4 out of 5 stars Talk about a Wise Investment.......2005-02-24

What's there to say about Jazzanova? The Nu-Jazz & broken beat gurus out of Germany, that feature in their own wing of Compost Records titled Jazzanova-Compost - let alone Sonar Kollektiv, and they are some of the most influential musicians in, well, the world IMO. They are well respected and feature great production and originality. The artists they've worked with through the years is stunning. Having said all of that, this is (one) of their remix albums - this one dealing specifically with some of their mixes between 1997-2000. In this one they do the remixing of many artists cuts.

It starts out with the very familiar 4Hero track "We Who Are Not as Others". It has that dropped tone and kicks up int osome beats off the get go. Marshcmellow's also have a cool track titled "Soulpower" with an adequately titled "Jazzanova Straight Dub mix". Other highlight tracks off of disc one were the remake to label mates Truby Trio, with a very interesting take on "Carajillo". UFO and Soul Bossa Trio are also given reworks worthy of a listen. Meanwhile CD2 doesn't slow down and ended up being my favorite. Ursula Rucker has the silky & seductive "Circe" given a quiet and mysterious remix - haunting because of how simple it is. Balanco's "Metti Una Sera A Cena" has a sweet bossa vibe to it - really reminds me of the early days of Schema's Break & Bossa which had... breaks and electronica mixed in, and seemed more creative altogether. Also featured was a great remix by Soul Quality Quartet's "Toda Tersafeira". The cut has a loop to it that hooks you in and admittedly I prefer this remix to the original on their debut album on Irma records titled "Dip".

If you can find this, I'd certainly recommend it. But I don't know about paying $40 for it - but then again when I got this the cd was in several stores I frequented at well below half of that price. Still, you get 20 songs total and none of them are mixed into the other (woo-hoo!). Also be sure not to confuse this with their single disc "Singles 1997-2000" collection, which is available as a very pricey Japanese import. It too is a great cd but really may be of value for collectors. If you dig this, be sure to check out "In Between" and their many other mix projects. You might also be into other Compost artists like Fauna Flash, Truby Trio, Intuit, Beanfield, Wei Chi, Minus-8 (not his last one) and the like. Or... you will probably like Thievery Corporation, Dr Bob Jones, Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge.

5 out of 5 stars Dam Groovy.......2002-07-29

If you don't have this CD and your into this kind of music, you are missing out! This CD is one of my top 10 Favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A Remix Album With a Twist.......2002-07-07

The overwhelming majority of remix albums consist of generic reinterpretations of familiar tunes set to lazy beats and uninspired rhythms. An exception, however, is this remix album from Jazzanova, which compiles the band's greatest work on two discs. The grooves, always rich and multilayred, offer a careful balance of jazz, Latin influences, and a touch of electro beats so as not to scare away even the most conservative jazz gurus. Among the better numbers are Incognito's "Get Into My Groove" and MJ Cole's "Sincere." Whether you want a disc to spice things up at a weekend dinner party or music to relax to on a Sunday afternoon, you'll be pleased with this excellent double-disc set.

5 out of 5 stars Chill music.......2002-06-01

In one word "Smooth". Music that adds atmosphere and class to any occasion

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Nu-Jazz.......2002-05-29

If you're into "chill-out" but with a strong back beet, this comp is for you. THey're influence stems from all kinds of music like jazz, funk, latin, and a smidgen of electronica. The 1st cd is a little better than the 2nd but that is solely preference, I have friends who love the 2nd cd better than the 1st. The cd it wicked chilled out, but has a pretty driving beat so that you never really get boared with it. Everytime I throw a bash and someone new always asks who is this... this is awesome ?!! Definetly buy this comp, with out a doubt the best cd compilation for [the money] I've ever spent :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars cinematically orchestrated.......2004-12-08

This cd has made a broad jump into an arrangement of perfection of previous work. Each track has subtle layers that provide a complex composition. It is clear that these guys have the ability to set the standard in their genre. Which genre is it anyway? In this cd, they are all of it, and it's damn good.

5 out of 5 stars Futuristic jazz........2002-06-08

"Remixes" strikes me as a somewhat misleading title for this CD. Reconstructions, Reconfigurations, Remodels... Maybe one of those titles would have been more fitting. The songs here are all totally reconstructed and only hold a passing resemblance to the originals. Amidst the organic jazzy instrumentation and DJ qualities, samples from the original tracks are integrated for familiarity. All these electronica tracks have now undergone a complete metamorphosis into ambient, jazzy sonic architectures. The effects range from beautiful to atmospheric to haunting. The songs are a heavy supply of downtempo, jazz-inflected electronic psychotropics bound to please many different kinds of listeners. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Minimalistic Perfection.......2001-11-30

Even though most if their music is made electronically there is something very old school and organic about them. Their sound is minimal but by no means empty. Underneath the soft texture of their music you can here many samples and instrument flowing harmoniously. Ther are also very true to their band name..this music could easily be a backgrould score to and cool movi. But the beauty of this particular cd is that this music serves well as background score as well as in your face jazz! There are a few vocal touches here and there but the cd is instrumental for the most part. My favourit track on this cd is the first one. Over this cd is very intecse and cool and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars sad songs, but they still make me feel good.......2001-01-16

This cd consists of 7 remixes by the Cinematic Orchestra, made in the past 3 years. Essential is, that they've ripped the original songs totally apart and recreated them with the shreds, except the fact that the new versions are all very sad ones. So never put this record on when you're feeling down and need to be cheered up! I think it's one of the best remix-cd's you can get, especially 'cause there are some songs on which are pretty hard to get. This is truly an album which shouldn't let anyone unmoved.

The difference between this one and the other Remixes album from 1997-2000 is that this one is the re-issue off the Sonar Kollektiv label - the label they are now currently on.

The remixes 2000 cd demonstrates the signature style of Pizzacato Five but adds twists. Of course, that's why it's a remix. We hear Nomiya maki's clear cute voice go from boppy to blues all in the same album. It's a great cd to listen to from beginning to end. Occasionally its hard to distinguish what language is being spoken, but the music can carry itself even if the words cannot. My favorites would have to be track 1 - the groove room suite, and track 4 - one, two, ... The album is a little short.

1 out of 5 stars A classic dance tune trashed with this "remix.".......2000-04-29

It is a sad state of affairs indeed when one of the hottest current dance singles is nothing more than a remix of a sixteen-year old song. This just goes to illustrate my contention that the state of current dance music is so pathetic that many would rather rehash old material than listen to the new garbage that is now being peddled as the latest craze. Where are the artists today producing quality dance music(which has been on a downhill plummet into the gutter since the late 80s, with very few exceptions)? Robotic, industrial "house" and "techno" are lifeless and mind-numbing, devoid of humanity, as Madonna has put it, with reference to her brilliant "Ray of Light", and the pains she took to infuse techno with some soul. Do yourself a favor if you like this song, and get the initial recording. This remix destroys the flow and the emotional intensity of the original version.

"Give Me Tonight 2000" is one of the hottest remixes of the moment. Hex Hector takes this freestyle track from 1984 and kicks it into 2000 with some hard beats and fantastic breaks. Shannon's vocals are fantastic as are Jimi Tunnell's as the "boyfriend" in the song. You get 5 different versions of the song, not one as is listed on Amazon. You get these versions:

        1) Hex Hector 2000 AD Radio Edit - 3:43

        2) Hex Hector 2000 AD Club Mix - 10:33

        3) Hex Hector 2000 AD Dub Mix - 8:08

        4) Hex Hector 2000 AD Accapella - 3:20

        5) Classic Mix - 3:53

The best track on this disc is the Club Mix, 10 minutes of pure heaven. The dub has the same great beats and build ups, but alot less vocals, which is kind of a downfall. And the radio edit is good as well, but is too short to give this song the build-up that it deserves. If you are a fan of dance divas with "tragic songs" ("Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" by Deborah Cox, "Un-Break My Heart" by Toni Braxton or "The One I Gave My Heart To" by Aaliyah) you need to pick this one up quickly.

        5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT MATCH FOR A PERFECT MIX!.......2000-04-13

Whoever gave this song to Hex Hector to remix has to be congradulated on a musical insight. Hex Hector, known to cook up a dark and beat heavy groove(Deborah Cox: Things Just Ain't The Same, EBTG: Tempermental, and Whitney Houston: I Learned From The Best just to name some) does just that for this ultimate 1984 dance classic. Though Hector "updates" this song's musical sound, he deviates NOT ONE BIT from the original dark and ominous feel of the song. I believe that if Shannon were making this song for the first time in history, she would have made it just like this. This version has every bit the energy as the 1984 version. It is as though Hex Hector could have got into a time machine and went back to that wonderful year and produced it from the ground up with Shannon. Let us not loose sight of Shannon in these days of remix madness. Shannon has a great voice that belongs to the dance world. I hope that is where she decides to stay now that she has wandered into the corporate world of "quickie hits" and "quickie careers" that have no longevity.

4 out of 5 stars Shannon Shines Once Again.......2000-03-25

The Hex Hector remixes are a fine update to the original tune. They have a nice slow build and bring out Shannon's vocals. If anything, the the Hex Hector remixes are a little spare in the orchestration department (I think there are too many moments when the song fades out and comes back), and if I were remixing I think I would have played more with Shannon's vocals - but like the original the beats are strong. The classic mix (the final track) I had thought would be the extended/album version from '84, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it has been subtly and successfully tweaked; the result being what sounds like a record from this year beautifully crafted to sound like old school freestyle. Shannon still rules, and I can't wait to hear her upcoming "Best Is Yet To Come" greatest hits album.

        5 out of 5 stars Superb Remix!.......2000-03-23

This is one of the best remixes I have ever heard. Hex Hector with a little help from the creator of the classic, Chris Barbosa, has truly brought this song into the next millenium. Shannon sounds just as great as she did 16 years ago and of course the song would not be complete without the irreplaceable vocals of Jimi Tunnell!!

the original was so catchy, that remixing it (i thought) would only kill it; IN ACTUALITY, the remixes carry 'greece 2000' higher and further, as all of them make a sincere impact on the music scene. i've been in a radio and live dj for almost 2 years now, and this is one trance song that will forever be in my repertoire. get it in yours, too! you won't regret it.
