Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Mamma Mia.......2007-03-22
I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!
Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21
This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!
JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08
I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.
Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29
Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show
Not good at all.......2007-01-09
This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Gimme Fiction is Spoon's loosest, most eclectic effort yet. While still sounding like themselves, the Austin-based band manages to evoke a number of other artists on their fifth full-length. (It's a neat trick.) On proto-glam opener "The Beast and Dragon, Adored," Britt Daniels channels the David Bowie of The Man Who Sold the World. Then there's slinky jam "I Turn My Camera On," where he conjures up Prince or Mick Jagger, circa "Miss You," by singing in a higher register. As indicated by the title, "Sister Jack" sounds like early Who (i.e. "Happy Jack"), while "They Never Got You" sounds like Plastic Ono Band-era John Lennon. Do all these different styles hang together? For the most part: yes. After the triumph of Kill the Moonlight, Spoon could have easily rested on their laurels and issued another album just like it, but Gimme Fiction proves they would rather evolve than stagnate. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Album Description
Spoon make some of the catchiest, most confident rock 'n' roll of any group around. Their fifth full-length is nothing short of a dizzying, soulful masterpiece, easily the most expansive work in their career. "Gimme Fiction" is a sprawling, exhilarating, filler-free album of keenly focused artistic vision and ambition.
Customer Reviews:
I play this repeatedly.......2007-07-19
I play it a lot not only because it has the great, thumping beats of "I turn my camera on," but also because of undeniably catchy songs like "Sister Jack," and the more sophisticated fare such as "The delicate place." Read the lyrics some time---they are far above the dreck and drivel that passes for vocal entertainment these days, for the most part.
Highly recommended.
Spoon is an amazing band........2007-07-06
I've had this album for a year, and it doesn't get old. The guitar hooks and the pop sound is incredibly addicting. Personally I like, "Girls Can Tell" better, but this doesn't fall to far from the tree. I can't wait to grab myself a copy of, "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga." I highly recommend this album!
OK.......2007-03-17
Not as good as I had hoped from the reviews. One good song and a bunch of OK ones.
My husband loved it.......2007-01-09
It was a gift..I have never heard it..then I got it for him, and he plays it everyday. Its a great CD.
Brillant.......2007-01-09
This has to be one of the best albums I own. Spoon goes beyone the bar in the album "Gimme Fiction." From the softer song "I Summon You" to the more upbeat tempo yet fresh lyrics for "I Turn my Camera on" this album is by far one of my favorite Spoon albums.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.
MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Best Damn Cover Band In The World pt 6..........2007-06-27
...Oh dear, poor old Wojo(name seems despairingly appropriate somehow)still doesn't get it(see review for "Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah"). But, I guess, like a boomerang, it may just come back and hit him in the heart. These guys really do like their country and it shows on this delectable offering of cow-punk-pie. Rip roaring country fare deliciously interpretated; the Dixie Chicks can kiss goodbye to Earl, quite literally, as the Gimmes have made it theirs.
The best of the West by the best damn cover band in the world.
Not too shabby.......2007-05-16
I've been into this band for a few years now, and I think this is one of their better CDs. I loved their rendition of "On the road again" where they fused the beginning of "Astro Zombies" by the Misfits into the song. All in all it's not a bad album.
Awful.......2007-02-25
If you like to hear classic, great songs turned into garbage then this your band. I just wish they would play their own songs instead of ruining perfectly good ones. I think everyone of their recordings should be loaded on a rocket and sent directly into the sun.
The Gimmes continue to rock... even when it's country.......2007-01-29
I am a huge admirer of MFATGG, but with each new release I keep expecting their schtick to wear thin. I thought they had probably reached their creative zenith with their live concept album recorded at a Bar Mitzvah. But this album proves there is still plenty of gas left in tank for this band. True, they do only covers, but their obvious admiration for a catchy tune is infectious. On this album I found "Goodbye Earl," "Ghostriders in the Sky", and "East Bound" to be standout tracks. I could have done without their version of "Stand By Your Man." I think the Blues Brothers own the trademark on the ironic cover of that tune.
Gimme some more.......2006-12-23
I love this band and the concept of covering the original "lame" versions of the songs that they select for their CDs. You couldn't pay me to sit down and listen to the same songs by the original artists, but the Gimme's versions always pay off. My favorite is "Have a Ball" and this CD is right up there too. Great music to listen to on the way to work in the morning.

A key ingredient in Skynyrd discography.......2007-03-03
This CD, and Nuthin' Fancy, show that good 'ol Shorty Medlocke influence with the diverse, but very southern music songwriting. Bullets is a must have if you are a Ronnie Van Zant fan first, the Skynyrd band second. This is "gone fishin" and sitting on the porch music at it's finest.
If you are a new Skynyrd fan,get One More From The Road,Pronounced and then Street Survivors. Also consider Gold and Platinum and the boxed set,if you want a major portion of the whole pie.
Enjoy .
Put 'Em Back Were They Belong.......2007-01-29
Give Me Back My Bullets is the only reason I purchased this CD for that song alone it is worth the price of the CD. The rest is fine, but not my favorite from Skynyrd.
Underrated Skynyrd.......2006-10-07
Of the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd albums, this one is the most underrated, and that is unfortunate. This album stands up there beside the classics "Pronounced" and "Second Helping" as one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's finest.
Highlights here include both studio and live versions of the excellent title track, and studio and live versions of the hidden gem "Cry For The Bad Man." The latter song is one of Skynyrd's finest tracks, but unfortunately is not included on most of the compilations in any form. Then there's the rocker "Double Trouble," the beautiful "All I Can Do Is Write About It," and the studio version of the concert staple "Searching."
If you don't already own "Pronounced" and "Second Helping," by all means go over right now and buy both, but be sure to pick this one up while you're at it. If you do own both of those, "Gimme Back My Bullets" won't disappoint. And if you're one of those unfortunate people who only know the "new" Lynyrd Skynyrd, be forewarned that those CDs are likely to begin collecting dust as soon as you hear your first few bars of Skynyrd with the late Ronnie Van Zant.
Rest In Peace Ronnie. We miss you, brother. One listen to this album, or any other Lynyrd Skynyrd album up to and including "Street Survivors," will show the listener why he's so sorely missed.
don't you dare cry for the bad man.......2006-03-23
This album has a country sound to a lot of their songs which I really enjoyed. Some of the more rockin' songs are Gimme back my bullets and double trouble. I got the same old blues is a slower song with a nice groove to it and a harmonica solo. Some of the songs have female vocals, like on double trouble, which are enjoyable. If you want to hear a more country sound from lynyrd skynyrd then you should defenitly check out this cd.
back in the saddle?.......2006-02-13
this review of "gimme back my bullets" comes from a observer of the music skynyrd produced not as a obbessed fan whom buys everyhing i've got "one more from the road" one of the best double cd albums ever made..yet i've only ever ventured into the greatest hits packaged that are shoved down my thoat at every corner it seems every few months a new greatest hits album is released..so really i bought a double disc and was overly happy
i thought to myself i'd see what their proper albums were like
and this album to my opipion is abit too country for me not sayin' it's bad..just either he needed to be more acoustic rock with less of the country tinge[i hate country]
or balls out hard rock that i know skynyrd could do..
it's a shame really because there's a great album in there
it's just swamped..but over accesses and not too many highs
sorry

Best Damn Cover Band In The World pt 1..........2007-06-27
...Me First has created a musical legacy far greater than the sum of the groups these guys fulltime in. I'm not a fan of cover versions(rare is the artist or band who can make a well known song more superior to the original that they make it their own) but, this band blows a fresh breeze through these tunes. Fun, fast, and,as someone mentioned earlier, clean. No melancholy here, just up-lifting, dynamic interpretations of classic songs; made even more classic("Me & Julio..." is awesome).
Quite simply the best damn cover band in the world!
The Gimmes Rock.......2007-01-23
My family fell in love with their upbeat remakes of the oldies last summer. This CD is a great addition to our fun songs collections.
Great Stuff for the whole family.......2006-05-27
I love how Me First and the Gimme Gimmes put a punk rock twist on some good classic tunes. Whats more surprsing is that my mom and my step dad love them too. Scary huh? These guys are great, they make songs rock and more fun than they were before.
Me First and The Gimme Gimmes.......2006-03-20
Punk reworking of standard rock classics and show tunes is OUTANDING. The vocals and guitar work are great as is the sense of humor the boys put into the album Good stuff! Great for parties.
Fun idea - Hilarious Song Selection.......2006-02-01
These guys surely did "Have A Ball" putting this recording together. The idea's a great one, and the song selection is so twisted that it either had to turn out GREAT or fail terribly. Luckily it is the former, and being a musician myself I would have loved to have been in the studio for these sessions. I'm sure it was a party start to finish! The only reason it didn't get a 4-star rating from me is the fact, that for me, it isn't something that would stay in the CD player for long periods of time. But it is a great idea carried out very well by what sounds like a bunch of fun lovin' guys!

Best Damn Cover Band In The World pt 2..........2007-06-27
...Oh dear, Libertine Venus(pretentious reviewer below)just doesn't get it. Stuck in the doldrums?(as LV obviously is)then throw out your Glade air freshener/inscense, and slap on a slice of Me First. It's fun, frivolous, fresh and flavorsome. Nothing heavy hearted here just a good clean revamp of some classical music("Stepping Out" is so repeatable that you may just burn a hole in this disc).
Without an equal, the best damn cover band in the world.
Are a Drag? Absolutely it is!.......2007-02-05
These fools are completely annoying. I cannot imagine the brand of morons who have rated this album 5 stars. HA! You call yourselves fans of punk. Disgusting. Me First is just a collaboration of guys who once did some good work and have WAY too much time on their hands. I mean seriously... Don't Cry for Me Argentina? Over the Rainbow??? Phantom of the Opera?? laughs... whatever. I can see hearing, say, Rainbow Connection once and thinking it was cool. If you can listen to that type of garbage over and over again, you must be freaking brain dead, living in your mommy's basement, or both! Still, to own and listen to it over and over? Luckily (or unluckily) for me, I heard the entire album on yahoo music. I hope the lot of you locate some taste... find your Sex Pistols, Ramones, and other classic punk cds... and move out of mommy's basement.
The Concept Coalesces.......2006-10-18
I own every Me First and the Gimme Gimmes record that's available on a format that I can currently deal with (SOMEbody forgot to tell me when they released their extremely limited vinyl boxed set, but it's just as well, as I don't currently have a working turntable). I suppose that marks me as a fan. So be it.
This is where the band started to get really good. Don't get me wrong--their first CD (Have a Ball) isn't without its charms, but for all it is, it's mostly a garden variety punk record that happens to be full of cover songs. I'm not sure how much punk rock you, the reader, have listened to, but most of it is pretty bad. It's a genre that is built on the assumption that its performers will have little technical proficiency (that's the whole reason why they drop riffs in favor of power chords, though if any of that makes any sense to you there's at least a twenty five percent chance that you consider anything in 4/4 time to be a lesser form of communication).
Before Are a Drag, the band had been attempting to shoehorn older songs into the punk rock form. With this album, the group realized that they need to meet the music halfway, and the results have been spectacular. There isn't a bad song on this record, which is saying a lot for a release in the punk family. The vocals are well executed, the composition is tight, and the subject manner manages to be irreverent and campy without becoming a novelty (less Weird Al Yankovic, more Zappa, if that makes any sense).
So, who's NOT going to like this CD? People who think they're getting garden variety showtunes are going to be disappointed. People who take showtunes too seriously are going to be angry. People who don't like punk rock will probably not enjoy the experience, though that's not an absolute (this is pretty far removed from the majority of punk). People who think that [insert band--usually Tool or Radiohead, but there are other contenders] are the beginning and end of music won't find anything here to change their minds.
So there's those thirty seven people. For the rest of the listening world, this is a great album. Don't get me wrong--it's not an INFLUENTIAL album. This isn't Sgt. Pepper's or IV. It's just well conceived, well executed fun, and should be received as such. A good and welcome addition to almost any collection (though parents may want to listen first, as they may or may not approve of the contents).
simply amazing.......2006-04-08
this has to be my favorite album they have done. it is just fantastic. the last time i saw them, about 4.5 years ago in san francisco at stinkys peep show, spike jumped out in the crowd when they were playing dont cry for me argentina and i jumped on top of everyone and i sang the last bit of the song with him. they are an awesome band to see live! if i were to buy any of their cds, it would be this one for sure!
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Are a Drag.......2006-03-20
Great Punk Record! This is a punk rock reworking of standard rock classics and show tunes is OUTANDING. The vocals and guitar work are great as is the sense of humor the boys put into the album Good stuff! Great for parties.

Whether or not Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were successful in their attempt to Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah depends, naturally, on Jonny. If he's a fan of pop (and circumstance) classics reconfigured as punk, Jonny's special day must have been quite a treat because that's what he got. The Gimmes brought their tongue-in-cheek sneering delivery and souped-up versions on hits such as "Take it on the Run" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." Me First even tackles "Stairway to Heaven" here. And, as you might guess, "Hava Nagila" closes the set. This CD is a low-brow party favor, perfect for 13-year-old boys actually. Others may be worn a little thin depending on how hilarious they find a rocked-up "Delta Dawn." Still, the band barrels through this party of friends and relatives with plenty of charm. Listeners will visualize the Bar Mitzvah dance floor while they place bets on whether or not Richard Cheese gets billed at Jonny's prom. --John Moe

Best Damn Cover Band In The World pt 5..........2007-06-27
...Oh dear, poor old Wojo below just doesn't get it boys and girls. These guys prove that practice does make a perfectly good live album. Tongue-in-cheek on so many levels with deadly serious musician-ship - a lethal compination that shows that Me First are not just studio brats.
Shalom from the best damn cover band in the world!
Don't waste your time.......2007-02-26
Taking great songs and ruining them with screaming and every song sounds the same. There are about a million other things better to do with your money and time.
Gutsy.......2007-02-04
Man, these guys got guts to blatantly put out a CD & video based on a bad bar mitzvah. I've been a Gimmes fan for about 5 years and this one is for fans really. If you are starting off on Gimmes you are better off listening to the earlier stuff like "Have A Ball", "Are A Drag", etc.
Real entertainers.......2006-07-29
I got this after I heard 'Are A Drag' and figured that it couldn't be for real. Well, I'm sure that it is. These guys are great. I turned a lot of people onto them that wouldn't even get into punk but know these songs and enjoy what they do with them. The quality of the recording is pretty amazing. It might be lame to say, but it's probably one of the best live recordings that I've come across. Their remakes of tunes are just great and you can tell that they are pretty serious about their love for the music that they do. I didn't cringe like one reviewer did at Stairway to Heaven, it was as short as it needed to be without being blasphemous. The singing is really great on this and the things that they say between the songs are quite humorous. One wish? They recorded their break (which was kind of odd but not unlike them probably) so that it ate up time on the disc. I would've like more songs, they were just sounding great!! If you like music because it entertains you, this is for you. I am a pro musician and usually analyze music. I don't to this; it's meant to be for enjoying and nothing else.
???.......2005-11-17
I know they cover a lot of songs and all that, but am i the only one who thinks they should be shot for their rendetion of stairway to heaven?

redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

In an era of math-rock calculations and emotionally scarred alt-metal, the rock & roll party feels a little dry on humor. Thank god for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, a punk supergroup whose only purpose in plugging into an amp is to have a good time playing covers of songs from the days before concert venues had metal detectors.
On their third full-length, Blow in the Wind, Me First continue with a lineup that's like the top pick of the underground scene: vocalist "Spike" (Swinging Utters), bassist Fat Mike (NOFX), guitarist "Jackson" (a.k.a. Chris Shifflet of the Foo Fighters), along with drummer Dave Raun and guitarist Joey Cape (both of Lagwagon). The goofy, talented musicians travel back four decades this time, picking up 13 classic songs of the '60s and racing through them at lightening speed (the whole disc clocks in at a little over 27 minutes). From the raucous "Who Put the Bomp" and "Sloop John B." to the heartsick "I Only Want to Be With You," Me First put the pop back in pop punk as they bounce their way through the years. The two standouts on the disc, though, are "My Boyfriend's Back" (on which the tough rockers show their sensitive side) and "Stand by Your Man" (whose words Me First twist around to implore listeners to "stand by your band"). With their high-spirited attitude toward music and their healthy dose of humor, Me First prove once again that there still is a party raging in the world of rock & roll. --Jennifer Maerz

This time around the band pay tribute to the tunes of the late '50's and '60's.Once again Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have woven their punk rock magic into the threads of the classics from the likes of the Beach Boys, The Beatles, Del Shannon and Cat Stevens, just to name a few. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

Best Damn Cover Band In The World pt 3..........2007-06-27
...Me First will blow you away with these amazingly vibrant interpretations of 50's & 60's songs. Simply wonderful, but, by no means simple in execution; Me First just make it seem simple - these guys are speedsters and technocrats of the highest order(all standouts on this disc).
No other band measures up to the title of "the best damn cover band in the world".
Fantastic.......2007-02-04
If you like punk & you like cover bands, then this album is perfect for you. I can sit around & listen to this CD for days. Awesome.
Good fun, but too easy........2007-01-26
I love this album a lot, but when you think about it, its too easy to make a punk album of 60's songs, because punk music (especially early punk) was highly influenced by the pre-Beatles era of pop music. In fact, punk covers of 60's pop songs have been around just as long as punk has (the Ramones did a total of *four* 60's pop covers on their first three albums).
Its a very enjoyable and fun album, but its just too easy to make a very enjoyable fun ablum like this.
Still, the humor sets its a part from the rest, and I like how they tipped their hats to the Ramones (intro of "Teenage Lobotomy" on "Sloop John B"), the Clash (intro to "London Calling" on "Elenor"), and the Sex Pistols (ending of "EMI" on the end of "Runaway") on their songs.
Its a really fun album by a great band, but the 60's covers concept is too easy for me to give it 5 stars.
Great music if you like it.......2006-11-03
While visiting with our son in Michigan this last summer, we listened to this cd & had to have it!! Love it!!
pretty good and even hilarious.......2006-03-06
there are some great songs on here. the 50's and 60's seemed like a good time for music. the tracks "stand by your man" and "my boyfriends back" are hilarious because guys sing them. id say add it to your collection. its really good.
