In England, Viva Brasil has been on the inside track for a long time. DJ's especially love to spin "Skindo-le-le", the opening song of the album. Until today, Viva Brasil was nearly impossible to find in even the most specialized of record shops, save for bootlegs or limited editions that only collectors were allowed to enjoy.

Almost twenty years after the birth of this quite legendary and peculiar album, it is being re-released from the original source tapes to digitally remastered CD (7BR 3984 26694-2), so that Viva Brasil's classics once again can be found in your local or virtual record store.

The year was 1980. The place-- San Francisco. After several years gigging up and down the California West Coast, a group of Brasilians who migrated to the Golden State goes into a recording studio simply to record their band repertoire. The band's name is Viva Brasil and as it goes, so is the title of the record from that session: VIVA BRASIL.

Back in Brasil, bandleader and songwriter Claudio Amaral had already began pursuing his musical ambitions. After a visit to the San Francisco Bay Area in the "Post-Hippie" seventies, he remained in the city and made his living by being a street musician. Not long after, he performed in cafes and got booked to play small venues throughout the city. His one-man Brasilian show began to take the form of a real band, as other musicians often dropped in to play.

Claudio's natural songwriting talent proved to be very attractive to the funk, soul and hippie rock of local established musicians. Soon, a core of Brasilian and Californian musicians emerged, whose love for Brasilian music, together with the musical influences of the Bay Area, is what created the unique sound and charm of Viva Brasil's first album.

Ostensibly a selection of Brazilian rhythmic offerings to coincide with (cash in on?) the 2006 World Cup, I put on this disc on expecting to soon be bored by reworked classics or lame European imitations of what Brazil music should sound like. But I was wrong - 100% wrong - this is a classic with not one dud track. Whoever put this collection together should be congratulated. It is on a par with GP in Brazil 1 and 2 and the best of the Brazilian Beats CDs. Every track sounds very fresh and alive. Just try to stop yourself from turning up the volume.

            Viva Brasil, the group that gave us the club classic Skindo-le-le, returns to the spotlight with their third album Messages.

            The band that started out with Amaral's musical journey from Brazil to sunny California some 20 years ago has come into full fruition on this album. As Silva proclaims in the track "Brasil de Hoje (Brazil Today)," "…Afar from cultural roots, music… I find myself one day singing and I don't understand it… singing powerful songs coming from my heart." Eleven powerful new songs, written by bandleader Claudio Amaral and keyboardist Marcos Silva, will delight all fans of Brazilian music.

            Messages reflects the maturity of the band as songwriters and players. Each song is beautifully arranged, using modern brazilian rhythms, lush vocal harmonies, and world class musicianship. Perhaps more remarkable is the simplicity of the melodies and the universality and depth of the lyrics. Claudio's great voice soars from song to song, conveying both positivity and melancholy as only he can. From the light "Primavera (spring)" or "Linda Demais (So Beautiful)," a soft serenade to a pretty girl passing by, to the funky "Gira (Spin)" which touches on the cycles of life and the traditional "Meu Violão (My Guitar)," Viva Brasil is masterful at marrying words and music. Their musical pictures flawlessly paint themselves. You can almost smell the happy, drunken lad sung about in "Simpatia (Charming Dude)" or trace the footsteps of the character in "Aguas Belas" as he makes his way North (maybe a subtle reference to Claudio himself). Two instrumental pieces, "Gafieira" and "Pro Horta" round out the party while the new recording of "Skindo-le-le" is a pleasant addition.

            In "Gira" Claudio sings, "At every beat a flower blossoms…I am happy and pleased, I want to share it with everyone." We get the Message.

            Two masters of Brazilian Music got together here to make a truly interesting and invigorating project;
            - Carlos Amaral : Founder of the group,Songwriter, Producer, Guitar and Bass Player.
            and...
            - Marcos Silva : Songwriter, Band Leader, Producer, Arranger, Keyboard and Piano player.

            The interesting part of this album is that these two vituosos took songs written by others and some by themselves, and found the way to give them a fresh and inventive new twist in the most pure Brazilian Jazz sense; songs that standout are:
            * Sonhos / written by Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins
            * Beiral / written by Djavan
            * Cosa Feita / written by Joao Bosco and Aldir Blanc
            * Aquarela Do Brasil / written by Ari Barroso
            etc.
            Most of these ingenious arrangements are contributed mainly to master keyboardist Marcos Silva, who at this point in 1992, had just come out of recording two superb albums with his previous group The Intersection.
            Besides Marcos' contribution, is also important to note Carlos Amaral's guitar style and vocal techniques; a tremendous combination between Rio de Janeiro's Samba heritage and San Francisco's Jazz influence.

            I could spend a lot more lines praising this album, but until you purchase it and have the blessing to hear it, you'll have the chance to enjoy and appreciate all this musical watercolor.........

                I was unfamiliar with Harry and all the musicians who play in this album, but it was a good surprise to listen to them; they play pretty good Brazilian Jazz with excellent Vibes and Marimba & Flute with a lot of SouthAmerican accents like Lambada and a slight touch of Cumbia. The best pieces are:
                The Road Back to Sao Paulo / Lamba Playa and Love Juice.
