3 out of 5 stars Bumcello.......2005-04-07

I have only heard one single, "Beautiful You" but judging the album by just that one song would not be fair. So with all sincerity, I would have to say that this song is an ecelectic mix of rap, groove and the soft churn of cellos and violins. Very beautiful, no pun intended. I look forward to hearing more of this. If you like music out of the ordinary, you will like this what you hear on "beautiful you."

Not sure where the name 'Bumcello' comes from, but one of them does play the instrument (cello, that is) which is just one of the diverse elements that make this album so unique (and an award winner in France). Take for example 'Sierra Mountain Top': it starts with footsteps up to a microphone in what sounds like an empty hall, followed by a smooth bass line leading into vocals in German, then English, then French, overlaid with percussive effects (fingersnaps?) and languid cello tones. Sounds awful in print, but totally infectious musically. 'Dalila' is full of uptempo African stylings; 'Xing' is rocking guitar work with a chorus of kids (you'll understand when you hear it); 'Sweat,Sweat,Sweat' is pure seduction; and 'Monolife' wraps things up with some abrasive electronic touches. Eclectic lyrics, off-beat elements, some excellent melodies, off-the-cuff delivery - it's a wonder that the music possesses such immediate appeal. A touch of genius must be in the mix. By the way, they may be from France, but most of it's sung in English. Great album!

Bum Cello has the most fantastically idiosyncratic sound I've heard in years. It has elements of many electronica and jazz styles, but manages a beautiful synthesis rather than sounding clumsy and ill-conceived. A real find.
