As a beginning ballroom dancer, I was happy with this album, with samples of lots of different types of songs, with easy-to-follow beats. I would recommend it for some of the more basic ballroom dances -- waltz, tango, foxtrot. The songs are a little boring, but that's okay, because the point for me was just to provide some variety in backdrop music as I'm trying to learn the steps.

Lots of good instrumental dance music at a very reasonable price. This is full orchestra dance music and the strings often carry the melody line. The beat, provided by plucked bass or bass guitar, is easy to hear. The cover lists the appropriate dance and the tempo (bpm). The tempos are appropriate to the suggested dance, with the exception of tracks 23, 24, and 25. I suggest foxtrot for tracks 23 and 24. Track 25 works with West Coast Swing. Oh, and track 14 (Liebesträume) has some slightly sour strings.

I DJ for Social Ballroom dancing here in Peterborough Ontario and am always on the lookout for new music. This and the other Columbia Ballroom Orchestra CDs that I have just received (5 in number) are superb. The music is in strict tempo for dancing and the songs are ones that all my dancers can relate to and sing along with. I just hope there are more Columbia Ballroom Orchestra CDs around that I can get my hands on.

This CD is professionally recorded and very enjoyable to listen to. It's perfect to practice your dancing skills. The music is grouped in 3 or 4 of the same dance so that you can practice a particular type of dance several times in a row. I highly recommend this CD, along with Let's Dance - Latin Collection(see review).

This is a decent album for dance practice and easy listening. The tempos are appropriate to the suggested dance The waltzes are Viennese tempo (58-60 mpm). There are no slow waltzes here. They must think "New York" is the most boring city on earth. No pep here at all. "Over the rainbow" is played as a cha cha, and it doesn't really work for me.

        Marc Fortier is the brains behind this complicated and surprising collection of dance tunes. He is well known as artistic director and conductor for the Montreal Pop Orchestra (1979-1985) and as conductor and arranger for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra 's Pops Series 1989-91. He conducted the Montreal Summer Concerts for more than 30 years (1968-2001). This disc from 1993 has a very bright sound. It is lively, complicated, and often as tight as a good jazz recording. Not every piece is successful in making me want to dance, but I was compelled to listen straight through.

        The first two pieces work for jive and rumba. The "Bluse Cat" is a playful spoof of Henri Mancini's "Pink Panther." It doesn't make me want to foxtrot. Tracks 4 and 13 work for samba. "In old Paris" is a beautiful Cajun/Zydeco sounding waltz, and probably clocks about 44 BPM. Clear the floor and prepare to move! "La Tranca" works with mambo. Track 7 sounds like a bossa nova, but a smooth samba would also work. "Tangomania" is danceable and playful for tango. "Quick Toes" as a quickstep and "Casa Marco" as cha cha are not as much fun. "Arena" is paso doble and it makes me want to "get in the ring." "Monica" works as a foxtrot, and "the Midnight waltz" is gorgeous. Here are the titles, duration, and my suggestions for dancing:
