The multi-national Crammed Discs-Ziriguiboom-Six Degrees triumvirate is the force behind several tropical world salads, wherein classic and cutting-edge styles are shredded, tossed, re-imagined and transformed. Zuco 103 have released two previous exercises in frothy, mind-bending musical shape shifting. The Dutch-based trio consists of Lilian Vieira, a Brazilian-born chanteuse and co-composers Stefan Schmid (drums) and Stefan Kruger (aka Stuv, on keyboards), plus a tight back-up band that includes a sultry saxophone and a shimmering West African kora. The group's sonic language applies trip-hop, light jazz, electronica, subtle drum 'n' bass and other urban sounds to rich gleanings from the lead singer's ancestral samba, afoxé, bossa nova and forró, along with grooves from the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle-East. Vieira swerves between sophisticated, hallucinatory evocations of Billie Holiday and Elis Regina (the Judy Garland of Brazil), torrid belting and offhand, conversational raps with all the risqué flair of a born scene-stealer. The mix is further enhanced by the presence of two legendary figures--Roberto Menescal, an arranger-singer whose career began in Rio during the sixties--and the brilliant, wildly idiosyncratic Jamaican producer, songwriter and vocalist, Lee "Scratch" Perry. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Incredible CD! Very soulful, funky, eclectic, ect. Nice find........2006-12-14
Even though I don't speak the language, this CD is hot. I come from an old school, East Coast Hip Hop backround with intrests in Renaissance Jazz, Old school MTV 80's rock, NY House music, Acid Jazz, ect, but I've just always liked Soul in my music. This CD has a nice mix of all of the above. If you like producers like Vikter Duplaix, house music, Regge, Afro Cuban & Latin Jazz, ect, you'll like this CD.
I Am Not Hip Enough for this..........2005-09-20
...but I love it anyway. Outrageously cool Brazilian pop lead by the sexy vocals of Lilian Vieira. Programming rules the day with lots of dance beats, bits of reggae & rap, more than a hint of funk. Big energy, great guest artists and fun-fun-fun for days. If this doesn't get you moving, check your pulse to make sure you're still breathing.
The best album so far from this Euro-Brazilian dance band.......2005-09-07
I had mixed feelings about the last two albums by the Dutch-Brazilian electro-dance ensemble, but this record really got my toes tapping. On the giddy, exhiliarating opening track, "Na Magueira," singer Lilian Vieira bursts forth with an incandescent homage to the sprightly jazzy rhythm style of '60s samba-soul diva Elza Soares -- Vieira's version being draped in a contemporary techno-tinged sound mix... The band's roots in Europhilic dance music come back to the fore in a few of the house-ier tracks, but their explorations of African pop (on "Duele Le Le") and cameos by dub reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry make this disc their richest, most resonant album to date. Nice stuff; catchy and clever, and playful as well. Recommended!

Along with Suba and a host of other acts on the Brasil 2mil compilation, Zuco 103 are one of the contemporary Brazilian acts that Six Degrees Records have brought to the world stage via their Travel series. Zuco 103 blend jazzy electronic pop, trip-hop, and lightweight drum & bass with the joyful sounds of Brazilian samba, bossa nova, and tropicalia. Although vocalist Lillian Vieira is Brazilian, her two bandmates are Dutch and German, lending a distinct blend of European and South American musical styles to the music. The result is a refreshingly light, airy sound that can swing from groovy, chirpy electropop ("Brazilectro") that sounds like a South American Stereolab to campy modern exotica ("No Bar do Samba") and funky hip-hop lite ("Auga Mineral") with a few stops at the drum & bass shop in between. Short on depth but long on pep and snappy grooves, Outro Lado is perfect listening for an extended cocktail hour or beach party. There's even an inviting green libation on the CD cover. --Carl Hanni
Customer Reviews:
Catchy and stylistic dance grooves.......2003-03-06
Well, I bought Zuco 103's two releases in reverse order and was slightly dissapointed with this, their first release. However, that is not to say anything bad or that this disc isn't good, it is just that the second release is so good. After several listens and getting over my own bias I founfd this disc to be pretty darn good. Very innovative stuff, quirky beats to the samba rhythmns makes for some interesting electronica. The second and title track, Outro Lado ( The Other Side) pretty much sums up in terms of music the edgy yet soft and sensual vibe this disc produces. Everytime I hear this song I think my disc is stuck because they do that repeat ding, ding, ding, thing, only to ease back into the groove. On this particular track sultry songstress LilianVieira, her of the wild- looking retro afro, cork screw hair, is only taunting and teasing. Her voice is catchy and infectous and even though my understanding of Portugese is next to nil I understand good music and you will too. The language is no barrier. Besides, the booklet includes selected lyrics in English. "Zabumba No Mar" features Vieira in a rap mode that is very cool; it is suttle and with just the right hook. She seems to be at her best on tracks like "Fome Total/Hunger for Love" where her sensuality is dripping sex appeal as she sings about her own dependence on love. She can be soft and gentle like the classic "Girl from Ipenema" but is even more entertaining on songs where her playfullness and soul comes across. "Cujo and Cuja" is a song based on a poem by Shaca that tells the story of being poor and black in a narrative style to a drum and bass beat. If you like trip-hop, jazzy interludes and nu samba stylings than this is a good disc for you. If you can only get one Zuco 103 disc, go for their second release as it is an improvement over this one, which is a good thing.
Okay... but there definitely are better.......2001-12-02
I picked this up when it came out a few years ago and never really got into this. I first heard Zuco 103 on the compilation "Brasil 2Mil" by sixdegreesrecords and liked Outro Lado, but Zuco's feature release didn't impress me much at all. There were a few catchy songs, and the Outro Lado mix on this cd was pretty cool. But otherwise the sound effects and most of the rest of the tracks seemed too gimmicky and "silly" even. You may enjoy this album at first, but I ended up shelving it and haven't listened to it much since.
I agree with the previous reviewer - there are better albums out there. I'd pick up Brasil 2Mil instead and enjoy the Zuco track there and hear some of the different/diverse sounds. Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions is phenomenal for a "new" sound. I also would recommend Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo (original).
Your Money's Better Spent Somewhere Else.......2001-06-02
This album is fine -- decently produced and conceived -- but it is a bit hackneyed. It grooves, but the sampled sounds aren't particularly fresh and the production is fairly stale. If you really want to hear innovative fusion of trad Brazilian and Electronica, try Suba's "San Paolo Confessions" or Amon Tobin's "Supermodified."
Sexy, hoppin', inventive.......2000-10-10
I bought Outro Lado solely because I'd heard the title song on a net radio station and couldn't get enough of it. It's got a hypnotic sexy beat that makes me want to find someone to groove with. Upon first listen, I was disappointed that the slower tunes alternated with kind of hyper, a-little-too-electronic songs like #2 Brazilectro and #4 Zabumba No Mar - which always makes it hard to maintain any particular mood and that might annoy some of my higher strung company.
The dreamy songs remind me of Nightmares on Wax's Carboot Soul. Very provocative and sensual. And then there are a couple of more traditionally composed Brazilian tunes some with a more batucada beat. If you like any of the music I've mentioned, I highly recommend checking them out. If anything, Outro Lado is an all around great dance party CD.
another great brazilian release.......2000-08-22
although i like old brazilian musicians like Tom Jobim, Maria Bethania... this is something different more modern and showing that brazilian music is going on (check out also Suba). only thing i personaly don't like on this album is that the lyrics in the booklet are translated... that's becouse i speak some portugues and i like things more in original

Greater than the sum of its parts.......2005-04-11
When I first got TEX 3 a decade ago, I found a few songs that instantly grabbed me, copied them onto tapes and put the CDs back on the shelf. Recently, while loading my CD collection onto my computer, I listened to this with fresh ears, and discovered that the tracks I had once neglected were just as good as the rest and that each CD was best played start to finish, without picking and choosing particular cuts. Still hypnotic and trance-inducing, after all these years.

One of my all time favorites..........2003-07-01
There's just something about disk one of this double CD: the first nine tracks flow together in a most stimulating and hypnotic way (by Air Liquide, 808 State, Bando de Gaia, et al). I own a huge stack of Trance collections, including others from the Volume label (volumes 1 and 2, Breakbeat Science, etc.), but I've never found anything that switches me on like disk one of this set. Highly recommended.
Super Trance.......1999-02-11

Cool Stuff - A Great Collection.......2007-03-09
Suite 706 is one of my favorite chill collections. The first tune, Les Courants D'Air, sets the sexy mood that reflects the CD cover art. Serrano Anthem (Amor/Amor) really gets the heat turned up - can't beat those moans of pleasure and the finely crafted music mixed in. Don't get me wrong, though, this collection is highly diverse and sounds like the best of Costes, Del Mar, or Mezzanine. It is amazing that this compilation came out in 2001 - talk about ahead of your time!
I feel this CD is really well balanced, and would make the ideal background to an evening with friends. This is an overall GREAT effort that will not disappoint!
like fungus - it will grow on you.......2005-03-19
so there i am ripping this when i see an unknown 16th track... wuzthis? amazoon doesn't list it. no mention on the back cover tracklist? ahhh! but on the track list inside... there it is! quite a space below the track listing for #15. ?? AND it's written backwards with no track number?? A quick trip to a mirror reveals: GHOST BANX DE FRANCE - "FOR MY LIFE" So, not only do you get a fantastic, extraordinary compilation, but it has 16 tracks not 15!!
FANTASMO!.......2004-04-07
If enjoying another "chill out" compilation has you interested, step back... because this has the long lasting stamina to be one of the best in the genre. As far as a variety of tracks.. this has just that.. variety... with feeling! I fell in love with St. Moritz Vibes (the first Jacky Jayet compilation I heard.) Naturally, I staretd seeking out other French chillout compliatons.. and I must say.. that this runs a very close second to "Vibes." With the smooth and exciting Banx de France, to the lush sounds of Angelo.. the music gets that downtempo flow going. The perfect music for couples in front of the fire.. aromatherapy candles lit... and of course... well... ya know.
A real surprise........2003-08-07
I bought this CD for curiosity, i like the french chill-out (Costes, Budhabar, Man Ray, etc), so i decided to buy it.
The first time that i put it into my stereo, i said....no this is not what i liked...too commercial...but i was wrong!
Second, third ...and a lot of others time i discovered this CD as ones to have it.
The CD it's a mix between a Cafe del Mar (for example in the songs of artists like Chicane, Sven Van Hees, Angelo, A reminescent drive)and a french sexy-pop-funk-soul (like Banx of France, Grand tourism, ETC)but also a very important songs like Phantasm (one of the best of AIM) and a particular Laid back (nice version of Space Raiders).
Finally a secret...the songs are 16 and not 15 as reported in the CD cover (the 16th is For my Life - Banx of France)...but if you look with care the internal cover on a mirror you will find it!!!!!
Fabulous Mood Music.......2003-05-06
My husband and I have never played this CD at a party or when we have friends over for dinner, without someone commenting on the music. It gets rave reviews from everybody and is always one of the CD's we grab for fabulous mood music. Ironically, when we stayed at the Hyatt Paris Madeleine they were playing Buddha Bar. (Wonderful Hotel!) The Buddha Bar series is good, also Hotel Costes, and Man Ray. Track #4 is my favorite.

Old and dated but still very good.......1999-02-20
This is a double CD set that has about 30 long tracks. I used to buy Volume's label because I had too little money to buy much else. Volume gives really good value for the buck. There is some great stuff on this (like Cosmic's Spacetrack and the best System 7 mix ever) and some not so great stuff. Volume gives you a lot of variety so there will be at least a couple tracks that you'll like. Listening back to the sounds of 1992-3 really shows how synths and technology have changed over the years. These tracks just feel different from a lot of the oversampled and un-intelligent mixes of today. A quick note, if you like the DJ Humpty Vision / Junior Vasquez sound, then don't buy this. However, if you're more into Moby, The Aphex Twin, FSOL, etc. etc. you'll wear it out. Finally, if this CD set is re-released, buy it. I had my original copy stolen in Seoul 3 years ago and have been looking for a replacement ever since. It's been a frustrating search. -JR

Great mix of singers and music.......2007-02-25
Joe Lynn Turner was my main point of interest in buying the Brazen Abbot CDs. I find out very quickly that Vikström and Edman are excellent singers also. The musicians on this album are all incredible and the songs really are great. Sometimes when you get that much talent in the room the band suffers but not here. I would recommend this to anyone who loves melodic hard rock.

Album Description
10 Years ago the success story of Brazen Abbot under the direction of the bulgarien composer/multi-instrumentalist Nikolo Kotzev began. Kotzev formed his own group Brazen Abbot with ex-Europe musicians Ian Haughland and Mic Michaelis as instrumentalists and the two vocalists Göran Edman and Thomas Vikström (Candlemass). 1995 saw the arrival of the debut Live And Learn, for which the guitar maestro earned enthusiastic reviews from all over the world. Eye Of The Storm, recorded with new addition John Leven (also ex-Europe) on bass and Joe Lynn Turner as an additional vocalist, followed one year later with another cavalcade of melodic hard rock. The third Brazen Abbot recording, Bad Religion, impressed with the same line-up and a stylistically similar concept in 1997. Now the terrific first three records will be rereleased.
