Album Description

The man from UNKLE is back! This time around, in Global Underground's continued effort to explore the unpolluted dancefloors and sonic landscapes of the world, we took a little trip with the living legend himself, James Lavelle, to Romania where we visited some old Count's tomb, drank loads of plum brandy and partied the nights away with James on the decks of Bucharest's hottest, darkest and simply wickedest club `Studio Martin'. It is through James' gigs in Romania that his inspiration came for his long-awaited, latest addition to the Global Underground catalogue, Romania #026.

Last year Lavelle made his debut with Global Underground with a mix from Barcelona, #023, an absolute blinder of an album. Since then he's spent the last year in the studio with Richard File as UNKLE making the awesome Never Never Land album which is as of yet domestically unavailable only serving to increase the fevered anticipation of the many die-hard UNKLE and James Lavelle fans. He has also been busy remixing the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, DJ Shadow and even the great rock monsters Metallica!

5 out of 5 stars lavelle live @ bukharest.......2004-05-15

This mix album at Bukharest represents how twisted one can get in oder to play with other people in a way that with which, one can show his love for discordance that is intelligently added to the mainstream pseudonyms of the shack ass aura.
It might spin some minds or may evade to punch the brainline of many but the thing with mix is puerly of the feel of it at times when you loss the proper attention required for getting enlightment. I think J.Davis is reknowned to have greatest influence on him but this specific mix is coming out of the condescending of the lavelle guy.
Way to go Lavelle you will be appreciated by it.

5 out of 5 stars HARD, DRITY, and DEEP.......2004-03-13

Even though the whole GU series has been goin for quite some time it really was hit or miss on most of them. lately though something has happened, it's not just a mere 2cd mix but much much more. Being a fan of U.N.K.L.E and the last J.Lavelle GU (23), I purchaced this withouth any kind of hesitation, but truthfully i dident know what to expect. All i knew is that it was gonna be good. Strewn together between acid house, electro, and dirty breaks and rock its definately varied to please just about anybody with a heartbeat. With Meat Katie, U.N.K.L.E, and special re-edits of songs this GU real unique and hopefully sets a new trend for other Mixes to follow. Let's hope SASHA's GU comp has similer touches of greatness.

4 out of 5 stars A DJ's mix is only as good as the songs in it.......2004-03-12

I picked up this mix a few days ago and I wanted it to sink in a little before saying anything about it. The thing is there isn't all that much there to sink in. I'll admit that I don't have any U.N.K.L.E. recordings, however I really enjoyed their remix of "No One Knows" and had hoped that this CD set would have more of the same. Now there are some very cool songs here, specifically at the end of the second disc, but the majority of the tracks here are sort of ho-hum and don't do that much for me. As cool as U.N.K.L.E.'s "In a State" is (Sasha's mix is fantastic), I find it a bit unnecessary to feature it twice. The same goes for some of the somewhat random voice-overs on many of the songs.

All in all, the mix does deliver some satisfying tunes, and it's worth checking out, but don't rush out to get it. I'd give it 3 and a half stars if I could, but the book-like packaging is pretty cool and here Lavelle does go out with a bang. For what it's worth, I can't help but feel as though this mix doesn't quite live up to the standard that has been set by some other GU featured artists. Hopefully Sasha's recently announced return to the label will raise the bar once again.

4 out of 5 stars Good Times in Romania.......2004-03-12

Eclectic is probably the best way to describe this CD. Lavelle admits that the flavour is eclectic and easy listening. I couldn't agree more. By far one of my favorite tracks on this CD is the UNKLE "reconstruction" of Queens of the Stone Age-No One Knows. GREAT TRACK. This CD is certainly a showcase for Lavelle and Richard File under the name UNKLE. The remixes are sublime and add to the experience of this CD!
This is another SOLID addition to the Global Underground series and is well worth a listen! I can gaurantee that this CD will give you an eargasm!

5 out of 5 stars So good........2007-01-26

This is just one more Global Underground stamp of qualtiy. Anything GU stamps its name on is wonderful.

This is a great and well-blended 2 disc set. Lavelle is his own animal and you can hear the uniqueness in his mix. A lot of others imitate Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Matt Darey, etc.... Remember that Lavelle is UNKLE, someone who all of these folks have mixed at one time or another. When you listen to this set, you realize a unique and different refreshing style of DJ.

5 out of 5 stars this works...now more than ever.......2006-10-08

I'm truly glad I didn't give credence to all the jaded reviewers when contemplating buying this. I'd have missed out on something (finally) pushing the envelope in an otherwise monochromatic genre. Though a few years old, this compilation digs in deep and sets some pretty elastic boundaries that not many mix cds can keep up with. Both discs offer some truly inspiring peaks and like one of the other reviewers said - bring paper and pen because if nothing else, Lavelle's progressions are solid, funky and will have you shaking your head, smirking. I find it hard to listen to all the way through without having to rewind certain breaks and firing up my trigger finger. It's a different path no doubt, but to those searching - this will be one of those invaluable additions to your collection. Check it out quality monitors if you can.

3 out of 5 stars New GU series CD or an UNKLE remixes album????.......2005-09-23

I was disapointed when listening to this mix cd, mainly cause there's a lot of UNKLE cuts, Lavelle uses a lot of Acapellas from UNKLE's album NEVER EVER LAND, this album seems more like an UNKLE remix album than a new Global Underground mix set, a little fall by the British label I think....anyway I hope an improvement on the next Lavelle's set.

3 out of 5 stars It doesn't quite work.......2005-09-16

Most of the songs sound too similar to each other to provoke any sort of excitement. I am big fan of Unkle, but there are too many Unkle cuts here. Granted, Lavelle is Unkle, but he could have left the self-promotion out. Anyhow, this could have been a one-disc release. As another reviewer said, it's quite boring.

2 out of 5 stars Boring performance.......2005-08-20

I'm a big fan of UNKLE and I was quite disappointed by this CD: the mix is rather boring and uninspired.
If you like James Lavelle or Unkle, you should try "Do androids dream of electric beats?", "An UNKLE soundscape" or "Edit Music for a film": those are much better remixes, with great beats and samples.
