What the....?.......2006-07-16
What happened? This used to be such a great series! Now, it's like they're just slapping it together without a second thought. Too bad they're getting lazy. There's some truly amazing chill floating around and it would be nice if they'd pay attention. My major peeve is that they've started repeating some songs, most notably the one by Sarah McLachlan. Why do they always have to include one of her remixes anyway? If they're going to do the "repeat thing" why not Starsailor, BT or Thievery Corporation? Anyhow, I'll forgive and forget(this time!) and hope that future compilations will be up to snuff.
Review from the Synthesis.......2005-06-16
For this CD, the name says it all. Chillout 06 is a compilation 14 down tempo, melodious original tracks and remixes by bands from various genres of music. To maintain this mellow vibe, the transitions between each track are smooth, keeping the listener immersed in each tasteful groove throughout the CD. Even though the tracks are solid from beginning to end, the Solarstone Afterhours mix of Sarah Mclachlan's "World On Fire," "Life's What You Make It" by Talk Talk, and The Postal Service's cover of the Phil Collins classic "Against All Odds," are stellar tracks that separate themselves from the rest. If you're looking for a collection of relaxing tunes, or a CD to make sweet, sweet love too, Chillout 06 fits the bill perfectly.

what is 'chillout' music ?.......2005-05-07
i didn't quite understand the differences between lounge and chillout when i bought this. after i bought it and had a listen, i realized it's not really my taste. but my rating this album is based on the flow of music on it. i did not quite understand how holden & thompson wound up on the list of songs, since they usually appear in more dance/trance geared releases. you have music that goes from slow (ex. the postal service) to fast (within the context of this cd), and various rhythms that shift from light to dark, i just could not relate it to what i think 'chillout' music is supposed to be. i guess my definition would be more like relaxed pop.
although i do like lounge music (which is a spinoff of the trance genere), such as 'a trip in lounge' and other downtempo releases, such as disc 3 of blank & jones' The Mix vol. 2, etc. but i think overall, this would be a good 'variety' album to have in case you want to unwind from mainstream artist albums/compilations.
if i were to pick an album to chill to, it would most likely be of lounge genere.
chillout 06 / the ultimate chillout .......2005-03-12
As good as all the others from this collection.
The only thing I didn't like was the sarah mclachlan song world on fire ,they included this same song ( different remix ) on chillout 05 they shoud not have included it again .
But other than that I loved most of the songs : delirium you and I , ulrich schnauss on my own , talk talk life's what you make it , ian brown time is my everything , san ilya bellissimo , bent silent life .
And I thought The Postal Service cover of against all odds was brilliant.
Just Great !!!!!!!!! A MUST .
ultimate garbage 06.......2005-03-11
I just finished listening to this album for the third time and it still just won't sit right with me. I tried hard to find what the producers were trying to get at with this compilation.
Too many up-beat songs! This is supposed to be a chillout album but it's mostly just junk laying around on the studio floor that an escaped drunken chimpanzee put in order.
Track 11 was the best one for me and the first one is awesome, but that's a given with Delirium. Piss poor all around. I owne 02-06 and this one was slapped together and not well thought out.
Shame on the producers!!!! What were they thinking?!!
Skip this one if your looking to get the complete set. Learn from others mistakes. That's the point of the review system right?

Chillout 05 is a great introduction to the chill music....If you like this kind of music then check out this artist... [...]
Just "okay.".......2005-01-10
I did not connect with Chillout 05 nearly as much as I did 02 and 03 (incidentally, I did not connect with 04 as much either). It was okay, but not as spectacular as I was hoping. I looked forward to it all year, and bought it the second it came out, but I have to say that I was a little disappointed in many of the tracks.
Excellent CD in an Excellent series.......2004-09-20
This '05 addition is excellent! I recommend the entire series, expept for the original 2001 (the 2001 isn't that good). 2002, 2003, '04, and '05 are outstanding. If they can keep this up, I'll look forward to purchasing another CD ASAP!
One of the better compilations in the series.......2004-08-20
To say that I am a big fan of downtempo music would be a gross understatement. When I am not listening to goth or industrial music, I like to relax to some downtempo music or chill out music as a lot of people refer to it as. Obviously nothing can compete with the Buddha Bar and Cafe Del Mar series. Despite being utterly predictable, one of my favorite series is the Chillout: the Ultimate Chillout series by the folks at Nettwerk Records, home to Sarah McLachlan. The first volume really didn't impress me but gradually with every volume, the series got better. Still they remained pretty predictable by including tracks by the most obvious artists like Delerium, Radiohead, and Sarah McLachlan. I just acquired the fifth volume today. As predictable as this cd is, it still has some really killer tracks like the Starsailor remix "Four to the Floor". I didn't expect to hear something as bouncy and upbeat like that, let alone like it since I'm not a big fan of Starsailor. I dug the Marius de Vries mix of Sarah McLachlan's "World On Fire". The song fit the mood of the cd. "No Surprises" by Radiohead is an old track by the band but it is one of my personal favorite Radiohead songs ever. Great inclusion. "Just Be" is one my newest favorite songs this year and the Carmen Rizzo's chillout mix did not disappoint me or ruined the song. Although Nettwerk Records could learn to take risks and choose less predictable songs for this series, volume five is definitely one of their better compilations.
A Great Electronica CD.......2004-08-05
Chillout 04 was terrific, though there were a couple of songs I routinely skipped over. This new 05 installment is even better, and I enjoy every track. Just as the title suggests, these songs are relaxing but never a downer. It's a great mix of electronica that doesn't repeat the same beat until you could scream. And it's a nice mix of familiar artists (like Delerium and Flaming Lips) alongside some you may not have heard of. A very good buy.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music.......2004-06-07
This album was my introduction to the whole Chill music phenomenon. Since then, I have listened to quite a few Chill albums, ranging from jazz to world beat to the sounds found here, downtempo electronica. I have become quite enthusiastic about Chill...not a style of music so much as a mood that can be exemplified in a number of genres of music. The mood is relaxing, but with a gentle beat. Unlike New Age or ambient smooth relaxing music, most Chill is something you could dance to late at night when you're mellowed out, or early in the evening when you're just kind of warming up; or, you can just sit back in your recliner and drift off to music pleasureland.
Some albums pull off the Chill mood better than others. This is one of my favorites. I especially like tracks #5 through #9...this set of 5 songs is 5-star material and exquisite sequencing--sheer perfection in beautiful electronic sounds and a gentle beat that rocks you like a sensual lullaby.
While #5-#9 are the pinnacle of the album for me, tracks #4-#10 all fit together superbly. I don't like Moby's "In This World"--it just doesn't seem to fit on this album, so that's why I say the good sequence starts at #4. The first song seems to be a bit different too. While most of the album is more like evening music, Delerium's "Love" seems like sunny music to me. It's still smooth and beautiful, but the acoustic guitars and female vocals sound more like summer sun music to me, rather than the other songs' "evening" sounds.
I have three versions of "Tears From The Moon" by Conjure One. While this is my least favorite in itself, the mix on this album fits the album to a tee. After this song, the beautiful, smooth, rich electronics give way to a song with lowkey rapping, so the mood is lost. The lyrics in "North Pole" are offensive and thus do not contribute to the beauty found on the rest of the album. Fischerspooner's and New Order's songs sound like something straight out of 1982 (Depeche Mode or Yazoo of that era, for example); I like that kind of music and these songs have a gentle slow beat, but still, the 1982 sound doesn't mix well with the 2003 sounds. These are the reasons I say songs #4 to #10 are the prime sequence of this album and the other songs, well, just don't fit so well.
I picked up this album because of the artists I knew, Moby and New Order. Ironically, I dislike the song by Moby and think the New Order song doesn't fit. But I have been introduced to a new mode of music, Chill, which I am now quite crazy about, and among Chill albums I've heard, the middle of this album, particularly tracks 5 through 9, is quintessential Chill. So beautiful...
Not quite the ultimate chill out but still good.......2003-04-13
I guess after hearing the fifth volume in the Buddha Bar series, my expectations of chill out compilations have been raised. I have been spoiled by the diversity of the well-knowned chill out series. So when I bought Nettwerk's "Chillout 2003: The Ultimate Chillout", I thought it could have been better and less predictable. As much as I love Moby and his song "In This World" and Sasha's "Wavy Gravy", I thought those two songs could have easily been left off this cd. On the other hand hearing a new song from "Delerium ("Love") and a remix of my favorite Conjure One song "Tears From the Moon" made it well worth buying the cd, which I found a used copy in the used bins at my favorite record store. The Delerium song "Love" was nothing I have ever heard before from my favorite ambient act. Faithless' Zoe Johnston lends her stunning vocals to the beautiful song. I also loved Kirsty Hawkshaw's "Fine Day [Frakker Mix]". I remember hearing samples of that song on an old Orbital song. Of course what is a Nettwerk compilation without a Sarah McLachlan track? To be honest, I actually enjoyed the William Orbit mix of "Black". I am nowhere tired of that song as I am with Delerium's "Silence". I wasn't too wild about the Telepopmusik or Fischerspooner tracks. Both groups I find vastly overrated. I loved Ihb's "Olivia Newton Christ" and FC Kahuna's "North Pole Transmission". Hooligan's "Hear Me Now" and New Order's "Your Silent Face". With all its imperfections, "Chillout 2003" is quite good but it isn't the ultimate chill out as the title say. I leave that title to my favorite chill out compilation "Buddha Bar V".
Best Chillout CD of 2003.......2003-04-02
As the title states - this is the Ultimate Chillout CD. I love the way it starts out with Delerium - they are one of the best Chillout groups ever. Can't wait for a new CD by them. Chillout 2003 also does a nice job of mixing it up. The Conjure One track is perfect and even the older stuff like New Order fit in well.

Best of the chillouts.......2006-09-12
Don't waste your money on other chillouts. This is THE ONE to get: Hayling, Destiny, Edge of the Ocean, Teardrop, Street Spirit, Swollen, and others that you may or may not like... All things considered, there is no better chillout album than this.
4.5 stars. Solid Chill Compilation, Much Better than 2001.......2004-09-20
4.5 Stars... This CD is very good, and much better than the below average 2001! I recommend the entire series, expept for the original 2001 (the 2001 isn't that good). 2002, 2003, '04, and '05 are outstanding. I own all the discs from 2001 thru 05. If they can keep this up, I'll look forward to purchasing another CD ASAP!
Awesome........2003-11-19
This CD is awesome. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I still listen to it all the time.
Ace for the casual electronic fan, or chillout beginners.......2002-11-05
Right, no surprises here, just a big ol' chunk of big names and some exclusive remixes by the chillout regulars currently cashing in. All calculated for maximum appeal, of course. Brit bird Dido has her brother offer up some strings and trip-hop with "Here With Me," and it's actually quite lovely, grandiose even - matched by Coldplay's "Trouble." FC Kahuna look beyond their electro-disco tastes for "Hayling," a beeping electronic waterfall backed by that GusGus gal Sia Furler. And whatta you know, Zero 7, Bent, and Delirium all show up again.
Now, too bad about whiny Radiohead, buy your moody pals probably like that stuff, and the Dusted mix of McLachlan's "Angel" just adds unnecessary beats. So how good is Chillout 2002? Pretty ace as a gift or for the casual electronic music fan, but dance aficionados should be aware the new remixes alone (barring "Intensify") don't warrant a cash layout if you have most the other tunes.
Sexy !!!.......2002-08-24
This is the sultriest compilation I had ever owned, this is not to chill, exactly, this is to spend a special night with your loved one,I like the fact that most of the songs have a beggining and an ending and aren't seamed one to another, that makes it easier if you like to make your own compilations, also I like the alternative versions of many very common "chill" songs like "Teardrop".
The only reason I gave it only four stars is because I'm kinda tired of compilations that have "Here with me","Destiny" and "Swollen",don't get me wrong,I thing they are beautiful songs, but with all the music out there, one would think that they would stop including these songs in every compilation!!!.
All in all,a very enjoyable CD.

Weakest In This Series, Highly Recommend 2002, 2003, 04, 05.......2004-09-20
Below average, the weakest in this series. I recommend the entire series, expept for this original 2001. This 2001 isn't that good. Purchase it if you like, but be warned, it really is significantly weak in comparison to the later CDs in this series.

Not one of the better chillout compilations.......2002-03-02
"Chillout 2001" is definitely one of the weakest chillout compilations I have heard so far. As commercialized as "Ultra Chilled" is the tracks Ultra Records chose are just excellent. The entire atmosphere of that 2 cd set is perfect to chill out to. This album however is a complete mess. What chillout compilation doesn't have a Delerium song on it? This is an overly commercial and predictable compilation that was obviously not executed as well as "Ultra Chilled" or "The Classic Chillout Album". I like the Supreme Beings of Leisure, Dusted, Groove Armada and Delerium tracks but the rest just didn't do anything for me. I love chillout compilations but "Chillout 2001: The Ultimate Chillout" does not live up to the name. It is not the ultimate chillout. I wish more thought was put into this album. Plus chillout music isn't strictly electronic music. It includes r&b, folk, pop and classical music. This compilation lacks any variety. I would have given this album one star but I liked a few tracks so I'll give this album some credit...
sexy, smooth chillout swings........2002-01-08
"Chillout 2001: The Ultimate Chillout" is classified as Electronic music, specifically Chillout a.k.a. Ambient, which is a sub-genre of Electronica. Basically, this music is considered too slow for the dance floors and is meant for elevating the mind while keeping you relaxed.
I'm always on the lookout for CDs that break away from the ordinary and have a unique element of surprise to them. Ambient isn't the direction I've usually gone with in the past, I'm actually more of a Trance buff. Ultimately, I haven't made myself too familiar with this style. Let's face it, it's not the most well-known type of music, and CD's that fall under this category don't receive too much exposure. Since the day I got this CD, however, it's taken a hold of me and hasn't let go!! This is truly worth getting for the open-minded and for those looking for something new.
What surprises me the most about "Chillout 2001: The Ultimate Chillout" is the amount of diversity and flavors you get with these ten different artists. Their talent and creativity is enough to get them keen recognition. It's certainly gotten mine.
Possibly the most astounding and impressive track on the CD is "Ain't Got Nothin'" by the Supreme Beings of Leisure. This track could also be classified under the Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) genre with its complex beats and groovy rhythms, underscored by a lush female vocalist. My personal favorite song on this album is "At The River" by Groove Armada, a shocking departure from their more LOUD hits like "I See You Baby." This is one of the most brilliant songs I've ever heard. The drum beat gives a slow, simplistic entry, eventually becoming the background for a tune taken off an old record. This is actually a redo on "Old Cape Cod" written by Claire Rothrock, Milton Yakus, and Allan Jeffery. Groove Armada took samples from the melody and re-recorded the vocals with new singers. The first song by Fatboy Slim, "The Weekend Starts Here," which provides for the intro to "Chillout 2001: The Ultimate Chillout," is just as startling as Groove Armada's track because it also doesn't sound like most of Fatboy's other releases.
The CD as a whole flows very smoothly from start to finish. Not a single track sticks out or slows the progress of the album. I only hope there'll be more releases under the Ultimate Chillout series.
>>> 5 stars. Enchanting and full of absolute bliss.
- the enlightened one
Some good stuff, but unsure about its mood.......2001-06-04
I like music to chill-out to, and this CD has tracks that do that for me at the right volume. The problem is that I already own some of the tracks that do that for me from other CDs because they compiled stuff here that was simply too above-ground. Fatboy Slim? Groove Armada? Supreme Beings? Come on...some of this stuff gets used so much on TV or in clubs that it sounds derivative, despite the fact that there's good songs on it. I'd have liked a better mix of the popular items with stuff - or at least remixes of stuff - that were'nt as accessible.
There's some jewels on here: #3 Supreme Beings of Leisure "Ain't Got Nothin'" #8 Autour De Lucie "Chanson De'LArbre"
...but the better part of this mild 10-tracker is retread or just not strong enough. I will say this for it: it DJs itself. Put this on at your average party and people will think you've got the motts because you have the "good" stuff they hear at clubs and on TV. me? I'm a bit more discerning in my home listening, so I was looking for more bite.
Is it better than... "Coffee Shop: The Chillin Sessions 3" - yes "DIY Diversions" - yes, but barely Hedkandi "Serve Chilled v.1" - yes Mujaji "Free Rain" - no "Serve Chilled: A Collection..." - no "Chilout Voices v.1" - no
Fatboy Rules.......2001-03-28

Customer Reviews:
Great Chillout CD Package.......2006-06-01
This set of 6 CD's (as expected) starts out slow and gradually builds to a crescendo, eventually coming back down to earth. If you're looking to "chillout" after a long day, this set will certainly fit the bill. Nice mix of tunes, very little in the way of vocals, which is how it should be to relax the mind and comfort the soul.
quality over quantity!.......2005-09-05
I'm normally totally into chillout mixes and with 6 CD's I was sure I would find somethin to my liking... 6 CD's later I had yet to find it. The problem being that all the songs are all so similar!!!! This album was a BIG 6 CD disappointment, not recomended.
Strike 6. You're Out!.......2004-09-17
How ironic that probably the quickest review I'll have done in months is on a release with 6 cd's! This is a colossal compilation of 6 'chillout' cds by the Decadance label.
The good? 6 discs! They're bound to get SOMETHING right with all of the room for error, right? And they do have some good tunes and artists. Even Da Lata has an appearance, along with Koop, Bent and a few others. But it's not entirely chillout as it has some popular trance cuts from 2001-2002... and maybe 1998 with Energy 52, iio, etc. The bad? You could put all of the best songs onto one disc and still have room to spare, let alone fill up five more perfectly fine empty discs with rubbish and mind-numbingly dull & uninspired tracks. I don't know what's more amazing; that someone could make a chillout series of 6 discs yet get it so horribly wrong... Or that the cover art is equally original since its the same as a Nu-Bossa compilation, but from a different angle (see "Brazil Remixed").
Can't recommend this. There are far better chill-out comps. If you want cookie cutter, go for the Ultra series. You want flair, go for Wagram (Costes, Des Pres Cafe, London/Paris/Berlin/NY Lounge). You want plain old chill, spend the bucks for Hedkandi's winter chill and serve chilled & check out The Chillout Room/Chill out Album. But this... best left for target practice. "Pull!"
Beware! 95% of songs sound identical, boring, etc..........2004-09-01
I love Chill compilations and have all the Chillout volumes 1-4 as well as Chillout 2001 thru 2005. This 6 CD set was a very big dissapointment, and I'm easy to please. Even if I find one or two songs I love on 6 CD's, it would have been worth it, as I love music. Out of 6 CD's, all the songs sound almost identical and 'do not go anywhere'. A cool intro beat and groove starts.... and then nothing! *ALL* the songs on this disc, except for two songs (which are only OK and I already have) have this decent intro, then just keep playing the into section over and over... you keep waiting for some really interesting continuation of the intro music, but it never happens! I do not recommend this compilation. To put it more clearly, I am always looking for more music to add to my J RIVERS MEDIA Computer software using lossless compression, but NONE of these songs are going to be used. Sorry, but this purchase was a complete waste for me...
Some really nice tracks on this one and a bargin buy.......2004-05-31
There are some nice tracks on this set, it is a bit annoying that each CD has only 10 (when they could have fit 15 or 20) songs on it but if you rip them to MP3 then no problem. What I did is went through the entire set and took my most liked songs out and made a single CD with those songs on it but I also listen to the whole thing every now and again. Some of the good tracks are Private Road, Rapture, and my favorite of the set Gettin' in 2 U. This is a good value. Also recommend the Ministry of Sound chillout CDs as well as Cafe Del Mar series (esp 5, 6 & 7).

- Very good chill compilation
- WELL, I, FOR ONE, LOOOOVED IT!!!

Customer Reviews:
Very good chill compilation.......2004-04-02
I guess it depends on your tastes but I liked this album very much and uploaded more than a dozen of the tracks to my ipod. I have several chill albums and this is one of my favorite and one of the albums I keep on playing over and over. There's plenty of variety here.
WELL, I, FOR ONE, LOOOOVED IT!!!.......2003-03-04
"Ulimate Chillout" is the ULTIMATE...It is funky, seductive, obscure, creative and the songs DO meld well together creating a cornecopia of musical sounds like no other compilation CD. I admit that there are other Chill Out CDs out there that are better than this one, but it is worth adding to you collection if you are a fan of down-tempo and can't find any of the releases found on "Ultimate Chillout". Disc 2 is much smoother to listen to than Disc 1--Disc 1 inundates you with too many Salsa-driven beats...to me, that's not chill-out, but I'm sure someone somewhere thinks so...at any rate--buy it if you just really love the artists on this CD and wonder what not-so-poular artists like Slopho, Mammoth Nuts, Bonobo and T. Spigot sound like. Songs by Yonderboi, Slopho, Rick Strom, Leggo Beast, Athome Project, Boozoo Bajou require repeated listenings!
Reasonably successful chillout collection.......2002-11-05
Water Music records has been flooding the market (ha!) with Chill Out records lately, as have dozens more wishing for a quick buck. So here's what Ultimate Chill Out does right: no usual suspects (Bent, Moby, Alex Gopher) no remixes of tired tunes, and well-written backgrounds of every artist featured here, which should be mandatory of all compilations.
Ultimate Chill Out splits each disc by tempo, the first more upbeat with big name reliables Kruder & Dorfmesiter, Bonobo, Nightmares on Wax and Fila Brazillia all coming through. Other worldly sounds are the true finds here; Gotan Project's Argentina tango meets shuffled break beat on "Triptico," while Madrid De Los Austrias reinvigorate flamenco rhythms on "Dove Estuta."
Disc two can't keep pace, though Tosca, Rick Strom's faint "Maybe I Should," with barely-there beats to drift you off, and Balligomingo's (Garrett Schwartz) startling good "Purify," a fully realized song with rich percussion, deserves extra recognition for this unknown artist. Unfortunately, hip-hop scratching from T Spigot, beginner jazz guitar from The Method, and other unforgettables clogging the set make this a skip-around curiosity, weighing down the value of this overall release.
A poor and disorganic collection.......2002-10-30
There are hundreds of cd's like this. Many of them are actually better. It is a poor, very disorganic, useless collection of songs. The idea that stand behind the realization of this cd is unclear. There's no need to spend money on it.
