Some Wu members, like Cappadonna, are overly concerned with the way they dress, while others are a plain ol' inebriated mess (read: Ol' Dirty Bastard). For the GZA, it's all about the lyrics. With his nasal delivery and rapid-fire flow, he is the most experienced and oldest member of the Wu Tang Clan (he released a pre-Wu LP on Cold Chillin' Records entitled Words from the Genius in 1991). GZA's forte is battle rhymes (on his self-titled cut he declares that wack MCs' "lyrics are weak, like clock radio speakers"). On "Labels" he eloquently pens a complete song using only rap record label names. Loaded wordplay aside, beat-wise Liquid Swords is fully and exceptionally RZA-produced (peep the electric guitars and spacey synths on "Investigative Reports"). Liquid Swords is a perfect purchase for rap fiends who crave ill experimental beats and even iller punchlines. --Dalton Higgins

The acknowledged head of the Wu-Tang Clan, Genius (a.k.a. GZA) delivers the fifth Wu-banger with his sophomore solo album. Musically, LIQUID SWORDS is the Clan's strongest solo release to date, and lyrically, Genius comes correct with a style he describes as "too swift to bite."
LIQUID SWORDS is comprised of two types of songs, all backed by the rza's skillful production. On the one hand, Genius schools the Clan's followers through songs that address serious problems experienced in every day inner-city life. "Cold World," which is backed by whirling wind sound, contains mini-stories that illustrate the misfortunes of gun-slinging in the hip-hop community. "Investigative Reports" goes even deeper in administering the blame, suggesting that drug-related crimes stem from a higher authority. On the other hand, there are the Clan's kung-fu metaphors, which show up on Genius' more Wu-styled songs. On "Duel Of The Iron Mic," he's joined by a number of fellow Clansmen to reinstate the idea that no one can match them, despite numerous attempts to copy their image and concepts. Similarly, the production on songs like "4th Chamber" and "Shadowboxin'" closely relates them to 36 chambers, and helps make liquid sword a complete classic.

The best cd i own till diz day..........2007-07-01

I listined to 36 chambers and all other solo projects from wu menbers except ugod cause he's wack... But man gza ? Diz guy is the best... Liquid swords is one of those albums that will live on forever. Best tracks ? "cold world" , "4th chamber" , "shadowboxin" a classic.

This is really a great disc. The GZA isn't my favorite Wu-Tang MC and (people will hate my for this) I don't think he's the most talented (I'm gonna side with Ghost) and I certainly don't think this is the best We solo disc (Cuban Linx has a tighter concept.) But, again, this is a really great disc.
It showcases what the GZA does best, and that's old school rhymes with clever metaphors and punchlines. RZA's production on Liquid Swords is slowed down from Cuban Linx and even 36 Chambers, which allows the GZA to move at his own pace. The most prominent guests - Method Man and Inspectah Deck - work well to complement what is going on. Indeed, I don't think Deck has sounded better than this album (Duel of the Iron Mic, Cold World.) Meth's work on Shadowboxin' makes some of the dopest verses you'll ever hear ("fiend to catch a n***a snoozin'/slip the cardiac/arrest me/exorcist hip-hop possess me/crunch a n***a like a Nestle/you know my steeze")
The Genius also has a chance to shine on concept songs like Labels and Killah Hills 10304 in a way that he doesn't on Wu-Tang posse tracks. As mentioned by other reviewers, Labels is constructed around the names record labels and is a cautionary tale about thinking that a record deal is going to solve your problems ("Tommy ain't my muthaf***in Boy/when he fakes moves on a n***a he employ".) Killah Hills is the kind of in-depth drug dealer narrative that you would expect from Ghostface or Raewkwon, but the GZA holds his own, creating an even grimier scene than either of them (except maybe Ghost's "Malcom" from Supreme Clientele.)
The only "problems" occur when GZA flows over quicker beats with quicker MCs - notably on 4th Chamber and Investigative Reports. RZA, Rae and Ghost have such quick, dexterous flows and rapid fire rhymes that the songs seem to drag under the GZA's straight-forward, laid-back delivery. I realize this has more to do with preferences, so I still give the album five stars, but it's something that's always stood out to me.
All in all, this is a fantastic piece of work from a very talented MC and worth every penny you would ever have to pay for it. It makes me long for the golden era of mid-90's NY hip-hop. Buy, listen, enjoy.

The Year of the Wu Indeed.......2007-03-17

It's hard to figure out why GZA's masterpiece did not get even more recognition. This album justifies his "Genius" nickname. Dark and heavy, superbe production by the RZA and tongue twisting lyrics by the usual Wu-Tang suspects. The extracts from the movie "Shogun Assassin" solidify the whole Shaolin flavour of the album. If you've never listened to Wu-Tang, you should absolutely try this album along with "Enter the 36 Chambers", "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" and "Ironman". These albums represent everything that is (or at least was) great about hip hop.

The best hip-hop record ever comitted to disc.......2007-03-02

It actually defies description. From the moment the disc starts spinning to the second it stops, you're taken to another world. This will never be topped in any way, shape or form. The CD cover says it all - it is a battle of epic proportions inside your head. If you don't own this, you've missed out on how good an album can be. Period.

Bouncing back from the deplorably mediocre Beneath the Surface, GZA reasserts his position at the head of the Wu-Tang corpus. The most obvious improvement is in the production, masterminded by various Wu-Tang acolytes of RZA's dissonant funkalistics. Beats are kept simple--one- and two-bar loops sampled from across the musical spectrum--but despite their austerity, they're impressively efficient sonic packages that complement GZA's own powerfully compact lyrical style. The self-proclaimed "ill rhyme kicker / with no parental sticker" rolls with almost nonstop braggadocio on the album, flashing his virtuosity with metaphorically inspired songs like "Fame" and "Animal Planet" and wordplay parties such as "Knock, Knock" and "Sparring Minds." The album's main liability is that it's consistent to a fault. The 15 tracks begin to sound like variations on one another and, despite the individual qualities of any given song, the overall album begins to get monotonous halfway through. --Oliver Wang

I picked up this CD recently and I find GZA's rhymescheme to be excellent as expected. GZA hasn't lost his stee a bit when it comes to the ryhmes and the thoughts on this CD.Though,it still isn't as good as Liqiud Swords,it still comes pretty damn close. The only thing I didn't like about this CD is some of the production. This Q-Base guy is alright, I suppose, and Mathematics drops an incredible beat on "Fam" with Masta Killa and RZA. RZA drops a beat on this CD whoch I wasn't feeling at all. He could've done better with his reputation and his work on other Wu classics. other than that, the CD is packed with genius rhymes and Wordplay which is what you should be looking for, anyway.

Grown Man Music (Hip-Hop).......2006-12-07

Though my favorite Wu member is Ghostface, I've been on this kick listening to Raekwon's Vatican Mixtape V2 as well as the Grandmasters album by DJ Muggs and GZA...and while doing so, I thought, "I've been sleepin'"...then I went on this frantic search for Legend of The Liquid Sword...a lot of people say this album is 'just ok' due to the fact RZA isn't doing all or most of the beats like he used to...well 2 things...1. RZA's style of beats aren't the same as they were when he did the earlier albums (translated: it ain't gon' really matter no way) and 2. This is a great album anyway...this is Grown Man Music (for other examples, check: Fishscale (Hustlin' music on an adult level), Street's Disciple, The Game Theory, Kingdom Come (not really feelin' it that much...YET), Grandmasters and The Fix (to name a few)...music (hip-hop) that 30-plus year old MCs' need to be making...it's one thing to wanna keep up with the times and put out the product the industry says makes the most money...but face it, the Wu's heyday were the 90's...and this is the kind of music only grown up or progressive minded people can appreciate.

The thing about this particular album is that listening to GZA is like listening to an old wise man on the corner...his flow is real meticulous and conveys in-depth detail...what I like about the Wu members is how they take and borrow from each other and flip certain lyrics in their own lil way or they use their own old lyrics and flip it to meet the times...the sonic landscapes on this album are the perfect match for GZA's flow...while he doesn't have that loud voice or switch up his flow too much, the beats (thematic) enhance it without him getting lost in them...another thing about the beats...they are not wack (honestly, if you don't feel like getting brain-overload by focusing on the rhymes...just roll with the beats.

remenber listining to 4th chamber ? Cold world ?shadowboxin ? Those songs were raw and dark and grimy but damn Genius's legend of the liquid sword is garbage... It doesnt have that raw feeling it had in the previous album. Im so disspointed. Wutang is nothing like they used to be anymore except for ghostface killa the rest is just garbarge... Gza/genius's "legend of the liquid sword" is a sad dissapointment.

This is a pretty good disc not as good as the first but probably will never top that one.The disc I have has the explicit lyrics throughout,so whatever that dude has was the clean cd both times.

Wow. I can't believe I have slept on this album for so long. GZA shreds through this album with some of the illest rhymes, concepts, ideas, and flow I have heard in awhile. I loved every minute of it and suggest to every Wu and Hip Hop fan alike to cop this album ASAP!

Bar none one of the top 100 Hip Hop Albums of all time.

Where's Showtime?.......2007-03-26

Ok, I'm biased. I'm a trombone player. And the sometimes musicians have to move on to other things. I understand. I do, however, miss their trombone player a great deal, as he had a style and intensity unlike many others. Some tracks just scream for one of "showtime"'s raging, strident slide rides. It's a shame. The album, however, wicked. MMMUCH better than their last effort: "Evolution". No doubt many will give it 5 stars, yet, when it comes to MY OWN enjoyability of the album, I give it 4 due to large void throughout the album in which trombone should be giving bottom and cajones to the horns.

My personal opinion: Make Some Noise is still the benchmark disc for this band. Only Mars Williams remains from the earlier recordings and while he's good, this disc just doesn't cook the way Make Some Noise did. I'd give this one a pass.

If anyone complains about this album, it's because Mars set a standard for perfection in Make Some Noise. But reviewed alone, this album is just more of that same, boring, 5 star excellence. It must be hard being that good.

I listen to everything, and of all the bands I've seen live, I can promise that no one has ever left a Liquid Soul concert without a silly grin on their face. Young, old, white, black, rap, jazz, funk, rock, soul, big band, pop - whatever you're in to, open your mind and let the Liquid Soul flow.

"ONE-TWO PUNCH"

A clever title for the album of a band trying to make their come back. I fell in love with their earlier works. And now after five years of hibernating LIQUID SOUL is fighting their way back on the scene.

Great band to see live performing a new repotoire as well as mixing in some of the old songs.

I found this album as a great music to have playing in the background, but it also has potential to be the forefront music at the disco tech.

Sax solos, guitar solos, hip beats

I can't believe what I'm hearing. The essence of Hip-Hop still exists, and it's a beautiful thing. I would recommend this for meditation (yes, meditation), just chillin' at home, the drive home from work, date music, you name it. The tributes are the best to me, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is one song I just don't care for. I promise that if you are a 30-something that grew up listening to real hip hop (Not the crap that they are playing nowadays), you will not waste your money.

"Mad Blunted Jazz" is awesome. So if you want a DJ Cam CD then buy that one. If you already have that one and want more DJ Cam, then "Liquid Hip Hop" will just let you down.

ya know, im writing this review at 2:30 in the morning, and i found that in my comatose state it's easier to write about this and express my true sadness. I really and truly am sad about this album. I wanted so badly to like it, but when listening, it really isn't very good. Cam decides to bring out his turntables for some scratching... maybe not a great idea. i have to agree with a fellow reviewer, he's not the best of scratchers. Someone of his reputation could have gotten someone like kid koala, wouldn't you think? The beats sound too generic, too flat, there's not enough substance. The scratching is boring, the music just isn't cam. It's supposed to be like old school cam but it's not, it's just bad. Look at albums like the french connection and mad blunted jazz (one of the best albums ever). Why can't he do something like that. Sadly, he seems to be digressing. But perhaps this is just a sign he's on his way back to creating good musc. Soulshine was just odd. it wasn't cam, but if you look at it like its a different artist altogether, its actually pretty good. But this really isn't very good, its too repetitive, not really jazzy. It just really doesn't seem like cam, or how he used to be. and maybe its just me, but, doesn't the sound of the street sound an awful lot like "skilz" by gangstarr? but i don't know, maybe i'm just dissapointed because this is cam, the greatest french dj to walk the earth. If you looked at this from another perspective such as... it's not dj cam, it's good, but i think he could do so much better. so sorry,

Liquid Hip-Hop.......2004-12-17

A grainy, black and white self-developed photograph of a rain soaked metropolitan boulevard and a strutting pedestrian holding an umbrella. The cover art says it all: a chilled mood, a little hip-hop grime and an artsy swagger...this is DJ Cam's return to the beats-and-bliss, jazz-inflected hip hop he's been tweaking since his 1994 debut. A move like this can only be seen as positive, since Cam's career has slid downward with his smoother-than-smooth approach that Loa Project Vol. 1 suggested and Soulshine flat-out screamed (leaving longtime fans scratching their heads in its wake). Here, Cam squelches the fake jazz and turns up the bass, the modal piano samples, and his best friend and partner in crime, the turntable. He's even got Guru and Jay Dee thrown in there, just in case anyone forgot that he's one of the most prominent musical forces this side of instrumental hip-hop.

So then, why is Liquid Hip-Hop still not a success? For one, it lacks the subtlety of his earliest work. Underground Vibes and Substances weren't speaker-blowing, but because they sounded confident hybridizing hip-hop beats and modal jazz, they packed more of a punch than anything in DJ Cam's catalog. The piano scales on "6th Sense," upright bass on "Premier" and trumpet on "Don Dada" all regress to the green fields of his early material, but everything seems louder, more bombastic, more exposed this time around. For another, along the same lines as what I mentioned before, there's simply too much. Too much sampling, too much attention to beatwork, too much glossy production. "6th Sense" starts out promisingly, with shimmering vibes and one of Cam's most strategic scratching techniques at the end of each phrase, but a little over a minute into the song and synth-strings and an idiotic female vocal sample invade and ruin everything. Cam has succeeded before in doing more with less, so an album that features him doing less with more can only be described as frustrating.

Finally, Liquid Hip-Hop has forced me to reconcile with one of the most dreaded skeletons in the closet I can think of: DJ Cam isn't a very good turntablist. He's not horrible, but with such bright stars as Rob Swift and Kid Koala rapidly taking over the scene, Cam needs to either inject some charisma into his scratching or back off of it altogether. The "wickey-wahs" once provided auxiliary accents to Cam's production, but on Liquid Hip-Hop they're the main attraction, yielding some awkward results the great majority of the time. (Look no further than the confused, overwrought "Kalimba Groove" for validation.)

Cam's latest offering can hardly be deemed a disaster, but only because it's not a failed departure and is instead an extension of his tried-and-true methods that falls flat nine times out of ten. Returning to his jazz-hop roots was a step in the right direction, but now that he knows what he wants, he still has a ways to go before he figures out how to execute it. Fortunately, that shouldn't be too difficult; after all, Cam got it right the first few times. Here's to hoping that he someday reverts his eyes backward instead of blindingly ahead.

Liquid Gold.......2004-04-17

Dj Cam (Laurent Daumail) comes full circle hittin' on all cylinders with his latest Hip-Hop/ Jazz excursion. This latest compilation on Cam's now infamous underground label (Inflamable) proves that the "audio alchemist" continues to serve up the rawest beats, jazz loops, and still manages a cut or two that pays homage to hip hop's greatest talents. He's evolved but he still maintains that edge that's made him popular amongst hip hop and jazz aficianados. After the first few rotations I likened this compilation to some of his best work to date including his debut "Mad Blunted Jazz". Featuring classic Cam jazz riffs as well as some well orchestrated string arrangements that were prominent on his other instrumental, and equally monumental, album "Substances", the album deserves top shelf status. The beats and cuts are strong and tight and when coupled with Cam's laid back yet hard hitting style this is one that anyone who's been into the underground scene would be privileged to give heavy rotation to. Those in the know, know and those that aren't play 50 cent. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I'd rather have two new tracks rather than the "Espionage" and "Love Junkee" remixes.**The Japanese version includes a second "Espionage" remix that is deliciously cut up. Still, if your a Cam fan you'll want it and if you're not...you haven't been to the underground.

**An additional note: The Imported UK version does have Copy control so it won't play on Windows Media Player. As a result, I was unable to get it transfered onto my MP3 player. The Japanese version is not copy controlled and did play using Windows Media Player and was able to transfer to my MP3 player.

What a beautiful album! I can't believe no one has reviewed this yet. The vocals, beats and production on this make it a masterpiece. I enjoyed every track! U-Gene's voice reminds me a little of Michael Jackson from the Off The Wall era. This "hip-soul" joint from the Dutch Kindred Spirits label (Rich Medina, Jneiro Jarel, Peven Everett, etc.) has got it all. Even Phonte (of Little Brother fame) blesses a track on this! Lots of people freely give 5 stars to albums, but this one is truly flawless. If you like soulful vocals over funky basslines and hip-hop beats, then this is your cup of tea. Get it while it's hot?

I think this album is trash, I think Ice needs to quit while he has a little dignity left....maybe go back to the surreal life......but. Someone on here was ripping on all whit e rappers calling this "a sin" and "filth" and that hes the "biggest joke in the industry.. Now, not defending Mr. Van Winkle, but how is it filth for him to do this but not EVERY OTHER RAPPER IN THE GAME???, Also, as far as "white" rappers, Eminem has talent, and when this ass came out he did too (for his time period). Also, he's not the biggest joke in the game. That title would be a tie.... Jay Z (because he got ripped apart by Camron.. Camron for christs sake!!!!) and of course, who could forget the talentless Benzino.. Benzino is the biggest joke ever.. I could rap circles around him, and I hate hip hop

First off, the cover is repulsive enough. The dumb wh*re in the background, and Ice up front wit no shirt on. I've had just about enough of these dumb, talentless white rappers coming into the scene. How can they even let him sell this thing anyway? That cover is already enough to nausiate me. Now let'z git to the trax themselvez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this moron is about to bust my last nerve! I'm so sick of this stupid talentless hack wit his stupid cheesy remake of Queen & David Bowie's classic "Under Pressure", now he makes an album about somethin' this meaningless?! Wow Vanilla Ice is my god he's just soo cool like I look up to him every day! It's such an inspiration to see that his first album has 111 reviews on Amazon, his album after that has 180, his album after that has 80, his album after that has 42, and Hot Sex has twenty!! It just goes to prove what a lasting impact he has, that people are still reviewing his CDs years later!

Oh who am I kidding, he's an idiot. But he provided me with plenty of laughs on The Farm. Great guy!
