Product Description
Who exactly is Envoy? Is he a modern day techno soul singer? Or is he the ‘king of strings’? Perhaps he’s a sexy house legend with a penchant for carnal classics? Maybe Envoy is really a fly in the ointment of pop music, a vocalist who shatters the manufactured pop stranglehold with his soulful, spiritual intonations? The reality though, is that Envoy, real name Hope Grant, is all of these things – and much more.

Coming onto the scene in the early 90’s with releases on respected underground imprints Peacefrog and Plink Plonk as St Vitus Dance and Urban Groove Alliance respectively, Hope joined the Soma family in 1995 and his first demos became his first releases on the label. His debut album Where There’s Life built upon the lush and emotive techno soul that he hinted at on his initial EPs, captivating fans including Carl Cox, who used the dramatic string groove of "Dark Manoeuvres" for his FACT mix CD. But it only hinted at the multitude of possibilities Hope is set to unleash on his second long player.

Shoulder 2 Shoulder is a more diverse work and casts Envoy as an enigmatic, unpredictable character. Compare and contrast styles - string-led Detroit techno to hip-grinding, sexy tech, classic acid house, stirring vocals and live sax combined with hi-tech funk, and emotive musicality.

5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

      5 out of 5 stars 99 Problems/Dirt Off Your Shoulder... Jay-Z Goes Out Great!.......2005-12-14

Jay-Z's first two singles from 2003's "The Black Album", which would be what he claims the final album he will release. We will remember Jay-Z for many reasons, but I think these are one of the best singles he has put out for us since "Hard Knock Life".

Dirt Off Your Shoulder is a great track. With a great beat and good rapping by Jay in this song, this is one of his greatest singles I have ever heard. As for the video, it is your usual rap video with Jay walking through the streets of New York City, getting inside cars and an interlude in the middle. This song is great... until you get to 99 Problems.

As for 99 Problems, this has to be the best song Jay-Z has ever released. Period. I can't explain how great it is, and all I can say is "tight". As for this music video, it is genious. It portrays the ghetto through the eyes of Jay-Z. It is in black and white, just to make it suspenseful. The video is pretty moving, and I think this is worth every penny just for it. Jay-Z gets shot in the end, which puts the icing on the cake.

If you haven't already picked up these singles, get the "Black Album". Even though it isn't Jay-Z's greatest, it has these two songs and another good crop of songs, like "Encore" and "Change Clothes". But, pick this up just for the videos. They are worth the extra few bucks. Got 99 Problems but a ***** ain't one!

      4 out of 5 stars Great single.......2005-02-03

Most of Jigga's new stuff ain't too good but I like this, 99 Problems is better even though Dirt Off Your Shoulder is tight, this is good for jiggaso check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to end a career.......2004-07-14

Jay-Z is definitely going out on top with these 2 singles. "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" is another terrific teamup for Jay and Timbaland (one of the best producers, in my opinion). I like this song much better than the first single for the album, "Change Clothes".

The best song by far is "99 Problems". Producer Rick Rubin, also one of the best producers, gives Jay a great song. The blend of rap and rock and the excellent lyrics make this one of the many highlights of Jay's career. It's too bad they won't get another chance to work together, if Jay-Z really does retire.

It's cool the videos for these songs are included. Both are very good and worth watching.

You can't go wrong with these 2 songs. Jay couldn't have picked 2 better singles to end his career on.

      4 out of 5 stars hardcore rap.......2004-06-19

cool song, cool lyrics. Not as good as "Hard Knock Life" though.

5 out of 5 stars Great finish to a hall of fame career.......2004-06-19

Jay-Z has always been a standout rapper, but as you probably already know, he has decided to hang up the mic. There's no better way to finish a hall of fame career than to release 2 outstanding singles in Dirt off your shoulder and 99 Problems. Dirt off your shoulder is a great song with an unusual beat and a catchy hook, a song that's got everyone across the world dusting off their shoulders. 99 Problems is the better song in my opinion, where Jay-Z goes into deeper issues like racial stereotypes, and it's backed up with an awesome guitar riff in the background. This is a must have for any Jay-Z fan, heck, anyone who likes their rap GOOD should have this CD.
