You're having a dinner party. The in-laws are going to be there. So are some of your closest "after-hours" friends. You need music, something mellow but not despicably insipid. Welcome to a double-disc set that will cover all the above bases. Featuring Dido's "Home with Me (Chillin' with the Family Mix)," St Germain's wonderful, downtempo "Sure Thing," and Royksopp's jaunty "Eple," it's mainstream enough for the progressive suburbanites in your midst. Meanwhile, Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" and "Nights Interlude" from Nightmares on Wax are culled from a deeper well of modern folk and jazz, respectively. The second disc, which contains some absolute gems, works overall as a more fluid mix. After Jakatta and Moby bring us further in, Dusted hit the dubbed-out trip-hop trail with "Childhood." Witchman (a.k.a. John Roome) has the set's best moment with "Leave No Trace (Dub)," a smoky bit of wicked seduction that makes for a marvelous chill-out gem. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent !.......2004-10-17

When I bought this disc I thought It'll be a little boring to listening... the reality is that I love this music a lot because is very relaxing and easy listening.
Don't be affraid and get yours !!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best CDS Yet.......2004-06-28

When I first heard the cd, I was like man, this would be awesome to chill too, not knowing it was called Ultra Chill. When i found out i knew i had to have it so i bought volume 1 and 2. I loved Volume 1 with Nigntmares on Wax, Gorillaz, Dido, and many more. But when i put in Volume 2 i have to admit i was a little disappointed. But all in all i love both cds and if had a second chance would DEFINATELY buy agian.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not consistently good.......2004-01-05

I disagree with some other reviewers. I love Disc 2. It has a hip, mellow but uplifting mood, and flows nicely. Disc 1 is more hit and miss. I'm a bit sick of the Dido track; it's been around a while and used a lot it seems, or maybe it's just that it was the theme song for a TV show that has killed it for me. I've listened to Disc 2 far more than Disc 1. But I'd hesitate about spending full price on this double disc album when only one of the two discs is a keeper.

2 out of 5 stars Ultra bore.......2003-11-04

I really like chill music when I am working and relaxing but this had to be the biggest disappointment of all the chill CD's that I have purchased from Dido's poorly constructed vocal to whereever some of the other tracks got their inspiration it sounds like a compilation of leftovers.

3 out of 5 stars Chill Out.......2003-10-30

This cd is great for relaxing. Put it on, dim the lights, and relax.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cheese.......2007-01-06

This double-disc is chart trance. The tracks are radio-friendly cheese that you will likely find played on most radio stations. If you are into the club scene, and are hoping to find a cd that has that sound, you'll be disappointed with this purchase. However, if you're looking for something to listen to while getting ready to head out to a club, maybe this chart trance collection will suit your needs.

5 out of 5 stars hot dance tunes mixed up.......2006-11-07

It's not actually trance.. they are some of the best dance house tracks to get you up and moving. very enjoyable and full of energy.

5 out of 5 stars new to the music genre.......2006-10-07

I must say, growing up, i was never exposed to this kind of music. As a music Buff, i decided to give the genre a chance after finding that i was growing tired of the repetition of hip hop, pop and and all of the mainstream genres that i had only known of. I actually was exposed to this genre by a gay friend who took me to his favorite nightclub and i never really grew an interest for it. It wasn't until i bought this album that the interest emerged out of nowhere. I cannot stop listening to this album! Its down right awesome! The music takes control of your senses and you will find your head beating to every song on both cds! I must say i hope that Trance becomes more mainstream in the U.S. because we really are missing out. Anywho, i love this type of music, its so fun and engaging!

5 out of 5 stars THRIVE DOES IT AGAIN!.......2006-09-29

I absolutely love this album!!! I can't stop listening to it...I think I've been dancing since I got it last week. It's like going to the club without the $40 cover and line around the block.
When ThriveMix 01 came out, I bought it for the stellar tracklisting of songs I knew but hadn't heard remixes of, such as Kelly Clarkson, Nina Sky, and Ryan Cabrera, all of which turned out to be great. So when ThriveMix 02 came out I bought it on faith that they would continue the quality, and I was not let down. Now, here is a more focused album for those who love trance and not just the radio hits remixed.
It's hard to choose, by my favorite tracks are Narcotic Thrust's "Waiting For You", Late Night Alumni's "Empty Streets" and of course Tiesto's remix of "He's A Pirate". But I was pleasantly surprised with all the songs, including ones from artists I didn't know before, like Burning Spear or Luminary. I love Paul Oakenfold's remix of Burning Spear (who I found out is a reggae legend), and the remix of Imogen Heap's "Hide & Seek" works despite the emotional weight of the song (made popular by The O.C.). Also check out the great remixes of iio and Conjure One, and the very fun Bob Sinclar "World, Hold On", which IMHO is better than "Love Generation".

BUY THIS! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Full ahead non-stop trance.......2007-02-06

Christopher Lawrence never fails to disappoint....the cd is excellent with
Lawrences' usual high quality collection of thumping beats, skittering percussion, all marshalled around big melody breakdowns. Strong release.

5 out of 5 stars Trance x light techno dance entry that is in a different direction .......2007-01-04

2007 has rung in with more mainstream double albums that has surprised the competition with new names and some underground DJs moving up the ranks. Lawrence brings us an entry level Subculture, Vol. 01, 1 CD, album that instead of going the house/trance route as most are taking keeps the original transition of trance to techno alive in a way that reminds one of Paul Oakenfold. While Lawrence has a limited choice to mix from the selection is one of the best and resembles Sasha in many ways. At the same time Lawrence is less about creating a masterpiece album and more about thumping bass to a nightclub that wants to rock for an hour or so. While Subculture, Vol. 01 may not be the best bang for your buck when compared to its dual CD rivals once you are done with them it will become clear that this is also an essential. Absolutely worth investing.

4 out of 5 stars Christopher Lawrence- Subculture, Vol. 1.......2006-09-30

The new mix of Christopher Lawrence's "Subculture, Vol. 1" is a hard-hitting trance mix that is full of energy throughout the entire set. The mixing is very well done by Lawrence and is guarenteed to have people bobbing their heads to the energetic drums and intriguing synthesizers used in the tracks, if they are not dancing as if there is no tomorrow. I was reminded of some of the older trance I used to listen to around 2001 and 2002 when listening to the mix, being that trance has become more progressive and expeiramental over time. Don't get me wrong, I still listen to modern trance and DJ's that spin this newer genere, such as Oakenfold, Tiesto, PVD, Sasha & Digweed, Cattaneo, etc., but Lawrence sticks to his roots and tries not to get off track and blend other elements of other genres into this set. To me, this release is slightly better than some of the previous mixes he's had over the years. "Subculture, Vol. 1" is a worthy mix of slammin' trance that should be played very loud and very often.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best new Trance cd out there right now........2006-08-17

Good stuff. I think Chirstopher Lawrence is great to see but sometimes the albums cant match the intensity of his live work. This album is so much different. It is well produced and the songs mesh very nicely from start to finish. If i had to pick just one song on the album that i thought stood out (ok i replay it the most) it has to be 3d Time Lucky. But the album as a whole is just wonderful to listen too. Gets me really in the mood for going out or just fills the need for some great dance tunes. I cant wait till he comes back to PHX.

5 out of 5 stars Best PureTrance mix I have heard in '06 so far...........2006-08-16

....there are still a few more months to go though , and there seem to be an awful lot out there ...alot of them by big names. I didn't care for this guys earlier stuff , but he really brings it with his latest. It starts off bangin' and never really slows down other than to fool you....1st track is pure banging melodic trance. 2nd track seems abit repetitive at first , but slows then changes and takes the listener on a darker , harder turn. Track 3 was more hard stuff , but IMO was the weakest track in the set. Track 4 has lots of good hypnotic beats which take you on an aural journey. Track 5 has a trippy high nrg vibe. Track 6 is hooked in beautifully with the best mixing skill displayed on the set IMO. Track 7 puts the brakes on the set abit , then gets real danceable again. Track 8 starts out with an odd industrial vibe , then morphs into an acid house style tune...pretty cool ++ and one of the better tracks IMO. Track 9 keeps bringing it with a pulsating rhythem. track 10 has an intro that will make you grind your molars , all the while keeping up the torrid pace of the set. The rest is pretty much the same with track 12 providing a real spacey feel to the set. If you like hard driving trance , this is a MUST buy for you.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable.......2004-03-24

I revisited this one and was reminded how enjoyable and diverse is its flavor.

You've got funky beats, trippy grooves and complementary male and female voices to flesh things out.

Good entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Low Grade Techno.......2004-01-08

Let this serve as a warning: As a Depeche Mode fan, I assume that you are accustomed to quality electronic-oriented music. Well, this will not satisfy your tastes. It is horribly crafted and not worth your time. Version 1 was pretty decent, and I highly recommend it, but this album is unlistenable. I took mine back the very same day I purchased it. The equipment used sounds very outdated and is overall appalling. Check out some of the other electronic tribute albums before settling on this one. Better yet, get out your old early 80's 'metal clanging' DM remixes and save your money!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compliation of electronic music based on DM songs........1999-04-16

Well, I've listened to it more than a few times, and just like Transemode 1.01, the sequel presents remakes (not remixes) of DM songs. Some traks scream of the original versions, and others are more loosely based on the melodies first presented by DM. There are few lyrics, and creativity is in the beat. The bottom line: imagine Orbital meets Depeche Mode. The artists on this album have managed to mix the two into a variety of club worthy tracks. As a whole this album impressed me a bit less than the first, but that may be because the concept is not as new to me as it was the first time around. That does not detract from the originality of the tracks on this album. It's not a re-hash of the first, rather they keep it going with songs not touched the first time around. In other words, if you like a variety of electronic beats (all danceable) and you like DM, get it.

5 out of 5 stars Mode given a mood.......2005-11-18

This is very "Mood Music". Trancemode Express is a wonderful compilation of some of the best trance covers of Depeche Mode. You won't find hardly any of their popular songs on here with the exception of Strangelove and Master & Servant. But all the covers fill the same mood. This CD is great to throw in and take in the surroundings. It is relaxing and good music to drive to.

4 out of 5 stars the trance zone.......2004-03-24

adventurous, creative and multitextured.

A nice visionary project, well-executed.

5 out of 5 stars Total Mode.......2000-07-08

This album is a little unfocussed, but overall, it delivers on the theme of the Depeche Mode mindset. I find it energizing, if a little disconnected from the original product. You need to be an ultra-DM fan to recognize the melodies in a lot of the offerings on this CD, but the net effect is one of fun trance, with some deeper moments thrown in for good measure.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Depeche Mode and also tance - EXCELLENT !.......1999-01-01

DANO's review prompted me to buy this CD, and after hearing it I can say that he hit the mark very well. I will be more subjective: I enjoy Depeche Mode, and I also love electronic (trance, house, jungle etc.) The way this CD has blended the two is a real departure from any Remix or Single - and is far more impressive. While some tracks are more loosely based on the original songs than others, all tracks bring some melody or hint of the original - beyond that, it's a new experience. I enjoyed every track on this CD, which is quite rare. Despite the wisdom in DANO's review, I enjoyed this CD so much that I impulsively ordered the second - Tansmode 2.02. I will post a review for that one as soon as I hear it a few times.

5 out of 5 stars tribute to depress mode.......1998-07-16

This first Depeche Mode tribute is actually much better than the second one that was released around Summer 1997. Some of these interpretations are more straightforward than others, some are more ambient or ethno-trance while some are straightforward synth-pop. The highlight is "Get The Balance Right" which is kind of a duo between a guy and a girl. If you like Depeche than you know that you will like this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best, seriously.......2007-04-02

Where to start...
I would like to consider myself a music afficiando, having listened to literally thousands of cds and enough songs to fill 100 30g ipods in my life.
I listen to almost anything that is good, has presence and is somewhat original. That being said when it comes to the trance (or even d&b or hard house or any techno/dance) this is the BEST CD there is. Seriously it really isn't completely rivaled by much. Not to say that there aren't other awesome cds in the trance or progressive trance genre but this one (for me and anybody who've i've blessed with hearing it as well) takes the cake!
Every song on here is good, every song is mixed perfectly.
And the thing that makes this CD so special for me is because I first heard it from a friend who was big into trance and drum and bass and raving. He and his girlfriend copied this cd for me (along with about 25 others) and I don't know how the tracks weren't burned out of the cd. I listened to it that much.
an unfortunate event occured about 2 years after I recieved it...and i didn't talk to him or his girlfriend anymore...
some guy broke into my car and stole that whole book of cds that they gave me.
along with this cd.
it took me 4 years to find it again...and it happened kinda accidently. He didn't label any of the cds that he gave me so i had no idea who it was. I searched through quite a bit of cds before i gave up for a couple of years...
than one day i was listening to cds on amazon and low and behold i finally found it
this is definitely in my top 10 best albums to listen to ever...most inspirational
and just seriously one of the greatest...it needs to be heard anyway you can hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Define 'Cheese'.......2005-10-05

A lot of reviewers have criticised this CD for being cheesy, a term that is used ad nauseum by aficionados of progressive trance which they call 'intelligent' like it took more talent to write than an uplifting track. Please. A good track is a good track, and any good track takes talent, hard work and an open mind to create. Let's not slap a label like 'cheese' on anything that isn't progressive, or that has melodic vocals. I believe a pretty good definition of cheesy music is one that uncompromisingly caters to the mainstream, ie. Dj Sammy, Ian van Dahl, Dj Skribble, etc etc. and there is a HUGE difference between those guys and what you'll find on this album.

This CD is full of some of the finest cuts of uplifting epic from the glory days of the genre, when it was fresh, groundbreaking and improving (as opposed to now). This is by far Collins' best work on the decks, and there are almost too many standout tracks to mention. Armin van Buuren's breakthrough track, Communication, is perhaps the best known on the CD, as that trakc led Armin to a career of international superstardom and the founding of ASOT, the best trance radio show in the world by far. Also featured are trance giants Ferry Corsten (under guise of Moonman) as well as Laurent Verronez (half of Fire & Ice and having more aliases than Madonna has underwear, incl. Airwave, Velvet Girl), not to mention Dirk 'MIKE' Dierickx (who has almost as many aliases as L-Vee, incl. Push, Solar Factor) who is featured with a remix of a nice vocal track by Quadran. The list of big names on the Cd doesnt end there. Robert Smit, collaborator with Ferry Corsten on some early System F work is present under alter ego of Digital Blonde, one of Taucher's many brilliant remixes from this era is also there, as well as the breakthrough track from dutch producers Signum, who contribute another track under their real names as well, Ron Hagen and Pascal Minaard. Then you have Lange, one of Britain's premier uplifting producers contributing under name Exodus, and finally even hard trance producer jon the Dentist found his way on through a remix by k90.

ALL of the above mentioned artists have gone on to have successful production and Dj careers since!! Not many mixes, even Tranceport, can boast such a claim, attesting to Collins' superb penchant for picking these tunes.

Prog fans: how many Sasha, Howells or Deep Dish mixes can hold a candle to such an assemblage of pure talent? This is not to disparage those artists whom I also love, but to put things in perspective for you.

bottom line: this mix is in the league of Oakenfold's Tranceport for pure uplifting trance quality from the best years of that genre. take it from a very long time fan of trance that it doesnt get much better than this for uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2005-08-06

You owe it to yourself to check out this album if you like Club music. It has a bunch of good songs on it, and a couple of real winners. Good album.

4 out of 5 stars Good cheesy trance anthems.......2004-09-23

If you like intellegent progressive trance and not just anthems than this cd isn't for you. I myself don't just have to listen to great mixes by digweed and oakie or sasha. sometimes you really just wanna hear good tunes that mix well. This cd is good for what it is. Cheesy anthems. I love 'exodus' and ' lost in love' . Please don't piddle about with this cd if you like intellegent trance. This would be more of a cd to listen to if you were just gettin into techno and liked good catchy tunes. Its a beginner cd that people who don't know alot about trance or just techno in general say man that cd is awesome, where'd you get it. then you look at them like here have it. anyways the reason it gets a four is because the anthems are so enjoyable to listen to. So cheers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Trance Album ever made.......2004-06-10

For five years now, this has been my favorite trance album. Almost every song on it is perfect in balance, taste and intensity, and it is beautifully mixed by Kimball as well.

3 out of 5 stars A decent, upbeat mix.......2007-04-15

This CD is pretty good. It's uplifting, melodic with high BPM (beats per minute). Great to work out to. I give it a 3 only because it would have to be mind blowing to recieve a 4 or 5 from me. But it is definitely good, the mix flows nice and the music is pretty tight.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2006-07-17

When I read the title and CD's decription, I expected all the songs to feature great vocals set to house/techno music. I soon discovered that wasn't the case. One song has absolutely no vocals, and most of the other songs don't feature much vocal work at all.

It's too bad, because there are some amazing singers out there who could easily make a cd like this take off... but all they need is some space on the CD to do their thing. This CD could have been much, much better. Don't pay full price! Get it used.

5 out of 5 stars High energy creative mix.......2006-01-14

This is an excellent collection of high-energy, danceable, electronic music with good melodies and light female vocals. It's not overly repetitive, and there are very few "atmospheric" slow parts. I love listening to this CD while working out.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mix.......2005-03-19

Great mix with newer songs. Uplifting trance vocals, good song selection combine to make a good CD for any collector of trance music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd and a great overview of techno as a whole.......2005-06-26

This an excellent cd and a great overview of techno as a whole. It has songs that define the styles or sub genres of techno. It just has everything from trance (Tiësto/Paul van Dyk) to drum and bass (Dieselboy) to 80's electro (VHS or Beta) and lots of tracks that are just fun, I don't know how to classify them. Another great thing about this cd is that the tracks aren't mixed together. However Amazon.com listed it wrong (it has 16 tracks.) and, on the cd they listed track 13 like this: 'Junkie XL - Breezer feat. Sasha' I'm sure it was just a misprint. Here is my track listing.

01. Heroes - Tiësto
02. Crush (Hyper Remix) - Paul van Dyk

Album Description

With Seb's sound fully realized at both his club and on his non-stop global tour dates, it was fitting for Seb to launch the natural continuation of his legendary Prototype mix album series in the form of Type. With one eye on his established sound, and one eye on the future of electronic music, Seb puts forth his strongest effort to date on Type. The tracklisting is filled with tough, chunky, digital-edged house music (which Seb deems "electronic house"), and represents one of the most forward thinking efforts ever put forth on a Perfecto compilation. The mix also includes two Fontaine original productions: the funky chugger "Do The Do" produced with Jay P, and the soon to be huge "Need to Feel Loved", produced under the Reflekt moniker. Progressive, electro, trance, and house heads will all find something to like about this mix…

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Yeah, it's solid. But it could've been more; not a bad party choice........2007-01-27

What initially attracted me to this album were the incredibly infectious, hard-hitting beat-loops which caught me completely off guard as I listened to it at the record store. I decided to buy it, and I'm not REGRETTING the decision, but there are a few more albums with such intensity (perhaps ISOS3? Solarstone's Destinations Vol. 1?) which I would have rather spent my money on. But, this CD is strong.

Fontaine leads us through a two-disc myriad of breakbeat, thumping dance music. If clubs wont play progressive, minimal, melodic/vocal and tech house/trance, this is next in line. But dont mistake that: In its own right, this CD in every way belongs in a dark, anonymously misty and heart-thumping bass filled room crowded with Hi-NRG ravers and casual dancers alike.

Particularly on disc 1, however, the mix selections could have been just... well, just better. I HATE the track 'tweakin' (Saeed Mix), with its repetitive and glammed up song line, 'we, be tweakin, like every single weekend we be tweakin'. There are only so many times I can hear that line, in one single song, before having to skip ahead. My sanity depends on it. I liked the opening Noho Porn Stars' "More Intensity" which flows nicely into Rene Amesz's "Back Into the Funk", but unfortunately the antecedent to that track is "Tweakin'". I cant get past that fallacy of a track in its inopportunely placed location! I have tried.

I'll say a few short words on disc 2, because in terms of elaborative criticism there isnt much to be said. One standout track, and whose remix I really enjoyed by Fontaine, was Sander Kleinenberg's "My Lexicon" [Stef & 16 Bit Lolita Remix], as I am always excited to see it appear after being introduced to it on one of Sasha's Global Underground releases (Ibiza, I believe it was...). Otherwise, a great combination of breakbeat, hard-hitting and sometimes melodic trance without as much annoying vocal intrusion as the first disc. A good buy, especially if you need something accessible to bring to a party centered around consistently danceable music. I'd probably include this disc along with The Politics of Dancing 2 ~ Paul van Dyk and maybe Emersons GU015: Uruguay. I'm not saying these releases sound alike at all; merely that they could concievably serve the same purpose when proposed for a party; that is, to get people funkified and in the mood to party!

4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2006-09-17

A good exemplification of hard house here. I'm kinda impressed although like another review it reminds me of Sander K, maybe because he was just in my player. Some tracks are borderline tribal with the drums banging, but overall, a hard house album for the pleasant ear. Cool vocal interludes. The second disc displays originality and it blew me off my toes. Especially with the tracks Outrowz "Wrong!" and Sander K's "My lexicon".

Disc 1: 3.5 stars
Disc 2: 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars One of Perfectos best!.......2006-04-19

Damn this is great. After listening to Fabric 20 I decided to get more house music.

Now if this isn't house I don't know what this is but all I know this is some sick $hit!

At first it was kinda crazy cause I was expecting something like Fabric 20 but what I got instead was better.

CD1 is so great on track selection and mixed so great. (After the third time listening to this CD a finally saw the beauty of it. And I was left speechless).

CD2 Damn he starts with a great song in the beginning which grabs your attention and sensation to dance and almost to the whole album he will keep mixing good.(But in the middle it kinda gets boring)

Verdict: 5.0 out of 5.0 This is great and you need to give this album a couple of spins before actually enjoying this. Seb mixes great on. Buy this I loved this one!

3 out of 5 stars has its moments.......2006-02-12

As a whole these cd's are not Seb's best work. But if you like the 'commercial' sound of Oakie then you will love it. He has definately replaced a lot of his regular funk and edge for some atmosphere and POPie baselines. The standouts on cd1 are "Tweakin", and Saeed and Palash's "Champion "which by the way is a bangin track. Cd2's standouts are #4 "wrong" and #5 "Lexicon".

As always Seb's mixing is utterly flawless, i would almost say that all of his cd's are laid out by a computer if i haden't seen him spin personally. Definately has its funky and 'chunky' moments but not often. I know that all artist have to move foreward or get left behind but we have enuf Oakies in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Best DJ Album of 2005.......2005-11-30

Be prepared to warehouse style. This set takes you to so many adventures. Well done Seb, it is been a long time for me that i did not hear a set like this. This album will be around my classics "definitely".

The best album of 2005.

And second place goes to deep dark mix of "Anthony Pappa - Balance 006".
