5 out of 5 stars 2nd part of a great Live show.......2006-11-04

I was suprised that Polydor separated this Live concert into 2 LPs.
I was more suprised when they released it on CD and did they same!
Well they got it right anyway. The sound is great, crisp and thundering. Turn this one up!
They put some of the less well known Cream on this one: Deserted Cities of the Heart, Politician and Steppin' out. I suppose that's why Vol. 1 sold more. As a compliment they included the classics: White Room, (a scorching rendition), Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of Your Love. From the first song this one smokes. If you like Clapton and if you like to hear long versions of old songs, this one is for you!

4 out of 5 stars Not on the level of Live Cream but still pretty good.......2006-10-18

Released in 1972, Live Cream Volume 2 was the second posthumous live album released after the supergroup announced their breakup in 1968. Apparently, the band was still missed as like their first live album, Live Cream, it would reach the Top 40 in the U.S. However, the difference between them is evident almost from the get go. While Live Cream showed the band at their magical jamming best, Volume 2 reins in the excitement as the live tracks stay close to the originals. That's not to say that it isn't a strong album as the excellent interplay between Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton is still intact and the performances are still very strong. The opening track, "Deserted Cities of the Heart", is by far the most energetic song here as the band's performance sounds like a train that threatens to run off the tracks. Even though it clocks in at less than 5 minutes, the performance makes you look forward to the passion and experimentation that made the live disc of Wheels of Fire, Live Cream, and even the live songs on Goodbye so special. However, the band plays it straight for the next four tracks, particularly on "White Room" and "Politician." The album does redeem itself a little with Clapton's wah-wah solo on "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and the long closing jam on "Sunshine of Your Love." The closer "Steppin' Out" is not only Clapton's showcase but also the main reason to pick up the album. Easily one of their best live tracks, Clapton lets out a long bluesy solo for the first 4 minutes as Baker and Bruce change things up throughout. However, the best is yet to come. While Bruce takes a seat, Clapton lets out an a capella solo for around a minute before Baker slowly works his way in. As the track continues, Clapton's playing changes moods throughout while Baker's drumming provides the perfect accompaniment before reaching its dynamic end at the 13:38 mark. All told, while this is a fine live release, it's not quite on the level of their other live releases. However, if you can't enough of Cream, this won't disappoint you.

4 out of 5 stars Subtract a star for Steppin' Out.......2006-02-03

Sorry, but it's true. Steppin' is a clever combination of long (nearly fourteen minutes) and boring (It loses steam about three minutes in). But once we get past that one minor gripe, this is actually a good album. They burn through Deserted Cities of the Heart, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Politician and Sunshine of Your Love like it's nobody's business and cut an enjoyable version of White Room (needs the cellos, though). Too bad Steppin' stretches for an eternity-and-a-half, the rest of the album is fine and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could've been, but hey, it's still Cream!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-17

Much like the first Live Cream album, this Volume 2 was released as a "quickie" album to milk Cream's ample fan base of their cash. That statement may sound a bit harsh; however, the music is DAMN good for being part of a rip-off album released without the consent of Eric, Jack and Ginger.

The album starts off very slowly, with the first three tracks coming from what could be construed as Cream's worst recorded concert performance: Oakland 10/4/68. That night was the group's first show in nearly four months and they hadn't had a decent rehearsal since June 1968. Most of the music from that concert is sub-par by Cream standards (especially the still-unreleased "Passing the Time" from that night) but better than many bands at their peak. "Deserted Cities" is out-of-tune and inferior to the WOF studio (it doesn't work as effectively without Bruce's cello lines), "White Room" isn't all that hot either, but "Politician" is definitely an improvement in terms of energy and technical precision, and though the orgy of soloing guitars of the WOF version is missed, this tune works very well live.

The next three tracks were recorded in March 1968 at the same Winterland shows that produced the live disc of WOF. The Winterland performances are Cream at their absolute peak, the polar opposite of the sub-par Oakland show. "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Sunshine of Your Love" are superlative, energetic performances and are among the best versions I have ever heard of these songs. The obvious highlight of the latter tune is the ending jam on the song's final A major chord, though it is rather short compared to other performances of the song (a 17 minute version with a 12 minute (!) ending coda is available on bootlegs).

Which brings me to "Stepping Out," the highlight of the entire album. At 13 minutes, it's definitely not for anyone with little or no patience, but this is certainly a great Eric performance. It's not the best performance of this Clapton solo piece (that would go to Brandeis), but it certainly is respectable and a welcome addition to the live Cream cannon.

Now, of course, there will always be gripes over this album, since it obviously, as stated before, was quickly thrown together with little regard to Cream fans. However, the excellent quality of these recordings must be cherished, since soundboard recordings of Cream in the '60s are a rarity and most fans like me have to listen to poorly-made, hissy audience tapes to hear Cream in their full live glory. Forget the 2005 reunited Cream and take a gander at this. It's well worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2005-08-02

Aside from the last track, "Steppin' Out," this disc really doesn't have much to offer. "Steppin' Out" is the only jam on the CD, and I really think that they could've done a better job putting this compilation together. I rate this CD mediocre at best, because Cream was so great live (or at least they were supposed to be) and I think that they did a terrible job of making an album that was supposed to be representative of their live performances.

For me, the biggest disappointment was "White Room," which is only 5 1/2 minutes long. I really wanted to hear a long jam. But oh well.

If it weren't for "Steppin' Out," I would want my money back.

As for my recommendation, I think that your money would be better spent somewhere else. You'll be paying 10 bucks (at least), and really, only one song is worth it. Buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Cream Live!.......2007-02-27

N.S.U. ,Sleepy Time Time, Rollin and a Tumblin' and Sweet Wine are all from the debut Fresh Cream. This is what those 4 songs sound like on stage. The Cream's strength is live improvisation and this is their best live document hands down.
Also included is the backing track of Strange Brew with different bluesy lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars heavy metal.......2007-02-21

a big fan of clapton i just got around to buying this and was surprised how heavy it was. the first song reminded me of sid barrett floyd, and for the rest I thought of hendricks, sabbath, and song remains the same zepplin. very worth buying for clapton fans to see where he came from.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting live band in rock history .......2005-11-10

While Cream released recorded three fantastic studio albums during their short career that spawned several classic rock staples, most notably the huge hit singles "White Room" and "Sunshine of Your Love", it was their live shows which brought them to another level. Quite simply, there has never been a more exciting live band than Cream was in the late-60's. What made them so exciting? It was a combination of things. First of all, bassist Jack Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker were among the best rock musicians to emerge during the late '60s. The second reason was the massive egos, particularly those of Bruce and Baker, which came with the territory of being masters of their craft. But the most important reason why Cream was so exciting was their live performances. They were the first as well as one of the very few bands that can take a 3-minute pop song and stretch it into a long jam without a wasted note. While some may call this indulgence, the beauty of Cream was the incredible interplay between the members. Live Cream, released in 1971, long after the band had broken up, shows the band at the height of their powers. While bands such as the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead would become legends in their own right due to their stellar live shows, neither possessed the raw energy and improvisation of Cream. The fact that their amazing sound was created by only three musicians made this even more impressive.

Right from the first notes of "N.S.U.", the magic of their live show is in full force. Bruce's vocals are very enthusiastic and the long jam that follows is nothing short of amazing. With Baker providing the anchor, Clapton lays out a long solo which bounces between tasty lead work and relentless power chords. Bruce's bass playing matches the proceedings, whether he's providing fast runs or slower melodic work. The mid-tempo blues of "Sleepy Time Time", while not quite as electrifying, provides a showcase for Clapton's lead work while Bruce and Baker's playing remains busy while not abandoning the original theme. "Sweet Wine" is an awesome example of the band's interplay. Bruce's counter bass lines provide the perfect accompaniment for Clapton's solos. However, it is Baker's drumming which holds it all together, changing in mood throughout while Clapton and Bruce follow his lead. At over 15 minutes, there is not one boring moment to be heard. Their cover of the blues standard "Rollin' and Tumblin'" is awesome, as this time Clapton and Baker provide the backbone for Bruce's energetic harmonica playing. The album concludes with a studio version of "Lawdy Mama", which is basically "Strange Brew" with different lyrics. In conclusion, Live Cream is an excellent album that showcases one of the best live bands that have ever performed. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars 5+ stars for the music, 2 stars for the album. .......2005-09-29

There is not a doubt in my mind that every single second of music on this CD is on fire. Cream, in my opinion, the finest jam band that ever existed. I used to be fanatically into the Dead, trading shows of theirs for years. But then I stopped experimenting, if you know what I mean, and stopped listening to them. Forget the Dead, forget String Cheese or any other jam band on the planet. The only jam band I ever listen to now is Cream, simply because they were geniuses.

They were geniuses because the spontaneity, melodicism, and fearlessness in their improvisation has never been equaled in rock, and rarely so in jazz. I mean, listen to the mind-blowing improv in Sweet Wine (15:08) and NSU (10:13) and understand just how truly gifted these guys were. Cream wasn't your typical jam band because they didn't have the typical jam band "everybody get high and let's see what happens" attitude. No. They listened to each other, felt the groove, and just played their hearts out, sometimes even inventing mini-"songs" in their improv. The '60s were notorious for recklessly overlong jams and solos from clueless bands stoked up on hash gas (with the POSSIBLE exception of some Dead and Quicksilver), but Cream's stuff has, for the most part, held up remarkably well. They were truly the "cream of the crop," and anybody who was too far below their level often tried to jam like them often failed miserably. They should have placed signs at their shows that said: "Don't try this at home, hippies."

Was Cream perfect? No. I have heard directionless Cream jams here and there, but those are fairly rare. Yet Cream still gets crapped on by clueless critics who have rarely even picked up instruments, never played in bands, and never been able to understand the genius of this band. They bitch about things like "overlong, directionless jams" and "Clapton's overindulgence." HELLO! You need to be virtually DEAF to not hear the level of musicianship in this stuff.

I believe that I am qualified to review and praise this kind of music because I have been playing guitar for over 15 years and KNOW what playing in a band is like. And let me tell you, from my experience, Cream was and is unbeatable. Even on their absolute worst night, they were still better than most bands can play. Iconic bands like the Who, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and a few others are up there with Cream, but none of those bands, in terms of instrumental virtuosity, have come close (though I will admit that Bruce/Brown never wrote melodies as memorable as Townshend, Lennon/McCartney, and Page/Plant, respectively).

The only thing that docks this album a star is the way the music is presented. This album was obviously released as a "quickie" to make money off of Cream's ample fanbase. If both volumes had been released as a double album, then perhaps it would do justice to this band's talent.

I bet you Clapton only WISHES he could play like this today. The upcoming MSG shows should be good and the RAH shows in May were good, but obviously nowhere close to the level of the original band. Although it is still cool to hear them do "Badge," which the original Cream never did live.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

5 out of 5 stars MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LAB BRINGS BOTH LIVE CREAM VOLUMES TO LIFE. .......2007-04-12

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic live albums entitled "CREAM - LIVE CREAM & LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands and the greatest three-man supergroup ever assembled. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, C-R-E-A-M. "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME I" was originally released in 1970 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Polydor Records label which is under license from PolyGram Records. "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" was originally released in 1972 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Polydor Records label which is also under license from PolyGram Records. Both these volumes would see their day of release on Compact Disc in the late 80's. This special edition two volume Gold CD set was originally released in 1995 in the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING / ULTRADISC II series by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. Please believe me when I tell you that these ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING CD's are far more superior then the regular CD's. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has really added more to the CREAM legend and legacy by bringing these live performances to life and can now be heard the way it was truly intended to be heard. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning these legendary live albums or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

CREAM will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for becoming the greatest three-man supergroup ever assembled. When guitarist Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker perform live on stage, you can actually feel the power of their music flowing through their amplifiers. Believe it or not, fifty percent of CREAM'S recorded output was taken from their live performances. And the two Gold discs which comprise this Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab 2-CD set, "LIVE CREAM" and "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" were the final CREAM albums isuued in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Despite the four years between the first and last issuance of CREAM'S concert material, all of these officially released live performances were recorded in 1968 in California during their spring and fall tours. In my opinion, "LIVE CREAM" and "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" is truly without a doubt, a true testament of sheer craftfully skilled genius and musical creativity of three legendary masterminds. These live landmark albums is also a fine fitting tribute to a great three-man supergroup that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

"LIVE CREAM, VOLUME I" contains four songs from their first album, "FRESH CREAM." "N.S.U." was recorded at the Winterland in San Francisco, California on 10 March 1968. "Sleepy Time Time" was also recorded at the Winterland on 9 March 1968. "Sweet Wine" was also recorded at the Winterland during the second set on 10 March 1968. "Rollin' And Tumblin'" was recorded at the Filmore West on 7 March 1968. Track number five which is "Lawdy Mama," is actually an out-take from the "DISRAELI GEARS" sessions and cannot in any way be considered a live performance, thematically or otherwise.

"LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" was issued with little fanfare in 1972. This disc begins with three numbers found on the "WHEELS OF FIRE" album. "Deserted Cities Of The Heart," "White Room" and "Politician" were all recorded at the Oakland Coliseum on 4 October 1968. "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" was recorded at the Winterland on 10 March 1968. "Sunshine Of Your Love" was also recorded at the Winterland but on 9 March 1968. "Steppin' Out" was also recorded at the Winterland on 10 March 1968.

It is now time to let the music of CREAM speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME I" begins with the ten minute blistering and powerful "N.S.U.," the slow but powerful "Sleepy Time Time," the merciless fifteen minute "Sweet Wine," the train roaring and harmonica filled Blues song "Rollin' And Tumblin'" and the studio outtake song in which the music is actually "Strange Brew," "Lawdy Mama." END OF "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME I."

"LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II" take right where Volume I left off and begins with the fast and energetic "Deserted Cities Of the Heart," the forever CREAM trademark killer Rocker "White Room," the slow and evil sounding Blues song "Politician," the refreshing and soulful Rocker "Tales Of Brave Ulysses," the forever CREAM trademark thunderous Rocker "Sunshine Of Your Love" and the fourteen minute groundbreaking blasting Rocker "Steppin' Out." END OF "LIVE CREAM, VOLUME II." May I also add that Clapton played a mean guitar in both the Volumes. Clapton delivered some of Rock's greatest guitar riffs and licks during the recording of these live performances. Clapton was red hot and on fire!

Overall, this is one hell of a CREAM two volume live album worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard CREAM fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of CREAM, I would start by purchasing all four of CREAM'S albums before preceeding on to this album. However, there are a few CREAM greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into and check out before you make your final decision as to which CREAM album(s) is right for you. You can purchase all of CREAM'S albums through Amazon com or Borders. When you purchase any album by CREAM, you will be glad that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary live masterpiece two volume albums to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. These legendary live two volume albums has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great live two volume album that no hardcore music fan as well as a devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, CREAM LIVES! With their recent extremely successful reunion tour in 2005, the world still wants more CREAM. CREAM has already received the highest ultimate honor by being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame despite already leaving their mark in Rock n' Roll history forever. How about it guys? ONE MORE TIME. So here's to you Eric, Jack and Ginger. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CREAM FOREVER. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars jack, ginger, and eric at their ultimate best!!!!!!.......1998-12-24
