4 out of 5 stars Prototype 1 is the original and still the best!.......2004-11-15

Seb sure got it right with this one! The track selection is excellent, the bass is driving and the riffs are funky. This is one my favorite Seb Fontaine disc of all time (and I own nearly all of them). If you are new to the hard and progressive sound of Seb, pick this one up first!

5 out of 5 stars An imporvement and refecltion of his current sets.......2000-05-03

I usually buy ALL Global undreground releases, and since Seb is now a part of the label I bought the previous Prototype cds too. I was not amazed by the sound of the earlier releases but this new double cd is way ahead of them! Seb's sound is not, IMO, the most cutting edge of all DJ's, but Seb chose amazing and energetic tracks that make you want to fly. I caught his recent set at Mexico's Rimel and I can assure you that this disc is TRULY a reflection of what he plays. Disc one is slower but not housier, it's the sort of music that starts to be heard at 1AM, when the decks begin to heat. Disc two is the all time rush, with most of the tracks sending you into overdrive! I do remember him playing 3 or 4 songs from disc two and this makes it truly special. Check out tracks from Moby, Paragliders, Marmion, Amethyst and the classic "orange theme" from Cygnus X. A DEFINITE BUY!

From the moment trancy London house mate Seb Fontaine slaps down Cevin Fisher's "Music Saved My Life," it is clear that this latest quality release from the Global Underground series is going to be a well-designed journey. Wasting no time with ambient soundscaping, Prototype 2 showcases a DJ who manages to blend trance, funk, and the general feel of techno into one belter of a Friday-night double. It has a subtle blend of smooth edges and thunderous power, with the effortless glide of Stone Factory's "Sunset" or the undulating glide of Soultrance's eponymous effort all warm and fuzzy alongside the intensity of pounding techno-trance such as Durango-95's muscle stretching "Drum Decay." Liquid Art's expansive, house-trance-textured "Liquid Groove" is the true departure point into uninhibited abandon. DJ Jan's "X Santo" is all about sliding past speed limits (which Paul Van Dyk's "Avenue" keeps up nicely) before Fontaine brings the sunrise with a mix of Atlantis's "Fiji." Prototype 2 demonstrates that it is one thing having records, and quite another knowing how to use them; Seb Fontaine has both. --Steffan Chirazi

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars CD2 is awesome, CD1 ummm.......2001-01-12

Well lets see CD2 is great. Peak time sound is the best way to describe it. Basically this means this is the kind of music you want to listen to as your just about to enter a club on a Saturday night. Sebs Hooligans mix of Open your eyes is awesome because it doesnt have the stupid refrain open your eyes and see the child you are in it. Song 2 MIro OHHH MY GOD: simple so simple but so good. 3 and 4 are average...but then you reach 5 and then the rest is gold from there EXCEPT FOR AVENUE....GOD I HATE THIS SONG! Pvd is awesome but please this song TOTALLY doesnt fit in here. I dont like CD1 but I mean IM really not into that whole style of music way too loud and noisy for my liking, but some may like it. Anyways CD2 is almost perfect and makes this a good buy if you can tolerate tech house or whatever the music on cd1 is called.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing seb's music.......2000-12-28

The first time i listen to Seb Fontaine was when i bought the prototype 2, by that time i was amazed by the global underground series but until that moment i didn't knew the real power and emotion that makes me feel prototype 2.A mix of a kind of tech-house, deep house and pure house in CD1 followed by energetic progressive house marks a way thay any dj had done before.Tracks like the one of Warriors of love, Chris Cargo, johan and the classic one of Cevin Fisher's "Music save my life" certify that he's leading the way.

2 out of 5 stars Trance for children?.......2000-08-22

Yet another mix including Cevin Fisher's Music Saved My Life. Yes, I know I didn't have to buy it to find that out.

Disc one is in general hard, large swathes of it are percussion with very little layered on top. Its too stark for my liking, until track 9, Crash by Johan. Then suddenly Track 10 is the climax, overshadowing the remainder which I can only describe as "back to the bare percussive stuff again".

Disc 2 -
At first I was determined to describe disc two as children's trance, because the rhythms and melodies are mostly so trite as to be almost childish and the transitions often obvious. But after a few listens I began to tune in and realise that this makes it utterly relentless and quite compelling,. But it only works for me as background or a preparation for something more illustrious. But I swear a dedicated hearing will have you falling asleep until the Climatix track - Bing, you awake soaring above a sweeping, bubblegum lush landscape - a sweet but overlong pretender, then the first "reaching into my brain" drops perfectly into yours, and bingabingabonga you're off to the land of nod again. The bubblegum makes a more subdued appearance later under the name of Never Tell but barely pierces the consciousness and the rest is pretty stodgy stuff. The penultimate track Learning To Fly makes me want to throttle something. The last track, Fiji, has me reaching for the sick bucket, Yeuch. This Seb geezer is a thug, and he's asaulting my sensibilities.

Ultimately not satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars Breakbeat/trance Techno 9 on a 10 scale.......2000-07-11

Standout Cuts include Cevin Fisher's "Music Saved My Life", Terry Mulan + Halo's "Nickel Bag of Funk", Durnango-95's "Drum Decay", and Stefano Libelle + HH's "Liquid Groove".

Very danceable, high energy breakbeat grooves here.

3 out of 5 stars Listen before you buy........2000-07-10

I'm not really good at reviewing DJ Set's because well.....im not even old enough to get in a club (lol) So, I dont really *REALLY* know the effect this music can have on you live. I do know a good track from a bad one though, so for those of you who wont hear this live I can convey to you my thoughts on Idle Listening.

Disc One, like previously reviewers have said is a very house progressive music.. Not much trance here! But thats not what everyone in the world likes in a DJ Set so lets listen to this house progressive music... All in all I find most of it to be moving.. Once you make it up to track 10 "somebody scream" you get a more addictive sound....I like this track because its kewl when its loud. Its my favorite on the first disc. It feels trancy when you listen deeply... Following that trancy track is "iguana" (where do they come up with these names?) this music doesn't make me think of Iguanas....I guess its kind of like deep jungle music? Well, whatever. This track is kind of kewl...a mover w/out a doubt... As you can tell im very bored with the first disc, track ten is worth noting however, so sample that one k?

Disc two is by far the better! Starting with Nalin & Kane "Open your eyes" Well, I can say you better start listening because this DJ Set suddenly started kicking! Disc Two is full of Trance which is by far the coolest live music in the world! The first track is constantly building with no chances of respite! Following that "By your side" Very very noteworthy. This is the kind of track you want to get caught speeding for! After your done cruising with Miro you slip gently into (seamless mixing I might add!) Liquid Groove, I dont find this track to be very uhh....smooth...I dont think of a "Liquid Groove" I mean, its pretty good but its not a highlight of the Set so "try" NOT to skip this one the second time around. Next is "slapbang" keeping me movin, albeit "almost" forcefully with this track. Its a welcome addition to the set, but its mostly just the stuff right between the cake and the icing. Climatix's Freejack starts out kind of squelchy but if you give it time it progresses into a much more attractive sound. (listen for that drum roll) X Santo, (this is a trance track that I personally LOVE) The vocals in this one are mind tripping you definitely have to hear this one loud! A Definitely *highlight of the dj set* This is the kind of track that makes me wish I were old enough to hear music like this live! After Dj Jan has finished reaching into your brain, a more traditional Trance artist comes to the fore with a track that is practically praised by EVERYONE. I find PvD to make music that sounds essentially the same, mostly referring to him as traditional trance I do, Avenue is a kewl track... I mean comon PvD never puts out a bad track does he? However, I like the previous track X Santo much more then Avenue. Like I said PvD is traditional and he tends to keep his trance a little too familiar at times. The next two tracks I will refer to as "fillers" they just wedge between two awesome tracks. Basically they are there to add time to the DJ set yes? haha. Anyways, after you have forced your way through them you get a chance to soar with "resound" this track is kind of a pleasure track that gets you filling kind of light-hearted, following it is more lessons in flying with Mothers Pride. This track IS the *Best of the DJ SET* All you have to do is turn this up and you will get that all too familiar vibe all over your body. I mean it. If you dont buy this Set, hear this track at the least! God, I wish I could hear this live! Anyways, onto the last track of Seb Fontaine's fine set. Its definitely an excuse to rest from the dancefloor, while not being such a bad track... it doesnt have the sheer power of the previous one and its like your building up all this excitement for the next track, but then you realize theres no way it can live up to the hype. Goodnight folks, this is definitely the track that gives you an excuse to take a break.

My conclusion is this, since im rating both Cd's I have to do an overall analysis, the second cd I will say now deserves at least a 4.5 rating. The first track is what pulls me down to an even 3. However, since you have to purchase both CD's to get the second disc I can say now....hey buy it. Cuz the second disc makes it worth it! Sample those tracks I praised and you WILL buy it! Peace all....

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-11-29

A classic piece of progessive house set. Fast, deep, with a lot of crescendos...sometimes happy, sometimes darker.... Really great !

3 out of 5 stars Average, but better than prototype 2.......2004-10-02

Cd 1 starts off with more of a housy clubby feel, but not john digweed good house. It doesn't really go any where special in disc 1 and honestly it's really pretty dated.

Disc 2 having more of my likings because of about 3 or 4 songs "shimmer" "juggernaut" "lithium" and my fav. " the oarnge theme" but this cd is still very dated anthemistic trance and it's not as good as any of the other global underground dj's. But i still can get into the groove into it. Sometimes when i listen to it i could give it a good 5 star rating but overall it really is a 3. I don't really suggest you buy this album and deffinataly don't buy prototype 2 because its extremely dated. I feel like seb fontaine is putting on a facade and not really being himself in any of the prototypes. You really get a feel with other global underground dj's of what they are about and what type of techno they bring to the table. With Seb i can't really determine what he's trying to get at. This feels to be like a beginner album and not a true cd. If cd's are true in thier dj's background and roots than it will always hold up in time. But not so much with this album. Buy it if you want , but i really advise you to steer clear and go for a better global underground dj like Nick warren, John Digweed, and maybe some of Oakenfold's earlier stuff like new york and oslo.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-01-11

The besy of the 4 prototypes by Seb. Strong beat, fast moving uplifting grroves

      5 out of 5 stars Storm front.......2002-05-13

Seb Fonatine has consistently delivered to his fans. Seb, in my opinion, is up in the ranks of Oakenfold and Tenaglia and with this 3rd installment of the G.U. Prototype series, he keeps true to my words. I don't know if I would call this a trance set, a progressive house/trance set, etc. because it doesn't matter. This is simply good music that is pieced together in a way that only true Spinsters can do. I don't have a favorite track, or any 'he should of done this...blah blah' because it is not necessary. If you read the sleeve notes from each cd of Prototype, you will understand. Seb is honest and straight forward and his music is proof. This is the harder side of G.U. The is where the monsters of real dance music live. This is where you will find your solace, your home, and your haven of pure, unedited, X-rated techno. This is Seb Fontaine. This is music.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a prototype that can be only better............2001-09-28

Sine Seb Fontaine is quite popular in my Country (Hungary) I decided to give his third issue a try. Frankly, I positively disappointed. Before I listened to his sets I thought in myself this would be a hard house/techno mix. The first CD despite of a good start (some of trancey and housey tracks) turns hard by the middle and sounds like techno, bringing serious basslines throughout the CD. Fortunately thechno mood soon passes over (while deep bass remains) and Seb takes the final 3-4 tracks smoothly over to the second CD.
CD 2 represents another style (totally another some part) that is similar in style of John'00'Fleming's "For your ears only" or Nick Warren's Brazil. All in all second CD is a very very good trance/dance mix in itself that will move ya all the night, spicing up with some unexpected and thrilling turnarounds. Most underground fans will probably love this.

        4 out of 5 stars A Beat For Everyone.......2003-03-25

The beauty of this two disc CD is that it gives Seb a chance to allow the listener to explore a diverse sound of beats. I prefer Disc 2 over 1, but that's b/c I love the trance he brings into it. I've owned this CD for 4 years now, and I'm STILL playing it at least twice a month (CD 2)...and I had to go back to the store to find his other Prototypes...which at times I'm just as pleased, and sometimes not so pleased. Either way, his style never fails to make my body move to the beat!

3 out of 5 stars This is a mixed bag.......2001-03-01

For a 49-year-old, I listen to a lot of trance - in fact, sometimes I thrive on it. Seeing the other reviews here, I pounced on ordering this CD. When it arrived, I quickly put on the first CD, and waited for it to "warm up to me" or pick up. I waited & waited... then I realized I was nodding off to insistent (and quite boring) repetitive rhythms. Great if you're an insomniac. CD 2 is quite a bit better, but still uneven. I prefer dynamic and varied paces, melodies you can get behind, and music that gets me going. Only certain cuts on this CD do that for me, so I was somewhat disappointed.

Now 2002: I've revisited this CD, and I must confess I'm liking it more - it may grow on you.

        Seb Fontaine Prototype 01

Think of the DJ Seb Fontaine, as dance music savoir for the new millennium; but for those of you unlucky ones out there, let me give you the low down on him. Seb started out dj'ing at a young age and when on to play at soul and reggae clubs; there he used to get paid 39 pounds (about $25 dollar here) a night; spinning the same old records, night after night. Until a friend of his talked him in to going to a house club one night, and the rest is history. Seb told one magazine: "I was totally blown away". That is where he found his "niche". In a matter of months, Seb went from playing the same old crappy routines and the same old records, to testing out different tunes, missed placed mix's, studying the dance floor, and picking up his "sixth sense" for what the crowd liked and wanted to hear.... before they knew they wanted to hear it! Seb started out his new dance themed set with a number of residencies from clubs such as Wag and Fridge in London, and last year went he got a weekly night at cream in Spain. His set at Cream is where he started attracting people from around the world, people from Germany, china, and even the USA. Everyone wanted to see him perform dance floor destroying sets. Seb's reputation was growing and just rep, so will his CD's. For all you house music lovers out there, disc 1 is for you. Seb slices and dices his way into the funky-seedy style of house music, that currently the crazy of there in London. From the opening track "My Fellow Boppers", you can tell just where Seb is going take you. The music builds and grows into a furnace of hard deep house with core tracks like "Basketball Heroes" "Zipper" and "He chilled out 99". Seb is making a fiery of deep house that never lets you down. Disc 2 (my favorite.) is more like a peak time Saturday night, but with a more trance theme to it. This set blends, shiver, and melts into more commercial tracks such as ATB's "9pm(till I come), "Life Isn't Easy", and "Mission". Plus some more "E"urphoric ones that can be found in gems like "Universal Nation" and " Because of Dreams". In the end, Prototype is a small sample of what we should prepare for what to come from Seb Fontaine, because once you hear this CD, you'll be some immersed, so deep into the music...you'll realize that the CD has stop, but you was still jamming.

5 out of 5 stars seb brings dance to a new level.......2000-09-23

once again the brilliance of the great man is voiced here, as an understudy to de vit he brings here a great blend of music styles and contrasts to capture the dance scene in europe.starting off with a fast pitch in the first three techno tracks he brings the mix to a slower speed to allows the lister to enjoy all the great tracks on this album. then for the last four tracks the pace is increased with the twisty yet catchy "mike" leaving the audience breatless. as for the second cd, the pace never drops it just continues to pound the ears with massive tracks like "til i come". the mix is flawless and finishes up with the extended mix of the uplifting track "sanctuary" a truly excellent album , a must for people who want to experience what live dance music is like in europe. the best album that i have bought all year fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Sebastian Fontaine-- Great and still improving.......2000-08-21

PROTOTYPE 3 is really 2 dance sets: a medium paced trance set, and a high energy cutting edge collection of breakebeat, tance, techno & other related genres.

Of the 2 sets, the high energy one seems to work better and showcases Fontaine's skills as a DJ better than the first one does. However, the first set is not to be disparaged. The problem with an all trance set is that there just isn't as much good Trance out there that segues well with other Trance sounds. With most Trance, you usually end up with either a compilation that sounds 'all the same", or something that sounds like a hodgepdge of audio experiments, rather than a great 'groove'.

Seb Fontaine is better than most, and the trance set mostly works, but it never really kicks into high gear (of course many Trance fans prefer those more dreamy, spacey sound textures).

While PROTOTYPE-2 was great, this is an improvement: on par with John Digweed's 'BedRock' and Paul Oakenfold's 'Tranceport' work. Fontaine sems to be developing his own 'style' and 'sound'. Hard breaks and thumping beats (120 +bpm) with a mix of Latin & Funk anchoring & driving the mix, and all with that gleaming high-tech sheen that only electronic music can deliver, are what Fontaine mixes best. I can hardly wait for PROTOTYPE-4!

WARNING: If you place the 2nd CD in your player, you may never get it out -- due to repeat listens.

2 out of 5 stars Hardcore Trance At Its Worst.......2007-05-28

To each his or her own when it comes down to music...but man, I can't understand how this album can be satisfying to anyone. Granted electronica comes in all shapes and sizes, and there is usually a genre to suit everyone...so I guess this is just one of those albums pack full of tracks that I don't like and others do.

To be the devil's advocate though...this album lacks any artistic flare. No rhythm, very little tempo flux, and a complete abscence of harmonics and melody. Those of you who prefer the musical journey versus a bunch of high energy, high tempo tracks that are strung loosely together should stay clear of this one.

        Disc 1 gets 1.5/5 stars. Disc 2 gets 2/5.

2 out of 5 stars Man this one just plain stinks!.......2002-12-21

You know, to this day, the best Prototype out of the series are one and three. This one just happens to be the worse. The tracks selection is horrible and just when you think it will start thumping, it all of a sudden slows down once again making you irritated to the max. Some of the tracks are just plain annoying. No good skip on this one and save some money for better comps.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive, deep, hard, boring.......2002-05-27

I bought this CD based on how cool the samples sound when played for only 20 seconds. I was extremely disappointed to find that little changes in any track from those 20 second sound-bytes, and the best way I can sum up my experience was "YAWN!" I kept waiting for a track to build, to bring in some new rhythms, sounds, melodies, ANYTHING but the constant boom-boom-boom.

Having said all that, I gave my copy of this CD to a friend and she LOVES it! No big surprise, there are a ton of 5-star reviews of Prototype 4 to accompany this 2-star bashing; music is a purely subjective experience. Who would like this CD and other Fontaine releases: those who enjoy straight-forward BEATS, lots of bass-heavy thumping, not much melody, nothing too complex, nothing high pitched, and no emotional expression. On the other hand, if you want a more mentally and emotionally engaging type of sound that changes and evolves and uses synchopation and interwoven streams of sound, do NOT get this CD or you'll be as annoyed by it as I was! For progressive/deep trance that melts in your mind and heart, not in your stomach (an admittedly lame reference to heavy bass lines :~p), try Dave Seaman's Buenos Aires, Deep Dish's Moscow, or Max Graham's Transport. No cheese but a lot more interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Way too progressive.......2002-02-21

First off, I am a trance DJ, and know my trance well. I liked the funky trance of Prototype 1, but when I heard this, I wanted my money back. This CD is maad progressive and chill. Nothing to make you want to move, unless you really like way progged trance.

By the way, I just saw seb fontaine live, and he [was] so bad that I had to leave the room. And I even LIKE trance. How bout that?

5 out of 5 stars Hyper Progressive House, Dark, Hard and Crazy...........2001-11-06

When I thin of Seb Fontaine I think, go crazy, becasue his sets drives you crazy (In a great way (Trust Me)), I can't listen to this cd and drive because I would start Driving 120 mph and start thinking I am SUperman and I don't want to do that.
Seb to me has his own style that is why at Global Underground he has a class of his own called Prototype....
This cd Prototype 4 makes me go wild, from the beggening of the cd he rocks the set and ends leaving you gasping.... Great Complation, best Prototype to date, best complation from Seb To date, and I can't wait for the next one to come out so I can get pumped up agin.....
