Album Description

Magna Carta has joined forces with Modern Drummer Magazine to present some of the world's greatest contemporary drummers and has given them each the opportunity to showcase their extraordinary talents. Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes), Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto) are just a few of the world-class drummers performing on "DRUM NATION". Some of the artists perform with their touring groups, some with session players. Others chose to play all the instruments themselves. But each of the exclusive performances on "DRUM NATION" is world class and can be appreciated by anyone who loves virtuoso musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Drumming CD.......2005-01-20

It took me a while to pick this one up, but I'm glad I did. All of the tracks are worthy to be on this collection. There is a diverse grouping of drummers so the listener won't be dissapointed. Vets like Steve Smith, Simon Phillips, Rod Morganstein, Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio all shine. Other drummers like Stanton Moore, Chad Wackerman, Josh Freese, etc. all have contributed great tracks as well. This is a great compilation, and I look forward to the next.

5 out of 5 stars VOLUME 1, BRING ON VOLUME 2.......2004-08-31

Being a drummer, this little gem caught my eye a couple of weeks ago while out shopping. I spied it again a week later and just had to have it. Being familiar with over half of the 14 featured drummers, I figured I'd like at least half of this CD's 12 tracks. How wrong I was. Every time I listen to it I find a different cut that prompts me to hit replay. I can't wait for Volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars From a drummers point of view..........2004-01-22

I found this on a fluke! I own a CD called burning for Buddy, which has a lot of these same players. The only exception is they are playing Buddy Rich charts with his orchestra. This disc contains original songs by these drummers with there own band. I'm 51 and grew up basically with Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich; great drummers in thier own right. But, I must say these drummers will and do blow Rich and Krupa away. A must for any drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warren G's status as something like a camp follower of his pal Snoop Dogg is ironic in the light of I Want It All, a much better disc than Snoop's own recent, flimsy No Limit releases. Want gets across more on agreeably familiar-sounding Long Beach-style tracks and smart wordplay than on the storytelling that made Warren G's best-known track, "Regulate," such a standout. Still, who can really dislike a gangsta whose idea of luxury includes not only Benzes and champagne but "brand new socks and drawers"? While it would be interesting to hear Warren lay down rhymes with a little more substance than his boasts of being connected with the Doggfather, it's also refreshing to hear a tough guy who's more into laying back and partying than looking for someone to fill with bullets. Of such small favors are listenable rap albums sometimes made these days; the groovewise I Want It All is certainly one to keep in rotation. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Warren's 2nd Best Album.......2006-07-24

Warren G's 3rd effort, "I Want It All," was released in the hopes that it would be better received than Take A Look Over Your Shoulder. While the latter album is more consistent throughout, with no unlistenable songs, I Want It All still gets a slightly better rating because the classics and near-classics are all but flawless. In addition, Warren calls on all his west coast homies for this one. With Daz and Kurupt, Nate Dogg, RBX, Snoop, Mack 10 and even Slick Rick making an appearance, Warren's limited lyrical ability is completely overshadowed. By the end, all you remember is the fantastic production skills of one of the west's bests. An extremely minimalistic album--"I want it all, fast cars, diamond rings, champaigne..."--the beats are straight g funk, laid-back and smooth. The album sports 2 classics, 3 near classics and 1 decent song. The rest is disappointing unlistenable filler.

The first classic is "I Want it All." Featuring west coast reliable Mack 10, the song has very easy lyrics, a fantastic set of horns and a nice bassline. This is my 4th favorite Warren G song behind Regulate, This DJ and Transformers. "Dollars Makes Sense" is an interesting one. A classic in my opinion, with a misleadingly hard beat and delivery. I say misleading because you can count the number of curses. At one point, Warren really messes with us: "Hittin switches and we checkin all snitches. Gettin all riches, and flossin in our pictures" You'd expect the easy rhyme from a lesser artist, but once again Warren defines gangsta rap on his own terms. Crucial Conflict sounds nice trading verses with Warren, kind of like how Pac and Outlawz did for some time.

On to the near classics. "Why Oh Why" featuring Tha Dogg Pound. You know Daz is in the house when you hear that knocking sound. Gangsta Love is a laid-back one with old reliable Nate Dogg crooning his way to another hit. The closest one to the classic, featuring one of Warren's smoothest beats ever is If We Give You A Chance. Val Young, the best female crooner of the g funk era, starts out the song, followed by a verse by Slick, Warren G and then Phats Bossi. Bossi's harder delivery takes away from the smooth sample taken from "Music is My Sanctuary." Nonetheless, it's a great song. Although the East Coast/West Coast feud was dying down by 1999, I like how Warren G tries to unite two coasts with Slick Rick by his side, traveling from LAX to JFK, giving respects to the two cities that continue to define hip hop.

The rest of the songs aren't worth mentioning. World Wide Ryders and Game Don't Wait (very disappointing 213 reunion) are okay, but after that everything's a mess. It's a shame, because Warren dedicates one song to his mom, Ola Mae. But the production on that one, and the rest, makes the song horrible. All in all though, especially because of the touches that the Regulator adds to otherwise minimalistic topics, another great album. 4.5

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars.......2005-11-30

This should have been called Regulate pt 2 because Warren G satisfies me again with the Brilliant beats and this song Dope Beat and some others you want it for its smooth beats and Warren smooth voice get this

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 star 3rd effort.......2004-11-05

After another 2 and a half year hiatus Warren returns with another solid cd. Just as good as his previous two, although this one heavily features other artists (only 2 songs don't have someone on them). The Production is, as always on his albums, tight and the beats are great through thewhole album. Warren does 11 of the 14 songs, Soopafly does 1, and Vada Nobles does 2. Has 1 classic, 3 average songs and the rest are good or great. I'd definitely recommend it for any G-Funk fan.

4 out of 5 stars Warren G- I Want It All.......2003-08-28

Warren G's (Warren Griffin III) 3rd album "I Want It All" (1999) marks the return of a creative Rapper/Producer who is best known for his debut album the triple platinum "Regulate...G Funk Era". Coming across this album was a nice surprise, I had missed his 2nd album and really not heard anything new from Warren G in five years. This release runs in at 16 tracks (including intro/outro and a remix) and is executive produced by Warren G. Guest appearances are numerous and come from: Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Nate Dogg, RBX, Crucial Conflict, Mack 10, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg, Phats Bossi, Reel Tight, El Debarge, Val Young, Eve, Drag-on, Shadow, Neb Love, K-Bar, Slick Rick, Memphis Bleek & Tikki Diamond. Warren G looks after the majority of the production on this album(13/16 tracks), while Priest does "My Mamma (Ola Mae)", and Vada Nables does "We Got That" and "I Want It All (Remix). After a short intro the album starts with "Gangsta Love" feat. Kurupt, Nate Dogg & RBX, a track laced with a laid back beat, some nice verses, and a tight chorus by Nate Dogg. "Why Oh Why" feat. Daz & Kurupt flows well and is followed up by the standout "Dollars Make Sense" feat. Kurupt & Crucial Conflict. Warren G & Mack drop a g-funk collabration to remember on the albums lead single/title track. "Havin' Things" feat. J. Dupri and Nate Dogg, flows nicely, though in my opinion there was no need to add J. Dupri on it. "You Never Know" feat. Snoop Dogg, Phats Bossi, Reel Tight is about death & living life to the fullest, Snoops appearance is a good one, Warren shines, and I really like the outstanding soulful background R & B chorus. Warren G drops a deep dedication track with "My Momma" (Ola Mae) a track for his mums who passed away. "G-Spot" feat. El Debarge and Val Young is a nice Rap/R&B collab about the ladies. Ruff Ryders Eve & Drag-on as well as Shadow drop in for "We Got That" and though the track is not bad it seems a bit misplaced for this album, guess its about Warren G showing love for the East Coast. Warren G goe solo on "Dope Beat" a track where he talks about the game and mentions other MC's like Jay-Z. Relaxed "World Wide Ryders" feat. Neb Love & K-Bar of 5 Footaz runs smoothly. Warren goes back to his roots uniting with 213 members Snoop and Nate on "Game Don't Wait" a track that makes me look forward to there 213 album which is supposed to be dropping sometime in the next year. Oldschool UK rapper Slick Rick makes a nice appearance on "If We Give You a Chance". I thought Vada Nobles produced "I Want It All" (Remix) feat. Memphis Bleek, Drag-On & Tikki Diamond, was going to be a filler track instead it turned out to be a decent closing joint. Warren G's "I Want It All" has got an upbeat relaxed vibe all throughout, lots of good guest appearances and some tight production making it a album to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-04-03

Warren G does it again. With his hiphop jazz fusions he has managed to make another album. With beats similiar to that of the first and second, it can help but to be a layed back knock out.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF UNDERGROUND SOUL.......2003-02-28

MOST OF THE SONGS AND ARTISTS ON SESSIONS WILL NEVER BE HEARD ON MAINSTREAM R/B STATIONS. WHICH IS PROBABLY THE MAIN REASON I PURCHASED THIS CD. IM FAMILIAR WITH ABOUT 5 OF THE ARTIST ON HERE , ULTRA NATE PROBABLY BEING MY FAVORITE. HER SONG TWISTED FROM HER LAST CD IS HERE IT'S LAID BACK JAZZ TRACK WITH HER HUSH VOCALS IS ENOUGH TO PUT ANYONE IN THE MOOD. N'DAMBI AND SEEK DELIVER THE OTHER 2 STAND OUT TRACKS WITH MAD HOUSE FLAVOR. THIS IS GREAT SOUL/DANCE MUSIC AT ITS BEST. NO TRACK IS WORTH SKIPPING OVER.

5 out of 5 stars A renaissance of soul music and spoken word..........2002-12-17

Giant Step Records has long been on the vanguard of burgeoning soul. "Soul Sessions" is no exception. A truly novel recording, "'Sessions" unites a wide range of talent under one musical umbrella. Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Jody Watley, Ultra Naté and Donnie are just some of the artists featured here.

Sonically, the collection is an enticing mix of soul, jazz and electronica. Funk and soul exist alongside chillout and drums 'n bass tracks quite appealingly.

Ultra Naté's "Twisted" and Jody Watley's "Saturday Night Experience" are both jazzy excursions into chillout territory, whereas Donnie's "Our New National Anthem" is more consistent with traditional soul; Herbie Hancock featuring Chaka Khan's "The Essence" gets a drums n' bass reworking by Joe Claussell, and Seek's "Ever After" is allusive to disco.

This is a brilliant collection with absolutely no filler. In addition to the tracks already mentioned, standouts include Carl Hancock Rux's "Ground", Imani Uzuri's "Again" and Shawn Lee's "Happiness".

"Soul Sessions" is a brilliantly conceived and executed experiment that not only reaffirms, but redefines the definition of soul.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2002-09-25

I can't understand why adult contemporary radio stations never play music like this. Despite of a couple of skippable songs, this is one of the best compilation CDs I own. The highlights would be (my favorite)"In a Heartbeat", "Twisted" and "Future Love" and the disco flavored "Again".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Compilations of the Year.......2002-07-05

The influential label Giant Steps digs deep and compiles slammin' jams that have passed radio's radar screen on the lush "Soul Sessions." While modern r&b collections grow repulsively trendy, this album offers slammin soulful grooves from names that may be familiar to the average Joe Schmo as well as other tracks from lesser-known artists. Standouts include the mellowed out jazz of Ultra Nate in "Twisted," as well as Jody Watley's "Saturday Night Experience," a welcome diversion from her dance pop of the 1980s. My favorite track is the funkified "Our New National Anthem" by Donnie. All in all, this is a groovilicious collection that should appeal to soul snobs and casual listeners alike.

4 out of 5 stars Giant Step Records continues to drop gems.......2002-06-03

The assiduous efforts of Giant Step Records payed off with this release of soulful gems. Underground music just gets better and better with record companies like GiantStep. Mainstream misses out again.........in to be honest, I don't care because I don't give radio much time in my home or car. The dulcet vibe of this entire CD is something to cherish in anybodys soul collection, dance collection or just an underground enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Strong album from Good Looking Records.......2004-03-03

I've been to a few places in Chicago where this music would have fit right in with the laid back, groove-appreciating attitude of the crowd. A kind of modern and progressive jazz feel permeates throughout the tracks. A jazz album this is not in the traditional sense. I hear Funk, Jazz, a little Soul, a little R&B. This album is definitely worth actually listening to. It is relaxing yet upbeat. If you are familiar with LTJ Bukem's Journey Inwards, this compliments its style well. Both are off the same label. Expect to hear vocal samples and sound bytes, some solid beats, a few traditional jazz instruments, and synthesized sounds mixed together on these tracks. I would not rate it as an outstanding CD, but it is definitely worth listening to and will not leave you feeling untouched by the music, as I find myself occasionally playing these tracks through in my mind.

4 out of 5 stars If you have to choose..........2001-09-09

between Ingredients 1 and 2, go for the second installment of this new series from producer and dj LTJ Bukem. While both compilations feature tracks by the same stable of dj's, Ingredients 2 is slightly more chilled down and interesting - these tunes flirt heavily with the structure and range of instrumental acid jazz and seem less sterile and processed as a result. Ingredients 1 is what you'd put on as background muzak when your friends come over for cocktails; Ingredients 2 is what you'd actually listen to on your headphones. Neither record is particularly groundbreaking but since that evidently wasn't the goal when they were made, I'm not complaining. Oh, and good cover art, no?

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic collaboration of funk- based jungle music.......1999-09-05

This is jungle sky is a wonderfully intruiging title for a ground breaking, mezmerizing, not to mention irrisistably groove splitting album. The music is extremely progressive and pioneering, but the funky beats rival those of funk fore fathers such as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, or Earth Wind and Fire. Obviously, I reccoment this album to all.

The latest Matthew Shipp- William Parker collaboration... no drummer. All beats electronic, generated by Brooklyn production duo Danny Blume and Chris Kelly, who relax into patterns that leave room for Parker to bend his bass toward an equivalent of the body groove that jazz folk associate with swing. Only this groove doesn't swing-it's more like techno that realized acid jazz was garbage and went back home to mama. Shipp riffs, hooks, and decorates, leaving theme and cognitively dissonant variation to name trumpeter Roy Campbell and two trombonists. Not deep, not intense.

5 out of 5 stars really good.......2006-08-16

A great studio work.
They really used the studio abilities to make something unique.
A cool and funky sound.
Listening to this one, you'll understand the evolution between linving colour's "stain" and "collideoscope".

Just great !!!

5 out of 5 stars Cool and groovy.......2006-06-08

This album was completely unexpected. I am not familiar with VinX's work, but very familiar with Living Colour. The album slides and grooves through the funky Wimbish bass and Calhoun drums with very soulful VinX vox over the top. It is truly one of those "albums to make love to".

If you like drums, bass and soulful funk and electronic sounds, this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2006-04-09

If three artists, all experienced members of the Jazz, Rock, Funk & Electronic music scenes, were ever to come together for one night and record an album live Jungle Funk is as a good a representation as any. Vinx, Doug Wimbish & Will Calhoun joined forces April 12-14 back in 1998 to create music that is just that: MUSIC. This can not be classified or categorized. It is an amalgamation of every genre these men have ever worked with or been influenced by throughout their lives. Bringing a unique combination of Drums, Guitars, Samplers, Synthesizers & their own vocals Jungle Funk is funk for the party in the Jungle. Whether you are looking to lay back and chill with some instrumental jams, vibe out to a laid back soul number, or get your freak on on the dance floor this album has it all. With no set pattern these three men combine their musical genius to create something that I doubt could ever be done again. Overall an experience on record that can transport you to wherever you want to be and bring you back in one piece; leaving you feeling a sense of awe like you have just seen the future and the past all in one.

5 out of 5 stars §A$SY! (pretty good!).......1999-05-15

I think this CD is really cool! um.... it just has that beat to go with it. I like the first song the best. I guess that's it.... i am glad that they came out with this CD!

5 out of 5 stars They rock the house!.......1999-04-23

Hiyouare! I saw them in the concert in the Riga city. They're big! Doug Wimbish is most amazing bass player in the world, definetely. So, I don't know how the whole album sounds like, but I heard those samples and remembered the concert feeling in the same moment.. I'll definetely get this record. Promise...

    Album Description

The long awaited release by Screaming Headless Torsos is a powerful mélange of the incredibly funky and original jazz-rock that made their name as "Musicians' Musicians" - fantastically played, but totally burning. Not afraid to rock out, Torsos combine their soul, rock and jazz in exceptionally brilliant and unique ways. Screaming Headless Torsos is the brainchild of mad-scientist guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, and began in 1984 as a punk-funk-reggae-opera band. In 1990 they added vocalist extraordinaire Dean Bowman and began their original take on avant-funk rock. The Torsos exceptionally high energy and virtuosic musicianship inspired fans, other musicians, and numbers of cover bands all over the world, becoming a cult phenomena with their first CD "1995" (released originally on Warner-Discovery Records). Their 1996 "Live!!" CD further proved their incredible ability and creativity and has been chosen repeatedly for "Best of All Time" lists from prominent publications worldwide. The band's newest effort, "2005" is their ten year celebration of the unique musical chemistry of their iconoclastic and sometimes wacky artistry. The musicians of the Torsos are all incredible players in their own right, who have collectively played with many of the biggest names in the pop and jazz worlds. Bassist Fima Ephron is the big bottom of the group, with a fluid and fat sound that grounds the highly percussive music. Percussionist Daniel Sadownick, the "secret weapon" of the band, using everything from squeezy toys to burning congas, powers the whole band with his passionate playing. Star drummer Gene Lake is simply one of the best drummers playing today, with extreme chops and supremely funky pocket. With special guest vocals by soul-rock vocalist Freedom Bremner.

    4 out of 5 stars blissful entries..........2002-01-02

another good looking records compilation from sub-label "cookin' records." absolute soul, elemental jazz, and downtempo grooves. a collection hand selected by the man who can- ltj bukem. this is the first of 3 current releases. showcasing the talents of other producers and artists that have contributed to the development of the good looking organization. it is not drum n bass... it is not completely downtempo... but the brilliance lies in the artistry of not being able to classify this style or genre. it's quality expected and quality delivered. the ingredients series showcases the 12" vinyl releases that have come out since the cookin' inception. there are now three different ingredients releases and each one smoother and tighter than the previous. notable releases you should also check out to complete the vibe are cookin' records releases of 'soul food' (1999) and 'soul addiction' (2001). you will not be disappointed. if you look to lounge and set the mood to create memories and moments... the ingredients series sets to break the ice...

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not smooth or consistent.......2001-07-17

A fair compilation, it's being marketed as a "collection of laid back grooves". Well, when I think of laid-back grooves, I think of stuff I can just really chill out on the couch with, not dance to, and most of this record breaks that rule for me. I do so hate false advertising.

In any event, it's not a bad compilation. It's got a heavy jazz-influence, so if you're not into the whole acid jazz/fusion vibe, this is not the record for you. Don't let the fact that LTJ Bukem put it together fool you: there's not a house, d'n'bass or jungle track on here. It's lounge music, not lounging music; not the stuff he does, but definitely the stuff where he derives his tone (and samples) from.

Some of it is exactly what I was looking for from a "laid-back compilation (#3, #6), however, for the record: "laid-back" does not mean "use acoustic-sounding instrumentation to get jazzy feel". A dance track (#1, 2, 4, 9) is still a dance track. At at a mere 9 cuts, I feel a little robbed.

Grooverider isn't hailed as the "don of drum & bass" for nothing. It's an honorable title that he has earned and held since the genre's very foundation in the early 1990s. Mysteries of Funk, surprisingly Groove's first full-length, is a sample of jazzier and more tech-step-oriented strains of drum & bass. Taking slightly forced, Björk-esque vocal arrangements and beautiful guitar licks and arranging them around soft, café-style breakbeats, "Rainbow of Color" emphasizes the jazz-funk solution to Groove's great mystery. "On the Double" takes the fusion of sound even more literally and exercises a more soundtrackish approach with a film chase-scene sound. The mighty Grooverider later flees the café scene with a handful of strictly main-floor tracks like "Where's Jack the Ripper?" and "560." The former takes crunchy bass quacks and pounds against them with a metallic snare drum; the latter takes quirky sub-bass pulses that are quickly recycled into heavy reverb while a simple conga rhythm accents each beat. Groovy. --Daniel Shumate

    5 out of 5 stars a true journey.......2007-06-25

I'm not a big DNB fan, but this album is incredible. It is a mood of its own; it has a unified vision. It takes you to the darkest reaches of outer space with the sound of mournful metallic whale calls and random snippets of radio relays from a distant space station - but it stays totally coherent with beats that switch from supple to smashing and then back again. A real piece of art.

5 out of 5 stars My first DNB cd WAY BACK WHEN.......2006-04-10

From when I got it in 99 its been a passion for me to be involved with DNB, 7 years ago, wow, But yeh Super Techy it stays a same a lot but very interesting songs with a couple that have superb breakdowns that made me fall in love. I have followed grooverider and goldie and now tons of artist becuase of this cd, even on the market today, it still is a somewhat strange original cd, and it has very dark spacey origins, with a twist of nice groovey origins. Great cd, my first love.......and for the used price its worth it to hear it in full length...

5 out of 5 stars get this double disc version.......2005-12-17

i bought the single disc version when it came out in '98 or '99 but didn't get it back after a breakup. i saw the double disc and thought i should get this one instead because it had two extra tracks. what i didn't know was the the order of songs was switched and in most cases extended. i am blown away! this is so much better than the single i can't believe it, i would even recommend buying the double if you already own the single. the packaging is great which shows me this is the version grooverider wants you to have. do yourself a favour and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Drum + Bass pioneer does well..........2004-09-22

I'm not a huge fan of drum and bass, but I am an obsessed music lover, and no matter what the genre a song is in, if its good, I'll listen. I've always heard of Grooverider and seen him on countless U.K. festival flyers, and decided to see what the fuss was all about. On Mysteries of Funk, Grooverider takes a very jazzy and lounge-inspired approach. Dancefloor destroyers "Rivers of Congo" and "Where's Jack the Ripper" roll along next to smoother, jazzier cuts such as "Imagination" the beautiful "Rainbows of Color". Emotive chords and clangy guitars phase in and out along extremely tight drum programming and crisp effects. The mastering is excellent, and the album comes through the speaker very clear and effortlessly. The whole album gives the listener a decent listen, and is essential for any newcomer to the drum and bass / jungle genre, as the excellent price and quality factor keep this album stocked in any decent music shop.

5 out of 5 stars the best in the genre.......2004-04-29

This album is the best example of what drum n' bass should sound like. This is why Grooverider is the best. Fork out the money and get this double disc limited edition. I got mine in France. You will not be dissappointed.
