album was much different from Morelenbaum's previous outings like "A Day in New York" album which focused more on classical interpretations of favorite Brazilian standards. On her solo album, she dubbed soft, subtle electronica elements to update some fo the classics. Yes, her album is not as "cutting edge" as some of arrangments that some downtempo artists like the late Suba or Nicola Conte were able to perform on Bebel Gilberto or Rosalia De Souza's album, but the songs were still wonderful.

What makes this album wonderful for me were Morelenbaum's performances. She has a delightful voice and she does a beautiful job on this album. She's good at communicating joy and sorrow in her performances.

The only problem I had with this album was her "Canto De Ossanha." I feel that Morelenbaum's interpretation of this classic wasn't well done. I've heard better updated performances on Daude's album and on Rosalia De Souza's "Garota Moderna" album.

I highly recommend this album. If you're looking for a downtempo version of the classics, however, then this is probably not the album for you. You're better off getting Bebel Gilberto's first album, Suba's "Sao Paolo Confessions," or Rosalia De Souza's "Garota Moderna."

5 out of 5 stars Authentic but Fresh!.......2006-01-16

If you don't like the familiar and rich rythmic bossa of the past with a little twist of electronica - then you will really be missing some of the best music out there! After getting "CASA" and then "A Day In New York" I took the next step and bought some Paula on her own. With "Berimbaum" ofcourse I expected the hear Jaques' incredible cello - come on people it is part of what makes the two of them, even without Ryuichi Sakamoto's keyboard, delicious. If you want defiled bossa with a techno edge and clubby 2006 twist look elsewhere. This is good solid music worth telling likeminded friends about. Yes, it's a little different but still so authentic and fresh. Paula's voice is perfect for each song, and right from the top with "Tomara" get ready for a treat. "Primavera" is quite beautiful. Tom Jobim would be proud of not just the Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto collaborations but this CD as well!

4 out of 5 stars Paula takes on the Bebel thing.......2005-08-04

Paula Morelenbaum is known for absolutely authentic, traditional takes on bossa classis, particularly Tom Jobim, with whom she and her husband Jaques, performed.

But here she is taking on the eletro/ bossacucanova/bebel/eletronica thing with rather strong results. My favorite track by far is the little samba well-known from the Black Orpheus soundtrack, Jobim's O Nosso Amor, which is rarely redone compared to other gems from that film. Here its just giddy with guitar by Luiz Brasil, shortened lyrics, and an almost childlike simplicity from the singer.

The other tracks are also a pleasure -- not only because they draw on wonderful, classic compostions but because every arrangement is unique and not much of her husband's cello has been shoehorned into the project (normally his playing is great, but here it's really out of place.)

A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Algo deferente(something different).......2007-04-23

The music is awesome on this disc and I was caught by surprise how the Cuban music has penetrated Africna culture so long ago. According to the booklet this has been going on since the 40's and 50's when Cuban records were first brought to Africa. The unique touches to Cuban son are magnificent. The addition of Cameroonian horns on the Portuguese- African band Tam-Tam 2000 is a perfect example of the merging of cultural elements for a unique brand of Cuban son. There is plenty of traditional Cuban son too to get your fill of the dance music that is hotter than a habanero but cooler than the shade of palm tree on a hot day at the beach. However, the real showcase of music on this disc is the unique hybrid created in Africa by musicians from Angola, Congo and other locations. Cuban music is alive and well all over the world . I find it particularly interesting that the music has gone full circle since the Cuban son has it's roots in African rhythms. This is a delightful disc that is perfect music to liven things up . Recommended for your next get together where you will have to clear out the furniture because people will be dancing. If you love Cuban music than this is for you. If you want to hear something different in the way of Cuban music than you will love this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome!!!!!!.......2007-04-09

I cannot stop listening to this CD. I have repeated some of the songs so many times that my kids have threatened to leave the house and come back when my addiction is over. As I am listening to the music, I am dancing at the same time. This CD puts me in an exuberant and joyful mood. I have recommended it to all my friends.

5 out of 5 stars I Don't Know How They Do It.......2006-06-10

This CD is a masterpiece! It is absolutely amazing, and it has a lot of depth in it. A great piece to dance to or just to listen to if you would like to relax. You can hear the cuban beats as well as the african beats in here. just amazing..

5 out of 5 stars West Africa and Cuba join forces.......2005-11-28

This CD should have been named Afro-Cubano. The CD starts off with African salsa and son, and then switches back and forth between Cuban son and African son.
Then just when you think you figured the CD out Ruy Mingas's Kolonial throws you off with a very percussive afroportuguese dish. The rhythm here is strong and different from the clave influence heard in the rest of the CD.
One strange thing about this CD is that the Cuban selections are all traditional son, while the african cuts stand out as more progressive and elaborate, with incredible use of electric guitars.

5 out of 5 stars Afro-Latino roots at it's best.......2005-07-22

Well folks this is where it started, the true roots of the Cuban Rhythms and the rest of the Caribbean sounds. Here you will see the close connection to what today it's known as "salsa"; on some songs you think you are listening to Spanish but in reality it's Portuguese Creole from Cape Verde. The rest of the songs are a mixture of African, Spanish, Peruvian, Cuban and Portuguese rhythms. My favorite songs are from Angola, Rudy Mingas " KOLONAL " and Ricardo Lemo & Makina Loca from the Congo "Mambo Yo Yo ", all the rest are good too. On this CD the African continent proves to the rest of the world that salsa originated from them and they can play it just as good!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not enough old Bajofondo.......2006-12-28

If you liked the original "Bajofondo Tango " than you might be dissapointed but then again you might like this club version. Personally, it is not my cup of tea really and has few saving graces. The songs are remixed so they are quite different, they are more upbeat, danceable grooves as opposed to the originals. You can hardly recall some to the originals. There are two versions of "Perfume"; the Surdo Jazz Mixx is all about the dance-groove-thang, whereas the Bouquet Remix holds more true to the the compositions format on the first disc. Personally I like the songs when I can still relate it to the original. There is a European edge to many of the tracks(possibly the ones recorded in Paris?) that makes the disc a little disjointed because many of the others are more downtempo. Since it was recorded in five different major International cities it tends to sound like something slapped together. "Pulso" is one of three songs remixed twice and sound nothing alike. The version by Alexkid is more downtempo-trippy-reggae infused than the Omar version which is more midtempo dance groove. One of the more interesting remixes is "Miles de Pasajeros" where the Androoval Remix lays a light Spanish hip-hop track through the track for a different effect. This disc is more of a disco type shake-your-booty CD than anything else so it is quite a departure from the original or what you think of as a remix. This is probably not for everyone since many of the tracks are super fast thump-thump tunes. It is at best a change of pace disc that has only a few songs worth repeating. You would be better off sticking with the original. More of the original music needed to be used to establish the original identity; this formula is mostly new material so if you don't recall the old stuff you are stuck in no-mans-land. If Gustavo Santaolalla had been involved in this production the result would have been a different story, too bad.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I bargained for. Songs don't sound right........2006-06-10

I bought this album and was totally dissatisfied.
The songs sound like Eastern-bloc military disco versions of the sound samples on Amazon.com. They aren't the same.

Radio Latino is devoted to modern, tightly-produced tracks by Latin artists who understand the impact of a hook. Based upon past hits by Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, Gloria Estafan, Marc Anthony, and even Madonna, almost any one of these selections could prevail quite nicely on the American pop charts, if not for the fact that the performers have not yet achieved the requisite marketing profile. But Madrid-born, Miami-based Javier Garcia's playfully salacious "Me Gustaria" ("I Would Like"), with its studiedly silly frill of hip-hop, would get feet moving anywhere, as would the louche, droll "Vagabundo"("Vagabond"), originally recorded in the fifties by Trio Los Panchos and now revived by Uruguay's Martin Buscaglia. Costo Rico, from Barcelona, achieve a frisky mix on "Por Esos Mares" ("By These Seas"), described in the liner notes as a meeting between flamenco-plus-reggae but sounding more like party time in Rio. Meanwhile, Orishas (named for the sacred pantheon of the Christian and African-based Cuban Santeria religion) wield rap, beats and samples on "Reina de la Salle" ("Queen of the Street"), an anti-prostitution diatribe. --Christina Roden

Album Description

On Radio Latino, Putumayo returns to its Latin roots with this collection of contemporary musicians standing at the forefront of the thriving Rock en Espanol/Latin Alternative movement. Most of these musicians are household names within their home countries, but have yet to realize their full potential in the rest of the world.

In 2003, Time magazine called Orishas one of the 10 most important groups outside the US, alongside U2 and Radiohead. Their song Reina de la Calle fuses traditional acoustic Cuban instruments playing son and guajira rhythms as a foundation with layered hip-hop samples, R&B vocals and rap verses to create a sound that is truly unique.

An accomplished singer-songwriter and one of Spain's brightest new stars, Bebe emerged from relative obscurity in 2005 after five Latin Grammy nominations made her the year's most nominated artist. On the track Men Senara the simple acoustic vibe of the opening phrases slowly grows into a sonic groove with pulsing beats and electronic effects that add a new dimension to Bebe's waif-like vocals.

Closing the album is 2002 Latin Grammy winner Jorge Moreno. On Candelita Moreno is inspired by the traditional instrumentation and rhythms of his parents' homeland, Cuba. Including brass band accents, flute, and a cacophony of percussive sounds, Moreno ties in contemporary flavors of American pop, funk and electronica.

While acknowledging their heritage by intertwining traditional rhythms and instrumentation with elements of popular music, Latin musicians are demonstrating that you don't have to sacrifice your cultural roots to appeal to a mainstream audience.

Putumayo will contribute $1 from the sale of each Radio Latino CD to United for Colombia in an effort to help rehabilitate child victims of landmines in the Putumayo River valley and throughout Colombia.

    5 out of 5 stars Zucchero rocks!.......2006-06-05

This was the first Zucchero cd that I ever purchased, and I was immediately hooked. I love his voice; he invests a lot of emotion in his singing. Plus there are lots of great songs - some rocking blues and some fine slow songs. Terrific duets with a female singer in some of the songs(Music in Me, Hasta El Fondo) as well as the instant classic duet with John Lee Hooker on Ali D'oro. My favorite songs are : Music in Me, Rossa Mela Della Sera, Hasta El Fondo, Ali D'oro, Baila Morena, Aromas Perdidos and Shake. As you can see, I enjoy most of the cd.

If you also enjoy this cd, I highly recommend my other two favorite Zucchero cds : Blue Sugar and Spirito Divino. Make sure to buy the Italian language version of these cds. I never like it as well when he sings in English, and he usually puts out an English language version of his cds. This particular version of Shake does have a few of the songs in Spanish, but he sings well in Spanish too.

I'm looking forward to his next cd which should be coming out later this year!

5 out of 5 stars Wings of Gold.......2006-03-21

Song number four, Ali d'oro (wings of gold) is a heart-stopper. Wow. John Lee Hooker and Zucchero (singing like Clapton on a really good day): "I lay down with an angel, lay down thinking, more than I could, really say" Damn, this is what music is about.

    5 out of 5 stars Must have..........2005-06-12

My sister turned me on to Zucchero. Yet another thing I will never be able to repay. This album is great. If you have never heard Zu's music, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Zucchero Shake CD.......2004-05-16

I was in a familiar coffee shop in Munich when I first heard this CD. The disc so intrigued me that I asked the owner and she kindly showed me the disc. I immediately went to the WOM (world of music) shop down the street and purchased the disc. The closest word I can imagine is enchanting. The music and words pull you in and you can't help but enjoy this album.

The title of this CD is mildly misleading as this collection is not strictly homegrown Latin in its focus. There are also tracks by Manzanita, a Spanish Roma (Gypsy) player famous for his rumba flamenca (this is what the Gipsy Kings play); Kaoma (a group famous--or infamous--for its high-profile participation in the lambada craze); and Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese star with an Afro-Cuban style redolent of Kinshasa during the 1960s. That being said, it is unlikely that these 10 tracks will disappoint anyone. It's prime stuff, ranging from Colombia's Toto La Momposina to Oscar de Leon from Venezuela, to the Bay Area's own Conjunto Céspedes. Latin music is a complicated subject and many would-be listeners are too intimidated to try it. This album was compiled by a fan, rather than a pundit, with a naive enthusiasm that's certain to help beginners feel relaxed enough for further explorations. --Christina Roden

I actually heard this CD at a Training seminar before I actually bought it. The music is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Latino all the way!.......2005-08-19

A great compilation of music from the roots of Africa, Cuba and Latin America interpreting the Cuban son better known today as "Salsa", other musicians from Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela are here too with their traditional rhythms that have been incorporated in the Afro-Cuban sounds. My favorite is a duo "Besame Mama" with Poncho Sanchez (a Chicano from California) and my favorite the king conga player, (Cuban born) Mongo Santamaria. This CD is very good for all Latinos in general.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT LATINO BY PUTUMAYO.......2005-07-13

Anything buy Putumayo is great. This is nothing different--great latino vibes for any party, morning errand or dinner mix.

    5 out of 5 stars A great cd.......2001-11-26

This is an album that is sure to lift your spirits. Full of great Latin dance beats, from artists from Cuba, Spain, South America and even Zaire. A great selection and variety, from Salsa and Rumba to Son. The booklet is also very informative, with a piece about each artist and the song. Highly recommended.
