Is it legal to be THIS good? Jesus. Quite possibly the best album I've ever owned. Their harmonies and arrangements are so interesting, smooth and unreal. Out of this world, don't even bother trying to listen to it first, freakin buy it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock my face off!.......2006-10-07

I got my first dose of The Southland when they were on tour with Tristan Prettyman in Portland and Seattle a little over a year and a half ago and I was hooked. Since then I have seen them perform live five more times and have grown to love them more and more each time. Truth is, you are missing out if you don't already own this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD--great live!.......2006-07-28

While I buy a lot of music and attend a slew of live concerts every year, I've never written a review. I felt compelled to write about The Southland.

I saw The Southland last summer in Indy, with OAR. They were the best band of the night. I bought their CD at the concert and two of the band members signed the insert. They were so approachable. Over the past year I repeatedly found myself putting in their CD and listening over and over, because like so many other reviewers--I NEVER tire of their music! Hard to pick favorites, but their cover of "I Only Have Eyes For You" makes me smile and I love "Miles" and "The Drowning."

Get this CD!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good album.......2006-03-16

Few good songs, Shadow is a solid track, and they do a great cover of "I only have eyes for you". I would recommend the album, worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Band, Awesome CD.......2006-01-12

I first saw The Southland this summer when they opened, along with Pepper, for O.A.R. at a concert in Indy. I sat down right as they began to play, and I wasn't expecting anything too special. Boy, was I wrong. The Southland was great live and really set the mood for later. Everyone was in awe at how great their songs were and how great they were at getting the crowd into their performance. Their songs are so chill, fun, and relaxing, and you can find a hint of California in all of their songs. I bought the cd just recently, and I love it. They're a great band and anyone who likes to relax and listen to great music that puts you in a good mood needs to check out The Southland's Influence of Geography. You'll really enjoy listening to it.

4 out of 5 stars Geographically speaking.......2007-02-17

Not only is this one of Front 242's best works, it is also, in my opinion, one of the better "Industrial" releases of all time. It is also unique among the Front 242 catalog, in that most of the songs are quite short and has a rougher, edgier sound than it's successive releases. It's quite a revelation to listen to GEOGRAPHY now, some 25+ years after it's release, and to re-discover why this had become such an influential album on the development of industrial music throughout the 80's and beyond.

This particular edition of GEOGRAPHY stands high above older releases of this album for it's dynamic sound quality. The new re-mastering breathes fresh life into a mix that once sounded muddled and flat. Obviously extraordinary care was taken in re-mastering this music to truly make it the best it can be.

As an extra treat for 242 fans is the inclusion of the previously unreleased "He Runs Too Fast For Us", originally created shortly after the GEOGRAPHY sessions. Following this track are three more additional songs, which, if I remember correctly, are the same tracks that made up the bonus selections of Sony's 1992 CD edition. Unfortunately, all the bonus tracks are combined into one 15 minute selection, which makes selecting an individual song a chore.

The packaging of this latest re-issue is minimal on both visuals and content. Printed on a digipak format the cover is restored to it's original artwork with a second photo of mannequin heads on the back. There is the track list on the back and a brief paragraph on the re-mastering. Unfolded, the packaging opens to two blank white panels, with a couple lines of text for publishing notes. (Here is where a nice band photo, lyrics, or additional artwork could have been placed). The CD face has a nice design printed on it. Curiously there is a "1" arranged predominately on the disc design, which left me to question if this re-master of GEOGRAPHY is the first in a series of re-releasing the remainder of 242's catalog, which seems to be swiftly falling out of print.

Still, packaging aside, I'd make this version of GEOGRAPHY the one to get. Unfortunately, the high import price tag may keep many 242 fans and newcomers for hearing this classic in it's deserved sound quality.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
Favorite tracks: "Operating Tracks", "U-Men", "Least Inkling", "GVDT"

5 out of 5 stars Incredible! .......2006-12-09

This Classic remastered album is incredibly fresh and bright compared to the original! The liner notes state that it was also "slightly" remixed through modern equipment and several songs have an extra second or two that were cut from the original release. The songs sound brand new and I'm hearing lots of things I never heard before! The extra track is awesome!! And there are 3 hidden tracks; Ethics, Principles and Body to Body that are on the Sony version.
It's a little pricey since it's a European only release but worth every penny!
If you've ever owned Geography, this version is better by leaps and bounds!!

Producer Calls on the Power of Music to Increase Math Scores

In just four years, producer David Printis has taught math, science and geography to over 35,000 children by invoking the power of music. Now, his company continues to educate with new CD's.

Fort Washington, MD - As our country rallies for higher math achievement scores by increasing teachers' pay and rewarding states for encouraging learning, one music producer has risen to the call to action by producing educational music CD's that kids, parents, and even teachers are raving about.Launched in October 2001, the series' first CD, "Multiplication Hip Hop," became an instant hit, and has since become one of the hottest selling independent music CD's on the East coast. Later titles in the series, "It's Elementary," "Science and Geography," and the newest one, "Addition and Subtraction" have met with equal success.

"Kids like the CD's," Printis remarks. "They don't even realize they're learning. They just think they're having fun listening to hip hop."

Not only has Printis won the praise of parents, teachers, and school principals, his company has received the interest of university faculties and national media such as The Washington Post and National Public Radio's "Morning Edition."

"Kids learn the alphabet by learning a song, they learn to count by putting it in a song. This is just another way of bringing it to life for kids," says Martin L. Johnson, professor of mathematics education at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Karen Kunkel, principal at Green Valley Elementary School in a suburb of Washington, D.C., uses "Multiplication Hip Hop" to teach her second graders. She has attributed the CD's with her school's significant improvement on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, a standardized test given to students in Maryland.

"The CD's are a good influence," Printis concludes. "The rhythm keeps the kids interested…and learning."

3 out of 5 stars ok great beat but just repeats..........2007-03-14

The music has a great beat but every song is the same they just say the numbers over and over again. There are no other lyrics. Try Hip Hop Rap much better. It even gives a strategy on how to remember the process for each number....It rocks and raps...!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great Learning Tool.......2005-05-23

My kid loves this CD. It has one of those catchy tunes that you just can't get out of your head. This is probably the worst thing about the CD however my 1st grader has learned a great many things just from listening to the CD over and over. Details about the continents, the position of the sun in different parts of the world at different times, the solar system. What more can you ask? Great product!

      5 out of 5 stars Geography ~ Front 242.......2005-05-16

Geography being Front 242's debute album started an entirely new form of electronic music, i.e., they started ebm, or electronic body music. Previous to this release electronic music did not not have the hard edge that Front 242 showcased with tracks such as U-men, Operating tracks, and many other fine examples. As with any debute album, yes this one also has a problem and that is the sometimes over simplified lyrics, something that improves over time. The new art for the cover is vastly superior to the one with the face and I have no idea what the band was thinking. This is a very important release and it is groundbreaking in the sense that they created a new form of electronic music, i.e., ebm.

      5 out of 5 stars Hey! U-Men.......2005-03-12

For those who want a quick compillation of 242 without the "Single" scene this is a good start,"Backcatalogue" being the other. For the curious wanting to delve deeper-"Official Version" and "Front By Front" are worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Their debut album.......2004-01-18

Somewhat ignored by many music journalists. This album has been dismissed as sounding too like other groups at that time (1981).

Of course it did. The band had just started and were only starting out. Finding their feet, they wanted to do at least what other electronic groups at that time were doing, and on that mission they succeeded.

But their sound at that time really sounded like very little else, so I am unsure as to what some music journalists were really whinging about.

Though there were similarities to Kraftwerk, New Order, etc, the sound the group was putting out didn't really reflect that. They had a sound of their own already. Very sparse (electronic) percussion, keyboard lines and minimal bass formed most songs, which were an exploration in sound rather than a conventional song.

But there is much to admire on this album, for any fan of 80's electronic music, I'd ask you to take a look at this album.

5 out of 5 stars Bom bom bom duh duh dee a.......2002-11-05

This is a great CD but again you'll have to be patient with this CD . It's sounds more like Depeche Mode than what they would later do . But the songs do win you over in time except for GVDT which is immediate . You can't help but groove along to it and it's naive robotic charms . Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Tragicly underrated for you..........2001-11-20

While I know that I am in the minority here, I must say that Geography (with exception of Backcatologue) contains my favorite 242 material. This is a very sharp record. With 242's earliest work, they managed to predict what we all now know as IDM. While Geography may pale a bit when listened back to back with Richard Devine, the sounds 242 use are unmistakably similar to those employed todays most cutting edge electronic artists. The structures are interesting, and many of the beats are dislocated. A very nice ballance between vocal and instrumental tracks is found here. The songs are atmospheric and timeless. The lyrics are brilliantly existential and the sparse vocals mesh perfectly with the inorganic music. I highly recomend this cd to any Autechre fan, or anyone with an intrest in bleakness and sterility.

Musically ambitious -and relentlessly productive- members of related bands such as Vermont, Promise Ring, and Collections of Colonies of Bees have drifted in and out of this loose Milwaukee association.

Pele welds a sturdy and poised rhythm section to springy melodic energies typical of banjo and picked guitar, and the expansive possibilities of a full spectrum of synth and oscillator textures.

This, their first (wordless) album, is consistently bright, and its tracks swell again and again with catchy arpeggiated chords and warm, tuneful harmonic slashes. Supremely likeable, it is well-worth having for those at all interested in this broad genre. The UK release on Rosewood Union adds three remixes, including two from the "People Living With Animals. Animals Kill Peolpe" record. Pele also has several subsequent releases, including the albums "Elephant" and "the Nudes", likewise solid by all accounts. Uh, there you go.

4 out of 5 stars quirky instrumentation and rhythms.......2000-11-15

although emo has been recognized more for the lyrical qualities that it puts forward in many different ways, the typical musical progression that bands like pedro the lion, built to spill, and 764-HERO is also a key element of this sub-genre. pele is a band that fits as an emo band even though they don't use any lyrics. the progression is the same, and you find the same kind of dreaminess that you would with a band like 764-HERO, although they have none of the vicious attacks that the latter sometimes throws in. this cd focuses on the keyboards and is the delightful jumpy sort of cd that you throw in when you aren't really in any sort of mood at all. definitely not pop, but something that you will still like to hum for days on end, even though the rhythms are pretty straighforward throughout the entire album. all in all, a pretty good album and definitely something that can be appreciated if you enjoy bands like the for carnation as well.

Pere Ubu's Rhythym section - a bit closer to saccharine trust than Pere Ubu at times - but this rec is fantastic - I wish they had included the Hideout 12", which has a better version of King John - instead of the Vacation EP .. but the extras are appreciated anyway. Still a handful of odds and ends out there from H&G - I hope they see a release as well ...
