5 out of 5 stars And Now That It's 13 Years Later ..........2007-04-04

... after the first printing of this collection, let me say LOUD and CLEAR that WaxTrax! (now TVT) Records NEEDS TO RE-RELEASE THIS COLLECTION OF CLASSICS!!! As it stands, Black Box is a hard to find collector's item, as the prices for used copies can attest (nobody's gonna have a new one available, kids, at least not for a reasonable price). You're lucky if you can find someone who kept immaculate, anal-retentive care of the discs. I was lucky to find a copy of this set at my local record shop, but the condition of the CDs would rate as GOOD, VERY GOOD at best. I'm just glad that after 13 years, they will still play in my CD player.

I'm not going to fire off a huge, elaborate critique of the set. If this kind of music from this time period pushes the dopamine receptors in your brain over the brink (and you know who you are), then this collection is for you. Yeah, it's primarily industrial in nature, but there are hints of techno, hard/goth rock, and dark experimental music. The 3-CD set clocking in at roughly 3 1/2 hours of music represents a nice, thick, bloody slice of a time and a place, and yes, it's just that damn good. Read the other reviews for point by point details. At worst, this one gets 4.5 stars. At best, it easily garners 5.

5 out of 5 stars Wow....just wow.......2006-11-27

My interest in industrial music and its history lead me down the path to this little almost forgetten jem at this point.
This is industrial music as its not made anymore, as industrial music since the death of this label has become even more of a minor niche market fading into the obscure. But this box set captures industrial's golden age. An interesting mix of styles and history, it actually prompted to go visit the orginal WaxTrax store in Denver while on vacation(ironicly seeing one of the artists on the boxset.KMFDM). With all the music revials going on, I wish someone would revive this kind of industrial music, before its completely forgotten. The track that is the most well known is probably the cover of "Supernaut" with the Trent Renzor vocals, but that is to over look alot of other amazing material. You can feel the energy, the thoughtfulness, and the pioneering spirit racing though every track. The only shortcoming i'd say would be that Front 242's material couldn't be included.
Music history buffs will also get a kick out of this, there is a little booklet helping outline the history of the label, and quite a history it is. I find it quite sad that there is no real written books about WaxTrax and the chicago industrial scene of the 80s like there is for punk, hardcore, indie and their counterparts.
I recommend this comp 100%, and hope that you can feel the same love for this music as I do.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this collection 18 stars.......2002-11-04

I dj'd at college radio stations for 5 years in the late '80s, and was always pleasantly excited when I found a Wax Trax! label in the New bin. (Unfortunately, I usually did my shows in the dark and thought the name was "Wax Traxi" for the longest time!) The label was a mainstay of industrial music, and founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher consistently managed to sign and produce the most exciting musicians of the time -- the many incarnations of dear troubled genius Al Jourgensen, The Young Gods, FLA, Coil, Controlled Bleeding, Doubting Thomas, A Split Second, Lead Into Gold, Psychic TV, Foetus -- they are all here on three great discs packed with music that makes you want to move and feel. Disc One, Track One: Trent Reznor covers Black Sabbath's 'Supernaut' with 1000 Homo DJs -- a version previously unreleased, and then you are zipping through Sister Machine Gun and The Young Gods and oh so many more seminal industrial bands. Divine puts the "fun" in funky with "The Name Game", the label's second release. I was also happy to hear a few groups that had somehow slipped past me the first time around, like Wreck. I had a great time listening to this collection and am still listening to it. You can put in any of the three discs and be happy for a long time.

The packaging is beautiful -- a heavyweight black box covered with hip lettering and disturbing images; three black CD cases containing labeled discs and a listing with artist, cut, time and version information; and a terrific booklet that relates the anecdotal history of Wax Trax! -- it's artistically interesting as well as substantive and entertaining.

If you enjoy industrial music, you cannot go wrong with this incredible collection of the music and people that started it all. And why not put a few bucks into the pockets of the guys who loved the music more than the profits?

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money!.......2002-02-28

This Chicago-based record label compilation is an awesome chunk of the work done by most of the best industrial bands that came out of N. America and Europe in the 80s. Very interesting and innovative music- fans of industrial music or darker techno should like most of this stuff quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars A wee handbook for the perplexed.......2000-11-25

This 3 CD set offers an excellent overview of the artists that made WaxTrax! Records synonymous with beautiful, challenging music. Coil, Thrill Kill Kult, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, KMFDM, Pig, RevCo, even some early Frontline Assembly is featured on this Box. And for you NIN fans, there's even the original version of 1,000 Homo DJs' 'Supernaut' with Trent Reznor on vox. The enclosed booklet encapsulates the WT! history, including the TVT buyout. Overall, a great mix of music and information about the early days in Chicago that is well worth the price.

I'm from Chicago.....This album is very good old school, from Mendel, IIT, Chicago State, wharehouse. The person who gave it less is too young to understand....You don't buy this CD to spinn or mix....Its for Jackin.....Also it states all over the CD, mixed by BLAU,BLAU....just take the time and READ....... I am a dj from the chicago area and i am faithfully seeking all old school chicago house music. As all real dj's know, you can't use a cd that has already been mixed by another dj. When I purchased Trax 20th anniversary cd there was no indication that the tracks listed were already mixed. This cd is totally useless to me. There should be some sort of indication letting the consumer know if the track listing is mixed or individual tracks.

4 out of 5 stars I give you acid..........2005-01-19

wow... I read about this in some mag. I first heard this while I was kinda coming outta my 'goth/ alternative' stage ~1988. I bought this cassette called House Hallucinates @ Rainbow Records (a chain that is now all out of biz I think). Anyways, there were these tracks on there that was a sound I had never heard before. I played that tape hundreds of times blasting out of my silver 16v Scirocco. :) So anyways... flash forward to like 1990 or so and we're at Bonnie Dune beach in Santa Cruz for Wicked's full moon parties with SF djs Garth, Jeno, Markie and Thomas just blowing minds. But I'm outta my gourd and a couple of these songs on this compilation come on and just like take me over the top. Well, some naked guy then jumped into a camp fire and the cops don't bust the thousands of people dancing under a beautiful summer sky but ticket everyone's car... but a handful. mine included... Anyways, AcidHouse was just so raw. This compilation/ label (Trax)/ sound/ etc just completely got me hyped on the whole thing and now like 15 years later still doing the do. I bought myself a TB-303, SH-101 and all that. Here's to the infinite beat...

5 out of 5 stars where it all begins.......2004-09-25

i first heard about this release in xlr8r, which was quite surprising since i was reading it at a studio run by vince lawrence, creator of one of the first (THE first, according to screamin' rachel) house tracks. he didn't go on to be a big name, but his track ('phantasy') is great. what makes this release so powerful, though, is that this is one of the lesser tracks on the three discs. not only that, the mix job on the first two is brilliant, carrying you from one track tot he next without any break in momentum. if you like house, or you ever wanted to know what it is, this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars the birth of house music!x real.......2004-08-06

Well, I think everybody got to have this compilation..Trax it's the History of house, here are the sounds of the wind city, the 3rd millenium blues, here are the most beatiful spacey melodies you can hear, here is the beginning and the future of Music. The artists and the tracks here included are absolutely classics for every listener, try and enjoy it!

I got this disc for one song, the uncut, full length version of "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind and Fire (with the Emotions). The rest of the disc is good - but "Boogie Wonderlan" is in a class by itself!! Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Chicago House.......2006-07-24

I wanted to reinforce that this is an excellent compilation of early Chicago House. Anyone who dismisses this compilation just doesn't know what they're talking about.

This compilation is a great way to acquire many of the classic Chicago tracks from the Trax label in one swoop, including many that have yet to see re-release on other CDs. Many of these tracks may end up on other compilations in the futur, but in the meantime this would be a great addition to your collection.

The sound quality may seem flawed, but this is not the fault of the CDs so much as the original recordings which were frequently done on low budgets in makeshift studios with makeshift equipment. Far from being a deficit, this captures much of the DIY spirit of original Chicago house, and did a lot to inspire and influence others that they could create this music, too.

Don't knock it, you need to know it!

4 out of 5 stars This is Original House Music.......2004-06-22

As everyone else has said on here, this is a compilation of ORIGINAL HOUSE MUSIC (aka Chicago House). This is what all current House music was built from - this is the foundation. Another reviewer states that Little Louie Vega, MAW, Pete Tong are CLASSIC HOUSE artists/music. He is correct, but this is the stuff that influenced them, as well as sooo many other artists... TODD TERRY, PAUL VAN DYKE, DERRICK MAY, KEVIN SAUNDERSON, GREEN VELVET, OAKENFOLD, SASHA, DIGWEED, MADONNA, MOBY, take your pick and you ask them what influenced them, 99.9% of them will credit 95% of the artists and tracks on this compilation. Little Louie Vega got his big break when he began DJing back in 86/87 at a place called HEARTHROBs (later home to TWILO), and THIS IS THE STUFF he spun.

So before you critize this compilation for it's simplicity of the tracks, you must remember, this is the beginning of house music. No one used samplers or drum machines back then for dance music. The only ones who did were of the European variety (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Faust) and it was considered NEW AGE music. Very few DJs, when all this started, could even beat match. Disco was all created with live instruments so it was hard to beat match, and no one really thought of it. With the craze of the Technics SL1200MK2 turntable, the synths, and midi, all came about, everything changed. These artists were the few to begin using the stuff to create dance music. Influenced by these HOUSE MUSIC artists, as well as the European New Age scene, Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson created TECHNO. Techno and House music grew side by side, but TECHNO was born out of CHICAGO HOUSE MUSIC. Every dance track you hear now, was born out of CHICAGO HOUSE MUSIC. So appreciate these tracks for their simplicity as well as their historical contribution to all things 'DANCEABLE'!

5 out of 5 stars You must not know your history...........2003-11-30

How can anyone say that this isn't house music? It's obvious that whoever ripped this compilation is 12 years old, and truly ignorant to the orgins of dance music, and the impact that Chicago house had on today's so called music.

Sure these traxs may sound dated by today's standard - but for those in the know - these gems are timeless.Without these, today's dance music wouldnt be where it is.

These sounds layed the groundwork for others to build on. House music was invented in Chicago, and adopted all over the world.

It's a shame that the ignorant would rip these truly historic musical gems. Love live Chicago house music! House nation!

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album..........2007-02-09

As soon as this album arrived, I listened to it all the way through. There are some truly outstanding tracks on here--"Fanfare" featuring Tahiti 80 is truly inspired. "Don't you Know" featuring Clazziquai project is the song that *made* me buy this album. "Take me Away" featuring Ugly Duckling will be stuck in your head for days--truly catchy. I highly recommend this album, especially to fans of Fantastic Plastic Machine's previous work!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute must-have.......2005-06-04

Utterly priceless, which is probably a good thing as it's not cheap! Fly High, Appears, Whatever, et al all brilliant, and all different: no two songs are the same, which is what you often find with so-called 'Western' artists that are locked into a musical style.
I wouldn't suggest this as the best introduction to Ayu for a new fan simply becoz of the cost. Try 'Duty' or 'I Am...' instead.

    4 out of 5 stars Flying High.......2004-12-12

Ayumi's second CD (I believe...) was also my second JPop CD. It was really unexpected. I ordered it without ever hearing her voice so I was kind of shocked when I heard her high pitched voice, but I've really gotten accustomed to it.

Introduction is just a quick little techno melody, about a minute and a half long, and it leads directly into Fly High.

Fly High is really cool. It's also very techno-y and it's a great dance beat. It seems like with this song, I'm always discovering new little noises in the background that make this song even cooler.

Trauma is the first song I heard, but it was a MIDI. The melody to me is sort of cliche. Like you can just tell without ever hearing it exactly what notes she's about to hit. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, because it's still a good song. Just not my favorite...

And Then is one of those songs that I haven't paid much attention to. I'm listening to it right now so I can tell you about it. It's really calm in the beginning but it goes into a great dance beat pretty quickly.

Immature is really good. I especially love the very beginning of the chorus where she goes "Bokudawa kiito" it's unexpected how she laces that together to make a melody. It's another dance beat, but it's not as intense as Introduction or Whatever.

Boys and Girls is one of my 3 favorites on here. It's a really fun song that isn't like her other songs. It's not much of a dance song, but it's upbeat. Of course, since it's Ayumi, there has to be a dance beat mixed in there at some points. It's kind of funny, there's this one little part where it sounds like they actually took a sound directly out of the old Street Fighter games for Genesis and put it in the song.

To Be is another of my 3 favorites because it's a dance song - but a SLOW DANCE song. It's the complete opposite of all the other songs on LOVEppears (no, I didn't spell that wrong). I'm surprised she ddn't make more slow songs her voice is beautiful in it.

End Roll is another of the slower songs. It's more techno than To Be so it kind of pulls it out of the slow dance genre but more into the kind of movies where the kid whose parents just died is walking down the hallway at school and everyone just stares at them, if you know what I mean. That's just whatit reminds me of, one of those sad scenes where the kid is al alone becuase of something that happened. Except for the chorus, though, that would be the part where the lone kid would walk up to them and see if they were okay.

PS II is a GREAT dance song... it's really intense for parts. It's chorus is actually the same as a part of one of the other songs becuase I knew the lyrics without ever hearing it but I still haven't been able to figure out which song it's from. I may be wrong but I definately knew the words the first time I heard it. It drives me crazy. I JUST FIGURED IT OUT I'M SO EXCITED! It shares it's chorus with Powder Snow! YAY I'm happy.

Whatever is my favorite song on here. At the beginning, she repeats "dat dat dat" over and over and she pulls that into the chorus. It's a great dance song but her voice is still great in it.

Too Late is another I just kind of skim over. It's still a realyl cool song 'cuz they have her voice muted for some of the song and it sounds really cool. I also really like the chorus.

Appears is pretty much why I didn't give this CD 5 stars... It's nothing special and I didn't really understand why it's name represents the rest of the CD. I don't like it, I'm not going to lie.

Monochrome is a cool song that's very tekno. Tekno with a 'k' becuase it's not really the type of the techno that pops into yor head like a Moby song or a taty song. Wonderful vocals.

Love ~refrain~ is the other reason why I didn't give the CD 5 stars... it sounds like the music a little Britney-Spears-obsessed little 8 or 9-year-old would listen to. It's WAY too poppy for me.

Who... OMG. This song reminds me so much of Final Fantasy X and that's why I love it so much. It's that mellowed out kind of tune you'd hear in that game and it's so enchanting. Then it gets into this epic, poppy kind of beepy mode, then into her beautiful vocals.

On the extra CD, the only songs I listen to are "A Song for XX" (which I can't figure out how to say... I want to call it what it is, but the Japanese commercials for the CD, the first album, call it "A Song For")

A Song For XX is really pretty. Her voice sounds a little different, though, since it's from a little while before. It's just a remix, but it's cool. Not a dance song by any name, slow or fast, its just one you listen to.

Powder Snow is the song that shares it's chorus with PS II. This is the acoustic orchestra version. It's so beautiful. It's sort of dramatic with all the piano and stuff in the background. Another incredible voice, this is really the only song I think is worth listening to on the second CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Ayumi.......2004-12-07

This album features some classic songs by Hamasaki Ayumi, one of Japan's top pop sensations. Unlike many pop artists, Ayumi manages to create albums with a variety of styles, promising few "sound-a-like" songs. If you're already a fan and like the classic Ayumi sound, as opposed to her more recent stuff, check this album out.

5 out of 5 stars ayu rocks the world forever.......2004-10-09

For me Ayumi Hamasaki is the most talent and gifted female singer ever. No one is better then her period. Her voice is strong and she can hit those high notes very well. The lyrics are sometimes sad, happy and very good. She can truly do anything. She's popular because she's talent and sweet, and her remixes rocks. If you wanna start somewhere start with this album then her other original albums and then her remix albums. The second disc on Love Appears is very good with 2 megamixes and some extra mixes from old songs. For beginners start with A Song For XX then Ayu-mi-x 2 or 3 then some maxi-singles. She also have some dvds out with music videos and live shows, who is truly good. I don't understand how anyone can not like her and her powerful songs. The ballads are very good too, and when they're remixed by Thunderpuss, Dubs and Ferry Corsten wow!! there is heaven afterall. I love her so much so I never listen to anything else then Ayumi Hamasaki the true queen of j-pop. Utada and Koda and all the others have nothing on Ayumi. This album and j-pop in general is the best in music today. I don't care for Cher, Whitney, Britney and Sarah Brightman no AYU ROCKS NOW AND FOREVER folks. I really hope that people will support her and her music forever. I know I will support her in anything she does or will do. She's the best in music today and nothing is ever gonna change that period. I can listen to her albums all the time and never get tired of them. The music is always good and the remixes really brings out the best in the songs. I have played Super Eurobeat 2 like 20 times and still love it so much. I'm a huge fan of her and love everything about her, she's the queen of music FOREVER!!. Thank you for your time people and don't foget to SUPPORT Ayumi Hamasaki forever!!! a swedish fan

    5 out of 5 stars great album.......2004-09-24

You're wrong it's not fake and I bought it and loved it. All songs are awesome and the megamixes are very good too. I have 15 CDs with Ayumi and simply love everything about her. I don't care what other people might think, I love her and her songs. To me she's the best and most talented female singer in the world and no one is never gonna change with I feel period.
