3 out of 5 stars pretty tired tracks create little desire to dance.......2005-06-07

A sexy dark anthem by Melonie Daniels' begins things off. Then we get a mix of Void (not my favorite, which is the junior mix, but this moody mix works here). Track 3 is an edgy instrumental, the Yello track is snooze city. Sandstorm always offers something pumpin and interesting, but track 6 is just repetitive noise. And track 7 is no better. DULL. And again on track 8. Then suddenly, we get another fierce diva track in Sense of Danger. And the disc ends of with a light, airy track with a trancey feel. Over all, this is not a particularly interesting mix. Too much uninspired instrumental stuff. Track times:

1. don't you ever give up (5:26)
2. void (7:05)
3. heaven scent (6:34)
4. squeeze please (7:31)
5. the return of nothing (10:05)
6. Diablo (8:29)
7. Holdin On (6:16)
8. Magnificat(9:38)
9. Sense of Danger (5:33)
10. Seven Cities (6:55)

4 out of 5 stars Edge? NOT!.......2000-09-19

Oh, please, this stuff is as cutting edge as early digital music.

OK, it is good, but its' "behind the times", and frankly way too conservative to stand out from so many other CD's. Digital trance, techno, and breakbeat have gone way beyond what this CD offers. Not that all the really cutting edge stuff is good, and this CD fortunately avoids the near-psychotic wierdness that characterizes some of the really experimental techno/trance CD's.

But check out DJ Icey's Essential Mix, the TRACEPORT CD's by Paul Oakenfold & Dave Ralphs, or some of the Global Underground if you want to hear the best Cutting Edge stuff.

No for cover art... well THAT is On the Edge, like all of the Global Groove CD's. One day, I hope Global Groove can put mixes out that are as irresistable as the covers of their CD's.

3 out of 5 stars Less Trance, More Dance, Please.......2000-05-10

I'm a little disappointed in this one -- mostly because it's just not what I expected. Centaur Music said it was a differnt kind of release for them, and they're certainly right about that. It's subtitled "Edge" and features more stunning photos of the "Groove" stud in designer S&M leather. So, I expected this set to have a harder, grittier sound, but moreover it's a collection of too-long trance beats. By far, the best song on this 10-track CD is Catapila's "Void (I Need You)" -- her longing vocal style really complements the chaotic beat to create a sense of longing. There's two other songs with singers here (Innervision feat Melonie Daniels, Presence feat Shara Nelson), which are okay, but not necessarily moving. I was surprised to see a new release from Yello (remember "Oh Yeah" from Ferris Beuhler), but his fast-talking "Squeeze Please", Skynet UK's "Holdin' On," and Lyter and the Peace Posse's "Magnificat" surely belong on the soundtrack of a moody horror movie. The rest could be used as intro music for "Dr Who." "The Return of Nothing" by Sandstorm is the closest thing I expected to hear -- with it's droning industrial beat and synths which remind me of a plane about to crash. But that seems to get spoiled too because this mix is just way too long. The average length of each track is over seven minutes -- I know I was like, "Okay, what's next?" Maybe it's a good CD if you're really into trance. Or maybe it's better if you're flying on something at a club at 7am, I don't know. Maybe I'll just look forward to the next release, "Thrill," in this still-new monthly series.
