Album Description

"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schrieber and an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel. A blend of high comedy and great tragedy, the film tells the story of a young American man, played by Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings trilogy), who journeys to the Ukraine to find the woman whom he believes saved his grandfather from the Nazis all those years ago.

The soundtrack features two new songs from high energy New York City based gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, including one track not on their current cd. (Note: Gogol Bordello's lead singer plays a role in "Everything Is Illuminated"). Also included are gypsy folk songs from Russia and the Ukraine by Leningrad, Arkadie Severmie, Csokolom and Tin Hat Trio. And finally, Paul Cantelon's ethnic score ties together this nicely cohesive soundtrack.

Passionate, inspired and exotic, this soundtrack truly captures the spirit of the movie as well as Safran Foer's brilliant first novel; it resonates with longing, heartbreak, and a totally unique sensibility; highly recommended.

This is an amazing soundtrack that highlights the two prevalent emotions in the film: hilarity and tragedy. Paul Cantelon deftly mixes an Eastern European feel with pure, gorgeous soundtrack music. Along for the ride are songs by genuinely fun and original bands. I never get tired of it. Sometimes, indeed, there are tracks I can't listen to simply because they're too sad - but then I switch to the upbeat, funny tunes, which always manage to entertain.

1. Odessa Medley: 9/10 - Enjoyable, with fun instruments. It builds up into an intricate array of instruments and melodies, and really picks up at the end, tempting you to let it sweep you along into the movie's crazy world. A great overture to the movie.
2. Leningrad, Zvezda Rok-N-Rolla: 8/10 - Oh, the drama! Leningrad is a Russian band. All of their songs on this album are crazy and fun and fit the craziness of the movie to a T. The horns are wonderful.
3. Csokolom, Amari Szi Amari: 10/10 - Superbly catchy, with that quirky, old feel dominant in the film, this song is a laidback sort of fun. It's the only song on the album not in Ukrainian, Russian, or English: it's Hungarian. This doesn't matter, however, because it fits so perfectly with the feel of the movie.
4. Leningrad, Dikiy Muzhchina: 10/10 - I LOVE this song. It's one my favorites here. The title means "Wild Man" in Russian, and it is definitely a very wild and (dare I say it again?) fun song. The lyrics really are just plain fun to sing along to, even if you don't speak Russian. You can practically feel the energy. In fact, I just now started to sing to it again...
5. Prologue/Babushka: 9.5/10 - This is where a darker mood begins to edge in. It sinks into a waltz that is more bittersweet than tragic, and then slows down to make way for a sweeping, haunting tune. Lovely.
6. Little Jonathan/The Wall: 9/10 - Playful, but once more in a bittersweet sort of way. After awhile it switches gears, swooshing up with energy, befores changing back to that haunting feeling of "Babushka" that I like to think of as simply The Past.
7. Gogol Bordello, Bublitschki: 8/10 - Time for some fun again. This instrumental piece by an immensely talented band (actually, Eugene Hutz, who plays Alex, is the lead singer of Gogol Bordello) mixes an irresistible beat with a traditional Slavic sound.
8. The Con Artists, Peter Miser, Ya-takoy: 9/10 - This definitely brings one back to the silliness of Alex in the beginning of the film. With snippets of his unbelievably hilarious dialogue and an urban beat going in the background, you'll be sucked right in.
9. Leningrad, Malen'kiy Mal'chik: 9/10 - Great fun! Leningrad never fails to entertain with this lazy collection of horns and vocals.
10. Tin Hat Trio, Fear of the South: 8/10 - Here's a piece to relax to. It's lighthearted and fresh.
11.Paul Cantelon, River of Collections: 9/10 - With breathy strings, "River of Collections" urges you quietly but with instistence along the river of The Past.
12. Paul Cantelon, Tank Graveyard/Valse de Suzana/Dee-yed: 9.5/10 - Here is the tragedy I've been referring to. It's sad. Almost unbearably so. It sweeps you up in the conflict of the characters, teasing you with peaks at the truth before fading back into the darkness.
13. Paul Cantelon, Sunflowers: 10/10 - Ukrainian, I believe. Haunting, with strong vocals that cast a spell.
14. Paul Cantelon, War Is Love/eta-Ya: 9.5/10 - It begins with lazy simplicity, but toward the end bursts into a powerful and urgent message.
15. Paul Cantelon, Trachimbrod/Ressurection/Requiem: 10/10 - Simply beautiful. About halfway through, the urgency of the previous tracks finally builds up for the climax, whooshing over you bitterly, sadly, and with almost a sense of determination. Again, it's tragic. You don't hear the lightheartedness of previous tracks, but the slight nudging of a past that doesn't want to haunt: it just wants to resolve itself. To exist.
16. Paul Cantelon, Inside-Out: 10/10 - And it does resolve itself. Here is another bittersweet piece. But this time, it carries a touch of enlightenment (illumination?) with it.
17. Gogol Bordello, Start Wearing Purple: 10/10 - This was the absolutely most perfect song the movie could have ended with. It switches the film seamlessly back into that feel of silly hilarity, single-handedly managing to leave the audience uplifted - a sore necessity for such a partly bleak film!

Overall, one of my favorite soundtracks out there. Whether you've seen the (remarkable) movie or not, get this! It is gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic, powerful, uplifting, and itching to tell you something you've known all your life but just can't quite grasp. In short, a brilliant piece of work.

Elijah Wood was surprising in his portrayal of the main charecter, who is a bit of a "nebish" or dweeb, and a collector of multitudenous often unthinkable items. His search of his family's past which takes him to the Ukraine, and the people he meets are
funny, amusing and often very moving. It's got a shocking thread to it,
but not without humor. I also liked the surprise ending. The music was great!

"You must take a look at the new land," Os Mutantes singer Rita Lee softly proclaims on Everything Is Possible!'s English-language rewrite of Caetano Veloso's "Baby." The Brazilian psychedelic-rock pioneers were addressing a hoped-for American-British audience, but they could also have been singing to their own country's political establishment, which didn't take kindly to the Tropicalia era's fusion of Beatles and Hendrix influences with elements of bossa nova and samba. The result continues to reverberate more than three decades later in the work of Beck, Stereolab, and Cibo Matto, not to mention on late-'90s reissues such as this. for those who are not familiar with the music of Os Mutantes, this is a great CD to get, it is a "best of" compiliation. Combining elements of psychedelia, samba, bossa nova, and pop music, it all blends together very well. A great CD to listen to whle relaing a the end of the day.

Trying to do the impossible.......2005-11-02

I have to give this collection 4 stars because it is the only easy way to get ahold of any Os Mutantes material. That being said, many of the most tripped out songs of Os Mutantes are left off of this collection, including Rita Lee, Top Top, Nao va se perder por ai, etc. Those who are looking for a good quick introduction to how great the music made in Brazil in the 70s are could use this as a good start. But then they should really get ahold of their albums, including Mutantes, Os Mutantes, and Jardim Electrico.

World of Os Mutantes.......2005-03-29

It takes a connoisseur of psychedelic rock and pop to know of (drumroll please) Os Mutantes. This short-lived Brazilian band made some of the most memorable psychedelic pop of the 1960s -- which is really saying something. Some of their best work is compiled in "World Psyschedelic Classics 1," although there are some glaring omissions.

This collection brings together many of the band's best songs, such as the understated charm of "Panis et Circenses," the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," and the cluttered catchiness of "Bat Macumbia." Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.

Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?

And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes and jungle drums -- as in the eerie "Premier Bonheur du Jour" -- get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards. Those tradition instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious.

The one flaw? Lesser-known albums like "Jardim Electro" and "Mutantes" are underrepresented in the selection of songs. Their first album, the self-titled "Os Mutantes" -- also probably their best ever -- is strongly emphasized. However, if you are looking for an excellent individual listen and not a representation of all their albums, then this is a very good find.

Few of the Os Mutantes albums are currently available in the U.S., which would make this the ideal introduction by default. But "World Psychedelic Classics 1" is a fairly good introduction to the band in its own right.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Top drawer.......2007-02-20

Their best albums get better the more you listen & this one dosen't disapoint. I bought the vinyl when it first came out and upon listening the other day discovered another sub-plot that I'd never noticed and split a gut all over again. One thing though. Search out the movie version of this. Don't believe it's ever been out on DVD but I've seen the VHS (& beta) versions around.

Dig a hole deeper enough and everybody will wanna jump in........2005-06-22

This 1974 outing predicted the whole UFO / Roswell interest that reached it's peak 20 years later on TV and many of the new-age concepts now considered common place. But it's the timing of the jokes, the expert delivery and the well fleshed out characters that make this one of the Firesign's best. A coherent, honestly conceived work that inspires repeated listenings and endless quoting.

Firesign explores Aliens.......2005-05-06

I'm going to be brutally honest about this album. Their other generally early efforts like HOW CAN YOU BE..., DON'T CRUSH THAT DWARF..., WAITING FOR ELECTRITIAN are the first albums you should get if you're new to the Firesign boys. Those were surreial multi-layered timeless classics, that were ahead of their time, and both those and the Bozos album told the future for some things.

For all I know there aren't extra-terrestrials, but maybe back in 1974 anything was possible.

The first 5 or so minutes of this album is absolutley hilarious, and draws the listener in to hear more. But by the time of the Civil War recording, they begin to overkill, the bits drag along and much of it is inaudible during unexplained thudding in the slavery bit. The album doesn't get better except maybe the phone conversations, and I love how Cox walks out and the TV remains on. But the album never really recovers, and I sit there wondering why I'm listening to nothing. It's not funny, it's not music, or a real story to follow, it's nothing. Minus one star. There is a really abrupt, anti-climaxed ending, and no sequel opportunities possible. Brilliant!

The thing that was most surprising was that this album doesn't grow on you. It basically gets less funny, because you know what they are gonna say. In an album like DWARF you hear something new in the backround, or find a connection everytime. This was just a weak album, and I heard it was a classic, but it wasn't. Minus another.

The greatest hits of Firesign album has included the Army Training Film which seems like the only thing out of context that would make sense, but not neccisairily the best of the album.

Maybe I'm wrong, because people seem to call it one of the great Firesign Theatre albums. I reccomend you buy the first four albums and listen in chronological order, as the albums even cleverly sound as if they fade in and out of eachother (more proof of Firesign's brilliance.)

This would be good as a 6th or 7th purchase as I find it's definatley not their best, but try it out anyway, because this is simply my opinion.

The movie is them lip-synching (unsucessfully for the most part) to the album. Nino's commentary on holes, Cox's conclusion to side one, and the two fore fathers in the middle of a trip are not included in the film. (We really needed to see the snake river and endless sea.) The only new bit was about 3 seconds of Gary hitching up Cox's trailor. Dis-a-ponit-ing. However, the waiting room style of the music of the end credits music is irresistable.

The perfect entry point for Firesign neophytes.......2004-12-27

Of all the Firesign Theater's essential recordings, "Everything You Know" is the most accessible. All the signature elements are here: savage wordplay, pitiless skewering of pop culture and political icons, and the pitch-perfect comic timing of the performances.

The TV shows and films within the radioplay are pure genius. The "Happy Hour News" with Pat Hat's interview of motorcycle daredemon Rebus Caneebus (hey, honey, y'ever heard of me?) plays like this evening's local news; the travelogue "The Golden Hind" features a weird alien encounter in the Arizona desert; and the "Army Training Film" with Genl. Curtis Goatheart (they think he is insane - yet he outranks them. His option: command!) is at once hilarious and as chilling as a Donald Rumsfeld press conference.

It sounds heavy, although it's anything but. The action jumps from scene to scene at breakneck speed, and the layers of subtext aren't always apparent - which is why the Firesign Theater's miniature epics demand repeated listenings. It's as absurd as Monty Python, as witty as Oscar Wilde, and as playful as James Joyce.

The story and presentation of "Everything You Know" is a bit more linear than Firesign classics like "Don't Crush That Dwarf" and "Waiting for the Electrician", making it an excellent introduction to Firesign's rich body of comic work. Absolutely essential listening!

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

Soulful Debut Album..........2006-03-30

This album is one that I always end up returning to. Donny Hathaway's vocal and piano talent really shine on this one and that combined with the strong song selection made for an impressive debut album. I don't usually like instrumentals that much, but "The Ghetto" remains one that I never tire of. The addictive groove of Donny Hathaway's keyboard work and the drums have made this a favorite of mine. "Thank You Master (For My Soul)" also remains one of the most moving songs I've ever heard. Donny Hathaway's vocals are simply amazing, and he attains just the right touch of gospel delivery in this thank you to God. Donny Hathaway is someone who deserves more credit than he gets for his contributions to music, and any fan of R&B should own this. His live CD is also highly recommended if you enjoy his music. When Donny Hathaway died the world not only lost a talented musician, but also lost a very spiritual and caring brother. Thank God he left us with this music to remember him and his message.

Every time I hear Donny Hathaway, I am so moved with both great joy and awe of his god-given gifts as well as sadness over how his career bascially went under the radar while he was alive and of course, how his life ended so tragically!
I often think about how pleasantly surprised he would
have been to see his work have such an influence on a
whole generation of younger talents who were but embryos when he was doing his thing all those years ago!
I also imagine him being pleased by his daughter
Layla and her success!
This was his best and most cohesive studio album
and it has some great gems on it..my faves are:
"Je Vouz Aime Vouz (That Means I Love You)", "Misty",
"Sugar Lee" and "Thank You Master For My Soul"
all which kill me in their own unique ways!
Of course, I prefer the live versions of "The Ghetto" and "Young, Gifted & Black" to the ones on here.
Donny was one of the few artists who could create
something live that was better than what he did
in the studio!
Donny Hathaway is the invisible every man of
R&B / Jazz / Soul and his influence, vocal and

Listening to this disc reminds me of why I love music - Donny Hathaway is gone too soon from this world (musically). I wish he could have gotten the help he needed to deal with his inner demons but his musical legacy definitely helps ME get through my own Tryin Times and battle my own demons and for that, I am forever greatful.

This entire album is exquisitely excellent, there's not one bad track but there are some that stand out to me:

Voices Inside (Everything is Everything) - great musical production!! 10/10

Je Vous Aime (I Love You) - so soulful, such a beautiful love song. 10/10

Misty - excellent remake 10/10

Tryin Times - timeless song expressing commentary about what was going on then but also speaks to what is going on in today's times 10/10

Thank You Master For My Soul - excellent soulful gospel song that doesn't overpower 10/10

The Ghetto - although I prefer the live versions of this song, it's pretty damn close to a masterpiece & just as powerful as any song on Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On' 10/10

To Be Young, Gifted & Black - one of my favorite Donny tracks, picks up my spirits every single time I hear it 100/10

A Dream - words can't suffice for how much I love this song - the arrangement and Donny's phrasing throughout...make this song heaven for me. 100/10

I just love this album. I have so much respect for Mr. Hathaway. It's too bad that he was taken from us too soon. Everything is Everything is an album that I listen to for so many reasons. I listen to it at the office when I need inspiration (Thank You Master For My Soul, To Be Young, Gifted & Black), when I reflect on how fortunate I am to live in a world of opportunity when others aren't (The Ghetto, Trying Times) and when I realize the true power of love (I Believe to My Soul, Je Vous Aime Beacoup).

Moby is an ambitious man, both musically and philosophically, and that quality seeps into every aspect of Everthing Is Wrong, from the wunderkind DJing that stretches the genre limits of techno to the angry, antiestablishment manifesto on the CD sleeve. The record's opening salvo of dancey club music sets the listener up for "All That I Need Is to Be Loved," which, out of nowhere, bludgeons would-be club kids with tuneless, mad vocals and punked-out guitar solos. The same bait-and-switch formula repeats twice on the CD at almost regular intervals in the industrial shriek of "What Love" and the sudden, slow, and acoustic bent and folksy vocals of "Into the Blue." All three shifts are jarringly abrupt. However, dance-floor continuity is in Moby's blood, and he uses these songs as parts one, two, and three of the underlying rage that drives the record's concept. Without these three tracks, in fact, you'd have a moody yet convincingly cohesive danceathon, bouncing between house breakbeats ("Feeling So Real," "Bring Back My Happiness") and blissed-out trance ("God Moving Over the Face of the Waters"). With the release of Everything Is Wrong, Moby procured an entry into the major-label circuit. Covering many techno genres, the album shows Moby's desire to be all things at once. Flaunting breakbeats, noisy industrialism, acid trance, ambient textures, and techno-pop, the mix is often hard to grasp. Although this speaks of Moby's versatility, the liner notes should contain a disclaimer warning the listener of the elastic moods which may be produced by the dubious nature of the tracks. Whereas the songs are noticeably varied, the essential song-writing techniques often fail to progress beyond minimal chord structures and predictable measures. i don't want to swim forever........2006-05-25

well, the year is 2006, and the album "Everything is Wrong" came out in '95. How sad (but absolutely amazing) it took me THIS long to actually discover this album and give it a chance.

Putting all the wonderful songs aside, I would like to mention one song on this album that is absolutely incredibly breath-taking. Its not even breath-taking, you can't even breath to lose your own breath!

"When It's Cold I'd Like To Die"

This piece is just brilliant. I've listened to it non-stop today and probably tomorrow and the next day. Being an artist/actor - I have written a performance art piece to the minute I heard and in hopes of performing it and getting it out there. Its just gorgeous and I don't even think my words can explain it. I come across many songs as so, but I never ever expected this of Moby (not a bad thing) but like everyone else here, I think I can speak for everyone else here, that this really displays Moby as an artist, and an amazing one.

The ending of the song is perfect, as if the song is just a moment in time, an epiphany, and at the end - it just ALL fades away in an echo. Its as if the song will continue in its next life.

If my piece ever gets performed, i'll be glad to share it with all the fans.

Techno heaven.......2006-01-16

In terms of depth, this is the pinnacle of electronic music. It may not be as cohesive as Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole, but what Moby does here is breathtaking: he takes every kind of emotion, whether it's love ("Everytime You Touch Me"), elation ("Feeling So Real"), longing ("All That I Need is To Be Loved"), hope ("Into the Blue"), rage ("What Love"), or peace ("When It's Cold,I'd Like to Die") and abandons the notion of techno as pure dance music, and for that, Moby revolutionized electronica. This is the most important Moby album because of the diversity. This album has trance, classical, rave, hardcore...it is simply amazing. Everything great about Moby is right here. Play is also a great album, but if you want a tighter collection of songs, this is the place to start-no doubt. Brilliant. A

One of the most distinctive voices in popular music.......2004-05-14

Billy Eckstine was legendary. He is one of those performers I wish I could have seen in person. His distinctive baritone voice made anything he sang extraordinary. This 2 CD set is one of the most well thought out and enjoyable collections I own. Billy Eckstine recorded for M-G-M between 1947 and 1954. Here you will find the original recordings of many of Billy's biggest solo hits as well as more jazz oriented tunes backed by Woody Herman's and George Shearing's groups. But I prefer the ballads, particularly 1950's "My Foolish Heart" and his signature song "I Apologize". Perhaps my favorite tune on the entire set is the final one. "Passing Strangers" is a duet he recorded with Sarah Vaughn back in 1957. This one will literally send chills up and down your spine. It is an extraordinary recording! There are 42 tracks in this collection and over two hours of recorded bliss. This is a great collection to "crash" with. The 24 page booklet is one of the best I've seen with extensive biographical information, rare photos and a short discography. This is a collection of timeless classics that you can enjoy for a lifetime. Highly recommended.

A master voice of his time.......2003-08-24

Being only 17, my father introduced me to Billy Ecksitne, and wow! He has such an amazing voice, I hear it goes for three octaves! Everything I have is yours, Foosl rush in, Blue Moon are all beautiful ballads, MrB's Blues is a bit of a bebop big band track, Temptaiton has quite an avante-garde melody, Somehow and bewildered feature beautiful backing singingadn are forties type ballads. Caravan is a very unusual song, almost Arabian in parts, Body and soul and my foolish heart are straight forward ballads but have such great melodies, the foru tracks with Sarah Vaughan are at times unusual but often ballads. I wanna be loved, you've got me crying again and I've never been in love before are like My foolish heart, soft and melodious but then comes the big hit, I appologise, such a well sung, emotional ballad. Then there's foru Jazz songs, As long as I live, I left my hat in Haiti, Here comes the blues and life is just a bowl of cherries. Woody herman sings with him on that last one, Then there's two ballads, Wonder why and I'm a fool to want you. Takign a chance on love and You're driving me crazy are cool jazz, Early autumn is a fantastic ballad and Tenderly-April in paris are easy,listening jazz, a bit gloomy in some tracks, Eckstines' vocals impeccable. Coquette is a cheery forties ballad as is the follow up and then there's two blues/jazz songs in How High the Moon and St.Louis blues, followed by two beautiful ballads, don't get around much anymore and lost inloveliness the album is concluded by Passing strangers, a beautiful, emotion ballad with Sarah Vaughan. Not only is Eckstine superb but the people backing him, Hugo Winterhalter, Russ Case, Pete Rugolo, Woody Herman, George Shearign quintet, the Bobby tucker quartet, Lou bring, Nelson Riddle, The metronome all stars [featuing Teddy Wilson and Lester Young!] and Hal Mooney, relive [or imagine] the fifties with not only one of the best singer of modern music history, bt also a good lot of badn leaders and instrumentalists from the period too!

I've known of Billy for years.......2003-07-16

When I was a pre-teen (1943 to 1955) my mother listened to Billy Eckstine (and others) regularly and I enjoyed his music from the begining. I never thought I could get collections of his music again until I just did a search in his name and found so much of his music had been copied onto present day media. I now can relive all the nostalga that his voice elicits. No one had or has a voice like Billy Eckstine's.

It makes me feel young again.......2002-08-25

The first time I heard Billy Eckstine in person was in about 1950 in Boston at the RKO theatre. I had an album clutched in my arms just bought next door with most of these songs on it, not all. I didn't have the nerve to go backstage for an autograph on it at the age of 19, but now I can have his songs on CD, not that pretty used up 78 rpm which I treasure, but doesn't sound like a CD. He is getting the credit today for what he should have back then. Besides which he was sooo handsome. I adore Sinatra, but Billy is right up there. Bigger voice, softer personality, good jazz. Too bad it isn't on cassette for my car.

The Incredible Mr. B.......2001-08-23

What an unbeleivable voice. I first heard Billy Eckstine on a west coast all-stars tape. The two song i heard him perform are part of this collection,How High the Moon? Parts 1 & 2 and St. Louis Blues, Pt. 1 & 2. From this I decided I needed to find out what more work he did. When i found this collection i knew i had a new favorite Jazz vocalist. Billy has a style as well as a voice like no one else. He is the kind of guy you imagine women just swooning at his feet when he says hello. That voice, its incredible. Songs like My foolish heart and tenderly are just perfect for his vocal stylings and just lend themselves to become some of his best work. If you don't have this CD, you need to get it because its a must have.

Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02

Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"

Unimpressive.......2006-03-11

I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.

better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06

but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.

all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out

Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17

Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).

I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!

Not your average white band.......2005-07-29

"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.

Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

This Album Sucks!.......2005-12-21

If you like the more rootsy sound of Johnston era Doobies,
I dought you would like this. Sounds very dated and nods to the
disco sound of the time it was recorded. The only reason it gets
2 stars is that the musicians play this crap about as well as they can. I normally don't completly pan albums, but this just reminds me of how bad the state of rock was in the late seventies. This is a sour note in my record collection.

First solo effort post Doobie Brothers.......2005-07-20

Johnston's first solo outing contained what could have been a step beyong his Doobie's material. It has the same producer, loads of great sessionmen including Michael McDonald, Nicolette Larson, Bill Payne (Little Feat) Jim Keltner, the Tower of Power Horns and the Memphis Horns. There was one MAJOR problem with this album. The SONGS ARE NOT THERE. Plain and simple, you can add lush production and good musicianship, but if the songs aren't there, the songs aren't there. Johnston was trying for a more "current" sound. It failed. It was more like bad disco. For a better Johnston solo effort go to his next album Still Feels Good. Better songs, more "doobie-ish" material.

An absolute masterpiece.......2004-12-22

I bought this on LP long ago and thought this hit a bull's eye for Tom Johnston! I could not believe how great these songs were and how much they will make a bad day feel a little bit better. The only weakness I see on this cd is "Outlaw," which doesn't seem like it took to much time to write and sounds like a throw in. However, all the other tracks have a soulful feel that is just wonderful. I am so glad Wounded Bird released this on cd....it's about time somebody did!

Classic Doobies Sound.......2004-11-13

I f you are not a fan of the Michael McDonald-era Doobies (and I am included in that category), then this is the sound for you. That distictive voice coupled with the trademark guitar sound and Ted Templeman production kept me going when the "other band" wasn't happening. Listen to "Small Time Talk" for that characteristic sound. It will put a smile on your face-it does to mine.

Doobies Out-takes.......2004-11-03

This is a nice little album from Tom Johnston; it sounds very much like a Doobies album but without I'm sorry to say very good songs. It is even produced by Ted Templeman!! Standout track for me is 'Savannah Nights'. The rest of the very short album (29 minutes) just flows away.
Why did Wounded Bird not release this album together with "Still Feels Good" (33 minutes) on 1 CD ?
