advertised to the wrong people!.......2007-06-06

the amg review for this had me expecting a shambolic, fun but horrible band. thankfully that's not the case. though the only people reading this will probably own the cd already, it is great.

the problem is it fits way more in line with groups like jesus and mary chain, early my bloody valentine, and outrageous cherry for a more recent name.

it is noise pop with a velvet underground cool, hints of country(lee hazlewood prairie style), and yes a shoegaze sound that i haven't heard mentioned yet. so it's being sold to the wrong people (meat puppets? mudhoney?) find bands i'm sure, but this cd would not sound right to them.

if you like the 3 bands mentioned, even if you don't listen to the shoegaze sound much anymore, it's worth purchasing.

This gets publicity simply b/c of the Nirvana connection.

This is very eccentric, shoegazing, D.I.Y. music. It is so earthy and different that it does have a certain charm to it.

The best songs are "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam" "Son of a Gun" and "You think your a man". This is not on par with any mainstream, professional production work.

The work is precious yet you can only take so much. I wonder what their exposure would have been without the Nirvana unplugged connection.

A little known classic.......2006-06-13

Browsing through the CDs at a local store the other day, I came upon "The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete Anthology" (1992). The name was familiar, if not the music. I had heard of the Vaselines, like a lot of people have, because of course Nirvana has covered a few of their songs on the "Incesticide" (1992) and "MTV Unplugged" (1994) albums. Because (1) Kurt Cobain loved the band and had mentioned them numerous times in various interviews, and (2) the Vaselines are something of indie-pop/rock icons, I decided to check their album out.

I was instantly captivated with just one listen of "The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete Anthology." It's a truly great CD by an underappreciated band that is both instantly addictive and remains enjoyable and intriguing with repeated listens.

Clocking in at slightly less than an hour, there is a surprising amount of diversity to be found on this single disc which encompasses the band's entire body of work. While the Vaselines are sometimes pigeonholed as "indie-pop," their songs range from punk to 60s-esque acoustic/folk, to "indie-pop." At times it sounds as though the band has a strong Donovan influence, but then the album will take a 180 degree turn and show its punk teeth. There is even a little new-wave thrown in the mix with the off-beat "You think you're a man."

The contrasting male/female vocal interplay between singers/founders Eugene Kelly and Frances Mckee works very nicely and is not unlike the style of X, the B-52s, and more recently Lacuna Coil.

Listening to this CD, it's easy to see where Kurt Cobain, Mudhoney, Iron & Wine, and no doubt others found inspiration. While the Vaselines lasted for only a few years (1986-1990) and produced a very small body of work, their talent and influence shouldn't be devalued.

Real weird :-?.......2005-07-15

This band is basically a really weird soft-punk band who get publicity coutesy of Curt Kobain. They're a good band, like someone else said really bored teenagers with some cool ideas. I particularly like the last track, it has a folky but driving beat and a wailing guitar tone. No hope is also a good track and there are some nice 'silly' pop songs, like dum-dum and Oliver twist. Some of the songs are (deliberately) blasphemous, but not many. You can skip 'em over and there's a lot to choose from with 19 songs in total. I also want to give a shout to 'hairy', great song. The vocals are acutally good, too. None of that wailing, affected screeching, just simple folk-singing.

Not the pixies........2005-03-11

Life changing? For me yes. Would you dig it? Hard to say .Many people compare the Vaselines to the Pixies but that's missing the point. They sound like bored Scottish teens with overflowing musical ideas and a tremendous urge to get it out as soon as possible. All the songs on this collection are sleazy, simple and beautiful. Oh and there is a Divine cover. What else do you need a shot of whiskey with that steak. Any one know what happened to Francis?

the first 7" was the best..........2001-12-12

they really never did top it. most of their later work was a lot more slowed down and boring. take, for example, the 'you' lp, which isn't on here but will probably be on volume 2. the first song on each side is classic, the one after it is okay, and the rest is just pretty boring...however, the stuff on here is pretty good, but can be overbearing in its quantity at times.

classic DC HC.......2001-11-29

Classic DC hardcore band , and also the only one next to Bad Brains to stay together spanning nearly 10 years. This anthology collection starts off great with it's catchy hardcore punk tracks , but as it starts getting to the Joyride album it slows down and kinda leaves you bored after awhile. What I really wanna know is like someone else pointed out...wheres the tracks from the Year in Dischord?..THAT'S CLASSIC..they left out "I'm James Dean" and other great songs , and the versions of those songs that are on here were performed alot better on the Year in Dischord album..get it anyway it's still classic hardcore

Goverment Issue - Seminal DC Band.......2001-06-21

Government Issue is the ONLY DC band to stick it out from the begnning to the near end of the seminal DC Hardcore era. They progressed from one album to the next, never losing intensity.

Their earlier stuff is catchy, but look to songs like "they know", and "hear the scream". Both versions of "Blending in" are massive, in all respects.

Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17

In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."

In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.

If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.

If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

The great bulk of Purcell's output consists of what used to be called "incidental" or "theater" music, and what now would be film scores. He wrote songs, dances, and "action" music for scores of Restoration plays and "semi- operas" (spoken plays alternating with operatic scenes and interludes). After his death, the best of the instrumental numbers from many of these scores were gathered together and published in this collection. There is an abundance of tuneful and catchy music here, including the famous melody that Britten used as the basis for The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. The performances are also fine, which is a good thing because, surprisingly, this set is the only show in town. --David Hurwitz

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

holy crap!!!.......2005-02-28

you get all of their later stuff, minus strange wine (unfortunately)!!! it seems when people talk about G.I., they either take the attitude that their later stuff was "boring", or that their early stuff was "immature". these folks all need to put away their respective record collections (whether it's all '83 hardcore or all '90s postpunk or emo) and just listen. admittedly, my favorite album was "the fun just never ends", smack dab in the middle of the two periods, but it really doesn't matter because Stabb was a lyrical genius whether he was lampooning social heirarchy, talking about personal feelings, or being a cynical smartass. musically it is all great stuff, and i don't think they would have taken the direction they did if it hadn't been for the early work, and even if it doesn't show the same "mature" musicianship as say, "you", it still is very powerful, insightful, and funny. as for the critics of later government issue, well, i still listen to hardcore and i am thirty years old, but i don't think that should exclude me from liking something that takes a slightly slicker production than a four track, and slightly more practice and dedication than understanding a few chords. actually, for that matter, there are reams of hardcore bands now that do just that anyway. so even THAT definition of hardcore has become redundant in and of itself.

back in the 80s, when every hardcore band sounded like either the dead kennedys or bad s.o.d. ripoffs, govt issue came along with their 6th lp titled 'you'. it (in my mind at least) single handedly predicted what was to come in the 90s with all the incarnations of emo and indie rock. the next lp ('crash') saw j robbins and peter moffet (who joined for the 'you' album) really add to the the fold, and we all know what they went on to do. (for the unschooled....j robbins went on to form seminal emo outfit jawbox, produce boatloads of recordings from edison, braid, hey mercedes, the stereo and so on.....then formed burning airlines, regrouping with moffet)

'crash' is by far the best offering from this long running and sadly overlooked dc band. it melded elements of the original GI with lots of melody (a'la the ramones), lots of cool guitar and bass counter melodies (a'la the smiths) and just great songs in general. even stabb seemed to really understand his voice and where he could go with it on the album.

volume one of this complete boxed set is a good beginning. this band has lots to offer in the hardcore world, but their strongest material came in the latter day covered by volume 2. in fact, i would highly suggest purchasing this volume over the first on every level.

Anyone remember the "Strange Wine" EP? Good, because you HAVE to remember it, as it's sadly missing from this second installment of the GI discography. That aside, this is truly awe-inspiring music of the highest caliber. "You" and "Crash" were really where GI came into their own. The music is so multilayered, and introspective. It makes more sense than any of their earlier works. With the second history volume you get to hear a totally different side of GI, thanks to the arrival of Pete Moffet, and J Robbins. This a band who was fully realized at the end of their carrer. How many other bands can truly claim to improve with age consistantly? If you like running around in circles slappin your buddies asses, this is the wrong volume of the GI history for you, go old school. If you like your music to move you, step up to the plate. 13 years since their demise and this work still shines every bit as bright. YA-HOO!!
